I'm not sure how it works, but if you wish, you could just "re-star" after unpin

I guess there is limited number of times the same user can add and remove stars on the same message.
Let's test this. I will pin this message, then click on "cancel stars". Will I be able to star/pin it again?
No, I got the error message: "You have already voted, but the voting has been cleared by a moderator."
I get the same error message if I star/unstar a message by another user and try to star it again.

Now your post above was starred by me.
When I click the little arrow on the left, I have as one of the possibilities: "unstar as interesting". This can also be done from transcript (in this way it's different from "cancel stars".)
As you can see, I have removed star from your previous message.
@MartinSleziak I didn't say you can't star other users' messages. Try starring your own. =)
Then try pinning your own and unpinning while not unstarring. =)
@user21820 Yes. that's the way room owners can star their own messages, I know that.
So in the case you and SBA were talking about, I had unpinned my own message, so I couldn't possibly keep it starred.
Unless there's some way I don't know of.
@user21820 If you choose "cancel stars" instead of "unpin" on your own message, then the star does not remain.
I clicked "unpin" not "cancel stars".

Ok once again. Look at this message: I will star it exactly in the way you described.
You see that it's starred, right?
"Unpin" changes it from pinned to starred.
Yes I do; that's very strange because I definitely didn't click "cancel stars". Let me try again and see.
That's the reason why star remained. I now removed the star (by clicking on "cancel stars") from this message: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/39390191#39390191
If I understand correctly that was your intention - since the post has been dealt with, the message about that specific post needs to be neither starred nor pinned.
For example, this message by SBA is pinned now, the post was deleted already. 1) Clicking "unpin" will leave the star (but it will be no longer pinned). 2) Clicking "cancel stars" will also remove the star completely. (So it will not be shown among starred messages.)
I thought that 2) is the thing to do. (This can be done only by a room owner; it does not matter whether they are also poster of that message.)
Okay I figured out what happened...
I used the greasemonkey script I mentioned to you earlier on the full transcript. It only had one option: "unpin/cancel star".
Clicking that removed both the pin and the star.
I'm not sure about that, but you can check when you use the script next time.
I also tried unpinning from the side-bar; it does exactly as you said.

23 messages moved from C.R.U.D.E.
Okay I misread your original message. I thought you meant that I had unstarred as well as unpinned (which I infer from what you said later that I didn't), and hence I went to find out how that could happen. Indeed I had tested and found that the GM script does just that. However, I had no particular reason to leave the messages starred; I had just clicked "unpinned" to 'undo' my original action of "pin", and I didn't realize that there weren't inverses...
Haha!

Moral of the story: I should try to read more carefully...
