i am getting a very strange boot screen on my ubuntu 11.10 machine

the screen is all black and has a few lines of color, but generally black

any idea how i could get the ubuntu logo on?

Q: Writing to /tmp is failing - returning error 22

I'm getting this weird behaviour where writing to /tmp is failing. Even try touch /tmp/foo as root fails with OS error code 22: Invalid argument. The permissions are set to 1777/drwxrwxrwt.

It sure is quiet here. Am I the only one not at UDS?

to be more informative

nautilus sucks without the up button

without the path bar/breadcrumb toggle button

i'm trying to confirm this bug that was submitted:

crash when a note or new reputation is there

The stackapplet (1.4 but also 1.5) crashes as soon as there is any new note or if the reputation value changes. I'm happy to attach more information, but I do not know what is of interest and where logs are.

you know how you get a list of kernels to boot from at startup ... what isthat called?

is that grub?

to configure that list I have to change some kind of grub file right?

@JoshuaRobison that list is autogenerated by Grub upon kernel updates, and you can force it to update as well

but you usually dont edit the grub list - you edit the grub config file and then update grub with the update command

is there a way I can keep that screen from showing up or make it always show up?

I only have a list of like "boot into livecd" or boot into persistant etc..

therefore your BIOS will boot to that before the hard drive

and i've run livecds before

Q: How to update Gnome applications without updating past 2.x?

I am looking to do is update Gnome applications without updating all of gnome to 3.x using the gnome3-team/gnome3 PPA. What i want specifically is to update Gedit, Nautilus, Movie Player etc. past 2.x, (And have them continue updating) but I don't want Gnome 3, per se. I'm not sure if I just nee...
