@OctavianDamiean yeah, but what does "moves it to the chat" mean
will the involved users be logged into the chat?

it actually moves that text to chat :D
no they have to join themself
oh and at the right hand side of this chat I also got an extra message below "there are other rooms" when it happend for me >:D

Q: Why should Python PEP-8 specify a maximum line length of 79 characters?

pcorcoranWhy in this millenium should Python PEP-8 specify a maximum line length of 79 characters? Pretty much every code editor under the sun can handle longer lines. What to do with wrapping should be the choice of the content consumer, not the responsibility of the content creator. Are there any (le...

Thanks @OctavianDamiean
I think the main reason that it's 79 and not 80 is to have multiple files next to each other, if the max line would 80, then files would appear glued to each other. The 80th column would be a separator between the files.

@htorque I can clear the vote - but it'll drop off eventually

yeah, after two days or so

1:07 PM
@MarcoCeppi do you think i should ask such a question?

reacting to an event like "mass storage connected" can be different on different linux distros, so i'd say it's ok

@Amithkk It's on topic - people will probably try to say "Put on SO", etc - but from what I understand it's a suitable question for the site

Anybody know if there's something that can emulate an iPad browser for me?

@Oli your best bet might be to run a browser with a modified UAS

Oli
The website isn't doing anything special with the useragent (it's not even reading it) I'm just wondering how it'll look at the iPad's resolution/dpi/font-settings

well.... get an ipad emu i.e if its there

@Oli would Firefox Mobile (Fennec) work for you?

Fennec uses a different font..I think
Atleast it does on my Windows Mobile 6.5

Oli
4:16 PM
@RolandTaylor Doesn't iOS default to a Safari browser?

@Oli the iPad runs Safari, that's the closest rendering engine you can get. check stackoverflow.com, superuser.com or apple.stackexchange.com

Yes,Yes it does
@Lekensteyn Kinda, But it uses compression

A: How to run a shell script when a new USB storage device is detected?

con-f-useIn /etc/udev/rules.d create a file that starts with two digits. The two digits specify which of the files in this directory are processed first by udev. Your file could look like this: KERNEL=="sd?1", ATTRS{serial}=="UA04FLGC", ACTION=="add", SYMLINK+="cusb1", RUN+="/home/confus/bin/usb-encrypt...

confuse might win some rep :)
Cool @MarcoCeppi I didnt know you could edit other persons chat .can you show me how chat looks like to a mod?

@Oli yes, but there is no "safari mobile" for desktops :D
@Amithkk no, he cannot ;)

I was about to say how weird it would be if we were all stick-people but that reminded me of a far entertaining conversation I had with my significant other a little while ago. She's clever (really clever and she's a doctor) but apparently when she reads something all the people in it are stick figures. I'd love to be able to hop into other people's heads sometimes.
Pretty special.

@DoR synaptic was overrated anyways! apt-get ftw

DoR
@Rinzwind I know, I almost never use synaptic.

Whoever misses Synaptic can use aptitude

Oli
@Amithkk Why do you keep suggesting aptitude-curses and not aptitude?

Don't force people to do things they don't want to. They won't thank you for it and they'll just go back to Windows.

I use synaptic because aptitude gtk needs work
I could use aptitude (from the cmd) but... it's a bit tricky
@JorgeCastro do you know if we will be forced to use the GNOME-Tweak-Tool in 11.10 final? (Or will we get an updated GNOME-Appearance-Properties?)

has few pre-supper minutes Hi

Oli
Why is wifi signal level in minus-dBm?
And why is the "link quality" out of 70?

dBm (sometimes dBmW) is an abbreviation for the power ratio in decibels (dB) of the measured power referenced to one milliwatt (mW). It is used in radio, microwave and fiber optic networks as a convenient measure of absolute power because of its capability to express both very large and very small values in a short form. Compare dBW, which is referenced to one watt (1000 mW). Since it is referenced to the watt, it is an absolute unit, used when measuring absolute power. By comparison, the decibel (dB) is a dimensionless unit, used for quantifying the ratio between two values, suc...

I only did a search on ubuntuforums :X

nice - must of us don't know...
My last silver badge came from Alaukik's edits - he didn't leave much of the original, not even my shot (:
It was not that bad the first time...

I have a rather funny memory. when I read something I like I -will- remember it for a long long time and 99 out of a 100 times I guess right when someone asks about something I once read
it's not like I know it for a fact but something inside goes ping when I see what is the correct answer :D

yeah that's a precious thing to have. I only remember I have read that before but never where I read it
useless then!

@Takkat it's unbelievable... wednesday morning i returned the package, today they moved it about 2km - that's all they did in two work days! :D

like the one about swap. I knew the answer cuz I once saw the sourcecode for it posted somewhere. No idea where it was but I even remembered the source codes comments had soooooooo many typos >:D

@htorque Snails can't do better - don't be harsh!

@Rinzwind just checked on their page: every other word is 'snel'

yeah
they renamed themself about 5 times in 25 years or so

"Hoe laat komt mijn pakket?"
It says...
don't they use digital watches?

hoe? i hope that's dutch, else i gotta flag it :D

hoe = how

why do they have a secondhand on their watch?

Oli
Well I'm waiting for one of these to be delivered. And by Jove, as soon as it get's here, I'm going to connect to every WiFi AP in a 300metre radius.

6:19 PM
wordly translated it would be "how late does my package arrive" so
"When does my package arrive"
@Oli wow

nice

@Rinzwind I didn't. Are they suggesting it be free? Or just that people should be able to roam (at extortionate cost)?

hold on Ill try and find an english source

I read it supposed to be a bit costly

Cracking WEP is just easier (and in most cases, faster) than signing up and signing in to a public hot spot.
5
That's the sad state of hotspot technology for you, I guess.
Not that I condone any such behaviour as a moderator. Be good, children.

there are enough non-encrypted ones around - no need for cracks

the number of wep "secured" aps has decreased imo

only after they told us that we are being made responsible if someone does evil things

at my parent's flat i get ~80 APs and only 4 of them use wep
four years ago it was like 15

Oli
@htorque Not round here. O2 is an ADSL ISP (as well as a mobile provider) and all their routers (I can see 10 from here using a crappy little USB stick) use WEP by default.

6:31 PM
that's ugly

here most WEP pre-installed routers died of age by now

exactly :D
the good thing about lead-free solder :D

some WiiFi periphery does not understand WPA :(

Oli
I think they probably do it because some old devices (eg Nintendo DS) don't support WPA and they don't want support calls from their customers.

i understand what it means to allow someone in your network, so i don't care how much it costs to replace unsecure hardware
but how many people care?

Oli
6:34 PM
About having an unsecure network? To be honest, I don't think a lot of people know that WEP only gets you about 10 seconds of protection.

on the other hand, you can always use an open ap plus vpn...
yeah, likely

Oli
There's still somebody stealing your bandwidth, even if they can't steal your data.

i'd send them to a page showing some honeypot output :D

Q: How do I clean up my dconf database?

htorqueDconf is pretty young, yet my database is already a mess with lots of "schema-less" keys. Is there a way to do some cleaning up, or would I need to start from scratch (by removing ~/.config/dconf/user I guess)?

Hey guys I need some help quick

Peter Falk died :-(

nautilus refuses to start with this error:
Eel:ERROR:eel-preferences.c:107:preferences_gconf_value_get_bool: assertion failed: (value->type == GCONF_VALUE_BOOL)
Aborted
who is Peter Falk?

Never heard of "Columbo"?
actor; won 4 emmy's :D
try this Roland: gksu "nautilus --no-desktop"

oh
I remember his name vaguely

did you run nautilus as root? >:D

trying now

it dies as root too

cool. you broke it \o

but I don't know how I broke it O.o
I haven't done anything but install a few updates/apps today
and change the quicklist for my home folder

source: https://bugs.launchpad.net/elementaryos/0.2/+bug/798039
The error is because some variables on gconf (i don't know why) are not Booleans, but strings.

I solved the problem with gconf-editor, changing some keys data type on apps/nautilus. They show the value "FALSE" or "TRUE". Create a new key with the same name but with boolean type, and you will be replacing the old keys.

I just did it, but can't remember what keys I have changed, but they are related with nautilus elementary (two of them are rgba_colormap on app/nautilus/preferences and volumes_visible on apps/nautilus/desktop)
.... so happy fishing around gconf >:D

6:58 PM
lol
would help if the error had the gconf setting in the message :-X
but that would be too easy I guess :D
