12:02 AM
I actually have to delete all StackApplet packages from the PPA.

would this be okay for the community promotion ads?
could it be a bit of a copyright problem?

Hmmm... good question.
Just a small note: the grey background looks superimposed on the crayon artwork.

that's google's work :)

Yeah the gods, at Google may not like that

it's what you get when you open plus.google.com in incognito mode

12:09 AM
Or the lawyers anyways
3

@GeorgeEdison echo | cat file1.txt file2.txt
where echo is your program. something like that?
@TheX okay I'll have a re-think. it's probably better to do something original anyway. OMG ubuntu have done a nice job with their ad for the omg page

:-D

@StefanoPalazzo Doesn't that pipe the output of echo into cat or have I got it backwards?

That isn't to say that I don't like it (because I do) just not sure if Google would.

One sec... gotta restart Chrome...

12:14 AM
@GeorgeEdison of course. I've got to stop using echo. here's a better example: cat test.py~ test.c~ | less
don't ask me why the first one worked anyway.

@StefanoPalazzo Nevertheless it worked!
Anyway... thanks.

eyes closing, gn ppl

@BrunoPereira That's a good time to take a break :)

see you

12:18 AM
Anyone know if there are any clients that support Windows Live!'s new XMPP option?

I'm not sure about right now but I've used aMSN
was pretty goo
try it if u haven't

I use emesene normally, but I'm specifically interested in the XMPP option.

hmm frankly I don't understand wat XMPP is

I want to see if it's possible to get it to work with Gajim. It uses OAuth afaik, and Empathy will be getting support for it by about GNOME 3.4, but I'm really not a big Empathy fan, so I'd prefer to see support added to Gajim or something similar.
@wisemonkey jabber. It's what Gtalk uses :)

yes I know the terms but don't know which program uses what :(
neither do I know the protocols themselves

12:22 AM
oh I see
Well,

u can still check if aMSN supports XMPP or not :)

MSN (Windows Live!) was built from IRC (IIRC), and then because it's own thing, Jabber/XMPP is basically XML messaging, and um... the other stuff... too much to list :)
And no, aMSN surely does not :)
I don't even know if aMSN is still being developed at all :D

ohh ok well then thats how much I know about it :P
plus stuff u told me just now

I wanted to make my own IM once, that's why I got into all that stuff :)
(but that was back when I was a teen :P)

haha
that make u sound like senile

12:26 AM
:P
I'm only 23 :D
(24 in 35 days :)

much younger than me ;)

:>
If I start getting rep at a good pace again, I'll start giving bounties - but I need to find some good questions to answer :P

12:48 AM
After finishing my dark sidebar Ambiance mod, my life with Ubuntu is now almost perfect...should I overwrite my unneeded 11.04 partition with the 12.04 daily build now?

tbh, I'm getting bored.
I need more excitement in my life...the kind that only the bleeding edge can provide.

:D
I feel ya
I run a lot of bleeding edge stuff myself :)
I love Nightlies

I'm just wondering if that's a good idea though, because I always hear about the vague "don't install alpha/pre-alpha on bare hardware" warning but I feel a virtual machine just wouldn't do it justice.
I think running 11.10 from Beta 1 got me a bit addicted, lol.
I'll still be running it side-by-side with 11.10 on here whenever I want to get something serious done, of course.

I would say go for it
You will probably find some things break from time to time, but the goal for 12.04 as I understand it is to make it easier for testers :)

12:57 AM
I actually found testing and reporting bugs to be quite fun. Eventually I'd also like to be able to submit some fixes, but only time and my skills will tell.

Go for it!
:)

Also, someone should remind me to join Google Plus and follow Ask Ubuntu after the former removes their real name restriction. I guess it's not too hard for someone who's determined to figure out who I actually am, but still...

1:15 AM
I always keep running 2 versions of ubuntu on one of my machine
one always alpha / beta other stable

Read about this on Slashdot earlier (my apologies if someone already talked about this)...did anyone know that the Linux kernel itself has codenames, too?

well alpha version can not necessarily mean ubuntu only
and no :-o
nice but how r those decided>
?

@wisemonkey Did you ever have any problems with GRUB getting messed up from doing that? That's one potential concern I have with dual-booting with 12.04.
I guess Linus decides the names...it says they come from the kernel's git repo.

not really
and I like sabertoothed squirrel
3

Me too :D

1:18 AM
I didn't have problems because of dual booting linux as many I had while dual booting windows and linux :P

I actually prefer a lot of the names on the list to what Mr. Shuttleworth would probably pick for Ubuntu..."Jeff Thinks I Should Change This, But To What?"

specially if both distributions r from debian -- need me to remember only one set of commands to fix stuff :P
haha

@wisemonkey So if the installer asks, do you think I should install 12.04's version of GRUB, or keep what's on my machine and just run the usual update-grub afterwards?

@WarriorIng64 how will Google know it's your real name?
htorque is on G+ with a really weird concoction for a name :P

@RolandTaylor I already have Google Docs, Gmail, YouTube...they're everywhere. They know who I am already. I'd say they were out to get me, except they probably already would have.

1:22 AM
@WarriorIng64: if u planning to switch 12.04 pretty often (which is generally the case) just update-grum
grub*

@WarriorIng64 either way... (and I understand some people are paranoid) what difference does it make :D?

I'm mostly trying to keep others from knowing my name.

People know who I am :) - so what?

and I could have sworn that u need to remember one more command to update grub but damn I couldn't find my source
:-/

What are they going to do, hug me?

1:23 AM
@wisemonkey update-initramfs -u?

nope something like make-grub or compile-grub

stalks people with real names online
because people with real names should be stalked

@RolandTaylor I don't mind using real name but this one is cooler ;) :P

begins with Marco Ceppi

(That one I also know by heart because of bug 850895)

1:24 AM
@wisemonkey yeah but G+ and FB are not exactly Stack Exchange :)
they are networks...
for people to interact in a more lax way :)

ohh G+ has my real name

For example, I don't use proper grammar when talking to my family on FB :)

Sometimes I even use our local dialect :)

FB is evil, IMO. I don't like digital black holes where anyone can know anything about you...I'm a bit more private than most.

1:25 AM
sorry you may hate me over here then :(

I deleted my fb :P

@WarriorIng64 you my friend, need to be less paranoid :)
Learn to literally not care :)

@WarriorIng64: yesss so wats the command?

@wisemonkey Your account is gone, but your data's still there...the advertisers won't give you up that easy.

1:27 AM
hmm delete not deactivate?

ohh hmm I'll keep this one in mind
but lemme search again

I heard Facebook still doesn't delete anything they got from you after you leave their service
Or at least not all of it

can you stack multiple case matches in bash?

brb
...and back

1:34 AM
@WarriorIng64: Better solution: If u r planning to just see how new version of OS is use it casually (some browsing listening to music chatting filing bugs etc) put it on USB stick, I had one external HDD setup few days back

I dunno...I think I'd still prefer the speed of a full install and leave my USB free for other things.

currently I'm trying enlightenment.org
ohh I've one 4GB laying around and 500GB HDD both r pretty much not used for any purpose at all
so good to test stuff :D

I tried LiveUSB sessions of Mint and elementary OS out before. I didn't care for Mint, but I liked how speedy elementary was. I think I'd rather wait for the much-hyped Luna release before installing it, though.

If I like OS on USB stick then I put it on external HDD
yup elementary seemed simple and fast

I have an external HDD, but I use it to back up pretty much everything important to me...so, too important to be messing with ;)

1:38 AM
lol have other 1.5TB for that
transfered my projects to UbuntuOne
so nothing much to care about apart from documents

I also keep my projects (school and personal) on U1, but I still believe in a good offline backup solution for redundancy

hmm

I copy all of my stuff to my external HDD bi-annually
Plus, I don't have enough space on U1 for all my lecture audio recordings

o.O
thats plenty of space :-o

You'd be amazed at how quickly 5GB fills up, actually

1:43 AM
I prefer pencil and paper to keep track of lectures
hehe yea the way u described it pretty much not even one semester

I use a combination of Google Docs/Xournal/pencil and paper to take notes, but I still get recordings of everything in case I miss something I want to revisit later

whoa whoa u r quite thorough

Then of course, any paper notes I take also get scanned in on my desktop and put into my complex folder hierarchy
And just think: everything I do for school pretty much is because once I ran into a problem I later solved by adding onto what I already did. It's insane but it works. :)

@MarcoCeppi: Are you around? Can I please bother you to try my ThinkUp charm? Repository is here.
I just want to make sure it works. I think I've finished it.

ok next time I need to keep something safe I know whom to contact :)

1:56 AM
@JorgeCastro: ...or if you'r not too busy either... :)

@GeorgeEdison just got home, trying it in the next few minutes!

@GeorgeEdison Branching now!
@JorgeCastro I'm taking a stab at charm-helper

heh, nice!

two functions so far

hoping it works...
@MarcoCeppi: Wait - one sec.
I commit'ed but forgot a push.
Try running a bzr pull again. Sorry about that.

2:01 AM
np

Revision 9 is the latest.

/me pulls
ok
after it's up and running
do I just put the IP address in a browser?

Yes.
You will need the MySQL charm too though and add a relation for it.

Everything else should just take care of itself.

2:04 AM
good to know
ok I think I found a problem

???
That never happened to me... and I used the exact same command.

so close
thinkup does work though
SQLSTATE[HY000] [2002] Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)
probably because of the relationship error
oh dude one moment
I think I have an old mysql charm laying around
let me redo

Yeah, that happened to me too and I had to restart it.

hmm, same error on the relation

I had to restart Juju :P
That is an interesting point though... I have yet to figure out why it behaves so badly when relations are added / removed.

2:13 AM
I think I found the error
requires:
db: mysql
interface: mysql
that's what you have
wordpress has this:

Right.

requires:
db:
interface: mysql
I bet that's the problem

What does that do?

I think your syntax is wrong
let me try it

db defines kind of the scope
then it names the interface
do it's really

2:15 AM
it looks like you have mysql in there twice

requires:
  db:
    interface: mysql
so you can have a postgres interface for db, a mongo interface for db, etc

Wait... that's not what I have.
requires:
  db:
    interface: mysql
^--- That's what should be in metadata.yaml.

it wasn't
so I removed it
and still get the same error. :-/

Hmm... how did that get in the file?

dunno
either way
the one in the repo looks right
and the error is still there

2:20 AM
Hmm...
Can you SSH into the thinkup instance and check /var/www/config.inc.php?
That contains the configuration data.
...and should contain the host, username, password, etc. for MySQL.
The host should match the IP address of the server running MySQL.

ah
it looks boiler plate
$THINKUP_CFG['db_host'] = 'localhost'; //On a shared host? Try mysql.yourdomain.com, or see your web host's documentation.
$THINKUP_CFG['db_type'] = 'mysql';
$THINKUP_CFG['db_user'] = 'your_database_username';
$THINKUP_CFG['db_password'] = 'your_database_password';
$THINKUP_CFG['db_name'] = 'your_thinkup_database_name';
$THINKUP_CFG['db_socket'] = '';
$THINKUP_CFG['db_port'] = '';
@MarcoCeppi I think this guy needs an account merge: askubuntu.com/questions/81156/…

So it looks like the DB hook didn't run...
...or it came upon an error.
Does juju status report any error for the relation?

relations: {}
That error probably means they didn't relate
heh

Yeah.

Remove Kernel 3.1 http://askubuntu.com/questions/81900/remove-kernel-3-1 #kernel

2:34 AM
I put the error in the bug report
we'll see what mark mims says

@MarcoCeppi: Does it run for you?
@JorgeCastro Sorry that it won't run for you - you being the one that got me to write it in the first place.

it's ok man
it's just a bug
we're like, almost there dude

I wish I knew if the bug was with my code or not...

@GeorgeEdison Haven't tested yet

...it does work for me after all... but it always works for the developer :)

2:38 AM
I'm waiting for ec2 to restroy

are you guys trying with ec2 or local?
/me pulls out the laptop, bbias

I use EC2 for everything
Almost done

@JorgeCastro Local.
I don't have an ec2 account.

Anyone in here mind helping me t-shoot re-installation of netdiscover on BT5?
root@bt:/tmp/install/netdiscover-0.3-beta6# make
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
I just finished running ./configure

@Iszi That means there is no Makefile in the directory.
Can you run ls in the directory so we can see what's in it?

root@bt:/tmp/install/netdiscover-0.3-beta6# ls
acconfig.h aclocal.m4 ChangeLog config.h.in config.sub configure.in depcomp INSTALL libtool Makefile.am missing NEWS src
acinclude.m4 AUTHORS config.guess config.log configure COPYING doc install-sh ltmain.sh Makefile.in mkinstalldirs README TODO

I'll do a code review later tonight for you

Oh wait... I think I found my problem.
Error at the end of the ./configure output that I didn't notice.
configure: error: Cannot find libnet.h - You need libnet installed.

@MarcoCeppi Woohoo!

Guessing I need to pull that down via apt-get?

2:49 AM
@MarcoCeppi: You now just need to click "Log in" and then register.
Hmm... plugins need to be activated...
But the email sending works.
@Iszi Yes.

@Iszi sudo apt-get build-dep netdiscover
should get you everything

@JorgeCastro Thanks. 'Cause apt-get install libnet got me nowhere.
Guess something else is missing in BT5...
E: You must put some 'source' URIs in your sources.list

@Iszi Oh, you must not have any source repositories added.
What is the contents of /etc/apt/sources.list?

Sidenote: I need to remember that CTRL+C doesn't copy text from a terminal.
root@bt:/etc/apt# cat sources.list
deb http://all.repository.backtrack-linux.org revolution main microverse non-free testing
deb http://32.repository.backtrack-linux.org revolution main microverse non-free testing
deb http://source.repository.backtrack-linux.org revolution main microverse non-free testing

ohh yey didn't know u get badges for talking in chat room as well

3:01 AM
@Iszi You need libnet1-dev.
Try apt-get installing that.

moreover didn't know these can be starred :)

@MarcoCeppi: I fixed the plugin issue.
(...and pushed the changes.)

@GeorgeEdison Worked. Now to retry ./configure

@GeorgeEdison waiting for first-time bootstrap on my laptop

Crap. There's a problem in my modified oui.h
Can I do a grep for multiple criteria? Like for "error" OR "warning"?
Nevermind. Re-running make gave me a slim enough output.

3:10 AM
egrep "error|warning"
@Iszi Just use egrep -------^.

Looks like make doesn't write to STDOUT anyway.

Reruning make will have it pick up where it left off.

I think I see what happened. I used CONCATENATE() in Excel to put together the lines in oui.h from IEEE's oui.txt, but apparently some of the lines in the TXT file contain characters that you don't want to drop willy-nilly in a .h file.

Correct.
Votes please: --------^

3:32 AM
does that really need to be an ad? Surely a post on meta is fine?

Erm... what does middle-click do in a terminal?
'cause I just did that.

Primary Selection

@MarcoCeppi ?

So, it's not a terminal thing, it's an xserver thing.
Whenever you Highlight text in Ubuntu it gets put into Primary selection
it's like a secondary clipboard

Okay, and what if you highlight text and then middle-click?

3:40 AM
Go head, highlight some text in chat, then middle click in the box down ehre
Middle click is like "Paste from Primary Selection"
so Highlighting text is like Copy, Middle-Click is paste

Not running the chat in my linux box.

Ah
well, do it with anything
Open LibreOffice and highlight/Mouse 3

Anyway, here's the latest output from make. Look like I got it right?
root@bt:/tmp/install/netdiscover-0.3-beta6# make
make  all-recursive
make[1]: Entering directory `/tmp/install/netdiscover-0.3-beta6'
Making all in src
make[2]: Entering directory `/tmp/install/netdiscover-0.3-beta6/src'

	  -c -o misc.o `test -f 'misc.c' || echo './'`misc.c; \
	then mv -f ".deps/misc.Tpo" ".deps/misc.Po"; \
	else rm -f ".deps/misc.Tpo"; exit 1; \
	fi
/bin/sh ../libtool --mode=link gcc -DDEBUG_LEVEL_2 -Wall -g -g -O2   -o netdiscover  main.o ifaces.o screen.o misc
Oh yeah... that totally didn't work.
More specifically, make and make install probably did their job but I'm pretty sure I screwed up oui.h royally.

3:57 AM
@JorgeCastro: Why not? I wouldn't have known if it weren't for the message here in chat on the right.

Okay, I think I may have screwed up more than just oui.h
So, yeah... I tried to implement this:
2
A: How can I update the OUI list used for Netdiscover?

JanderThe OUI list is compiled into the Netdiscover binary, so you'll have to recompile it to update the list. The list itself is stored in src/oui.h in the Netdiscover source tree. It should be pretty easy to add new entries -- just make sure you keep the { NULL, NULL } at the end of the list, becau...

Odd... no onebox?
Anyway, I tried implementing that and ran into a couple problems: 1.) Quotation marks in oui.h where they don't belong. 2.) Buffer overflow when running netdiscover, after fixing 1. and re-compiling.
The really annoying bit is there's over 15,000 lines in oui.h to check for bugs and I've only got half a clue what I'm doing.

4:34 AM
Yay. New user profile!!!
Looks much better.
Should all questions related to gnome-shell be tagged gnome3?

no
I don't really see the point of gnome-shell/gnome3 tags and renaming stuff

Ok. I am just bored. I will do some useful stuff.

do you have access to that?

Yes. It used to look different.

do that like once a day
go through every tab once a day
and that will be awesome

4:48 AM
Sure. Something to feed for my boredom is great. :)

just click on review for each question
check it, and/or fix it or just vote on it
do that 1000 times and you get a badge!

Thanks :)

5:28 AM
formatting works in preview but not in the final answer?

@JorgeCastro Looking at it right now myself...you seem to be right.

that makes no sense
oh well, I guess revert it?
but link up the question though

Q: Grab Handles appearing randomly, causes erratic mouse behavior

DovalI did a clean install of Ubuntu 11.10 recently. Every so often, Grab Handles will appear on the active window. Sometimes they simply disappear after a few seconds without causing me any problems. Other times, the mouse appears already grabbing the window (like when you grab the center handle) a...

In my experience, numbered/bulleted list formatting does not seem to play nicely with other things like quotation blocks. Perhaps those are bugs?

maybe

Can you answer this? System shows "Battery Critically low" http://askubuntu.com/questions/81680/system-shows-battery-critically-low #powermanagement

@jokerdino Umm...interesting answer, to say the least.

I am digging out weird answers today.
For the sanity's sake, I am going to do some translating work. ;)

Interesting to note that he used all caps in his answers (there are two of them?), yet used normal capitalization in his comment.

Yes indeed. Comments are just fine.

Haha...maybe I'm just weird like this, but I just had the mental image of Billy Mays yelling out Ask Ubuntu answers in a commercial, then using an indoor voice for the fine text/disclaimer at the end. It's kinda like that.
Sometimes I think I need more sleep.

5:54 AM
you are just right. :P

I just got curious, and looked at his two answers' revision histories. It somehow gets even weirder; apparently one of the answers was a near-perfect duplicate of the other one...?
I visit Memebase and see all sorts of strange stuff posted on there, but I feel it's safe to say this tops all of that easily.

6:10 AM
cya tomorrow everyone

Sorry, got distracted.
bye roland

Why isn't this a native part of the JavaScript language?

6:30 AM
Is that shutter?

That is shutter

The icon says "yes"; the menu says "no".
You did click the icon to the left of it, right?

He is asking about the icon. Not the menu.

Yeah i'm asking the icon

So, yeah the icon is shutter.

6:33 AM
Then yes, that is most definitely Shutter.
Too bad Roland went off of chat a little too early to see this:

Q: Are there any other sources for Ubuntu 9.10?

jasoncruz98I am now using ubuntu 11.10 but I would like to download ubuntu 9.10 for testing purposes (Compiz experimental plugins). My bandwith is very slow, so I am using a download manager that will support downloading files from multiple sources (Downthemall Firefox extension). The problem is, I can only...

i saw that icon on many tutorials i have installed shullter but i don't have that icon :)

Apparently this guy is still at it for trying to get his experimental Compiz plugins working...I noticed Roland was involved in answering many of his questions.

@GeorgeEdison Wow! Nice one!

Nice? Epic epic fail.

6:43 AM
I don't consider myself very strong with the terminal, but I do know the basic commands and I know exactly what that would do. Yikes!
