Hello! What is the best option when you have code you dont understand(OpenGL and GLFU) among the code you need?

6:49 AM
try to understand it?

3 hours later…
9:50 AM
@Vaillancourt 14 days if it's a used chat room: chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/28/minecraft-talk

10:24 AM
I'm definitely overcomplicating things. I caught myself thinking about how to implement setting multiple targets for weapons despite my game doesn't have any. It's not normal.

@0x00004 The best advice I would give is, you'd need to learn the basics of OpenGL and GLFU, to understand that code. Chances are, the code you need works in a specific way with OpenGL, so that it would be hard to understand without understanding how OpenGL works
@trollingchar Did you implement the system already? :P

That's good, so not much time spent there

the WormSprite class shouldn't be stateless
I have a feeling that I'm doing everything wrong, but haven't realized it yet.

Sounds like every other Monday

4 hours later…
2:12 PM
Forgot to add Wait() call to missiles' behavior (it tells the clock to not trigger state change for a while), and my missiles stop all at once, then fall vertically.

You could change that to "Deactivate Missiles" weapon

Call a bug a feature, and it becomes it.
In my first game, UFO, there was a bug allowing the player to hit multiple UFOs with one shot. I made it a feature.
Also after its release people were replacing pictures of UFOs with NSFW crap drawn in MS Paint

Space Invaders had a similar thing. The speeding up of the game as you got further into it happened because... Well, the processor didn't have as much to do. Unintended bug made it faster, they liked it and kept it

>Unintended bug
sounds like bugs can be intended

Hmms true :p

2:23 PM
they always unexpected, and that's good, because they can give you ideas you didn't think of
or at least entertain you

@trollingchar I've met that kind of person before
That makes bugs intentionally, but in their head they are features, but ultimately it makes the software behave in an unstable way

I always try to understand how a bug works, to not make too many bugs later

I currently have a bug on my game, when reading images, that so far has only happened on 1 windows machine, and I'm still not sure why
all images read appear to be more red than they should, not sure if I mix the RGB values in some way

how are colors transformed? I guess something uses alpha instead of red so it's always 1

user92578
Do the read colors actually end up with invalid data or could the monitor just be calibrated wrong?

2:34 PM
There's no alpha in this case, its using 24-bit bmp files, so it only has RGB channels, with 8-bit each
Pretty confident its not the monitor, as everything else is shown properly, I believe something is going wrong during the parsing moment, but it's hard to tell because it works as expected on a windows laptop I got at home
At some point I thought maybe it has something to do with endianess, but both machines are little endian

8 bit channels are not affected by endianness because they're 8 bit

That's a good point

maybe something's wrong with BMP to internal format conversion

That's where I'm at, the problem is the machine that had this bug is a work machine, so I can't really use it for that project
So I can't debug easily
Mmm I'm not sure why, but I just noticed I starred a comment talking about "choosing a platform" .. how long has that been there?

don't know
no longer than 18 hours obviously

2:44 PM
:P
@trollingchar How did you make decisions of what your UI would look like?

Was changing it randomly until it looked good

That's exactly where I'm at now, but what if someone doesn't have enough time to do that? any advice? :P

what is your game's setting?

Mmm, you could say the story is in a medieval-like setting

Wooden panels and buttons, some also use crystal-like buttons, and add more shields, flags and ribbons
And you can always look how others do it!

2:59 PM
I like the idea
Mmm

if some text needs to be displayed mid-screen, without a panel, place it on a ribbon, similar to old pictures

The gameplay itself doesn't really focus on the setting, but I like the idea of the UI hinting it this way

user92578
I feel like if you don't have time to tweak the UI a lot, going with a very simplistic style is a good idea, as it's easy to keep consistent

That was my initial plan, but I'm trying to learn how to do the right combination of colours/shapes

user92578
My previous game's defining style was two transparent grey boxes overlapped to create a border, and then drawing text with a text shadow

3:05 PM
consistency is important

@Tyyppi_77 Do you have any screenshots to share? (if your project is public / you are ok with that)

@TomTsagk Usually you want buttons more saturated than background

Should the buttons be different colours from each other based on their shape? Or should they be all the same colour for consistency, but only able to tell them apart from their shape?

user92578
Hmm damn none of my Steam or website screenshots really display UI as that's so boring, I'll try to find some

I'd make them of the same color
but it depends

user92578
3:08 PM

user92578
Perhaps not the best example, but displays the consistent idea: background box & foreground element with a shadow

@Tyyppi_77 I think background is too saturated here

@Tyyppi_77 I like the idea

but everything else seems ok

user92578
The game's website is made to look very similar which is very easy to do since it's just transparent boxes & text shadow

3:10 PM
My UI is transparent panels and outlined text too

I've done 2D UI before, and tried different techniques, so it feels like I have a good idea what works and what doesn't (roughly at least), but this project is 3D and it feels like its not the same

3:23 PM
@Elva This is all very odd.
And hello all ;)

Hello!

3:45 PM
I'm not looking forward to be old and have to scrape off freezing rain off my car windows...
I'm not looking forward to be old and have to scrape off freezing rain off my car windows...

Get indoor parking
:D

user92578
Getting back to a school project course after holidays, enjoying some nice npm & git issues... sometimes automatic package management is nice and sometimes its a big pain

:D

user92578
Also the fact that we have noobs with git that manage to apply changes in the wrong places and I need to do a bunch of awkward merges & rebases to get things working correctly

It feels like everyone is a "noob" with git :P

3:52 PM
@Almo Ha! Someday!

user92578
Some definitely more than others...

I'd buy a condo in the city. There is a different opinion about this at home so it's probably not going to happen :P

Been using it for years, made plenty of projects with it, still feel like there's plenty to learn from it

@Tyyppi_77 Yeah; we lost some work done once because of that kind of issues... annoying.
@TomTsagk Working alone with it?

@Vaillancourt Both alone on personal projects, and at work with a team

3:55 PM
@TomTsagk Ok; weird issues tend to rise when working with some other people :P

That is really true :P

Hello!

how are you?

@Vaillancourt i recommend in city with indoor parking

3:58 PM
@Almo Yeah :) If you had an indoor "park" too, that would convince some people I know hehe
@ThePuzzlerThree Tired, thanks, what about you?

@Vaillancourt also tired......my new game isn't working either :(

@ThePuzzlerThree Making games is hard :/

@Vaillancourt need a different idea-the game is not glitchy, but just isn't really fun

hahaha

@Vaillancourt maybe i should make a word game

4:01 PM
@ThePuzzlerThree Are those fun?

@Vaillancourt depends
@Vaillancourt platformer, maybe?

Q: How to build only specified assets into assetbundle in unity

Poppie360I have searched through the few results pertaining to this particular question, but haven't found any results that work. A simple rundown of what i am looking for is to be able to make a single asset bundle of specified assets in order to be able to make an automated process for what the mod syst...

@ThePuzzlerThree Who knows! Some companies make tons of not that good games before getting to the right one and shine :)

do you have a way to delete a line in the python console with a line of code?

user92578
\r is a common escape sequence to replace the last line

4:05 PM
in python?
is it manual or..........
say i wanted one line to load like this
.
...
the dots
can i have it delete the line in the console to rewrite it?

user92578
yup, with the escape sequence

manual?

user92578
what?

do i have to type it when i run the program
or can i put it in the shell and have it run every time

user92578
you include it in the print statement

4:08 PM
oh

3 hours later…
7:15 PM
@Tyyppi_77 The good news about this is... well there are none. Can't write on your C.V. "I fix my teammates issues with git", and your professor will not give you a better grade for that.

hahah

user92578
The whole course feels like a practical joke... like why spend 11 hours a week for two semesters learning first hand why no one uses Scrum anymore?

:D

user92578
My professor will also give me the same exact grade as the git fools anyways, that's the way we get graded... man I do not understand group projects

@Tyyppi_77 Yep... we had a guy that did nothing. He passed because he had the same grade as us.

user92578
7:19 PM
Maybe fools is a too strong word as I've had trouble solving the issues too... definitely hard stuff

There is a difference between not knowing how to fix an issue, and not even knowing one messed up.
(And I'm not sure what is worse between knowing that you messed up, ignoring it and not telling anyone, and not knowing that you messed up...)

:D

7:37 PM
Looks like I need to add some kind of AI... or robot...

8:35 PM
You know when you want to go home after a day's work, but your task is this close to be completed...?

:D
if anyone wants to see me get trashed by the DbD community, right here.

pew pew pew!

user92578
man gamers are the worst

8:50 PM
Bikeshedding :)

9:00 PM
I think it's the internet, though. A news site I used to visit stopped allowing comments at some point.

the whole design team is behind me on this one, so nobody's coming around saying "why you pissin off our players".

Yeah, I guess so; people will be mad whatever you do...

pretty much
This perk I changed was used in 80% of all games by Killers of our top four ranks (on a 20-rank system).
so naturally there would be a lot of blowback.

Yep!
I remember when Microsoft decided to remove Clippy.

9:16 PM
haha :D
