@badp you can remove your nvidia drivers
2
A: When launching, nvidia-settings it just hangs

brunopereira81Try to completely remove your nvidia drivers from your system: sudo apt-get purge nvidia* Remove your xorg.conf sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf Reinstall xorg completely sudo apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg-core libgl1-mesa-glx:i386 libgl1-mesa-dri:i386 libgl1-mesa-glx:amd64 libgl1-mes...

Turns out that sadly it was Nouveau

Steam launches and works with the proprietary drivers
it's very slow
but it launches

yeah, have same issue :S
click > w8 > w8 > w8 > something happens

Well, TF2 is almost done downloading
Let's see how spectacularly badly the setup fails now.

12:29 AM
that's playable ;)

and compiz, or mutter, or whatever, crashed :|

You really need to turn compiz off to be able to run anything tru steam!
use unity2d for games, you dont want special effects at all for that to work

gaming on Linux sucks...

it does
the games suck, and most of the gamers act like spoiled children
just played urban terror and got mad so I had to stop
even the admins act like children

12:46 AM
all gamers are, never meet more then a hand full that were / are good ppl. Played wow (i known cliche) for 5 years, liked around 10 ppl I meet online. still have contact with them, most of the rest were absolutely not the type of person you can get with.
saw a image image online that resumed all, comment on it was: dick head + total anonymity + large audience = retard that never shuts up and makes ppl hate them selfs for even knowing him.

1:04 AM
lol

if i vote for close can I also flag it to get flag points?

1:24 AM
@brunopereira81 You can... but it's not necessary.
Flagging is intended for spam, offensive content, and things that need moderator attention.

but im still 80 short to get my badge :(

I've been searching for a way to flatten the unity panel, can't seem to find a single hint of it

Flatten?

7:37 AM
Are you on 11.10? If so, activate the dash (assuming your on Unity 3D)
The panel flattens with transparency, I'm trying to make that effect permanent

Not on Oneiric, unfortunately.

I know this is possible, the login screen has this effect.

Ah, that.

The top bar is translucent, instead of transparent
Like, you can still see the bottom border outline and a drop shadow

If it's possible, it will be only through CCSM, compizconfig-settings-manager.

7:41 AM
So far I can only edit the transparency in ccsm

@Brian the changes you want are too complex to change easily. Best bet is to try a completely different theme. Sites like OMG! Ubuntu! and Web Upd8 cover this regularly, and Deviantart has many themes, with an active community. You might even try Gnome 3, there are different themes for that, too. You have to experiment quite a bit.

Why can't you manually edit the themes anymore in 11.10?

A: How to setup DNS Server on Local network

Giovanni ToraldoTake a look at dnsmasq instead, is pretty far more easy to configure than bind: you just need to install it, and it will use DNS defined in /etc/resolv.conf as upstream server, and in /etc/hosts you can define the 2 records you need. Remember to reload it on every change.

Acess to login was restricted for user2 by defining restrictions from pam_time in /etc/time.conf (user1 was granted full access) *;*;user1;Al0000-2400 *;*;user2;Wk0000-2400 # user2 has no access on weekends Pam_time was added to /etc/pam.d/lightdm by the line account required pam_time.so We expect login for user2 to be restricted but login for user1 is still granted. Instead we observe the following: * login as user2 fails with wrong password error. * repeated login as user2 or user1 - no errors but login fails. * switching to user1 (or another user) in the greeter: no field to give in a password is displayed. * Shut down from menu on panel becomes unresponsive Thus after a rejected login due to restrictions from pam_time we cannot resume working on this machine without a forced reboot (via tty or magic SysRq). @jrg Nope.

great timing, one of the engines seems to have failed

jrg
@StefanoPalazzo yeah, I was about to say.

5:01 PM
@StefanoPalazzo hahah engine 2 doesn't show anything! :P

jrg
@Oxwivi I'd explain more, but I've gotta go. If I get the chance I'll show you.

@jrg What's the normal priority level for debconf?
Okay, thanks.

jrg
No idea about that one, sorry.

okay, works now

Okay, anyone know about configuring debconf here?
Nevermind.

5:02 PM
@StefanoPalazzo what are the light black links?

they are unanswered questions

aha...

you can make a case for excluding them entirely, but some people might use the lens to find questions they can answer

@StefanoPalazzo aha, I wont I just want to find questions that have working answers!
what is the unity lens?

Q: How do I install the Ask Ubuntu Unity Lens, and how do I use it?

jrgI heard about the Ask Ubuntu Unity Lens over in the chat, and I was wondering how to install it in 11.04. What are the step-by-step instructions to get it installed, activated and once that's done, how do I use it?

@StefanoPalazzo installing it, will give unity a second second chance...

5:28 PM
g'day!

hi htorque :)

5:53 PM
hello all

hi

Does anyone here know how to flatten the unity panel?

hi all

@BrianGraham sorry, thought it's a .png in /usr/share/unity/4/, but it seems to be hardcoded, so unless you recompile unity, you can't.

6:19 PM
@BrianGraham ah, wait, i might be wrong. it's maybe possible to do via the GTK theme.
@BrianGraham yes, it's in /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-3.0/apps/unity.css

@htorque do you know how I could modify the existing theme to use that css?
What's the name of the png I want to use in the unity.css, and where in the unity.css file?

@StefanoPalazzo I think i broke your thing
it stopped working

I'm just investigating

that would sound suspicious in many parts of the world...

it looks like I broke George's server :-(

6:34 PM
up until it broke, B's results were significantly better
like, by alot

@BrianGraham what do you mean, where is the file? it's there: /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-3.0/apps/unity.css
i'm not familiar with the unico engine, though
if you want to make it flat, just use the same color twice for the gradient
so use
background-image: -gtk-gradient (linear, left top, left bottom, from (#141718), to (#141718));

I've got this weird bug again where it doesn't work unless I'm logged into the server via ssh :-(
anyway, I seem to have brought down @george's server. blast.

isn't that a windows server

I think so
yeah. my server crashed with too many open threads from keystrokes waiting on the search engine
I should've talked to George before posting (:

jrg
7:04 PM
You killed George's awesome ask ubuntu search engine!
@htorque I think it's actually a 10.04 VM now.

eh
the lens works for me in 11.04 still
the old working version is still in the PPA

I completed installing from Ubuntu Core and installed quite a few packages from chroot. Let's hope it works right.

@StefanoPalazzo ^^^

@JorgeCastro Stefano Palazzo told me it would only work in 11.04 and the package couldn't be located when I tried to download it...

7:27 PM
I'm glad to hear that, what's wrong with the package then?

did you add the ppa?

@JorgeCastro yeah :P
I'll try it again...
@JorgeCastro it worked now, thanks

did you do an update after you added the PPA?

My server is back up now.
Actually... it didn't really go down... it was still "running".
But apparently some of the threads were leaking and not getting freed properly.
Anyway - it's back up for the moment while I finish rewriting it.

LOL I got the "you are only allowed to add a comment every 5 seconds" when I removed a comment xD

@StefanoPalazzo: It's okay - it wasn't your fault.

jrg

ubuntu was just a classic login

@jrg 11.04

jrg
Hm, interesting. If you install Unity 2D, then it should work...

@jrg package name?

jrg
unity-2d-default-settings or something like that.

yeah that's a package

jrg
7:55 PM
that should do it.

hopefully
I did the unity --replace
after installing stefanos packge
and then my whole desktop crashed
and I got a million warnings in the terminal...
@jrg I chose unity 2d now... reeboot! wish me luck! ;)

unity --replace will flicker like mad during the start and write a lot of stuff in the terminal. that's normal.
most times it's best to just log out and back in again (helps against any weird stacking issues).

jrg
Agreed with @htorque.

didn't work...
@htorque unity doesn't work
it wont even start
I have a classic desktop now

jrg
I have no idea.

@Alvar Yeah, I don't really think it's necessary.
I mean... I don't even have AV software on Windows right now :P

@GeorgeEdison are there any recorded viruses for LINUX?

8:05 PM
(Well, except for Windows Defender.)

if not kill the qestion

@Alvar Er, you mean Linux.
Ubuntu is just a Linux distro.

@GeorgeEdison yea yea
@GeorgeEdison true

I'm pretty sure there have been.

@GeorgeEdison really?

8:06 PM
None have been a real threat since they need root access to do real harm.

@GeorgeEdison haha

jrg
All the viri I've seen have been related to things like apache exploits, or that known X.org vulnerability.

but is there any

...but erasing everything in your home folder isn't my idea of fun either.

@GeorgeEdison don't you need a password to do that?

8:07 PM
(Especially if Ubuntu One syncs after that.)

jrg
@Alvar nope.

@Alvar No.
By definition, you have access to all files you own.

okej yeah that's true

Only know of one "virus" for linux, a java applet that did crap on your system, to "catch" it you had to click on it and actually give root permissions to let it do its dirty job

(Or if file permissions are set appropriately, you have access to files owned by others in your group - I'm sure they'll love you if the files go missing!)

Q: What is the best AntiVirus application available for non-technical Ubuntu Users?

Lewis GoddardI am looking for an AntiVirus for Ubuntu, and have researched potential products. I do not want a paid product, but i do want a user friendly interface. I do not want rants about how unnecessary it is on Ubuntu. My considerations are: avast! Linux Home Edition (Free with Registration, 27.7MB)...

@Alvar done

thanks

@Alvar why u down vote anti virus for linux!

@brunopereira81 it's unnecessary!
there are bigger risks
like your computer exploding or getting hacked.

duuuude, they changed the recovery menu. it's now a two step process: if you want to write anything to the file systems, you need to first select:
remount Remount / read/write and mount all other file systems

8:20 PM
yeah, developers and patches!

jrg
Yeah, i was about to say you're in greater danger from developers and their "undocumented features" than you are from virii.

i wonder what the point of this is. wouldn't it make more sense to make a dedicated "give me a read-only system" point make more sense?

@jrg I know...

@Alvar im just jcking with you ofc. @jrg hell yeah

@brunopereira81 hehe :P
I kind of got a hint of it with that pic, it's funny :P

@brunopereira81 for some reason I thought of an italian with that expression, strange very strange....
