A: How can I make the background dark while watching video?

DoRYou can do this with the VLC media player: Install vlc Load your video. Uncheck Video ➜ Scale. This will keep the video the same size when viewed in fullscreen. Hit F11 to make VLC fullscreen. Hit Ctrl+H to hide the interface.

morning!

hi
i suggest cron ← cron-jobs and cron ← crontab - unfortunately i don't have enough rep in those tags...

8:52 AM
I agree on that :) it's basically the same.

hi everyone

@Greg Hey, nice to see you!

@FlackBot you robot?

@Greg I don't know what that command means.

@FlackBot never mind, you answered my question anyway :)

8:56 AM
@Greg I'm sorry, but I haven't the foggiest notion what you're trying to say.

@FlackBot ok no worries. Bye.

@Greg I'm not that smart - I haven't learned that command quite yet.

hey Greg.
Btw htorque... it is my time to wait for delivery thought mine is only 50 euro(a logitech harmony to ps3 connector)

@FlackBot hey stop trying to get the last word.

@Greg Hey, nice to see you.

8:56 AM
@FlackBot you idiot

@Greg I'm afraid I don't know how to answer that command yet.

@FlackBot man idiot

@Rinzwind nice, good luck - you'll need it :D :D

I know. Guess what they said when I completed payment....
delivery between 2 and 5 days :X
Ill starve to death if I can't go shopping for that long :D

i was thinking about ordering the monitor three times this time, keeping the best and returning the other two... but maybe that will get me on amazon's blacklist, so i'm not sure :D
i wonder how long it will take to get my money back for the one i returned

long :-X

ever disassembled a printer? it's amazing how tiny they can make springs nowadays :D

my boy disassembled two of them - amazing indeed. No way to reassemble!

hehe, of course i reassembled it! :D
you have this little part where the cartridge parks - it's made of five pieces held together by four springs... took my 10 seconds to disassemble and 20 minutes to put it back together :D
while at it i also cleaned the little pad they added to catch waste ink - it took another 20 minutes to clean that. now i know where all my ink went. :D

My boy took 5s - I had 2 hours to find out I never get that thingy back
timeouts... :(

however, i think it's a good question and given the traffic of SO those numbers don't look too surprising

@htorque I think it has more to do wih the fact that it was mentioned on reddit
@htorque mind to close that stupid question mentioned by @WorstQuestionsEver

anyone know what the difference is between running commands in the terminal and running them in Alt F2

stupid dutch countryman :S

Sometimes a command that works in the terminal does not work in ALt F2
like the following command
lxterminal && sleep 2s && transset-df -a
this will open a new terminal window and set it's transparency
but if I hit
Alt F2 and then type that in there
nothing happens

11:34 AM
try /bin/bash -c 'lxterminal && sleep 2s && transset-df -a'

That's odd. I never really use Alt-F2 though so I guess that's why I've never seen it

@htorque, ah. ok I will try that. I thought that it might be a bash thing
@htorque, awesome !!! thanks. that works except it doesn't work in a .desktop file
I tried "Exec=/bin/bash -c 'lxterminal && sleep 2s && transset-df -a'"
trying to get the .desktop file to open a terminal with transparency

PS Is there anyway to run the first Linux OS (the one with twm as the WM) on Vmware?
Like this :

12:54 PM
"That’s a side effect of how Linux handles files on disk. The files wont actually be deleted from disk while a process is still making use of them.

The same is true for upgrades. if you were to overwrite /usr/sbin/apache2 with an updated version, the system will continue to run the old /usr/sbin/apache2 until the process is stopped and restarted.

Which is one of the reasons system updates are less painful than the windows equivalent as we don’t have to reboot to replace files that are currently in use."

Oli
What is said for upgrades is true but not because of the way Linux handles files.

hmm, we're down to 3 featured questions, that's like a new low.

Oli
And the perceived benefit (reboot not required) is only half-true. You still need to reload the process from disk to get the update loaded. If it's a security issue, loading the updated version might be quite important.

Well i think rm rf should only be done on root

1:00 PM
@JorgeCastro given the fact that the new way to build unity under natty probably only lasts for a week, i didn't update the question and rather linked to the mail from neil.

@htorque I will have a better answer for you after the sprint
we should get a ton of work done too, we got gtk3 out of the way surprisingly early

@Amithkk sudo rm -rf / does not work on natty

@JorgeCastro nothing too bad ;)

@MNightShyamalan And Thank you for destroying my oneric VM

btw, @Oli can you make this a community wiki?

@MarcoCeppi thought it would be good to know when relevant steps changed instead of fixed typos, etc.
you are free to edit it ;)

I have found that with community editing and submitting that I stopped caring about CW and just let it go there naturally

Now that anyone can edit - CW is really meaningless except for polls

1:08 PM
polls, the worst of the worst. :p

anyone can edit?
are edit suggestions not only for questions?

Right, if you're under 2k you just submit an edit suggestion

oh, i remember approving an answer edit

Yeah, so it's pretty moot to have Community Wiki's

hehe askubuntu.com/users/7254/stefano-candori → got a lot of rep from that pimped answer :D

Q: How do I use gpg-agent as with ssh-agent+ssh-add?

Lekensteynssh-agent is very easy to use, I start it and add keys using ssh-add keyfile. After killing the process ssh-agent, all files are gone. How can I get the same behavior with gpg-agent? The closest program I found was gpg-preset-passphrase. But looking at the manual page of gpg-agent, it seems that...

@htorque I've turned that answer into a CW because that better reflects the community effort that has gone into the post. The original See this <link> was not a good answer.

@Amithkk I can not begin to tell you how much of a bad idea that is.

@Amithkk hi o/

@Oli thanks

Cant i revert to the older kernal ?

Oli
@Amithkk Yes. You pick them at grub (hold left shift at boot)

@Amithkk Unless you absolutely know what you're doing I don't recommend you try messing around with the kernel.

Oli
In fairness, it is quite fun.

@Lekensteyn yes it should be -i guess

1:25 PM
@Amithkk You manually installed the "3.0" linux kernel. You will have to manually install all other kernel packages including the headers.

I have fsck'd myself hard havent I?

There is still apt-get purge ;)

just download all packages and do sudo dpkg -i linux*.deb

@Amithkk In fairness, you were warned. :)

1:29 PM
if you're using the mainline ppa, it's three packages: image, headers, headers_all

Marco,I have but i have to take my chances soldier smile
Wish me luck, Im going to the dark world of kernal

soldiers do what they're told to :P

@Rinzwind what about placing panel @ the bottom?
I have tansferred the ssh key to most of the systems, but i have left few systems. Is it possible to find those systems? So that i can transfer the key to those systems. Or is it possible to get all the System IPS which i have transferred the keys?

1:45 PM
@Amithkk why ?

@karthick87 with sudo arp-scan -I [interfacename] ip/range, you can scan your whole network for machines. Next, you can use ssh onto them or retrieve their key with ssh-keyscan and compare it against your known_hosts list.

@Oli are you going outdoors or all indoors?

I just saw Justin Beiber on tv D:

@MarcoCeppi I can't get stacktack working in tumblr.

Oli
@JorgeCastro Bit of both.

@JorgeCastro They have Tumblr instructions

3:11 PM
I could never get it to work

@Oli oh, I was indoors and could never get the booster things to work.
So I used ethernet over power things, and they work awesome

Maybe it just doesn't work anymore

we haven't gotten it to work either
it had formatting issues

I can't even get it to render on my blog

Oli
3:13 PM
@JorgeCastro I'm considering how best to get some form of networking from our new house to the bottom of its quite long garden, where there's a giant shed (that I'm planning on having a small media centre/gym in)
I guess a power extension line with a HomePlug (et al) at each end would work.
140' (42m) is the distance it has to cover.
And that's perhaps a little conservative... It all depends on where I'm starting from in the house and where the extension line can come out. We haven't moved in yet so there are still a lot of unknowns.

@MarcoCeppi well basically it made ours unusable (to my memory).

yeah, definately look into Homeplug stuff, it's way more capable than you'd think

@RolandTaylor I've now become really determined to get this working.

at first I thought it would be some hokey thing, but like, you can PXE boot off of them and everything, they're quite cool
I get about 200mbit on them
I use it to stream 1080p to XBMC and everything

awesome

Oli
3:19 PM
I guess if it comes to it, I could always run some Cat6 down there next to the power line.

I also investigated running wire
my resulting conclusion was "nope, screw that, I'm not going up in that duct."

Oli
Not sure what condition the wiring is in yet either. I guess it's fairly new but the house is ~130 years old so that'll be fun to find out, I guess.
Moving house is fun.

I am moving in about a month
fun fun fun

Interesting, I'm moving next week

I would place CAT cables in any case if you have the chance to do so - there is nothing better. Doing it later is a pain.
we totally forgot this when refurbishing the home we live in now - too bad

3:31 PM
The new place I'm moving into has cat cables and outlets pre-run :)

can someone point me to a good umask guide? I'm not quiet understanding how to use it to set read/write/modify permissions

@sadmicrowave I think there is one on the site. Let me check
11
Q: What is "umask" and how does it work?

LekensteynI believe that umask is something that controls file permissions, but do not fully understand it. After running umask 0644 in a terminal, I cannot read the files I create with the command-line text editor nano. I noticed that the permissions of that file are set to 0022 instead of the default 07...

3:55 PM
hey! that fork bomb question reminds me of something I did a while ago in college :)

@MarcoCeppi so, if I'm understanding this correctly, a umask of 0000 gives read/write/modify/execute access

it's a very simple trick, but you can fry a CPU with it (if you tweak it enough)...

@sadmicrowave Correct. I typically use 022 as a umask which produces 755/644 permissions

@sadmicrowave in theory yes, but most programs remove the execute bit from files

    well, damn I was hoping that was my issue but I guess it's something else. I have mounted some network drives via fstab with the following lines:

 //128.251.108.xxx/Data/Agilent_Data /home/lv_admin/uslonsnas001 cifs cred=/etc/.na02passwd,rw,umask=0000,uid=www-data,gid=webgroup 0 0
 //128.251.108.xxx/c$/Agilent /home/lv_admin/uslonsapp003 cifs cred=/etc/.na02passwd,rw,umask=0000,uid=www-data,gid=webgroup 0 0

    but can't use the php command mkdir() on either of those drives....

What a mess.

hi all

@Zero Hey, nice to see you!

mhmm, let's i wanna install ubuntu 11.04 to my celeron 2.5 GHz PC, what you think guys, does it run "good" ? ohh, and does ubuntu team upgraded kernel and other things so ubuntu works more "stable" (200 lines kernel patch, etc.)

@Zero what have you currently installed? If you've 10.04, I'd just stick to it.
Otherwise, I would backup (preferably cloning using Clonezilla) everything and try an upgrade

5:32 PM
This time i'm with Win :/ Last time i was with debian (crunchbang)
Afcourse better performance gives and compiled kernel, which i compiled on debian and ubuntu, but then upgrades cames, problems cames too :|
By the way, sorry for bad EN :|

5:49 PM
