man my cousin was in town from California... we did a last minute all nighter down in atlantic city but I now know how Danny Glover feels in lethal weapon

Have you guys played any of the Mother series games? There's a new one coming out this year made entirely by fans.
It has been in development for quite a long time, so you've probably heard about it.

Joe
@Jovito I haven't & haven't heard

Check it out, looks pretty awesome.

the composer of that emailed me the other week asking if I was looking for any music work done
his stuff sounds pretty rad
hopefully Nintendo doesn't do a cease and desist

yeah

Still can't blame them if they do

Still everyone will.

Nintendo has a reputation for being strict about how their stuff is used. I wouldn't count on them letting anything go.

IP law is the worst.

Pokemon Planet is ranked #6 on IndieDB, came out in October supposedly
http://www.indiedb.com/games/pokemon-planet
still standing

I mean, it's totally their right, but it's still annoying

It's not their right... it's really their obligation
There are potential negative repercussions if they don't

I remember a thing from Nintendo saying they take each thing on a case by case basis
they see some value in certain fan-made things

Riot is cool. They're just like "if you use our stuff, then other people can use your stuff, as long as they make significant changes to it" and that's about all there is to it
oh yeah, and no asking for payment, unless it's through ad revenue

Having publicly available rules on derivative works would be a good idea. Unfortunately most default to "you can't unless you get explicit permission"

12:21 AM
actually I misread the first half...
if you use their stuff, then they can use your stuff, but 3rd parties can't

Joe
unbeknownst to you, you are infact an unpaid employee of riot lol

Wheel of Fortune (X) is the tenth trump or Major Arcana card in most Tarot decks. It is used in game playing as well as in divination. == Description == To the right is the Wheel Of Fortune card from the A. E. Waite tarot deck. A. E. Waite was a key figure in the development of the Tarot in line with the Hermetic magical-religious system which was also being developed at the time, and this deck, as well as being in common use today, also forms the basis for a number of other modern tarot decks. Whats a use case for the #ifdef _DEBUG? I can't think of any cases where you would need one.

Pip
@Tyyppi_77 when you're debugging :D
Basically code surrounded with a #ifdef will only be part of the compiled executable if the term (in this case _DEBUG) is defined.

Java is easy (but annoying to deal with)

i don't know java I couldn't honestly comment

1:09 PM
@Almo ubisoft use which language?

depends on the project
usually C++

have they opted for Java ever?

I think scripting for FarCry was LUA, but that's CryEngine, and it may be because of that.
not that I'm aware of
I can't think of any reason to write a console game in java
and a few why you wouldn't

But it would be one of the best deals for android , right?

android users don't pay
droid aps make 5-10% the revenue of their iOS equivalents (so I have heard from several developers)
and Ubi doesn't make phone/tablet games much (if at all)

1:12 PM
ohhh huge gap..
yes they do
Battle Of heroes

@Sword why would you opt for a language completely inefficient for making games?
I mean
You can bash two sticks together and make minecraft
But that runs horribly

Most of the tutorials were using Java for android

Is Java really that bad for game dev or are we all just saying things based on the way things used to be?
I'm not knowledgeable on languages at a technical level but, for example, what makes C# a better language for game development than Java from a performance perspective?

@Sword well yes, because java is the main thing that runs on java
You can go to the native sdk, but even then you'd need a java wrapper IIRC

@KevinvanderVelden Is Java to programming languages for games as Internet Explorer is to browsers??

1:15 PM
@Sword no
Because programmers are generally smarter than that
Oh, to your new question: no not really, the problem is that java is designed for a thing and that thing is not making games
IE is designed for displaying webpages, it's just also really good at serving exploits and errors

could anyone link me to creating multiple sprites using arrays in Java.. I guess I'm stuck with that part.. :(
I've got one in mind, kilobolt.. I guess he spawns multiple sprites.. how could i forget..

Creating multiple sprites using arrays?
Do you want Sprite[]?

yes, for example I want a sprite to spawn after a certain interval. So I keep adding those sprites in an array and update their behaviour in a for loop
@KevinvanderVelden yes

Sprites do not spawn
Sprites are rendered
An entity can spawn, and it can point to a sprite to be rendered

sprites/enemies XD

1:20 PM
Different thing

i think I'm doing it horribly

A sprite is a bunch of pixels

enemySpriteList = new Array<Texture>(10);

They have no position so rendering them would always be at 0,0

user92578
Y U no classes? :D

1:20 PM
I am using classes!!!

user92578
well entity classes

yes
One for main character

Note: While I agree the use of "structure of arrays" over "array of structures" can lead to an improvement in performance. This does not really apply in languages like java

One for Enemies

user92578
so why are you not storing those in an array?

1:22 PM
@Tyyppi_77 this

user92578
does not answer to the question "why?"

Yes I am , but I am confused on how to store them

@Sword a texture is not an enemy
A texture is a description of what you render
An enemy has a texture, it also has position, ai, health, weapons, etc

and a badass Laugh..

Plausible

1:24 PM
i think the soniss package should have that

All things a texture does not have
It should
It definitely should
After all, what game is complete without a good evil laugh?

Yeah but texture will eventually be stored as a sprite. mySprite = new Sprite(texture);
gtg , will be back in 20 mins.. I just have a couple of doubts on how to store them.. Java is confusing me.. was so easy in python :(

@Sword it's no different in java than in python
Not a single difference
You just type different things, maybe

Pip
@Chris oh man, you're fuckin' game :D
It started fullscreen on the wrong screen
might have something to do with the fact that it's on the right side

Morning @Joe

Pip
morning Joe

user92578
morning

user92578
stupid philosophy question of the day: Why do we have two different sizes of letters to use? Why not just one? Why not three? Four?

user92578
like the romans only used capital letters

if you look at a bunch of text like this that mentions your name tyyppi, it isn't noticalbe. and when the next sentence starts, it's not so noticalble
But, Tyypi, when you use some caps, these things are more noticable. See how that works?

user92578
1:33 PM
yeah

user92578
so is it purely for making reading easier?

user92578
and why don't we have letters for semi-noticable stuff?

user92578
or really really noticable stuff?

like italics and bold ?

user92578
these are the things I spend my showering sessions thinking about

1:35 PM
Those aren't really letters

user92578
right

But it's for emphasis
among other things

@Tyyppi_77 also take a look at a good book about typography, it may sound boring as hell but Bringhurst's "The Elements of Typographic Style" is a really good read
It will show you lots about where the different letter families come from and how they evolved

Pip
huh, that's interesting

user92578
1:40 PM
yeah, thanks for the answers guys

@Tyyppi_77 sure any time

Also: there are 3 types of case in general use: Upper case, lower case and small caps (which is upper case letters scaled to lower case size)

@KevinvanderVelden they are not just scaled, that would look crappy for most fonts. They are a completely different design
the small caps, that is

1:47 PM
Eh true, close enough =p

back..
I have a texture atlas , and 3 enemy images in them
So for the sake of simplicity , lets just load only 1 image and create various instances of it so that each object is added in the array after a specific interval

No
Why are you duplicating the image?
You don't need to duplicate the image, you just need to have your Enemy class have a reference to it

to create multiple enemies who look the same

You don't need to duplicate the image for that

You mean load the texture and sprite once , then keep on adding it into the array?
have a look at this. This is a game in python .. check line 266, i'm going to use a similar logic ..codeskulptor.org/#user33_SI1Z3fqlN7_4.py
and line 326 as well..

1:57 PM
No
Don't add it to an array
Make an enemy class, add that to an array
@Sword at work, not doing that

class Enemy
{
	Sprite sprite;
	public Enemy(Sprite spriteToUse)
	{
		sprite = spriteToUse;
	}
}

void Main()
{
	Sprite enemySprite = new Sprite("/path/to/sprite");
	Enemy enemy1 = new Enemy(enemySprite);
	Enemy enemy2 = new Enemy(enemySprite);
	Enemy enemy3 = new Enemy(enemySprite);
}
Some pseudocode for ya

ohh thanks,... but what if i need one to spawn after the timer runs out?
This spawns a limited number of enemies , right?

user92578
what?

user92578
just add a new one

user92578
array.Add(new Enemy(enemySprite));

1:59 PM
@Sword yes, it spawns 3 enemies
Because that is what it does
