@Almo What's your pilot's name in EVE?

4 hours later…
05:04
@AlexandreVaillancourt norjia blacksteel
@Ali.S riot was founded by guinsoo and another, who had dotaallstars before icefrog got it. So it's not a good argument that valve is the best to get dota.

@Almo Added, I'm off to bed, good night!

That's really awesome! Are those tiny Svens?
Yes lol, just placeholder atm
Was wondering if anyone would spot them hah
user92578
lol

I bought a 10$ Roblox gift card for my son since he was good. He bought a builders club pass and now has 4.10$ credit.
There is absolutely no way to spend that 4.10 as the cheapest item they have is 5$
No way to refund no way to split payment no way to use it unless I buy a other 10$ gift card.
well played, Roblox
I'm ready to file a class action lawsuit.
You are looking at millions of dollars that cannot be used.
I emailed them and they made it very clear that there is absolutely no way for me to get or spend that credit.
We would again like to inform you that the remaining balance will be in your account forever and due to which there is no refund in such cases.
Like what the fuck?
It is literally impossible to be at 0 credit.
I'm gonna look for a lawyer that is willing to class action this shit. Im gonna start rounding up users with 3$ in their account.
Thats so clever and wrong at the same time
It isn't clever it's fucken robbery
Almost like providing a service for 7.99$/month but only providing 10$ giftcards
11:35
There is now way to add the missing balance
There is absolutely no way to spend your fucken money
They just take it
I'm fucken pissed off
We have that here in Denmark, but with the public transportation system
I don't fucken care that it is just 4$
Can you combine the giftcard with another one?
I fucken care that this is scamming people and they are profiting greatly from it
Yes but you can only get 10$ min
So it is impossible ever get to 0 balance
Create a service that allows people to combine their giftcards safely, then give them back their money.. Take a 20% cut yourself for profit :P
11:37
5.90 is the cheapest thing you can get
Dude it isn't my fucken job to treat customers properly
Imagine going to a store and only being able to pay in 10 dollar increments and then they keep money that isn't theirs
It is illegal
Jep and people just accept it because its only 4$
It's money I spent so my son could use it and he can't even

Motivation...
15:53
What's that?
the anti-reddit
It's something that I don't seem to have, and I hear it helps you to get things done.
16:14
Dangle a carrot in front of yourself
yeah... I've never found anything to work all that well. You've got to find fun bits to work on
Also, Hi guys!
16:49
Work in progress, the bottom left dialog.
I know it doesn't line up right as well, I'll get there eventually... Does it seem like something useful?
Eventually, but meh. It's readable
I remember this game. It's lookin' good, :)
17:13
It's coming along:-)
Is the way the ship/ text interact a dealbreaker?
Or should I save it for another day?
17:29
Should draw over the boat. Possibly fade it out when you arrive to it.
Put it on the UI somewhere saying you are currently at saint Vincent or something
17:44
@PearsonArtPhoto imo: Depends. Having the boat over the text makes the boat the subject of attention, and can provide the "moving a boat on a paper map" feel
18:21
Yay, got my world to render inside* a div defined by my GUI's HTML.
* not literally inside, but in the bounds provided
LOL 15 mins of debugging why my poly area wasn't getting shrunk according to the value in the XML file. Forgot to pass the parameter. Read it, printed it, didn't pass it to the poly generator function.
Now I need to extend the platform ends so they overhang a bit.
18:48
Perfect. Now I need to model side wall and bottom side tiles.

guys passing array by reference
Surface surf[2];

Func(surf[0]);

void Func(const Surface& surf)
{
	surf[0].Draw();
}
why does this not working ?
did i missed something ?
@yahoo5000 I'm more of a C# guy, but don't you need to do Func(*surf[0]);?
* would dereference from pointer to reference i dont need that because my surf array is not a pointer
:/ yeah. Don't the caller and callee need to complement each other though? You're passing in a surface, and accepting a something to a surface. Should you not pass in a reference to the surface, and accept a pointer to a surface?
I might be totally out to lunch, since it's been a long time since I did anything in C/++
u mean ?

Surface surf[2];

Func(surf[0]);

void Func(const Surface* surf) ?
Func(&surf[0]);

void Func(const Surface* surf)
19:57
and then pass reference of array ?
that would work i guess
but was wondering why reference is not working
I think it's because surf[0] is a Surface, not a pointer. Just because you're calling something that wants a reference/pointer doesn't mean that the compiler will do it for you
Perhaps you mean to call Func(surf). That would pass in an array of surfaces, and arrays are pointers (kinda)
@yahoo5000

void Func(const Surface (&surf)[2])
{
surf[0].Draw();
}
and the call is Func(surf);
yea i was found this sample on SO but as far as i remember i as doing passing surf[0] and then somehow it was working for me or i might forgot havent doing coding for a while . will go with pointer probably
Ok, and const Surface (&surf)[2] is a reference to a Surface array of length 2?
tnx for help
yea
20:02
ok
i think i could do (&surf)[]
Do you even need the []?
or like this void Func(const Surface surf[]);
BUT, it's nice to have those, even if you don't need them
What you should do is:

void Func(const Surface *surf, size_t count)
{
....
}

template < size_t COUNT >
inline void Func( const Surface (&object)[COUNT] )
{
Func(&object[0], COUNT);
}
20:05
mmm, </3 C++
This way you can pass any array to Func and it will automagically convert it to Func( array, count)
The inline template version in the compiled code ends up not existing at all.
okay tnx
@JohnMcDonald Yes, it means a reference to an array of 2 const Surface
I prefer to create the (pointer, count) function and then use an inline template overload that converts the call automatically.
That means I can also use an std::vector<Surface> surfaces; and pass it at no cost if I create another inline overload:

inline void Func( const std::vector<Surface> &objects)
{
Func(objects.data(), objects.size());
}
And for 1 object:

inline void Func( const Surface &object)
{
Func(&object, 1);
}
user92578
20:54
Or just use std::array...
@Almo I was making an argument about technical aspects of the game: saying there were few game companies (at time of development of dota2) who had successful internet based games
Hey Ali!
@Tyyppi_77 yeah, if your compiler supports C++11 properly.
@JohnMcDonald hey you are back!
Hey. Probably not for long, but I'm here!
21:08
some news: I'm going to be on a flight in less than 36 hours
destination: Ottawa
Hah, cool
yup... going to find a job for 6 months
I'll start masters (again) in carleton starting next fall
@Ali.S Purely online games are bad, if the developer shuts the servers, then the game becomes completely unplayable, and not every developer is blizzard, who keep their servers up for literally 20+ years.
21:13
@Bálint valve is apparently
and valve usually releases their server binaries before they shut their own dedicated servers down
That's a good poimt
But some games literally require you to reverse engineer what the server supposed to do, and hope you achieved everything
well I was making a point back then, that valve actually was one of the best companies that could go for developing dota2
I mean they've always been praised for the quality of the networking in their codes (which is pretty critical in dota2)
Practice makes perfect
exactly
Though, Blizzard has better server IMO
21:21
I mean who else has the infrastructure to build an internet-based game, so huge region free? with such a capabilities for broad casting?
@Bálint nah... I never could play a single blizzard game lag free
I could play star craft without any problems, but that really depends on your location
The servers are actually close to me
I never tried star craft
but diablo3 as well as wow both were laggy as hell
but to be honest when I tried diablo3, I could not play any game besides dota2...
I mean TF2 was laggy too, so was battle field heroes

Only thing is I can't get MODO to easily preview the material close to what it really looks like in my engine.
Actually, it shows up fine in the OpenGL preview but the render view shows it washed out
Modo's OpenGL preview.
22:23
oh, forgot to convert to triangles. gotta bake again.
