6:04 AM
@UriPopov you could just add more samples

6:59 AM
Hello is anyone here
I want to try game development but have very little programming knowledge.
I considered learning Javascript but havent begun.
Should I learn javascript and Unity or something else? or c sharp?

user92578
7:45 AM
@KingTut unityscript (unitys scripting language that is somewhat similar to javascript) is slowly being deprecated so I'd recommend using C#

8:06 AM
@Tyyppi_77 What language u use and please can you show me a guide to beginning?

user92578
I use C++ with SDL2 but I'd suggest starting out with Unity

I saw your website, pretty cool stuff.

user92578
thanks

@Tyyppi_77 Actually I had tried sfml with c++ but didnt go much further

user92578
what did you get stuck with?

8:08 AM
@Tyy Actually firstly I wasnt very sincere due to school and other stuff
And also
I had to follow a long process to create a sfml project in Visual studio
For every new project, i had to create sfml project on visual studio and do a hell lot of configuration
@Ty Tell me is steam paid or free

user92578
what?

user92578
It costs to get in if that's what you're asking

i mean If I need to put a game on that site

user92578
I went through Greenlight which required people to vote for the game, but nowadays you can just give Valve 100$ and you're in

Thats too much

user92578
8:12 AM
I think you get that money back if you sell enough

So what platforms are needed to get the game there
I mean any platform?

user92578
Yeah I don't think it's required for the game run on multiple platforms, however from what I've heard from a lot of devs is that the percentage of Mac & Linux users don't really justify the time you put into making those builds

user92578
Majority of Steam users are on Windows

@Tyy ok last question how much time will it require to learn programming and making simple to medium game if I be sincere, regular
And one lasst question why you chose SDL

user92578
totally depends on the game & framework, you might have something simple working in a month or so, but I worked on GunHero for 2.5 years before release, and I had programmed for 3-4 years before that.

user92578
8:18 AM
I chose SDL because it's API is similar to that of Pygame's which is what I started with when I started programming

user92578
I would probably choose SFML over it if I were to redecide now though, since SDL's renderer is quite limited

Thanks a lot for comments! I learnt c++ in past times, our school only has theory subject like literature, history, sciences. no computer related fields. i felt the language was very confusing after a while, so i started to forget it and decide to learn somethng else

user92578
C++ isn't a great beginners language

@tyyppi So sfml is a library, can it be used to create 3d games?

user92578
Yes if you use SFML just for windowing & input and use OpenGL for rendering

user92578
8:22 AM
SFML provides its own renderer but it's only for 2D

@Tyyppi_77 see in this video, everytime I had to do this to create a project of sfml
Is there no way around this

user92578
that's not a lot of work

user92578
you can also make template projects in VS which saves those configurations and allows you to make new projects a lot faster

user92578
however I'm not really sure why you'd have to make so many new projects?

@Tyyppi_77 I was following a book. something about sfml, so I started to create new project in each new chapter. Oh I see that was the foolish thing I was doing
@Tyyppi_77 So we create one project and work within it.
But the author was showing different program samples in each example.
So I created new projects for them

user92578
8:30 AM
that's fine too

No not really, you are right, isnt it better to make one project and delete its content, and put new example of author in it to check it

user92578
deleting content doesn't make a lot of sense necessarily

yeah thats true.. Thanks a lot for important advice!
@Tyy So should I continue with sfml or go to the c sharp and unity

user92578
I'd suggest trying out Unity and making the decision based on what feels better to you

8:50 AM
@Tyyppi_77 it already is
@Tyyppi_77 do you know how that's done? I couldn't find much on the internet

user92578
Project -> Export Template

Oh that uhhhh
That was unexpected.. didn't even notice it :P thx

4 hours later…
user92578
12:52 PM

user92578
I'm working on a drop down menu item, needed for replacing the tabs on smaller screens plus I'll probably use this for sorting the workshop items in the browser

1:30 PM
cool stuff @Tyyppi_77

It seems I'm dropping on my ranking from pointlesssites.com/slightly-interesting.asp
And that seems to be affecting my traffic. Interesting...

I did not even know this was a thing

It apparently is... And I've gotten a pretty steady amount of traffic from the site.

1:47 PM
the internet is a weird place
3

2:39 PM
I'm going to work on translations for my site, with assistance. The new site manager I'm using should make for fairly easy site translations.

@PearsonArtPhoto What website do you have on Pointlesssites? Could I check it out. I like pointless stuff. :)

dude thats cool

user92578
text alignment looks weird

i like this

user92578
2:47 PM
the text at the bottom is indented differently from the text at the top?

Yeah, I'm working on it.
I'm going to re-design the whole site using a standard package soon.

So its not in the earths orbit but the suns? Can an object like a car get pulled into to mars orbit?
Im not a science guy so excuse my ignorance

Nope without some amazing luck.

the image is broken for me

but its not orbiting the earth? I would think it would orbit the earth

2:50 PM
So it is... Strange.

Roadster_Earth 404s

I would imagine it would behave like a satalite

lambparade if you launch anything fast enough, it will leave Earth

It is now fixed.

all orbits have an "escape velocity" which lets you escape the gravitational well of an object

2:52 PM
Silly me... Sigh.
I think I accidentally deleted that image when I re-arranged a good bit of the site. Been that way for a few days...

I surpised they gave it so much power to escape velcity

I even noticed it last night, but I didn't pay enough attention to it...

I need to play more kerbal space program

It was part of the test of it.
They wanted to demonstrate that payload it could carry to Mars.

oh i see
thats interesting

2:53 PM
And actually the true payload to Mars is quite a bit higher.
They aren't actually going to Mars, but they demonstrated they could, if they launched at the right time.

well, if you're okay with a 2-year flight, it's doable with the current trajectory :)

They could have done it sooner, but yea, it will be fairly close in 2 years.
And a bit of tweaking could make it closer.
I'm also working on a KSP series where I talk about the fact and fiction of KSP, youtube.com/c/whereisroadster

2 hours later…
4:59 PM
@Tyyppi_77 niiice! :D that looks really good!

user92578
thanks! it's really awesome how much polish just a few interpolations can add

You really need to reach out and do a bit of marketing. I bet you could have pretty solid sales if you reach out to the right people.

user92578
probably true yeah, just would have to find out the right people

6:42 PM
Do people do lighting effects with shaders?

6:56 PM
yes
some exceptoins apply - you could do approximations of some lighting effects without shaders, like drawing full-screen masks with a blending mode,
some effects may be done by a shader based on parameters of the objects's surface and materials and some effects are done in screen space

3 hours later…
9:38 PM
maaan cloth is harder that I originally thought

I just wanted to create a Rocket-league like model, to test some mechanics in Unity :D
the result doesn't look too bad imo

not bad

10:32 PM
awesome, what a difference :D

10:44 PM
nice
