7:12 PM
@jrg: got the sources down pastebin.com/pVbea59v
how should I share files?

how big are they
and how many

well very few and very small
can put them on my own domain if u like

probably best.
you want a perm. home for them?

nah
just sharing desktop setup
may blog/post about it over weekend

cya all

7:21 PM
will upload it again just to brag about it :P
though I'm not good at gimp or similar so can't modify wallpaper a bit per requirements :-/

how did you build that (setup not graphics)

Hmmm, the kernel mailing list got pretty busy in the last couple of hours.

how many mails do you get a day (on that list)?

@rlemon: build = assembled the parts

@wisemonkey did you use a tool? what language would you need to know to script something like that? ect.. (smartass)

7:30 PM
nothing really :P

I'm comming from windows - So I know I can do most anything in c/c++ but what are people using on Ubuntu

hehe all I did was find proper colors :)

so if u go to that pastebin there are sources for wallpaper, conky, gtk theme
I should add covergloobus theme

so the CPU monitor and stuff are just widgets I can drag and drop

7:32 PM
@OctavianDamiean :-o

It is a really high traffic mailing list.

@rlemon its called conky u can't drag and drop but only need to look for x and y in script -- u can figure out placement ;)
and colors I used gpick to extract colors from wallpaper

@wisemonkey Say I wanted to write the next uber cool app for Ubuntu, and I needed to add to the Notifications area, Python would be my goto? (Windows I would do all in c#)

@htorque Linus is hilarious in most of his mails though. It is really worth a read. :)

yeah, he definitely is :)

7:35 PM
He is the drill sergeant of the kernel army. :D

@rlemon: u r asking question to a completely wrong person -- I'm hardware engineer :P
have no freaking idea
but I heard something dependent on python is being used these days

@OctavianDamiean you need such guys, else everything would fall apart

and kernel drama is usually hilarious

7:38 PM
@wisemonkey yea, I'm hardware / web / winforms

nice
then we can do it together :P

damn, I want to know but am afraid if I ask I will sound uber noobish...

u won't learn otherwise

so in Windows - if I wanted to do Anything winforms I would rely on c#. In Ubuntu / linux, what is the goto language?? is it python?

7:40 PM
@rlemon Don't worry.

I just ask at max people flame me :P
no harm there

or am I just going from c# to c/c++

There is GTK+ which provides widgets, signals and stuff like that.

basically what is the OO language of choice for Linux.

On Ubuntu it currently is Python.

7:42 PM
yup gtk+ and something new based on python I forgot name but it was funky :(
@AmithKK: no its Ubuntu 11.10

> Don't have millions of lines of duplicate definitions for crap that nobody cares about.
hehe

ok, and Python (literally know nothing about it, other than a few articles i've read here and there) would allow me to modify the OS and tie into things like notifications??

yeey my first silver badge
see if that helps :)
I guess its javascript for extensions

so to sum it up - to develop and contribute to the ubuntu community (assuming I already know C#, (can work with c/c++), and web crap (PHP, ASP, JavaScript, ect..) what languages and tools should I begin to equip myself with.

7:46 PM
@jrg TouchPad came :)

@wisemonkey seriously... omg this will be epic.

Woo yeaaah!
100 on my calc exam!
I am pumped, lol.

grats
100/500? :P

100/100 :P
Now I can maintain my sweet 99% average in that class

@rlemon Well, you can try to find a project that uses C#, although as far as I know mono got removed from the disk so they are moving away from it. If you know C/C++ you can help with a lot of projects!
Qt uses C++ among others.

7:48 PM
@rlemon: thats wat I could find :)

You could help with juju-gui for example.

well c/c++ I am having to brush back up on (covered it in school, but never actually needed it for work thus far so it's gone the way of the dodo)

It is a project started by our very own George which is in Qt C++.

i keep plugging c# as an example (it's the most complete OO language I know)

Then you should take a look at Python. ;)

Everything is an object.
However Ubuntu slowly appears to move away from Python.
It was Vala for some time and now it seems to be Go.
It doesn't harm to take a look at both.
That is Python and Go.

ohh yea Vala I was thinking Vola for sometime :-/
damn it if people gonna name it "Go" how hard that makes it to search

@OctavianDamiean Seriously.. 'Go'? Next they'll want you to use Dart

As long as it isn't Brainfuck I'm totally happy. :D
Go is pretty good actually.

So is dart... but there is better.

7:56 PM
it's google - it must be evil. :P

Google just likes to make shit up

However I fell in love with Python and will stick to it.

wasn't Go supposed to be the Java Killer? and Dart the JavaScript Killer?

Scala is the Java killer.
I'm not sure if I'd call Go the Scala killer though.

JavaScript > Java > Dart
I can't comment on Go - looked at it and turned away
Java is just a messy language

7:58 PM
I'm from the Java world and I can say that pretty much everything is above Java.

I would run over my own mother trying to avoid writing Java.

yeah right, nobody in the real world is looking for JEE programers ;)

Well they are but for very very wrong reasons.

One of them is consultants that are from the computer stone age so they stick with those technologies from the computer stone age.

He was looking at the wrong language for really awesome concurrency support. He should have taken a look at Scala.

I mean seriously ... consultants that still recommend something being written in Java should get slapped with a trout.

i don't care too much about the language. solving the actual problem is usually the harder part. :P

umm u guys r confusing me I was planning to learn OO with java now I dunno :(

8:04 PM
Well of course it is but you don't have to impose a lot of extra problems on your development department just because you use a badly designed programming language.
@wisemonkey go with Python.

@wisemonkey seriously... learn OO with JavaScript

Uhm, I'm going to say no.

in strict_mode

JavaScript is awesome but also pretty flawed.

@OctavianDamiean it's a matter of opinion here - js haters are haters because they expect a strict typed language. js is elegant and beautiful because of this.
flaws or undocumented features ;) ???

8:06 PM
ok I go python then

I don't like strictly typed languages ... on the contrary.
That is why I love Python because it is dynamically typed.

@OctavianDamiean i have to defend on the average complaint :D

well I think if I learn one other should be pretty much similar right?

@wisemonkey most OO languages follow similar conventions

However the more design pattern usage required the more it shows that the language is broken.

8:08 PM
x86 assembly, C, haskell - that's all you need (OOP is a waste of time). xD

yup then will start with python hopefully by month end I'll know a bit to help people
@htorque already know assembly and c

@rlemon If you want to know more about why I said that JS is flawed I recommend the book JavaScript: The Good Parts by Douglas Crockford

then go with python

@OctavianDamiean read it, own it, love it. Disagree the language is flawed. Flawed would infer it does not work as I expect it to..

Which it sometimes just doesn't. :D

8:10 PM
@htorque Magnetized needle and a steady hand.

Well that is probably not correctly phrased.
It is flawed in terms of design.

@rlemon :D

@OctavianDamiean Bingo!
but it is an interpreted language - so the 'flaws' are based on the vendors implementation
not the language itself.

Don't get me wrong, I like JS myself but I just wouldn't recommend it as a OOP beginners language.

I like to run a few times before I crawl..
makes crawling seem easier.

8:13 PM
With Python you never crawl, you always fly.
user image
3

LISP GO SPRY A# K HT
Lets go fly a kite
in programming languages

10 BEEP
20 GOTO 10
all you need
i miss goto.

10 HOME
20 SWEET
30 GOTO 10

@htorque Because it was so much fun debugging programs that use it? :P

don't write bugs. :P

8:22 PM
@htorque you must be a Business Analyst.

almost :D

Don't tell me you are a consultant.

lol

One that recommends Java.

i use java, so i don't recommend it. :D

8:28 PM
Then it isn't bad if you are a consultant. :P

i just realized that i have gnome-shell installed. i log into that as frequently as i boot into windows. >:D
\o/ unity \o/

I didn't like unity that much
I stick with shell

Even with the adult content scope released?! :P

lol

The comments on that OMG! Ubuntu! article are hilarious.

8:35 PM
ohh I gotta read comments

i try hard to not read comments on the internet - it's a waste of time most of the time.

well thats exactly why I read comments if I can't waste my time :P

i prefer watching youtube clips about cute little animal babies :D

I never even think of youtube

2
try it :D

8:38 PM
Neither do I but I wanted to know the community's stance on that topic.

wouldn't your "adult activity" get logged by zeitgeist? :D

Ubuntu 13.04 Fapping Ferret
hahaha

@htorque I don't know. Obviously I don't have that scope installed.

That is so awesome ... I want it!

8:44 PM
@OctavianDamiean: which book/link would u suggest to start with python?

Can you answer this? Multiple monitors, different resolutions break maximize button http://askubuntu.com/questions/38753/multiple-monitors-different-resolutions-break-maximize-button #unity

@wisemonkey My Python beginner book was on German unfortunately so I'm probably not the best one to ask about beginner books for Python but I can recommend two intermediate Python books.
However I heard that A Byte of Python should be good.

sure I would go with intermediate as long as I can keep up with them if I can't then will check for beginners :)
I'll look at it and how about learnpythonthehardway.org just cause I like it hard way :P

This is really an intermediate book.
This is a book with practical examples. I recommend both together.

ok then now starting some reading
thanks :)

8:50 PM
However make sure to get a printed copy of them.
1.) Because they are good books.
2.) It is fun to have a 1600 pages book in your shelf.
3.) For your eyes sake.

yup yup

lol I'll first go through the first 2

After I finished the Official Ubuntu Book and the Official Ubuntu Server Book (which arrived today).
I love books.

whoa I can't read paper this much
I prefer screen

8:56 PM
reading? isn't there an app for that? :D

If I could I'd have them give me the knowledge intravenous.

i know kung fu.
love it

Yea like that.

finally got around to decorating ^

:D

9:12 PM
Awesome!

10:00 PM
Goodbye Moon!

jrg
@rlemon I work it fine without a mouse.
it's just everything else that drives me crazy

i can't dismiss my snowman.
