12:51 AM
Just got my internet bill lowered by $25 / month for another 12 months!

I pay roughly $70/monthly for my 10/10.

I'm now about $32 monthly for 15/3 I think is what it is
Was paying $55
So not quite $25 but I like nice numbers that end in 5s or 0s
I was getting angry seeing all the billboards for the great deals for new members while I'm sitting at home getting a full day outage what seemed like once a month, and just the other day I had to manually change my DNS settings to point to googles servers because my ISPs servers were not working
I was fed up, complained, and got my bill lowered

It's the only high speed provider in my area so I couldn't really cancel.. but I figured if I complained something may happen and it did :)

Q: Possible account merge?

JimI'm not sure if this should go here or on the meta meta, but since it applies specifically to gamedev.stackexchange, I thought this a good place to start? I recently stumbled upon this question and answer, which were asked and answered by these two users: diede apers diede apers Based on the...

memegenerator is down. Maybe someone was trying to do a Bobby Tables meme.

Heh
Little Bobby Tables

awwww
anyone have thoughts on what to do when a user is asking extremely basic questions? this user, specifically:

5:36 PM
Give him good links on object oriented programming

it's not even object oriented programming
it's stuff like if/else statements
loops and variables...

Oh yeah... hehe. For his recruit question my mind went immediately to creating classes to manage all of that information and completely skipped on the basics

i mean, there's all sorts of cool higher level things someone could do to solve his recruit question, but at this point, i think he needs a book on programming 101

yeah.....
is anyone going to tell him to "learn Java"? because I'm tempted...

go for it. "learn java" or "learn programming" or something... ideally, try to be nice about it, too

5:43 PM
The user seems like they're a pretty quick learner...
I suspect he (or she) isn't completely new to programming

have you looked at his/her blog?
the user is some kind of fanfic writer or something that has written... a Pythagorean Theorem solver in Java
i.e. "input a" "input b" print hypotenuse is a*a+b*b

yeah, the blog is more "i write novels" and the most advanced program is something that solves for distance

the writing is terrible too

none of his demo programs use loops or if/else statements

5:47 PM
On the plus side he has something I don't - motivation.

I'd say he (or she) isn't a lost cause, at any rate.

well, I'm not saying "lost cause"
I'm saying "doesn't know if/when/for"

based on the blog, he is a he. and i don't think he's a lost cause. but he does need to learn some of the basics.
i'm willing to bet he's a high school student or something, so i'm not going to comment on his writing ability or honestly programming ability (i couldn't really do either very well when I was in high school)

I'm actually confused because other questions of his include loops, inheritance, etc. I'm not understanding how he's getting tripped up on these problems?

the other questions don't include loops/inheritance.
unless you mean it includes the word "inheritance" followed by 20 lines of "public int X = 5" declarations

5:50 PM
some of the answers to the questions include them, though

My guess is that he's struggling more with conveying his questions in English than he is with basic programming concepts.

@TreDubZedd he writes 200-page novels in English. I'm pretty sure it's not an english problem

Hm, ok. I'll concede that point, then.

he seems like a native speaker, or at least one with enough knowledge to understand and write English. i've talked to plenty of people who do struggle with English here, he doesn't seem like one.

I am 95% certain his problem is that he doesn't know what if is
He's written 4 blog posts about Java programs and none of them have any flow control

5:53 PM
I agree.

Q: Random Calculations for Strategy Based Games in Java

Elven XI am making a console based strategy game like Genghis Khan: Legend of the White Wolf, although it is in console. How can I implement the Random Calculation in there? First off, the game goes like this, for example you have 34 Soldiers and the enemy has 45 Archers. Say you attack the Archers, nor...

This one has a for loop and I guess I just assumed he was using inheritance in his inheritance question lol... my bad.
granted now that I look...

@all hi

for (int j = 1; j <= 1; j++) - this will be trouble

ahh, the good old do { } while false; loop :P

lol

I used to use that as a GOTO construct. you can use break or continue inside that do loop and it's basically a goto.

6:14 PM
ugh memegenerator

There should be a commonly understood limit on how "noob" a question can be
hmm maybe not
math.SE seems to have no such policy but they haven't decayed into chaos

anyone want's to see my website? I really want to know what other programers think about it, so i could know what i do wrong :)

6:30 PM
@Jimmy I bet they'd yell at me if I asked them what 1+1 was, though :P
@Chorche Everything :P But let's see your site

@thedaian Umm, that wass kind of rude.. Why do you think that i'm doing everything wrong?

@thedaian the answer to 1+1 one might be a completely inappropriate one that derives addition from Peano's postulates

@Chorche Sorry, the "Everything" bit was a joke, also I haven't seen your website so I have no clue what you're doing wrong

@Chorche He was joking because you obviously haven't provided a link yet. Also a :P smiley is often a good sign someone is joking around with you and not meaning to be offensive.

oh :D
www.scoopoly.com

6:33 PM
@Jimmy Yeah, apparently there's a proof that 1+1 = 2 out there and it's about 20 pages long or something....

please don't hurt my feelings because i was working hard
visit the "Visuals" page, because it's the oly availible page for now :D
there are no videos at the moment

well, if you assume peano, it'd be something like 1 = S(0). 1 + 1 -> 1 + S(0) = S(1+0) = S(1) = S(S(0)) = 2

and not much images at the moment
oh and i'm really sorry for those who use older browsers
because i havent worked on the browser support yet
so what do you think? :D

Overall I like it - just some general user experience things that need tweaking I think
The text inside the circle is difficult to read, especially the with the clouds passing through
And then my only other major complaint is that the style is not consistent across pages. The home page, the Coming Soon pages, and the Visual pages all feel like different "themes" and I feel like it should be one theme

@Chorche Actually it looks very good, there's some minor issues with <td> and a </table> tag in the visuals page when there's not actually a table, and some minor things with the code itself, but nothing really bad or terrible or wrong.
Making the entire site fit one theme would be a good idea, though

6:39 PM
But overall the design is very creative - better than I could do.
I need someone to give me a design, and then I can make it :D

I need to be able to maintain a blog first :P
then I will design my site properly

@Jimmy that too!

6:56 PM
Thank you :)
I actualy expected something like "what??? You call that a website?"

I have seen much, much worse when it comes to websites.
the only issues with your website are really pretty minor complaints

7:20 PM
not enough blink tags and fire animated GIFs

7:32 PM
@all are there any websites where developers can sell they're pc apps and games? Something like android market, but for pc games and apps

7:58 PM
Steam?

8:09 PM
@Jimmy I never thought I would enjoy writing a blog until I decided to start writing one. I don't write a lot, and I'm almost certain nobody reads it, but that's ok. It's for me, and me alone. I guess that was my first realization, it's only for yourself and to keep you thinking about what you have and haven't done, and it keeps you honest maybe?

:P I read it sometimes

The Gratuitous Space Battles guy recommended starting a daily checklist of things that you did that day, and I've sort of taken that into my blog
@Jimmy Well... it's not all that interesting if I do say so myself
"I added a health bar into the game, and... I'm working on components?"
Weeee, real fun

Back when I kept mine, I tried to make it informative for people who would be in a similar spot as myself.

I'm currently playing around with a couple things that might make interesting blog posts
one would be writing a simple game engine in F#
some concepts are really F#-ishly expressed and some concepts are a bit funky because I'm adapting too many OOPism from my C# habits

@TreDubZedd yeah, some of my older posts were more useful in that regard. I've actually got 2 blogs going right now, one strictly for AO and small little updates, the "main" blog that contains only the big updates for AO and other stuff that is potentially more useful or interesting to a wider audience
@Jimmy ok, yeah, that could be an interesting post

8:39 PM
@JohnMcDonald where was the health bar needed in your game?

.. Why was it needed? or... where did I blog about it?

IIRC that was the component that needed to follow other components
or was that the text label? :P

There are many, but yeah, it's one that needs to follow. I was talking to a friend of mine in the biz, and I'm going to be doing some re-re-design soon

re-re-design is the best design

Wait... we're making List of X questions into CWs?
3
Q: Questions that are "list of X"

TetradA lot of the questions currently on the site are things like "Give me a list of options for X". There is a decent amount of precedence for these kinds of questions being discouraged on StackExchange style sites. For example, "Should we have a “List of X” close reason?". And on the meta gaming ...

8:44 PM
My favorite is un-re-designs

why rereredesign?

@TrevorPowell heh, first it was re-design from Object Oriented -> Components, now it's from Components with all the logic baked in -> Components + Systems

Components with logic baked in sounds exactly the same as objectoriented to me
I must be missing something

Well... it sort of is
but sort of isn't... in a sense
but yeah. I'm going to make my components become strictly data, which they are not right now

I've never worked on a game that used "components are only data" as its approach. It always sounded like the best solution to me, though.
Well.. most optimal for performance anyway.

8:48 PM
the logic I was baking in was directly related to the data in the component. So a position component has a position + velocity, and it has an update that applies the velocity
@TrevorPowell yeah... some of it is starting to become a little clearer as I work through it

So you go from

class PositionComponent {
void Update() {
Position += Velocity;
}
}

to

class PositionSystem {
void Update(PositionComponent c) {
c.Position += c.Velocity;
}
}

that's pretty much the plan, :p

At that point, you're basically back programming in vanilla C again. ;)

There are other advantages, like my Radius component needs to know about the Position component in order to tell whether it's intersecting with an other Radius

This seems really fine-grained to me :(

8:52 PM
So instead of the Radius knowing more than it needs to, the Position system will do that
yeah... it really is, and I really don't know where to draw the line
But not all things with a position have a radius

my "systems" are like, Graphics/Network/Script/Physics, not "radius/position/velocity"

yeah, I'd probably toss this all into a Physics system, even though there's no real physics taking place (yet)

well one issue is that things can have positions but they might not be integrated into physics

so the "PositionSystem" will actually be called "PhysicsSystem" and will be able to contain more than just position updating

or well, you have different "physics" systems
kind of like how in Skyrim, when something dies, the model gets detached from whatever scripted animation system and gets plugged into the ragdoll system

8:55 PM
yeah... my friend just updates the positions from scripts, so instead of having a "PositionSystem", it's just a script that gets executed in the ScriptSystem
@Jimmy ah yeah, that's nice. So there's a bit of actor/pawn going on in the system layer, cool

9:15 PM
@JohnMcDonald that's what we used to do. Now either either valuable enough to keep open/not CW (rare) or closed

I know it's not related, but can anyone anwser an AJAX question?
The users in SO chat are very rude

probably

xmlhttp.open("GET","demo_get2.asp?fname=Henry&lname=Ford",true);
how can i hake demo_get2.asp?fname=Henry&lname=Ford view in link bar
ore whatever it's called :d
linkbox

address bar?

9:21 PM
yeah :D

why would you want to?
trying to maintain history?

what does that have to do with AJAX?
AJAX == no address bar changes. No AJAX == address bar changes

@Chorche From earlier, but Steam is one, but hard to get into. Desura and IndieCity are probably the two major ones out there right now for small, indie projects

So it's imposible?
@thedaian oh, thanks ;)

@Chorche I would bet it's impossible, unless there's a javascript way to modify the address bar without actually going to that address, but then that's just hacky

9:23 PM
@JohnMcDonald well yes
@JohnMcDonald i don't need to go to that adress
lets say i have five buttons
when you click on the first the website displays video1, second video2 ect..

ok...
let me guess, using ajax?

Q: Modify the URL without reloading the page

JenkoIs there any way I can modify the URL of the current page without reloading the page? I would like to access the portion before the # hash if possible. I only need to change the portion after the domain, so its not like I'm violating cross-domain policies. window.location.href = "www.mysite.c...

and you want people to bookmark them

yeah
exactly

why not user server-side URL-rewriting

9:26 PM
Well there you have it, only in HTML 5

and skip the AJAX
like, each button is just a link to that a URL

@Jimmy requires a full page reload doesn't it?

I think the reason for AJAX is to make it feel more responsive, and more like an app than a website

okay thanks
bye

your link could be something like showvideo.asp#video1
as long as you don't change the actual URL, changing document location doesn't refresh the page
that's the standard pre-HTML5 way to do it

9:33 PM
Ah, interesting. And I'm guessing the JS can look up the anchor used and load something different?

yeah

10:04 PM
hi @john
i make terrain using chipmunk spacemanager
i started learning it do u have any idea in chipmunk spacemanager

I've never even heard of chipmunk spacemanager, sorry

10:21 PM
@thedaian D: no rss feed? isotower.com

no. isotower doesn't even have a database or anything behind it. it's all basically hard-coded.

i know, i know. the reason is that this method gives me full control over everything, instead of having to fight wordpress's billion styles when themeing something

:/ yeah. I used to always write my own pages from the ground up, then I started to use Joomla and now I can't go back

You have more control when you host your own wordpress
At least that was my experience

10:25 PM
i host my own wordpress on my other, personal blog (which i never touch)

so I've noticed

I need to find some decent but cheap windows hosting

if i wanted, I could make Isotower's site into wordpress of joomla or drupal or something

Why the windows requirement?

actually i'll probably get a forum software and hook the news feed up to that

10:26 PM
I get much more joy out of developing .NET

@tylerrrr07 .. yeah.. I guess ASP can be a little more fun than PHP, but.. It's still web programming. Every time I do it, I feel like I'm fighting with the browser
@thedaian yeah, I used to do that all the time. Makes adding news a little more painless

also a forum system is vital to my anti-piracy method

I've been using Google Reader to consume my articles and keep up to date on a number of websites and blogs, and sadly it doesn't look like it's integrated into G+ yet

@JohnMcDonald A lot of it is the tools I think. Anything remotely Visual Studio esque for PHP?

@tylerrrr07 Rapid PHP? I tried a trial one time and it wasn't bad

10:30 PM
I assume Eclipse has a plugin for every language ever

PHPStorm? I think that's the name...

I honestly don't like Eclipse. Or maybe I just don't like Java. :P

Eclipse is great if you're not using it for Java :P

Who knew!

Eclipse has PDT
But I preferred Aptana over PDT

10:33 PM
Pacific Daylight Time?

PHP Developer Tools
PDT is based on the Zend IDE that uses Eclipse

I've used Aptana, it's nice.

I use sublime or textmate now though. Much faster.

I used aptana for javascript, wasn't impressed

Visual Studio is pretty bad for JS too
At least its intellisense

10:35 PM
Visual Studio is pretty bad for anything that isn't .NET

True.

that isn't C# :P

shrugs I've only really ever used it for C#, and html/js

user4704
and it's getting worse, even for C#

user4704
(see the VS11 fiasco)

10:36 PM
intellisense is kind of flaky in both VC++ and F#

Ooo. We could go halfsies on the WeBuilder 2011 (One step up from Rapid PHP from the same company) since if you buy that you get a second license free! $70 suddenly became $35! Who's in?! :P
hmm

honestly, i'm fine with using notepad++ for php
i never do big projects in php anymore (i never do big web projects anymore...)

That's because you are lacking a proper IDE :P

proper IDEs are overrated

(and it's cause PHP kind of stinks for large projects...)

10:40 PM
^^
I love tools. I should find a company that makes development tools and work for them

I guess this is to be expected. But the quality of discussion in CS373 is much better than CS101. Is anyone else doing the Udacity stuff?

Go work for whoever makes Eclipse :P

Hadn't heard of Udacity. Looks interesting.

I don't like tools. All I need is my trusty hammer

I don't understand the site and I don't know that I want to sign up. How does enrolling work? Is there actually a schedule or is it a learn at your own pace deal?

10:45 PM
There is a schedule, but so far you just sign up for classes as they become available.
CS101 and 373 makes me believe that there will be two tracks.
Each class is 7 weeks long.

ah
helps if I read

Also I haven't seen this mentioned yet: altdevblogaday.com/2012/02/27/altdevconf-session-videos Alt Dev Converence session videos are out, presentations from various indie developers and professional developers.

Gotta drive! Be back later

@thedaian I agree. I have no idea how to organize a largish project in PHP. Every time I tried, I ended up with unmaintainable spaghetti before getting anywhere

I like ASP.NET.
But that's because I can use C#. :P
It's easy peasy.
Finding an IIS webhost cheaply is difficult though.

10:53 PM
I wonder if anyone major is using ASP.NET on Mono

I wonder if I could use Mono for the hacking projects I've been doing.
Would be cool to have crossplatform support for my SharpCraft project.
I guess it'd be a lot of work.

11:11 PM
what is a sharpcraft

It's an old hack for Warcraft III, allowing you to inject C# into the scripting engine via a plugin system.
Not something I'm working on anymore, but it's still something I love doing.
