4:00 PM
at least i have a clear picture why it fails :D maybe jockey should do this check for two VGA devices and show a popup dialog about optimus not being supported very well.
i don't know what's worse: a spartanic bios or one with millions of settings.
haven't yet been able to make the system see the nvidia gpu on the z68 system :-/

It wont work with the current state of drivers, why is jokey marking these as supported, what kind of information does he rely on to recommend a driver package?

EEK - with optimus enabled, the system uses 14 watts more than on integrated only.

man, does @foosfreedom even exist? does he have a life? anyone has ever talked with him??? stackexchange.com/leagues/31/month/askubuntu/2011-10-01/…

(which means: almost half the battery time)

@htorque but but... It gives you power! and 3dunity!
@htorque oh w8, thats not important at all

4:08 PM
i have unity 3d with intel and novueau as well :P
hehehe
ok, i give up on the z68 system for now
too many reboots, too much dvi cable plugging :P

@htorque stop being lazzy! chop chop back to work!

i would - if canonical would pay for it :D

@htorque tssss tssss tssss do it for the love man!
:)

→ reboot (it's getting too warm in here :D)

im making dutch pancakes and eating them with a cappuccino while having this conversation

4:16 PM
i'm drinking a glass of low-fat water. :P
maybe i should get twitter :D

@htorque no,no your not

@htorque "low fat" water is for pussies

Pfft! Optimus must be renamed to OptiBatteryEat

lol
@AmithKK they you not invent a hybrid solution if they didnt need it, at least you know excatly why that thing had to be done, else not laptops would use that crap :)

current gen intel gpus are fast enough for me. i'd only need a dedicated gpu for gaming or cuda.

4:19 PM
Bounty offered: No access to my own external hard drive? http://askubuntu.com/questions/68813/no-access-to-my-own-external-hard-drive #nautilus

the idea behind it isn't that bad, but the implementation sucks.
not only on linux as far as i've heard.
battery savings aren't that amazing.

its pure marketing, just like "low fat" water :P

low-fat voss water. now sugar-free!

we can sell that!
lets hope microsoft or apple dont remember to patent that :P

low-fat water. Now with no asbestosin!

4:26 PM
LOL
"Collected on places where no power plants have dared to be built!"

@htorque excellent, lekenstein has all the info in that optimus question
we just need to link er up.

@JorgeCastro yeah but for that users have to stop being recomended by jokey to install the drivers upon boot, bumblebee will do that for them.
@JorgeCastro maybe a bug report can be issued?

there is one already

then its just wait and keep recommending bumblebee :(

it's wait and recommend people buying thinkpads :P

4:36 PM
@htorque make an open source BIOS for devices!

@brunopereira81 CoreBoot

@Oxwivi dam it! nothing in this world that hasnt been invented yet? :D

@brunopereira81 I dunno - time machines?

@OctavianDamiean hello
@Oxwivi I think those are already here, the government just doesnt want us to know about them yet!

4:40 PM
@brunopereira81 Maybe, what about faster than light travelling?

@OctavianDamiean hello and welcome to ask ubuntu! home of spam, bug reports and duplicate questions! :D

:D
Have a watch for me?

@Oxwivi done that already, tried it yesterday, was fun but my back hurts a bit today

@brunopereira81 How many years younger are you now?

i think if backwards time travel were possible, someone from the future would already have visited us. :P
"YOU MUST DESTROY APPLE, MICROSOFT, GOOGLE, AND FACEBOOK!"

4:44 PM
Er... my flag weight went down?

@htorque Nope, it would change the future, null the invention of the time machine.

Invalid flags.

invalid invalid flags.

It's a chicken and egg problem that I use to explain why time travelling (at least to the past) is not possible.

You mean this really is an answer?

4:45 PM
invalid flags alone only raise the disputed flag count.
without the "Did you try" it's a normal answer. not exactly great, though. probably should have been a comment. everyone has to have declined flags! :D

@GeorgeEdison Isn't the question about U1 on Windows? Recommending removal from the Control Panel is supposed to be valid.

Yeah but an answer shouldn't be a question.

@GeorgeEdison Edit or make it a comment to the question.

@GeorgeEdison yeah, but a flag means deletion - do you think it should be deleted?

A flag does not automatically mean deletion!
If an answer was flagged as Not an answer then a moderator can convert it to a comment.

4:51 PM
so it gets deleted as answer :P

3k in 24 days - nice!

@htorque Well yea but the content is not gone.

@htorque @Oxwivi now now, I cheated a lot by using my time travel machine going at the speed of light :P
how do I use my recently acquired powers of voting something for close?

175 new questions in a day :-O

4:55 PM
no mather, found it

you can try it here

Q: How can I define a function in a C++ class that takes two objects as arguments?

Oscar David ArbeláezI want to create a function in a C++ class or in the files of the class, but I want it to take two objects as arguments, shush like: float function (Object a, Object b){ return float; }; But I don't want to write in the main program: Object a; Object b; float c; ...

;-)

I think my application has too many threads.

@htorque thx, done and done ;)
one question tough, if one flags a question for any case, sometimes you get a reason why your flag was denied, now its not that in most cases I dont agree with it getting denied or anything (most of the times I flagged it cause I miss read or was just to fast jugging) but can the person behind that reply see who flagged the post? Or all is done anonymous and the same as me not knowing who gave me that reply that person just replies to a flag and not the person behind the flagging?

afaik mods can't see who flagged?
unless you leave a comment (like you should) why you flagged the post

Q: What Pro-forma comments do you use?

Octavian DamieanI'd like to gather a list of boilerplate comments for Ask Ubuntu which can be used in combination with the awesome Pro-forma comments browser script. Post suggestions too, you are not required to use the script. Please wrap your comments into a code-block for easier copying.

@htorque Nope - they can.

5:07 PM
omg omg omg

@GeorgeEdison thx, makes sence really. just wondering

Q: toshiba satellite keyboard not working correctly

Carl CordellThe first letter in the lphbet is not working on my keybord. It hs to be obvious bsed on how this looks. I'm lso noticing tht the num lock light flshes with every keystroke of ny letter s I type. I reinstlled n older version of ubuntu n it works gin so it is the 11.10 relese of Ubuntu. How ...

what is this?

probably an issue with the cable connecting the keyboard. had something similar once.

@htorque he is saying that 11.04 works great, so downgrade works and 11.10 not :P
this is impossible

Fixed the question. :D

I marked as a joke, be gentle!

5:11 PM
However the answer there is actually not a real answer.
It is a It works for me comment.

err, what? :D
blind, he is. questions better read, he must.

i'm a few flags short of the marshal badge - i'll only flag clear cases :D

Flagged it already and commented on it. :)

@htorque he complains about the letter 'a' but then misses more spelling further down! I still think the guy is joking, "11.04" works "11.10" not? And + he doesnt have another pc to create the question? its a joke :( there will be no solution for this and wont provide any help to any more users

5:17 PM
Why?
Also what does that mean?
> misses more spelling further down.

i agree, this is not going to help anyone else and maybe won't see an answer, but: does it hurt anyone? :-)
we have a lot more messy questions i think :-)

cause you wont find the source of it, if its a hardware issue (cola or "low fat" water spilled on the kb) its too localized, he blames software for something that cannot be software related, a kb doesnt simply have some keys dead by using other software!
@OctavianDamiean he complains about 'a' but there are more letters missing on his original question

oh, i can make that happen.

Well if it happens to be a real problem introduced by a recent update then it might not be a question at best but it definitely doesn't hurt anyone.

i'll write you a keyboard map that will disable 'a' 'b' and 'c'. :-)
which brings me back to my little side project

5:20 PM
@htorque @OctavianDamiean agree, doesnt hurt

Q: How do I change the keymap of a single device (Logitech presenter)?

htorqueMy Logitech R400 presenter sends the following key codes: keycode 112 (keysym 0xff55, Prior) [page up] keycode 117 (keysym 0xff56, Next) [page down] keycode 60 (keysym 0x2e, period) keycode 71 (keysym 0xffc2, F5) keycode 9 (keysym 0xff1b, Escape) Basically, I want to use this pres...

Uhh

> I re-installed an older version of Ubuntu and it works again so it is the 11.10 release of Ubuntu.

im now with a SLOW lxde session

Did you read that?
Also there were no other characters missing. It was really only the a character.

5:22 PM
@OctavianDamiean do you believe the keymaping has changed from 11.04 to 11.10?

@OctavianDamiean if it's a bad contact, this could as well be coincidence.

I agree that it could be coincidence but it is well weird.
Weird enough to not be too quick on the close or flag button.
The only character besides a that he has missed was the d character and that only once. That can be coincidence.

@OctavianDamiean saw that ;) maybe it is just a coincidence, doesnt mater im not that important to be giving opinions anyway :P
off, see u all later

cya

FUUUU

5:30 PM
No.

Noo,

Q: "No Parking" sign in the middle of the screen

NicolasI've just installed Ubuntu 11.10, and an annoying No Parking sign doesn't stop to appear and disappear in the middle of the screen all the time, totally randomly! It was on the live-CD during the installation, too. What does it mean? How can I disable it?

hilarious title! :D

Made me laugh a bit.

LOL
Seriously, what is that

@Explorer sorry about this morning :P you know how it is :D
I'm gonna be reallllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllly busy today btw

5:44 PM
This FOSS Driver is !@$!#
Weird: Disabling the driver still keeps the NVIDIA X server settings

Q: Nautilus losing theme

DennisI'm new to Ubuntu, I install it yesterday and I'm loving the system. But there is a problem with Nautilus and I have no idea on how to fix this. Nautilus randonly loses his Ambiance theme, becoming all gray with a strange look, the icons also disappear too. I take a screenshot take a look: D...

anyone knows the bug report for this?

No.

dammit!
can't find it
I started Nautilus. Browsing through files and folders appears to be working. However, the appearance, i.e. buttons and layouts has virtually no colours. I uploaded a screen shot of nautilus in order to illustrate the bug. bug that's a dupe i think

It was a timing issue.

5:49 PM
well, i'll link to this

As far as I can remember.

no, that's a new bug
no gnome-settings-daemon thing

BBT

6:26 PM
@GeorgeEdison are you around?

I've made a page with both our search engines side by side :)

Cool.

No idea why, but it's interesting. let me put it online

I've been making some tweaks to mine the last few days.

6:33 PM
@GeorgeEdison ause.plzz.de

Cool.
Which is which?

the right one is yours

Ah, thanks.
One of them is returning data for an empty request.
I've been doing some more thinking about all of this...

that's weird. it's getting "/q2?query=%3Cbr%3E" (q2 means your search engine)

...did we mention something about having a /status or /info route?
Something that gets pinged for status information?

6:39 PM
sure
I still think a random choice will work file, but that we should block servers if they fail to serve a request on time

Because I was thinking that then we could have a Python / PHP script that checks that route on both servers every 2 minutes or something and stops returning that server in the /servers route if one is failing.
This calls for a diagram!

where's that /servers route running?

@GeorgeEdison GIMP or Inkscape?

Not sure. Maybe Marco can help us with that... since he has the domain.
@Oxwivi Google Docs :)

I mean, it'll be a single point of failure right?

:D
I'm already getting it (:
this works really well

So in the first, step - the client determines the list of servers available.
Then using that list, the client picks one of the servers in the list to use each time.

excellent idea

@GeorgeEdison Marco's server doubles as load balancer?

Not really.

6:50 PM
we don't actually need them as a fallback, the official API does that
still, remember that it's kind of tricky getting servers, since the user might not be connected to the internet at any point (and it makes sense to keep that assumption)

I've been working on that!
The last 3 days or so I've been fixing up the data server so that it can be run locally.
I'm making quite a bit of progress.

that's awesome
did you do some tests about bandwidth and cpu usage?

Not yet.
I need to finish the adjustments I'm making to the server.
There were some "threading issues" that needed fixing.

right :)

Once I'm done, the server will be able to load either the pre-generated index or the XML from the data dump directly.

6:56 PM
yikes I've got to go
talk to you later

@StefanoPalazzo See you later.

Q: Fedora, CentOS, Ubuntu Linux all are open source linux, but what about when i want to make my own brand from that?

goOgleI have used Fedora/Ubuntu/CentOS all of them, and they are open source linux, free to all users and free to do almost anything. But i do not get this correctly yet. They are open source, and they are free to use, but what happen if i copy there version and make my own brand linux called "Zyx.",...

Q: USB drive (with 128Mb memory and CDROM drive ?) how to write

Martin MoermanI have an USB stick, which comes forward if I plug it into my machine as part soundcard and part CDrom drive. As the CDrom drive part includes very old drivers I want to update them. Is it possible to mount this part as write, so I can put new drivers on it ? Any ideas welcome. Martin

wut?

he's the lurking king :P

A: How do I change the keymap of a single device (Logitech presenter)?

Florian DieschI never did that but I think you need to create a keymap file in /lib/udev/keymaps/ and add a rule for your device to /lib/udev/rules.d/95-keymap.rules Details: An udev keymap maps scan codes to key codes, so you need to find both to create the keymap file. To find the scan codes run the fol...

please upvote!
i think about awarding this guy a bounty :P

8:23 PM
i wonder if that is possible in windows.

wow! What a nice answer.

idd, one of those 'wow' moments

@brunopereira81 Don't worry - it's impossible (what he's asking).

@GeorgeEdison still he gets a big + for the answer, even if its not possible to implement! :D

@OctavianDamiean sure, it was written by me :D

8:30 PM
:D

but i couldn't have done it without the hint
at least not that fast :-)

Figured that after taking a look at the history of that answer. :D

udev stuff will stay voodoo to me, though. :D

Not sure what to do with two suggested edits in the queue.

Improve em. :D

8:34 PM
the first one should be an answer?
the google translation is just awful :D

can I even see them or thats a moderator thing?

i'm not sure how much rep you need for that
bit it's no moderator thing - i'm no moderator :P
@brunopereira81 can you open that? askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits

no mater, its sexy movie night, wer watching a classic.
@htorque no :( feeling un important
bb

@htorque It is a moderator tools thingy though. You get that only if you are above 10k.

crazy!

8:49 PM
In my opinion they should allow users with 2000 reputation to see that list already but ... well they don't always do what I think would be good.

nobody's perfect

The reason is because they want to keep the users interested in gaining reputation to get to 10k.

and how do they keep 10k+ rep users happy? :)
i want new crazy badges. :D

With the 15k privileges.

naaah, there are no good privileges after 10k
protect questions
well...
trusted users
useless
20k → ability to kick users in chat :D

8:57 PM
:D

30k → free ubuntu mug :-)

Heck yea.

i'd love to have one, but shippppppping costs

50k → UDS sponsorship

and a cold beer :D

8:59 PM
There is enough cold beer at the UDS.

i think if you work instead of writing answers for 50k, you'll earn more than enough money to not need sponsorship :P
yeah, i figured that out. IRC is full of "i owe you a beer at UDS"
this must be a huge hangover fest :D

@RolandTaylor i realized

9:48 PM
@htorque actually, since the new bounty thing I've been giving away all my rep
because it's just too much fun

yeah, but aren't 30 bounties too much? maybe a limit would be better.

it seems it depends on the scale of the site
SO has 280 bounties right now
plus the "reward this answer" bounty only needs like a day to give it away

if SO would jump off a cliff... :P

10:10 PM
@JorgeCastro you're in edit mood, right? ;)

yep
but I am going out in 20 minutes
so it's all yours. :)

i'm going to bed in 20 minutes. :P

good night all
oh, there's a new marshal in town. ;-)

Anyone know if Unity will get folding back in 12.04?
I mean when there are too many applications, and you need to select one lower down on the launcher. I prefer if it folds instead of scrolling (by default).

11:23 PM
It works!
The Data Dump conversion utility can now sync with the API while converting the XML to the indexed format.
...so you end up with a complete up to date index file that you can use right away.

11:34 PM
hey guys
do you want to get questions about Steam and Playonlinux?
I kinda doubt it but...
I mean, people have marked Steam as 'gold' but it's refusing to launch right now for me

You're running it on Ubuntu with Wine, I assume?

Yes
Hm, the WineHQ appdb version is .30, I have .28 on the package repos
Let's see...
nope, same error :/

Are you launching it from the console?

console or playforlinux, it's the same
"Fatal Error: VGui_Setup failed"
The only thing I can think of right now is a hiccup somewhere in Nouveau.
Although... gah... I really dislike the proprietary nvidia stuff
Not just that, but I'm not sure I can come back to it afterwards, since Nouveau is not listed anymore in the additional drivers window
blech
sigh, let's do it.
Not sure why GNOME 3 doesn't like the idea of shutting down a computer in one click
