I am currently preparing students for technical interviews (maths interviews to enter university), where they will have to solve a problem without any preparation in front of the interviewer. To avoid long silences in the conversation, I recommend them to speak by sharing their ideas and feelings, and reformulate the question/problem/given information. The benefit is that, if you misunderstood something, the other person can immediately correct you and you can continue your reasoning with updated, accurate information. —
