9:00 PM
@Alvar fwiw, i prefer commandline :P
so therefore the hardware is irrelevant
except for mac

Oh boy. Not again.

their hardware is overpriced
@OctavianDamiean i once started a microwar over the dispute over Macs and PC hardware
the police had to get involved.

7 hours ago, by Octavian Damiean
Banging things is an essential part of UDS.

CHARMS

9:03 PM
@OctavianDamiean WE DO NOT NEED TO KNOW THIS ABOUT YOU, OCTAVIAN!
;P

So I was searching for Juju on google, I found a lot of interesting results
none that had to do with the session today

Juju is awesome!

or anything related

Q: How do I get started with Juju?

Jorge CastroI want to mess with Ubuntu Juju, how do I get started?

9:05 PM
@TheEvilOne I have a short fuse when it comes to people with no arguments to why a mac is bad saying "it just is" IF this was IRL I could have hit you....

I <3 Juju

The sound of those cans makes me thirsty.

I'm writing a bunch of charms

You in the Juju session right now?

Yes

9:09 PM
Nice. :)

unity greeter session got axed, now i got nothing to listen to. :...(

clouds are evil.
> Default Apps Discussion
not exciting this cycle

Clouds are evil? You sure?
Been bitten by one?

clouds bring rain
GO HOME, CLOUD!
> 1) porting music store to GTK3 is blocked on banshee ported to GTK3 or switching to RB

9:13 PM
rain is good, look at the farmers

yeah, back to RB :D :D

@Alvar and IF this were in real life, and you tried to hit me, you'd likely have a large gaping knife wound on your arm. I AM trained to defend myself
(I also carry a combat knife ;P)
puts @htorque into a cloud
goes back to writing code

I have a Sony VAIO and it is equipped with an ambient light sensor and backlit keyboard but it doesn't work on Ubuntu , anyone knows how can I fix it?

learn to touch-type :P

:D

9:28 PM
@lazyPower: Took your advice: 2buntu.com/2011/11/02/how-to-write-a-manpage

@htorque who did you direct that statement to?

@TheEvilOne: I wrote that manpage tutorial.

@GeorgeEdison i see :P
i would like to suggest an edit
"which you can open up in your text editor of choice (be it nano or Gedit)" -> "which you can open up in your text editor of choice (be it nano, Gedit, kate, vim, or whatever)"

Geany

9:39 PM
I just wanted to provide two examples - a console app and a graphical app.
It really doesn't matter what you use.

@GeorgeEdison so if i chose to edit the file at the raw bytes level...?
:P

(Well, don't use Microsoft Word - that'd be a headache. Plus it's not a text editor anyway.)

@GeorgeEdison lol... MS Word...
you shouldnt talk about such evil here :P
it enrages The Evil One :P

@TheEvilOne If hand-encoding UTF-8 character entities is your thing...

@GeorgeEdison you still forgot vim
:P

jrg
9:45 PM
Who poked me...?

I didn't.

jrg
YAY CLOUDS

They are everywhere!
@StefanoPalazzo Once your new version of Victory Chat is out you should totally make a Juju Charm!

I thought the same thing watching the keynote yesterday, that would be brilliant

jrg
Agreed, a VC Juju charm would be awesome.

9:48 PM
There is a Charm session on right now.

as far as I know, I don't have to do anything to make couchdb scale, and VC is running behind a reverse-proxy anyway
so that might just work

@StefanoPalazzo TOTALY DO IT
We should also build a Charm for the AU servers

jrg
And I can't listen because I'm busy with Precise. :P

OMG
AU Data severs would be awesome to charm
OMG
This would be awesome

9:50 PM
OMG
You could just have it throw up the proxy spin up units, so much awesome could be done

it's like packaging on steroids, probably everything that has one or more big dependencies, like apache, should not be a package but a charm
3
has anyone ever tried using the official method to set up wordpress? it's less than ideal...

By official method you mean the Wordpress installer?

no, the ubuntu package

What's a charm?

@GeorgeEdison It's awesome. But it's for Juju

9:52 PM
P.S. Just uploaded a new data dump index.

Yea that is all you need to know really.
Just use them they are awesome. :D

Seriously though... how do charms relate to Juju?

@GeorgeEdison JuJu is sort of a "language to describe service hierarchies"

you can say "I want six load balancers, two app servers, five static file servers, ninety-seven million mysql servers" and press "go"

9:53 PM
Oh I get it now.
It sounds like they took all my good ideas from JetServer :P

Oh well... so it would be great if the data server got ported... I see your point now @MarcoCeppi.
Too bad my hands are full packaging it right now.

There goes my time to study machine learning. Let's create Charms! :D

jrg
@htorque Over here, it only wants to remove these: libdjvulibre-dev libjpeg62-dev libmagickcore-dev libmagickwand-dev libtiff4-dev libwmf-dev
Ok, here goes. precisely jumps

@StefanoPalazzo I think that Gan Gan or Odondo would be an awesome name for VC.

10:00 PM
what do they mean?

Both are African names for drums used to communicate.

looks like Odondo is taken

aimlessly wonders around

Gan Gan isn't but it doesn't give any good results in google

10:01 PM
Yeah, every time I see VC I think of Visual C++ :)
...or venture capital :)

I think of the victoria cross (:

jrg
How did I not know about @ubuntustatus?!

Alternatively there is Lunna, Kalangu or Tama.

jrg
Eh, I like Lunna.

yeah Lunna is nice
and not taken

10:04 PM
That could also allow a nice logo.

I think of Crown Victoria...

hey @TheX, man I haven't seen you here in a long time

Indeed. Hey there!

jrg
@TheX WHOA. where did you come from?! :D

@StefanoPalazzo yo... been @OctavianDamiean hello... been very busy with the start of school...
@jrg I wondered in last night... the cat drug me in...

10:05 PM
fantastic

@jrg \o/

How are you guys doing?

i still haven't rebooted, maybe i should try it :D

Good good. Getting myself into a lot of work I have no idea about. :P

I'm on xfce, so I'm doing great :P
(not to be taken too seriously)

10:06 PM
I got my swag in the mail, what a week ago, and that got me thinking I should stop in the chat room...

Anyone know where I can get a text copy of the CC By-SA 3.0 license?

jrg
@TheX lol
@GeorgeEdison yeah, hangon a moment

btw... my wife told me I can never wear the t-shirt in public....

@StefanoPalazzo If you don't want to go for one of those names then Bullroarer or Turndun would also be pretty nice. That is a communication device of the Australian Aborigines.

jrg
10:08 PM
that's the legal code, is that what you wanted?
BULLROARER
definitely, it sounds awesome

If you know the movie Crocodile Dundee 2 then you know what I'm talking about.

it does!

jrg
looks awesome in the ubuntu font as well. :P

In reality it also makes an awesome sound.

i'll reboot. if i don't make it, tell my wife and kids i love 'em! :P
5

10:09 PM
lol

says a prayer for @htorque

jrg
yeah, this machines uptime is going to be long (by my standards) now that I've made the jump to precise. :D

@jrg Yes, thanks. That's the CC By-SA 3 license, right?

@jrg I turn my machine off every night before I go to bed...

jrg
@GeorgeEdison Yeah
@TheX It'll get to two or three days probably. :P

10:11 PM

made it! :D

jrg
Can't watch, flash borked itself already. :(

works here :P

I lold at the end.

uptime
17:12:06 up 12 min, 1 user, load average: 0.04, 0.19, 0.25

10:12 PM
just no sound -.-

I like the fact that VC2 sounds like the model number for a microwave oven. so the new name has to be one that can be shortened to something like that. like U1, cp3 or py3k

Well that is the entire point of it. :D
BR2
BullRoarer2

jrg
@GeorgeEdison btw, at the bottom of this page, there is the "view legal code" option.
for all the licenses. :)

Or BRv2 looks even better.

oh, i have no sound because the headphones are still plugged in :D

jrg
10:13 PM
NOICE SMART GUY. :P

why should i deal with such trivial things? :D

jrg
I'm out, it got to firefox's updates. Cya on the other side folks.
I don't know, because they just might not be so trivial? :D

the ACRONYM office in america (a bureau that comes up with acronyms for government things) should be open to the public. they could make some money

@TheX !

Everything is trivial don't ya know?
Holy slap stick it is @RolandTaylor!

10:15 PM
@jrg Now, how to format it in a Debian copyright file...

XD
wassup?

@StefanoPalazzo the US Government doesn't make Acronyms, they make Oxymorons..
<----- doesn't know what a slap stick is btw...

maybe that bureau is an urban legend, I can't find anything about it now

Alrighty. I'm off for tonight. Gotta get some rest for tomorrows UDS sessions.
:P

cya

10:19 PM
bye Octavian

good night all

jrg
10:31 PM
@GeorgeEdison Have fun

10:51 PM
Any packages in the repos. that also use CC BY-SA 3.0?

@GeorgeEdison sure, a quick google search shows me launchpad.net/ubuntu/oneiric/+source/deja-dup/+copyright for example

@ajmitch That uses the abbreviated version of the license.
...is that allowed?
...or more specifically, will Debian accept it?

jrg
Heloooo from the land of precise!
Note that I haven't rebooted yet, so it could still go wrong. :P

hello from the land of pissed off sysadmins

jrg
Heh.

11:05 PM
qualifies for being in the aforementioned group

@jrg Murphy's law: If it can go wrong, it will.

jrg
@GeorgeEdison Ubuntu+1's law: That kernel update didn't break it? Oh, well this little library that nobody uses one will. :D

s/one//

11:21 PM
anyone able to give me a bitcoin? :P

Bounty offered: Can I pass a dpi flag to lightdm to set the proper DPI for X? http://askubuntu.com/questions/72486/can-i-pass-a-dpi-flag-to-lightdm-to-set-the-proper-dpi-for-x #xorg

@TheEvilOne lol...

reverses @RolandTaylor's batteries

...evah I potpal ylno si siht tub ,uoy nioj dluow I grj@ @jrg

@RolandTaylor from what I can tell the current bitcoin exchange rate is about $3.26 :P

11:23 PM
hmm not bad...
considering that you can't use them in the real world!

@RolandTaylor currency exchange ;P

in what bank?
okay folks, I gotta run
prayer meeting in 5 minutes - and it's not at my house!
:O
@Explorer <42

erases @RolandTaylor's power cell

@RolandTaylor: Did you see my blog article?

jrg
@GeorgeEdison love the manpage article.
Means I can write my resume in a manpage format easily. :D

11:32 PM
Lol, I would use TeX for that.

man marcoceppi
That would be awesome

jrg
man majorhayden : majorhayden.com

Yeah well... I'll stick to HTML.

Learned something new, since I can't spell oneiric

jrg
Just call it 11.10?
:P

11:34 PM
lsb_release -cs

jrg
nice
hangon.
sudo apt-get install xclip

@jrg P.S. If it's not too hard (and you're not too busy) could you please give StackApplet a spin? I recently added Pangolin builds.

FYI, for those looking for something to do:

Q: A bunch of incoming Mythbuntu Questions

Marco CeppiOver the next week we'll be importing a large amount of Mythbuntu questions form their FAQ. Due to this import we will have a lot of questions that require cleanup in both formatting and tagging. Also, some of the content was originally written for 9.10 - those running Mythbuntu, or willing to s...

jrg
so, install xclip, then run this: lsb_release -cs | xclip -sel clip
that will automatically copy it to your clipboard
and then, you can be all awesome and alias that to something. :D
@MarcoCeppi what happened to Jorge's answer on that?
I know it was there...
Oh, nevermind. Was added the the question.

Yeah, merged it up

jrg
11:45 PM
:)

So discussion can take place as answers

jrg
First precise bug found.
@GeorgeEdison updating my sources right now, will get back to you about the stackapplet stuff
unity lens update when I went to the precise version.
