12:52 AM
:( I just can't get audio to work right in CamStudio

I finally just paid for FRAPS

@tylerrrr07 You PAID for software. :| Whoa...

Yeah... I have this tendency to do that sometimes

Crazy world...

1:01 AM
Between Open Source and Microsoft giving me stuff for free... FRAPS is probably one of the few things I have paid for.

2 hours later…
2:39 AM
I just got a maybe from a possible coop.

congrats!

maybe! also coop? as in, someone to help you with your game?

coops are like internships
except full time / paid

I think a coop is like, a superinternship

well

2:43 AM
either that or something you keep chickens in

maybe not full time

This will be fulltime, with 6 periods of school, and paid.
And afterwards I'll have an actual education in software development, rather than just claiming I can do it. :P

ah ok, that was my other guess.
congrats! hopefully it becomes a yes

I hope so. They're looking into getting approved.

3:32 AM
Are coops usually a hard thing to get/find in the US?
Here in Denmark, it's the law, you can't have unpaid internships.

here in the US, companies love unpaid/underpaid internships....

Yeah, I bet they do.
We have very nice employment laws in Denmark. Lots of rights and stuff.

hmm
what about hours?
are there limitations on crunch time too?

4:19 AM
Yeah, no more than 37 hours a week.
Can be a bit annoying though, they can't even offer you overtime.

In the US we get a minimum of 40! XD
To be considered full time anyway

4:39 AM
There's some talk about increasing it to 38. :P
Of course my current job I'm on call around 56 hours a week. It's only the interns that can't work more.

brb moving to Denmark

4:55 AM
Yeah, Denmark is a nice place. Just gotta live with the minimum 38% state tax and 8% misc tax.
If you make a lot of money, you're up to a ~50% state tax and 8% misc tax. :P
Oh, and everything, and I mean everything sold, has a 25% tax on it.
Except of course for cars, which have a whopping 205% tax on it.
Lovely eh?
180% import tax, 25% everything tax.
The taxi I'm driving, a Volvo V70 D3, costs around $130.000 new here.

brb moving back

That's what I thought. :P

4 hours later…
9:03 AM
hello

4 hours later…
12:53 PM
i'd still move to denmark :P

1:18 PM
How would you recomend to develop the football player in simple football manager game?

the skills of players are mental, physical and technical, every in range from 20-50.
from 16y to 21y - developing a little bit more physical skill
from 20y to 24y - more technical skill
from 24y to 30 - more mental
from 28y overall decrease of development
after 30y development stops, the physical and technical skill can decrease

player can gain 0-4 points overall in development

now what i dont know is how to do this. Two ways that I thought about:
oh i forgot to say hello and please help :)

1:31 PM
which would you rather have in your game?

@thedaian the second looks simpler as I dont need to calculate the chance after every game and dont need to look on the previous development
but i get from it feeling that it is not as flexible as the first one
as the devpoints will be decided once

true.
it's really up to you, though. do whatever you think is better, and whatever one you would rather have.

1:47 PM
yes maybe i will implement both and see the tests how will look the performance like and the developing...
thanks :)

2:05 PM
Ah... the old "Try it out and see what works better technique"
Pretty much what everyone should do when it comes to game play elements

1 hour later…
3:11 PM
Nice. 150 fps increase using instance draw calls to batch render all my UI quads.

3:22 PM
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3:54 PM
when it comes to certain gameplay elements and/or design, the only solution is usually to try it, see if it works, and if not, try something else
obviously, it's harder to do in the industry where you have deadlines and such happening

4:49 PM
@thedaian if I were in Ohio, I might consider moving to Denmark too :P

Q: How to move the sprite(vehicles ) on slope image in chipmunk Spacemanager

Anil guptaI have used one polygon shape image (terrain)in my game its just like mountain and now i want to move the tanker on mountain path from one direction to other and then its turn on touching of the screne and move back and move like this continuously, i am not getting the method to move the tanker o...

5:14 PM
So not related to game development...

Q: How can I get the definition a list was created from?

Stuart PeggI have many lists, some of which were created using a now-obsolete list definition. I need a programmatic way of finding out which lists were created using that old definition. Currently my workaround is to check the ServerTemplate attribute in the list's PropertiesXml: list.PropertiesXml.Conta...

I'm kind of annoyed with this guy for down voting everyone for trying to help when the real problem is he isn't at all clear about what his real question is.

meh
downvote him and forget about it

Why didn't I think of that... I'm sitting here "What should I do?"
That's the answer I needed.

I think at some point I used to care about those guys
but the years have taken their toll and my old bones ache

those people are annoying
but yeah, downvote him and move on
possibly add a snarky comment like "well, i know the solution, but you seem to be downvoting everyone, so bye!"

I especially liked a comment on one of the answers that had a lot of back and forth "I can only admire your determination (and thanks) but I'm not sure you can help me in this instance." with the very next comment being "I may have misread your question above..."

5:19 PM
is that actually the sharepoint logo?
I like the logo on that site

I think SharePoint is just the Office Logo since its an Office Server Product
Google shows two possible options...
I never paid attention before :)
Ooooo! Badge for down voting that guy! lol

good comment. haha

What's worse was that his question had +2

probably from the two people who answered :(
also i don't think it's a bad question, but he's almost certainly asking the wrong question, hence the "wrong" answers.

Exactly.

5:33 PM
anyway, gamedev/gaming talk: Sexual harassment in Capcom's fighting game reality show: penny-arcade.com/report/editorial-article/…

remember kids, sexual harassment is bad. somehow thinking that it's vital to the community means that you are bad.

“The beauty of the fighting game community, and you should know this - it’s based around not being welcome. That’s the beauty of it. That’s the key essence of it. When you walk into an arcade for the first time, nobody likes you.”
I hate the Dota, Hon, etc. communities (though I love playing that style of game)
But that statement alone makes me not want to participate in a fighting game community, ever

I am bad at fighting games, so never really care for them in the first place.

at least in HoN / Dota I only get yelled at if I am failing hard (which happens a little too often lol... ) or if I'm doing really good (then the opposite team chimes in)
I have this weird tendency to like competitive games that I'm really bad at.

5:38 PM
(also i'm not a fan of most game's communities, but that's more because there's too many idiots in a lot of them.... :( )

Single player games tend to bore me. I need to be getting my ass kicked in multiplayer.

haha. fair enough

I remember when I first started playing Dota and someone was yelling at me I told him "I'm really not offended by an angry 12 year old."
his comeback...
"I'm 13!!!"

ah, kids.

Yeah... Now when people yell at me and call me noob, and obscene varations of noob. I just say "Yup! :D"
/ignorechat is a pretty awesome tool too. I try to avoid it for those who are actually communicating and not expecting mind readers though.

5:42 PM
@tylerrrr07 I guess we have to play once in while with each other

So my keyboard was sorta dying, so I decided to unscrew all 40 screws, clean it, then try to put it back together, and now it doesn't work, :(

On the other hand, typing with the keyboard in your mind is a lot cooler.

yeah... no it isn't
and the on-screen keyboard sucks

@Gajet I'm primarily a HoN player now so if you've got that I'd be happy to play with ya. Though you would probably prefer to play against me ;)

I've never played HoN.
after playing DOTA and then LOL, I didn't feel like paying a new game with almost the same gameplay

5:57 PM
HoN is more true to the original Dota game with much better features
But to your point, that is exactly why I'm not interested in Dota2

6:07 PM
tears up I found the one: corsair.com/…

ooo

do I hear someelse here played bindings of issac

i've seen people play it

I've seen people play it too, but they're just a small group of friends of my friend! and me!

question: can you use a dishwasher on mechanical keyboards?
That's always what I do for printed-circuit dome keyboards and it seems to do no harm

6:23 PM
I honestly have no clue. I couldn't put my current keyboard in the dishwasher because it has an LCD display

keyboards all have electronic hips inside them, so I doubt you could put any type of keyboard in a dishwasher!

@Gajet you just let it dry for a few days :P
my old dome keyboards have survived multiple trips through the wash
if you're picky, you can take it apart and take out the circuit board and put the rest of it through
hmmm the official site recommends against dishwashers

I really don't think a mechanical keyboard would help me that much

for cheap keyboards though, superuser.com/questions/15609/…

I'm wondering if I can put my laptop in dishwasher!
its keyboard is getting real dirty.

6:34 PM
laptop keyboards usually are removable
at least, all the laptops I've had, you could unscrew a few screws and then pop the keyboard out

Hell there, im having problems with cocos2D for iphone and box2D :/ i cannot integrate it :/ i keep getting errors like this

b2Timer.h - Expected '=', ',', ';', 'asm' or 'attribute' before 'b2Timer'

b2Distance.h - Expected specifier-qualifier-list before 'b2DistanceProxy'

b2Math.h - Cfloat: No such file or directory

I have rename the file to .mm, tried changing the attribute Always Search User Paths (contained in Project Settings -> Search Paths) from YES to NO, and I tried changing the attribute Compile Sources As (contained in Project Settings -> LLVM GCC 4.2 - Language) from Accordin

:O
@Jimmy I wish I had known that!

I've never had to wash a laptop keyboard though... they aren't as deep so they dont' accumulate as much crap as regular keyboards do

@Rudy_TM I've never had such a problem, so, sorry.

Thanks @Gajet :/

6:38 PM
I've had much better luck with my latest laptop since its the chiclet style or whatever its called but before stuff would just slide between the cracks (crumbs mostly lol) and I would have the darndest time pulling off those key caps, sometimes breaking them because they are so cheap

6:56 PM
I've never been big into Dotalikes.
I played about 50 games of the original
LoL feels like a step back imo

I agree - didn't like LoL.

I think I'd like it if elements of the genre were just worked into other games
it seems like it'd be a nice arena in, say, WoW
I'm not sure I'm keen on the idea of snowballing advantage. If your team falls behind for the first half of the round, the second half you're just fighting an uphill battle against higher level opponents with more items

In comparison a 5v5 FPS gives the losing team a chance of a comeback without a hige differential
even in econ-games like Counterstrike, where at most you have to throw a round to save up cash for guns

thanks @thedaian i´ll try it immediately :)

7:06 PM
You make a valid point on that @Jimmy

I'm interested in how the PVP in Diablo 3 turns out
I never actually engaged in duels, but turning the tables on an assassin is one of the most satisfying things ever

On the flip side, I've played many a game where the winning team started to get cocky and began playing rather sloppily allowing us to catch up. Point being it's not necessarily easy mode if you are ahead in the first 20 minutes. I was on a team just the other night that had about 15 less kills than the other team and due to better teamwork and a few heros that scaled significantly better... we slowly gained advantage over the other team and won
I do think that putting less emphasis on the gear until late game would be better. Mid game there should be a slight advantage but if an undergeared player an can out play a well geared player I think in Mid game it should at least be a really close fight if not a win for the undergeared guy
late game for really high tier items I could see there becoming an advantage for one team over another

yeah, I'm not saying it's impossible, it's just unnecessarily hard. But maybe I'm not understanding the genre enough
As a parallel, in a strategy game like Starcraft, if you botch an early engagement, you know you're behind. But the entire game is a series of calculated risks. You can try to force another engagement and try to gain the advantage there, you can try to sneak extra tech or an expansion and hope your opponent doesn't take advantage of the temporary window of weakness. You can always "double down" so to speak, to counter an early disadvantage.
in Dotalikes, I guess there's strats like fighting the creep bosses, but if you're behind, you're even less likely to pull that off successfully

7:27 PM
That is true. There is less strategy in those games... its more like there are rules you must follow or you fail.
I feel that statement doesn't make sense.

i'll just stick with playing left 4 dead

Less freedom of strategy perhaps?

@tylerrrr07 I agree. it's more sports-like, less game-as-in-gametheory. You can always do gambits and strategy in e.g. football, but at the end of the day, a mechanically better player is often going to get more results

7:58 PM
Anyone hear of Antichamber? Looks cool.

now i have, and now i've gone to their website, and i can't buy it or even sign up for a newsletter or anything otherwise useful, so i'm going to instantly forget about it until it comes out in x months and everyone goes crazy about it again

@thedaian you mean like RSS?

:P shush you
for a game that has a million and a half awards, you'd think they'd include a way to buy it

lol

a lot of indie games seem to do that now
drum up a ton of press ages before it's possible to buy
frankly, it's stupid
i mean, it usually works because they're really indie indie games
but their site is just "trailer, awards, quotes from kotaku, bye!"

8:07 PM
And in this case it works because so many tech demos have sparked interest and they don't really have a complete game yet.
And if I had to guess, the make something unreal contest is what is funding the company lol

8:30 PM
I learned way too much about mechanical keyboards just now: overclock.net/t/491752/mechanical-keyboard-guide

now you've done it... I'm reading >:(

Yay, mechanical keyboards!

i should just get a Model M and be done with it

I've never used a model M. :(

Anyone know of a store that actually sells these / has them on display to try out?
I just really don't know how much I would benefit from it
It all would come down to how it feels which I don't necessarily need a game to do... I think.

8:40 PM
stores? ha! plebes do not deserve to lay eyes on a Model M, it is only for high class computer users.

I meant mechanical keyboards in general hehe
oh - looks like some of the tacky gaming keyboards best buy sells are mechanical

@tylerrrr07: If they have a razor blackwidow, that's a pretty normal mechanical keyboard, in terms of key feel.
Steelseries mechanical keyboards use cherry black switches, which most folks consider not to be as good for typing.

yeah, the one I'm looking at buying (potentially today) has Cherry Red
and after reading the article I posted, I know the difference, and what to expect

actually i should just upgrade my entire desktop computer at home this month
that'd be a good project
then i could finally play games on my computer
....or get a Wii

I actually would like to try the cherry black switches. Mostly out of curiosity but part of me thinks I'd like it.

8:51 PM
Cherry red switches are pretty rare, I thought? I always was under the impression that you'd more or less need to order a keyboard from Japan or Korea to get those. But I haven't paid a lot of attention, I'll admit. I prefer clicky keys. Or at least tactile, if I'm somewhere where quiet is important.

Close ALL the questions!

I like quiet keys and don't necessarily know that I care about tactile. I stop pressing the key when I feel pressure beneath my finger. So unless the Black or Brown keys are rather heavy which would throw my brain for a loop compared to what I'm used to, those sound ideal (Brown if I decide I like a little tactileness)
"If you're a person who tends to hit a wrong key every so often while gaming, these will be beneficial in that the high actuation force will help prevent many of those accidental presses."
When I type, if I make a mistake my hands know it and its generally a rather light press. This makes me think black would be a good candidate for me

9:20 PM
I can't believe I just watched a youtube video of someone typing on a bunch of mechanical keyboards
Anyway, red seems ok

You figured that out from a youtube video? XD

hah, yeah. You should see these videos, they have a high emphasis on the sound the keyboards make
and you can hear the difference: youtube.com/watch?v=DDFhDVg0wxg or better yet: youtube.com/watch?v=zzX0MnVzEAU

Just glanced at the news feed and had to laugh at "How To program an RolePlayingGame" particularly the "an" - don't know why I found that so humorous
While accurate, the comment wasn't worded... nicely.
I feel like something needs to be said but I don't know what the proper course of action is.

:/ yeah

9:36 PM
Seems the best course of action would be to direct the question to the correct location and let its existence be decided upon there.

honestly, i see too many bad questions where people direct the user to gamedev.SE, where it still ends up getting closed
the comment is harsh, but valid. it's a bad question, no matter what site it's on

I see your point only the ones they don't want to deal with are sent over.

upvote the guy suggesting game programming wiki, and the guy suggesting a search for XNA + RPG, and go with that

Plenty of good ones never get directed over.

I completely agree in the comment being accurate. I feel like the SE community is supposed to be more professional sounding than he was though

9:49 PM
i kind of feel sorry for the guy, but at the same time the first step to "i want to make a game" after you have an idea, and know the basics of programming, should be to search for tutorials on your language of choice.

I have no sympathy for the asker lol. I just hate jerks

yeah, i'm not a fan of the hashness of the comment. i try to be nice when a question is bad
