Q: Tools to diagnose an Ubuntu problem

Luis AlvaradoOver time users will have several problems with Ubuntu as any other OS in the world. What tools and terminal commands exist in Ubuntu to help diagnose how the problem occurred and help solve it if it can be done. Problems like: Ubuntu Freezes after X time or when using Y app Ubuntu rebooted/hi...

i wonder if this'll become one huge list
@ajmitch syntax is [ tag: tagname ]

Quite likely, like most software-recommendation questions are
right, couldn't remember it :)

without the spaces ;P

doesn't matter since you can see the other questions tagged like that from the question you linked

A: How do I write man pages?

George EdisonI have written a rather extensive blog article about the topic, which you can find here: http://www.2buntu.com/2011/11/02/how-to-write-a-manpage/

It's a little odd having the answer and looking for the question :P

@GeorgeEdison :P
ugh i cant run Java applets in KDE...
it keeps causing Xorg to crash
and then i have to go into tty1 as root and killall Xorg
>.>

3:55 AM
you could just put the entire post in the answer
that'd be pretty awesole (:

@StefanoPalazzo he could... but he wants to bring publicity to 2buntu xD

fair enough (:

ooooooo

@RolandTaylor: There's a rather unusual comment pending approval.

@GeorgeEdison what comment where
:p

3:59 AM
It's not publicly viewable... it's... weird.

i still want to know it ;P
/me doesnt need the link, he wants to know why is weird

Well it appears that someone is quoting one of my other articles in the body of the comment.
It's not that kind of weird... just confusing.
@RolandTaylor: Also I have a request for the blog.
Can we please install the jQuery.Syntax plugin? It will add syntax highlighting to any code snippets.

4:14 AM
Oh sure

try this
`<?php
if ($link->link_image && $this->config->getTemParam('showImageInSummary',1) ) {
$this->plugin( 'ahreflistingimage', $link, 'class="image' . (($this->config->getTemParam('imageDirectionListingSummary','left')=='right') ? '':'-left') . '" alt="'.htmlspecialchars($link->link_name).'"' );
}?>
<h3><?php echo "\n"; ?>`

Make sure to get rid of the opening and closing tags.
Then you can paste it.

Hey OctavianDamiean, Can you help me php positioning?

10:14 AM
No. For those kind of problems there is Stack Overflow.

Ok thanks

is there a SE site when i'd like to know what kind of spider is sitting on my wall?

Probably.

It is in the commitment phase though.

Hi @StefanoPalazzo Can you help me php .tpl positioning Please?

@Achu, sorry?

Q: What can I do when getting "Sorry, we are no longer accepting questions from this account"?

ArjanWhile trying to ask a question, one could get: Oops! Your question couldn't be submitted because: Sorry, we are no longer accepting questions from this account. See http://goo.gl/C1Kwu to learn more. Why am I getting this message? Are deleted questions taken into account too? ...

Did you read this?

> If you tripped the heuristic by just a tiny bit, then writing a few quality answers that get upvoted might enable you to ask questions again. But as the internals of the filter are secret, there is no way to know for sure. And even if you're lucky then you're still very close to being banned again, if you get new downvotes.

So the problem is that you didn't put enough effort into your questions.

:( I'm getting a kernel panic trying to boot minix

@StefanoPalazzo ok thanks this is my .tpl file paste.ubuntu.com/728036
and the position looks like this
and i want to put the name of the person under the picture
But i can't found any solution

you'll have to find the styesheet
usually called "style.css" or something .css

10:32 AM
ok let me show you the css file

have you written this?

No
it is a module

I can barely scroll to the end of the file
I can't read these thousand lines and figure out the problem for you. but the general procedure is like this:

I have a canon pixma IP1600 and in ubuntu 11.04 it worked well. When I updated to Ubuntu 11.10 the update wen't rong and I had to reinstall Ubuntu from scratch. Then I noticed that if I enable the option to encrypt my home folder the printer did not work but with the home folder not encrypted it works just fine.
Does anyone else has this problem also?

find the selector that controls the elements you're interested in (the selector it the thing at the beginning of all the definitions in your css) and the corresponding markup (the html), then you can move that around
@Pedro that's a weird bug
@Pedro do you know how to report bugs?

10:37 AM
ok... i'm not sure how can i do that. but i will give it a try again a couple of days :)

@Achu if you're using chrome, you can do this: right click on the name and select "inspect element". the css selectors will be in the right hand column of the inspector window

@StefanoPalazzo I already reported in launchpad but till today I did not received any answer

you can play around with them in chrome, and if you're happy, port that over to the stylesheet
if you can't be bothered to find them, just define them again at the bottom of the file
@Pedro that's great. yes they usually start looking at bugs once a second user confirms it
so you'll just have to be patient I fear :\

@StefanoPalazzo Ok... Thank you anyway ;)

10:54 AM
after looking through hundreds of spider images, i give up. :D

@htorque give me a pic please

it's no indian monster spider :D
just a little home spider thingy

@htorque but still......

@StefanoPalazzo Thank you for your help :) im trying the way you recommended

i thought it's part of the oecobiidae familiy, but after seeing pics i doubt that, as the legs are too long.

10:58 AM
LOL, htorque, the spider identd!

btw, now they are all in spider heaven. >:D

O.o
some weird awful smell from my printer

Oli

where'd you find that?

i feel well-prepared after reading all that :D

this is brilliant

yeah, a couple of those are really great.

Oli
11:33 AM
Argl. Why isn't sorted(..) working today?!
>>> sorted(list(Tag.objects.usage_for_model(Title)), key=lambda a: a.name)
[<Tag: Appraisals>, <Tag: Change>, <Tag: Coaching>, <Tag: Communication>, <Tag: Competencies>, <Tag: Feedback skills>, <Tag: First line management>, <Tag: Interviewing>, <Tag: Leadership>, <Tag: Managing people>, <Tag: Objective setting>, <Tag: Performance management>, <Tag: Personal development>, <Tag: Selection interviewing>, <Tag: absenteeism>, <Tag: attendance>]
where .name is the name you see being outputted as part of the object. Any ideas what's going on?

@Oli .name is a string? (unicode object?)
if you give a non-numerical key so sorted(), it'll take it's hash()

Oli
@StefanoPalazzo Yeah

you could make it a bytes() (py3k) or str() object (py2) instead, that should treat it as a list of integers
but that'll take the hash() as well now come to think of it
import locale
locale.setlocale(locale.LC_ALL, 'en_US.UTF-8') # vary depending on your lang/locale
assert sorted((u'Ab', u'ad', u'aa'),
  key=cmp_to_key(locale.strcoll)) == [u'aa', u'Ab', u'ad']

Can you answer this? How to enable Empathy chat room notifications? http://askubuntu.com/questions/69335/how-to-enable-empathy-chat-room-notifications #gnomeshell

Oli
For some reason it's ranking lower case under anything uppercase. I thought that was supposed to be the other way around.

11:47 AM
it's probably best to just lowercase everything anyway
uhm
useradd -m stefano
useradd: not found
that can't be good

@StefanoPalazzo its adduser :)

is it?! heh :D

Oli
I thought it was both

thanks Amith, yes that was it
(I am still on Minix)

@Oli That is on linux not its big daddy minix
@StefanoPalazzo Wow.. school something?

11:58 AM
no, just for fun
it's so much better than Unity
2
:P

@StefanoPalazzo You got that right!

I found out Minix are hiring, so I thought I'd give it another try
though I fail to see any reason to use it for anything serious

@StefanoPalazzo They still use it?

they still develop it, even

Stares
Wow

12:02 PM
so far, Minix, to me, means staring at make
so yeah, it's a brilliant os

nothing is better than unity. if you're having problems, you are just holding it wrong.

xfce is getting on my nerves as well. It's clearly my fault

isn't that motivation enough to write your own complete DE?

yes that's exactly what the world needs :D

Oli
@htorque I've strongly considered rewriting gnome-panel (or it's GTK3 counterpart) in Python. I'm still not ruling it out.

12:09 PM
@StefanoPalazzo Im on XFCE :P
@Oli What in the name of GNU are you waiting for? Do it!

if you do that Oli, let me know. I'd like to help out if I can

Oli
@StefanoPalazzo Every time I get serious about it I get flooded with work. It's actually a pretty decent way to make money. All I have to say is "ARGL DAMN YOU GNOME! I'm going to reinvent the wheel but make it round this time!" and I'll have two or three projects that sap me of all my time.
I will start it one day (assuming there isn't an alternative released). And it will be good.

the proper way to do it would be to fork gnome 2 and just package and maintain it, but nobody wants to do that
obviously :)

Oli
I'm not that hot about the original gnome-panel and the new one does have some nice features (applet alignment) but it seems that every step forward means that they have to break seventeen other things. Currently the window list doesn't really have a clue where windows are on a multi-monitor setup so things are minimised and restored to the wrong screen. And indicator-applet (or whatever it's called) is made of poo.

12:17 PM
'lo again.
Last UDS day. :(

@OctavianDamiean hi
not a lot of sessions for me this time. audio had some problems, quite often there was no communication with irc, sparse etherpad usage. :-(
do we know where uds-q will happen?

I don't know yet but what I know is that I don't care where it is. I'll be there in person even if it is on moon.

:D

has anybody here ever written a file system?

if it's in central europe i'd like to attend it as well. :-)

12:23 PM
@StefanoPalazzo WTH?

@StefanoPalazzo nope, i was busy writing my own operating system :D
Multi-Monitor Support
2011-11-04 09:00..09:55 in bonaire-5

Nope. Didn't try that so far.

I keep hitting the same problem, no matter what approach I use. I first tried a file allocation table (FAT? yes.) and then a B-Tree, but I can't figure out how to make space for the table/journal without moving files around like mad
and all the info on the internets is too high-level to help me understand what existing filesystems do

Pre-allocated space for the table/journal.
Might be the worst idea ever but it is the first thing that came to my mind.

Hi @jrg

12:26 PM
I tried that, ended up with at least 256 megabytes

Normally I would just allocate 2 megs, then double that every time I need more space

jrg
@AmithKK hello hello hello. :)

but I can't do that of course, if the fs is more than a couple of gigabytes

12:28 PM
this was my other idea:
the first bytes until the first ";" give me the size of the first file,
then I skip as many bytes to get the size of the next file and so on
"2;AA3;BBB1;C" like that

Tried asking that question on Unix and Linux (might be off-topic) or on Stack Overflow?
Back in a second. Restarting.

jrg
@OctavianDamiean the uptime gods are mad, WHY DID YOU REBOOT?!

Well updates and stuff. :D
I'm wondering. Why don't we have a voip communication platform? I mean something like Teamspeak.

because that's 90% noise and 10% talk.

12:41 PM
3 years game clan experience :D

Anybody remember Microsoft Sam?

one day a clan member forgot to turn off the mic when his gf paid him a visit. haha, that was good fun.
Microsoft Sam... yeah, think i heard of that
wasn't that text-to-speech?

yep

sounded like dr. sbaitso :D

12:43 PM
Well yea ... I mean there is push to talk. If people are too comfortable to use it ...

Oli
I really miss my little chats with Dr. Sbaitso

Sound Blaster Acting Intelligent Text to Speech Operator?

well, "intelligent"
you'll find it on youtube, judge yourself :D

Hey @htorque your session Finger print authentication is after this one.
Oh god ... Community Bug Involvement and Juju Charm Documentation.
I'll be in the Juju session.

@OctavianDamiean yeah, like the boot speed session, both got re-scheduled to friday (where everyone is exhausted or already gone :D)
i got no charm for juju ;P
