@Almo your idea of friction??
I have a master's degree in physics
Jon
Jon
I don't
so to me, friction is the force that results when two touching objects move relative to each other.
I don't, but I know friction is velocity dependent
13:00
What's physics.
higher the speed , lesser the friction?
I feel like it jolts
not slides
friction*$(*@#&$ is related to the square of velocity
13:02
?
how?
I.e., the friction = velocity^2
speed is just the magnitude of the velocity vector
and if I tap forward and hold left
velocity is a vector
13:02
I never loose velocity
My bad
@Almo wrong word =p
oh hahah :)
What do you mean, "How?" <mean comments here>
<snarky comment>
Speed is related to the square of velocity, because it is the square root of it ;)
Heh true enough =p
I meant how is friction = velocity^2
ohh
13:06
@Sword @Almo gave you a good enough answer
Hence the "wrong word" bit
And me editing it
Jon
Jon
Friction makes my weiner happy
6 mins ago, by Almo
I have a master's degree in physics
I used the wrong autocomplete lmao
hahah ;)
@Sword by... measuring it? That's the rough equation
For reality
Or is that only for air resistance? @Almo would know!
13:08
@Sword and don't get me wrong, normally I am all for being against religious answers
I just used it casually.. that is a bad approach , I know..
religious??
It's just "known" to be correct
But in this case, if you don't know where to start proving against it.... Trust the masters degree lol
@MickLH where "known" is defined as shown to be correct in multiple measurements, explained via many theories and, you know, the regular scientific rigor thing?
Not to him
All of you know a lot more than me , I wouldn't argue with any of you ; rather I am asking why is it so and how.. because I may not know the actual reason.. :)
13:11
I need to make sure you're carefully trained before it's my turn to help lol, these guys are nicer than me
Yeah, be afraid of @MickLH
He's scary
=p
Learning. As Almo mentioned that I was doing it wrong ,I asked for the right way..
yeah I'm already scared ;_;
god damnit
well, I said "if you want 'realistic' friction" it's wrong
you may not actually want "realistic" friction.
Jon
Jon
he doesn't want realistic friction
he is applying it to the BG and not the car
13:12
if what you have gives gameplay you like, then it's right.
Yeah, my advice: Model the car moving, not the background
@Sword you were supposed to take it as a joke and decide I must be light hearted and harmless
shit that time already
@KevinvanderVelden he's right on this
30 secs ago, by Kevin van der Velden
Yeah, my advice: Model the car moving, not the background
you model the car moving, then adjust the background for where the car went.
13:13
well it looked good ecxcept for the timeshift; it seems to render so slow and I make it super fast but there;s something weird that happens..
Because everything you'll find and experience will be related to modeling the car, and having to invert all the logic is just gonna make your head hurt
Jon
Jon
Yeah.. you need to mvoe the BG based on the car
not the other way around
And the y coordinate of the car is fixed
it can only go left or right..
@MickLH you are scaring me now..
I didn't want to resort to this...
No, it can go any way, the camera is just always centered on it
(In the Y axis at least)
13:15
I now officially blame all of you guys, I could have been easier for him if you all just permalinked kevin's original message.
@KevinvanderVelden yes
well, the 'yes' was for Kevin
I know
That's why "see" was able to convey the joke by itself
@Sword trust me, speaking from experience, model the car moving, get that working, then you can just say at render time "I am rendering the car.y at the center of the screen, and the background at negative car.y"
No need to worry about it being faster than other sprites and such
And you can just model the velocity of the car as one thing, rather than being hidden in the position of the background and the horizontal position of the car
Jon
Jon
well, don't move the car on the Y axis
Just use the Car's velocity as the catalyst to move the BG
@Jon yes , that was what I was doing. The background velocity was actually the velocity of the car..
Jon
Jon
13:19
sounds good to me
But both of you differ in opinion..
Jon
Jon
You can do it either way
I chose to keep an axis value constant to reduce complexities..
Well that failed
Jon
Jon
moving the car will requrie you to move your BGs around as the car moves
13:20
yes that happens..
Try solving the problem in a way that isn't ridiculously over-complicated. Like maybe reasoning about the problem itself.
the only problem was the wrong unit being used..Updating at the wrong intervals of time..
Usually adding extra complexity doesn't help you reach minimum complexity. FYI.
Jon
Jon
very similar game that I did -- BG moves based on the char falling
13:21
that link is empty @Jon
Jon
Jon
i can give you the movement code
the one u posted a few mins back
@Tyyppi_77 !
@Jon you created this one??
@Tyyppi_77 what does gun hero look like today
Jon
Jon
13:22
this is a game i made for my son in 8 hours :)
my own gamejam
@Jon yeah sure , would be grateful :)
Jon
Jon
trying to find it for you
@Jon awesome.. Looks fun; but a body rip for a 3yr old??
Jon
Jon
well he was 6 at the time of playing
and he loved it
:D
user92578
13:24
Jon
Jon
frikken lazers
user92578
nah, just miniguns
baller I love always seeing something new
@Tyyppi_77 an MP5??
@Tyyppi_77 damn, keeps looking better
Though yeah, those are definitely better suited to be LAZERS
13:25
(I thought they were laz0rs too)
brb in 15 mins..
Maybe a bit less tracing to make them look more like bullets?
user92578
it's more obivous when the bullets move
And then another gun with a bit more tracing for lasers
user92578
@KevinvanderVelden sure, good call
13:26
@Tyyppi_77 aah probably, the difficulty with screenshots
AAAH I WANNA GO HOME AND GAMEDEV
user92578
lol
I HAVE IDEAS AND THEY WANT OUT OF MY HEAD AND IN TO CODE
Jon
Jon
@Sword can't find the code... I think its on my other laptop
user92578
Better?
user92578
Jon
Jon
13:27
meh, i'll get it
@Tyyppi_77 yeah, they look like bullets at first glance now
Though maybe a bit more orangy?
Jon
Jon
i'm actually excited to play this @Tyyppi_77
user92578
Well I'd like for the players to be quickly able to tell what bullets are harmfull and what not
user92578
so player bullets are yellow and enemy bullets red
user92578
@Jon that's nice to hear, thanks!
Jon
Jon
13:30
PLugged in laptop -- turned it on -- came out of hybernation and says "Shutting Down"
user92578
God I love my new "you killed and enemy and now you're free to pick his gun up and unleash it's massive shooting powers" feature
Jon
Jon
Noooooo
:D
user92578
lol!
@Tyyppi_77 Aah that makes sense, red it is!
user92578
sometimes I make good design decisions :)
Jon
Jon
13:31
red == dead, yellow == mellow
yep, its good
WTF
23667 update operations
Applying update 309 of 23667 update operations.. on my laptop
lol
user92578
So I just found out that I will be doing my "finals" on a computer. So I think I'll try to break the OS we'll be using for the exams on the weekend
@Tyyppi_77 heck yeah, the game looks awesome!
@Tyyppi_77 No
I was gonna get all lovey dovey, but you gave me an excuse to get hardass again
@Tyyppi_77 Don't do this. Schools don't like being hacked. They don't like it a lot.
@Tyyppi_77 do not do this
user92578
They had a contest a while back: "Break the OS and win a prize"
13:33
I've never been allowed to stay at a school after I hacked it. Even if I did nothing but gain entrance and leave.
@Tyyppi_77 Then enter the contest, do not fuck with your exam anything
user92578
well it's not on anymore
user92578
and I'm not going to actually do anything
lolk
Jon
Jon
when i was in HS, I knew more about computers than our computer teacher
user92578
it was just a thought, like, "I'll see what a modified Linux OS looks like, and maybe I can create something cool"
Jon
Jon
13:35
was pretty easy to hack the school networks back then... probably still is nowadays
Oh well if you just steal a copy and take it home then you're probably safe
user92578
Yeah, that was my thought
But if it has the exams on it already then you better keep that shit quiet
user92578
I can just clone it on GitHub too
And clean up any loose ends if anyone sees you do it
Jon
Jon
13:35
LOL -- Change the name, problem solved.
user92578
@MickLH Nah, the exams are hosted on a server
@Tyyppi_77 good luck
user92578
I love it when READMEs refer to files that do not exist
Joe
Joe
@Jon fluff article?
> Although the company is killing the Internet Explorer brand, it will not go away completely.
wtf
Jon
Jon
Yeah the article is shit
They are simply changing the name
but the article makes it sound like it is a new product, which is bull
13:39
But the bull microsoft wants people to believe
Jon
Jon
But that is what Microsoft wants people to think.
Joe
Joe
article name change... "some bullshit to get you to click this"
@Joe Too accurate, you removed the bullshit ironically
Jon
Jon
I see link bait like that on FB all the time. "You will never believe what this father of 2 did to overcome his diarrhea."
Joe
Joe
lololol
Jon
Jon
13:40
instead of "Man overcomes diarrhea by eating cheese"
bad example, but I am just a programmer
Joe
Joe
"one crazy trick the doctors dont want you to know... eat vegetables"
Jon
Jon
i saw one this morning... cure cancer by eating 5lbs of carrots, juiced, daily
"I started with 3lbs of carrots, and didn't see any results.. so I went up to 5lbs"
"after the cancer was gone, he stopped eating carrots, and his skin color returned to normal"
now people with cancer are gonna go out and buy 100lbs of carrots
lol
Joe
Joe
and this stuff WORKS because people... oof im going to stop there... I swear idiocracy is happening while we watch
yes, feel the dark side
Jon
Jon
13:43
By Ann Cameron -- profiting off of her cancer cure.
Pretty obvious what is going on here... Ann is a carrot farmer.
Joe
Joe
if she wasnt
she is now, trading on those carrot futures on "the forex" lol
Jon
Jon
It is easy to make money off smoeone dying of cancer.
pretty sure this is exactly what is going on here.
@Jon no problem; thankful that you bothered to spend your precious time on searching some stuff for me.. :)
Jon
Jon
oh yeah.. my laptop is on now.. hold on
@Sword You pissed me off but it's not your fault and I'd like to take a stab at friendship some better time.
Jon
Jon
13:47
you need to nurture the noobs
unless they are dickheads
Sword doesn't seem like a dickhead
I don't think so either
Jon
Jon
Now will someone tell me how to create a jelly physics editor in unity? or am i gonna have to insult everyone in this room?
What does jelly physics editor mean?
user92578
probably, somehow my hidden unity skills pop to the surface when someone calls me an asshole
Jon
Jon
Its pretty clear what I am asking, are you stupid?
13:50
damnit I was typing the typo version already
Jon
Jon
lol
user92578
@MickLH haha, I knew you were
Jon
Jon
there was a guy yesterday asking about jelli physics or something
user92578
yes i do
Jon
Jon
was being super rude about it
13:51
@Jon No, and no.
tee hee
@MickLH I think that you assume me to be a help vampire or something , but to tell you - I don't expect any ready-made code for myself . Just to tell you - I dont work under anyone , I am independent and this thing is what I want to do in my career . I just did s course in coursera for gaming ; thats it . I have no prior experience in Java and I started last mont . Last week I started coding and I was doing all stuffs myself ;
just came here for ideas and advice on best approaches. If you load to my first message, I dint ping anyone for help, because I know everyone has work to do...
Lol I know, I was serious saying it's not your fault
I'd have to dig up an article with specifics but there are some major changes between Project Spartan and IE
Question: Do help vampires sparkle?
The browser on the whole is supposed to be significantly more light weight
13:53
I don't know why that popped in my head
But I felt the need to share
Joe
Joe
@KevinvanderVelden damn right they sparkle like the crappy kind of vampire that they are, and you find them in barnes and noble in the "teenage romance fantasy" aisle
@KevinvanderVelden sparkle as in?
@Sword twilight
@Joe aight, just so that's clear

Q: Glow is synonymous with bloom

ratchet freak15 questions on glow and 12 on bloom while they describe the same effect, only bloom has a tag-wiki description.

@MickLH I even checked this <--[link here]before asking here.. But I did not understand that..
13:56
woah dude woah
user92578
Should't that go here
user92578
15
Q: Which tags are useless or blacklisted?

TetradInstead of having a bunch of threads on individual tags, how about we try a wiki-style list. In each answer, put the tag in question as well as your rationale as to why that tag should be removed. For reference, here's the blog posting on the death of meta tags. This list can also cover tag sy...

Joe
Joe
@Sword its ok man ... the council has spoken we agree your good... FOR NOW, dont screw up :D
Jon
Jon
@Sword looking at my code -- I position the camera based on the velocity of my character -- using Lerp functions and other things
Probably not very useful for you -- I could probably write up a demo pretty fast for this
@Sword Don't try to invoke empathy on me, you're wasting your time. @KevinvanderVelden was not joking you should be afraid of me lol
user92578
13:56
what's the question?
4 mins ago, by Kevin van der Velden
Question: Do help vampires sparkle?
Jon
Jon
I also move my character and backgrounds at the same time
user92578
no, @Sword's question
Jon
Jon
totally different implementation :)
@Tyyppi_77 WELL FINE
13:57
@Jon I did not go for the camera because the camera is static ; the only objects that would appear to move would be the other cars.. their velocity would be relative..
user92578
@SpartanDonut hah sorry
user92578
I think the sparkle in twilight is the lack of facial expressions
the enemycars velocity was easy ; just assign a specific value - Bg.getVelocity();
@MickLH i'm okay now.. you can joke around with me ; I thought you were serious at the beginning..
Once you get past my unorthodox emotional interface, it's actually easy to work with me.
I prefer to be paid in the glory of success, if I see you putting my ideas to use I'll keep feeding them to you
@MickLH yes sure; I respect your ideas :)
14:01
I'm glad you can socially learn where I appear to stand with this crowd, but you don't have to stroke my ego at all
Jon
Jon
if you do stroke it, be very aggressive, its what he likes
user92578
lol
(I didn't say no?)
@Sword But seriously if you have math questions that's what I love most I think
take a look at this : This was our final assignment in the course @MickLH
@Jon I'll try it with Vector2 first as you mentioned above .. I think that should work ..
Jon
Jon
yes it should
code you pasted above crashed when I hit an asteroid
Line 168: undefined: [Exception... "Failure" nsresult: "0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE)" location: "JS frame :: codeskulptor.org/skulpt/skulpt.min.js line 758 > eval :: $builtinmodule/sound/$loc.play< :: line 140"
if i was your teacher, i'd give you a big fat F
14:09
Jon
Jon
shakes fist wildly
@Sword I had fun playing it, but I got to I think score 75 so I had to up the ante
I increased spawn rate to 10 per second instead of 1
And increased velocity to +/- 3 instead of 0.3
user92578
dynamic_cast won't bleed memory, right?
@MickLH someone created an advanced version.. Let me link that here..
14:13
@Tyyppi_77 dynamic cast gives you another pointer to the same object, or null, never allocates
user92578
Yeah, that's what I thought
@Tyyppi_77 I want to see how you're using dynamic cast, if you don't mind
user92578
// Checks if the prisoner has been freed.
if (dynamic_cast<CEntityPrisoner*>(m_TargetEntity)->GetFree())
{
	m_PrisonerState == EAIPrisonerState::ESCAPE;
}
@Tyyppi_77 so you know for sure that m_TargetEntity is a CEntityPrisoner ?
user92578
m_TargetEntity is a pointer to a entity character, that is passed to the AI class as the target entity
user92578
14:15
@MickLH Yeah, because the AI is only used for prisoners
I think you can use static_cast but I'm not sure
user92578
Using a wrong cast gives really annoying errors by the way
user92578
Had some of those before
dynamic_cast<> invokes RTTI
but the way you're using it, if the RTTI actually causes anything different to happen from static_cast<> it'll crash anyways
user92578
aight, static_cast it is
14:17
but I'm not sure if the compiler will figure out the polymorphism like that
user92578
it seems like the correct option anyways
god I hate C++ so much these days
like everything I get close to
If I know for sure it's the correct type, I'd also use a static_cast..
user92578
I have really started to love C++
user92578
I don't think I even could program without pointers anymore
14:19
Lol yeah... dem pointers doe
user92578
But I guess C# has it's references and stuff
Naw son not the same
user92578
Yeah
Java and c# use pointer, the language just manage it for you..
The art of parsing strings using a horrendously ugly char* is dying
user92578
14:20
std::string all the things!
Oh, derp
C++ rubs in my face that C is gone
user92578
To be honest I don't even know how to use char*s
while (*s && !isspace(*s)) *d++ = *s++;
just a random snippet lol, it copies a word until it reaches whitespace
aborts if it hits the end of the string
assumes *d has enough space :P
I really do like the future, and I want us to have nice things
But I miss that
Ugh it can't be that bad with std::string, I think it will go like this:
d += s.substr(0, s.find(' '));
user92578
that looks right to me
user92578
feels good that I understand your C++ code :D
14:28
lol last second edit
but it's way less robust now, it only works with space character instead of any whitespace character
Shitshithit. I was too greedy again. Shit. My super promising character is going to die. :(
and the constant factor is doubled on the Big O
@MickLH less row-bust?
@Lokkij oh no!
@Almo Did I tell you I'm stealing that?
you did tell me that
14:29
I'm calling my OODB engine RowBuster
then you didn't use it there
oh lol
:)
I'll give you credit for the name
heh ok thanks :)
he lives!
Holy shit!
Surprisingly, being banished to the abyss saved my life.
Also the decision to carry around that ring of poison resistance just in case.
:)
I dodges so many lethal attacks in those few turns.
:)
"hellephant" hahahah
14:35
Yeah :P
Now to find a way out.. the abyss is a pretty deadly place as well.
@Tyyppi_77 d += s.substr(0, s.find_first_of(" \t\n"));
Joe
Joe
@SpartanDonut, or anybody else for that matter do any CI? or Jenkins? with your .Net?
That task bothered me to read the manual about it again, had to share :P
user92578
haha
but it still has double constant factor
and you have to save that offset somewhere, and jank around with it later (Instead of leaving s at the end of the word)
user92578
14:39
Any of you guys use Sublime Text?
not me
Joe
Joe
@Tyyppi_77 ya not religiously but its on my radar
fast sturdy extendable text editor
user92578
everytime I open it a "package control readme" or something pops up, and it's really annoying
user92578
can I turn it off?
user92578
like the readme popping up
Joe
Joe
14:41
sublime 3? or 2
user92578
good question
user92578
probably 3
user92578
yeah it's 3
Joe
Joe
but from what i know... after you install a package with package control its supposed to pop up the readme
if your sublime is continuously trying to install something that sounds odd, a plugin could be busted
i might try package control: remove package then install package again
user92578
It pops this up every time:
user92578
14:43
user92578
maybe I should do what it tells me to do...
user92578
I never bothered to read it :D
lol that's their fault, everybody knows that only big red flashing text needs to be considered
user92578
yeah...
user92578
eating, brb
14:49
@Joe I don't think so. Technically I've dealt with automated builds / build servers but I don't know if it qualifies as CI
Joe
Joe
well ignoring CI, was it automation for C# / .Net stuff?
trying to see if this is worth playing with, where to start
@Sword I funneled all the exasperation and rage you so generously provided me on accident into this: drive.google.com/file/d/0BxOUlWYj0c6tOEtMWTU5bUIxNW8/view
Shit. Now I actually died. :(
@Joe it was just a build server that built / deployed the project (web site) every time it was checked into TFS
> Lokkij, Level 20 DrFi, blasted by a hellephant.
14:56
You'll probably get the most benefit if you have multiple team members and don't want to risk breaking builds, or if you have multiple platforms you want to target and your build servers / CI / whatever make sure builds don't break on other platforms
But having not done any of that before really I'm just pulling that out of my ass and someone should correct me if they know better :)
Joe
Joe
work is jumping on CI train pretty hard soon, never having touched it I wanted to see if i cant "Play" with some before we get there
thats all sounds like a bunch of awesome stuff
I think a big part of CI is automated testing as well so if you are already doing TDD I think CI being added should be more or less transparent to you
And I wouldn't worry about it
Joe
Joe
not worried interested!
YES
