@doppelgreener They'll hunt you and force you to reinstall!
No one is safe in the Windows 10 land!

12:40 PM
Hello

12:52 PM
@doppelgreener o/

o/
Good afternoon from sunny London!

Wait, hold on... I gotta leave. i'll be back

Ttfn!

nwp
Wikipedia indicates doppelgreener is playing in the mud :D

:D
I live in the UK
and one of my parents is British
so the grand tradition of the usage of TTFN was passed down to me

1:43 PM
@doppelgreener :P

2:20 PM
o/
am I alone here :(

@TheMaskedRebel That's the question about life.

hey @AlexandreVaillancourt

Hey @FreezePhoenix
@AlexandreVaillancourt how are you

This coffee is making me happy, even if it's not the best ever.
And you?

2:29 PM
@AlexandreVaillancourt pretty well, thank you

@AlexandreVaillancourt any secrets to the coffee?

@Pikalek No, it's just the transition of not having coffee to having coffee :P

@AlexandreVaillancourt That's still something appreciable. Working into my first full cup of the day.
@NaCl did you come to give us a solution or to participate?

2:46 PM
@Pikalek The first of how many?

@AlexandreVaillancourt I start with a 1/4 mug just to make sure I didn't mess it up. Depending on how generous my spouse, I unusual clock a 1.5 mugs. I think in terms of measurements it's about 4 liquid cups.
The problem with making coffee is I need coffee in order to trust my ability to make coffee.

@Pikalek Solution to what?

@NaCl they were chemistry puns
@NaCl as in "you are either part of the solution or part of the participate"

@Pikalek In what ways can you mess it up?

2:54 PM
To me, the recipe is quite standard, but I guess the ritual can vary from one coffee fan to another!

I'm not at all into chemistry

@AlexandreVaillancourt Sometimes my blend of beans is off. And my scale isn't very precise, soo sometimes the beans to water ratio is a bit off. Very rarely I roast my own beans and get them too dark (cough burns them cough) - I usually am willing to drink such mistakes but don't like to inflict them on others & would rebrew the pot if needed.
@AlexandreVaillancourt It's a bit like ECC RAM - it's probably overkill.
@NaCl Ahh, well then they probably weren't as funny - assuming they had measurable humor to begin with.

@Pikalek Oh, ok, wow! Doing all of this, I'd say that's luxury!

@AlexandreVaillancourt Thanks! I enjoy the process.

3:10 PM
It never came to my mind that one would roast the beans at home. How do you do it?

user4704
Stick 'em in the oven.

user4704
Roast at 425 for about thirteen minutes.

Usually in the oven. I preheat to somewhere between 350-400 F, put them in for a bit & then switch to the broiler.
I've also done them on the grill - I like the flavor of that better & it keeps the chaff outside, but it's really easy to burn them.

user4704
Huh, I was joking.

I've heard of people using air popcorn poppers, but haven't tried that one yet.

user4704
3:15 PM
I usually see people around here with specialized roasters, typically ones that can vent out a window.

Yeah, you can get really into it if you have the time money & patience.

Does anyone want to play a game.

user4704
How about a nice game of chess?

I'm sure you get a more consistent result using specialized roasters. I only dabble, so the oven technique is good enough for me. Also, it makes my house smell awesome.
I was going to propose a game of thermonuclear war.

user4704
I'm glad somebody got that.

user4704
3:19 PM
I suspect Rebel is too young.

user4704
(The roasters and outside-venting are, I suspect, to avoid making the whole house smell like roasted coffee which not everybody likes.)

user4704
My wife barely tolerates the aroma of the beans I grind, and that is mainly because I prefer fairly light roasts. I ground up some super dark, cheapo beans my father left here a week or two ago and she was displeased.

nwp
We should all steal gun hero from @Tyyppi_77, organize a blind race, have comments from the creator and stream it on twitch.
It'll be glorious.

@JoshPetrie It a strange game. The only winning move is not to play.

Oh, well using the oven during the summer is a no no :P
(here, at least).

3:25 PM
@TheMaskedRebel I'm presently playing a game of - "guess what past me was thinking when this got coded."

But maybe I'll try that this winter, I find that the beans are never roasted enough.

@AlexandreVaillancourt yeah, I tend to roast in the fall & winter
Some places that roast their own will sell you unroasted (green) beans.
They usually cost less (less labor) & if you keep them dry, last for next to ever.

Yeah, that's a great project for this fall!

It is! I started by 'tuning up' already lightly roasted beans & worked my way up from that.
With pre-roasted beans you don't have to worry about chaff either, which can be a bit of a hassle.
When I roast green beans, when they're done, I take them out to the deck & pour them back & forth between two pans to let the chaff blow off & to cool them a bit.
Huh, make $85k a year as a ninja. npr.org/sections/money/2018/07/16/629586025/…
Maybe the ninja wouldn't be so depopulated if they weren't so deadly?

nwp
@Pikalek They break the link when you decline to sell your soul.
At least now you have an option to decline but still.

3:36 PM
@Pikalek I have issues distinguishing the taste of the bean from the roast that has been applied to it. Maybe that's what I'll do to get used to doing it.

@AlexandreVaillancourt Getting a single source bean may help with that. I.E, get two different roasts sourced from the same place. The bean itself has a flavor profile - holding those variables constant might help you establish what's going on as you adjust the roast.

@Pikalek Yeah!

user4704
@Bálint Pro. Which makes that much more annoying.

3:54 PM
@JoshPetrie Yeah, that sucks

user4704
My best guess was that something in Microsoft's terrible "Microsoft Account" system was wedged and it was trying to restore a sync of some settings from an old machine or an old copy of the machine.

user4704
But unfortunately the issues persists even when I have (a) never signed in to a MS account in the OS since a clean reinstall and (b) deleted all my MS accounts.

user4704
So who knows.

user92578
4:37 PM
@nwp oh no

nwp
Oh no stealing or oh no commenting or oh no everything?

@Tyyppi_77 o/

user92578
stealing i guess? tbh i sort of feel like i missed the entire point of your initial message

user92578
Hey rebel

nwp
It belongs to this but there is so much coffee in between.

user92578
4:40 PM
hmm okay

@Tyyppi_77 how is your training going

user92578
today was an easier day, but i am bracing myself for thursday, long walk ahead in heavy gear in death heat

user92578
Just three mornings left though, and tomorrow is my birthday

@Tyyppi_77 You will survive. Period. Courtesy of the GameDev chat Regulars

@Almo yeah. Candy Crush's success seems mostly due the untold billions King games spent promoting it. (I was looking at their numbers before they got acquired, and it seemed like they were probably spending well in excess of 50% of their revenues on user acquisition/retention. Success by brute force.)
@Bálint pulled the trigger last night--randomly heard about "Prime day" leading to discounts across the e-commerce world, and CyberPower was offering >$500 off of some pretty decent gaming systems
@Pikalek I'm too lazy to roast my own, but having lived across from a roasting cafe for years, I can validate that nothing compares to fresh roasted beans!

5:00 PM
leaving gamedev...

5:24 PM
Does anyone know of some demos of lwjgl3 with swing. Google doesn't help.

Doesn't look like something you want to do, according to a quick google search

When you ask a question put a question mark please.

does anyone actually use swing anymore?

user92578
^

yes almo, me

user92578
5:29 PM
lol

user92578
AFAIK it's not really trivial to render OpenGL and some other stuff in to the same window

@Tyyppi_77 OK, but I need to do it.

Still have this one iusse... im sending my "play_animation" attack... the player receives it and plays the animation... at the same time the health is subtracted from the entity... As i dont send any packet by myself to substract the entity health... i cannot delay it. My server api sends automaticly those updates variables...how do professional games handle this ?

@FreezePhoenix Except if the question mark button has fallen off my computer??

Futhermore every animation got a different length... ( 2 sec.. 1.2 sec... )

5:34 PM
@TheMaskedRebel No. I don't care. Learn the unicode value if the question mark.

@genaray add a timer before you send the second packet?

well you mean before i update the entity health ?

Why is your animation tied to the removal of health?

user92578
@TheMaskedRebel so then figure it out, someone suggested copying the framebuffer

In what "play_animation" implies "remove_health"?

5:37 PM
To synchronize it... when the animation is finished, the health should be removed... otherwise it looks so strange ( player doesnt even begin with the anim and the entity is already dead for example )

@Tyyppi_77 I think I'm going to have them on seperate windows

The client only receives the "play_anim" package. When he receives it, he starts the anim

Then when the client receives the "play_animation", put the "health removal" part in a kind of queue that processes events based on time, play the animation and at each frame, check if it's time to remove_health?
(and play the animation right away)

user92578
I just tag animation frames/keyframes

thats good... but here comes the generic problem... how could i implement that, when this package isnt only received by players ? Without writing dozends of if cases to search the right animation for the right player/entity which is attacking ?

5:43 PM
Yeah, that's another way to do it. It's a way to play sounds along an animation.
Hold on
@genaray
// With attackPacket
//  attackPacket.PlayerAttacking
//  attackPacket.TargetEntity
//  attackPacket.AttackAnimationId
//  attackPacket.DamageDealt

onPacketReception( attackPacket ):
  playerAttacking = players.find( attackPacket.PlayerAttacking )
  playerAttacking.startAnimation( attackPacket.AttackAnimationId )

  animationData = animations.find( attackPacket.AttackAnimationId )

  healtRemovalEvent = {
    attackPacket.TargetEntity,
    attackPacket.DamageDealt }

  g_eventQueue.queueEvent( healtRemovalEvent, now() + animationData.delayBeforeHealtRemoval )

6:09 PM
Just had dinner... sorry for my late reply. Well that seems to work thanks :) Meanwhile i also thought about just sending the attack animation duration to the server... and than just start a delay with the certain duration... but i have no idea if that is safe

@genaray The server should be aware of all of this :)
Have you played Diablo III?

No but i saw gameplay ^^
@AlexandreVaillancourt Well... than there should be a table for valid player animations with the specific durations. Thats more work, but it could also work :)

The thing I noticed is that when I was suffering some bad lag or server disconnection, I could still start attacks. The player asks for an attack, the game is like "ok" and starts the animation, during that animation start time, the client sends the attack request to the server, and the server acknowledges it, allowing the "real" attack animation to take place.
I would not be surprised that the server sends the damage dealt just when the damage is actually applied.
So your idea of having the server send the damage after the duration of the animation is not a bad idea either: instead of having the server send the animation_id and the damage_dealt, and letting the client delay the damage, you do that on the server.
This allows you to "cancel" the attack in between, in the case the entity is already dead by the "damage applied" time, or if the entity started an escape maneuver.

@TheMaskedRebel Why do you need to do it.

@AlexandreVaillancourt Well ... maybe its also pretty safe... players could probably change the animation id or the duration of the animation. But that wouldnt effect the result. It would just faster update the entity variables but thats all, the attack "speed" stays the same ^^

6:19 PM
One client asked if we could change Kraken, our backend server software suite to use SQL instead of Dynamo as its database. it's like, well, yeah I suppose. But it would take a full team a year to make the change. There's such a massive difference between the way the two DBs work that it would require a whole fuckton of work to redo it.
Just because something is "possible" doesn't mean it's worth jumping through all those hoops to make it happen

@genaray Yeah, the more stuff the server controls, the safer your game will be.

6:31 PM
Btw... is it better to create one large table for animations ? Or multiple small ones ( one for combat anims, one for ... dances for example.. )

@genaray What advantages do you see with one over the other?
one vs many?

7:00 PM
Well... honestly one does have some advantages... because you just need to manage one instead of many... but it could lead to some problems as well.

There you go: if you don't see a problem with the simple solution, use it first :)
Is this clean:
  if(col.gameObject.tag == "beam") {
    Destroy(col.gameObject);
  }

  if(col.gameObject.tag == "beam") {
    timesHit += 1;
    GameObject smokePuff = Instantiate (
      bulletHitParticle,
      transform.position,
      Quaternion.identity) as GameObject;
  }

user4704
Why two if()s checking the same thing?

user4704
Is it safe to use gameObject after you Destroy() it?

user4704
It doesn't seem worthwhile to bother with "GameObject smokePuff" since it leaves scope immediately.

user4704
(so the as cast is also useless)

user4704
7:13 PM
Seems like it could be:

user4704
if(col.gameObject.tag == "beam") {timesHit += 1; Instantiate(...) ; Destroy(col.gameObject); }

c.f. this answer. It's odd for not coming from Unity to see an object being used after the request to destroy it.

user4704
Destroy() probably does a deferred delete so it's probably safe, but I'd still like to see it at the end of the references to the game object, stylistically.

@JoshPetrie Yep, that's what I think too. According to the doc, it seems that it will remove it at a later time, but before the next render.

8:01 PM
Hello!

How are you?

Good! tired a bit. And you?

Good. Got some user moderation cultivating done.
I feel protective of some chat users from some reason.

:)
I installed subversion on a CentOS VM a couple of months ago. I followed our internal procedure, and I'm quite certain that I updated it, somehow. But I can't find that updated procedure, so I kind of think now that I did not improve the procedure and that I'll have to figure out the issues the internal had once more...
I kind of feel dumb now. Not helping my future self...

8:31 PM
oh no, I missed the coffee discussion! Anyone know if you can use a gas BBQ grill or does that not heat evenly enough?
trying to avoid the "whole apartment smells like burnt bean" problem

8:44 PM
@Jimmy Hello!
@doppelgreener Hello!

hi

How are you doing?

alright, got stuck on my projects for a bit, so just doing some thinking
