I posted a question on SO and someone suggested I move it here because it's pretty broad. https://gamedev.stackexchange.com/questions/194332/why-do-large-creatures-in-some-games-seem-like-they-have-no-mass-when-rotating

I think the tl;dr of the question is this: In some games you'll be fighting a large creature / boss and the creature will seemingly rotate on X axis to aim or adjust itself to some new heading and it will do so without any "mass". I know there's no real mass. I'm just wondering what the difference here is versus a space sim with a ship. Is it just much easier to cap ro
If you are using an ECS the system that describes monster movement can look different then one that describes player movement. You can optionally apply physics sim to either system, it's the entity that describes which systems to run. Rotational movement like you've described can be handled with or without physics.

If you want to limit the rotation speed then you just do that. I don't understand the problem. It's not difficult.

@DanKanze this is not unique to ECS

thats true

@squarism Are you asking with respect to a problem you are trying to solve in your own project or are you just soliciting opinions about games that have already been developed by others?

@Pikalek It's not a problem I'm having, I'm not working on a project right now. Yes, I suppose it's about games others have made. I'm curious about what technologies make things appear to have mass. Shadows of the Colossus where the main focus is about giants, the creatures have mass and weight. I don't have a clip but I wonder if there are bugs or wonkiness.
I watched a 4hr UE5 deep dive about IK. It's a hard subject for me to google. I think it's like a moment of clarity like "hmm. Ships are easy I guess. They can resist movement. The problem of making them seem like they have mass is easy?" And then thinking about all the creature jank I've seen. And then wondering what state of the art is or the future is.
