The more I work on this project, the more it looks like Elder Scrolls Arena.

TIL I can tell chrome to throttle the upload speed as to not clog the entire house's connection.
dev tools (F12) -> Network -> Network throttling -> Add...
then create a speed limit, close, select speed limit.

1:33 AM
@TheMattbat999 My net connection was clogged by a 1GB YT upload :P Still is, kind of. Chrome's throttling works but it's not fine-grained so it bursts then pause, then bursts again...
-> *crickets*
I essentially fell off the net :P

@StephaneHockenhull ahh... that sucks

2 hours later…
4:02 AM
Anyone around?

not me

Ever seen Bad Apple!! the Touhou music video ?

i have not

aw
I crunched the entire 3 minutes 37 seconds video into 221KB and wrote a playback routine for Arduino that bit-bangs the video signal out in software :D

4 hours later…
8:28 AM
Uhm, do you guys remember that question about the legal state of city names?
We should probably rethink the answer

1 hour later…
9:41 AM
@Bálint Yeah I was watching the same video. Thanks. :)

1 hour later…

10:44 AM
@Bálint I'm not sure how to read this. I remember that there is a law that says it is illegal to use the acronym FBI in the USA. What the law meant is that it is illegal to mis-use the acronym FBI. Wearing a cap saying FBI or just talking about the FBI is fine. Founding the Furry Bunny Interests club and then knocking on people's doors saying you are an FBI agent is not legal.
So there is a chance that using Sarajevo in a game is totally fine. You just can't make a bus tour to Sarajevo which happens to be the name of the sandcastle in your backyard. Unless your backyard is in Sarajevo I guess.

Still no deposit of my "Free" bitcoins. They claim it will happen eventually, but... I'll believe it when I see it.

nwp
1:12 PM
It might make sense for them to actually do it. Once they give you a tiny bit of bitcoins you will send them a ton of bitcoins back. The problem is they don't know that.

In fairness, they do say that it takes a while for them to process, unless you pay them large sums of bitcoins.

nwp
Sure. For the small fee of 10 bc I'll send you your 1 bc that you just won immediately :P
In all honesty it is clear that it is a scamming site. I don't know why you spend more time than the initial amusement on it.

Yeah, I realize that.
But hey, if I can cause the scamming site to lose money...

nwp
If you have fun with that you could join the 419-eaters.

^ This is great
Check his channel out
There's a series called scamalot where he does it more

Yeah, I've seen it.
But this one was the best, by far.

Mary Gary was the best IMO

@UriPopov at least she has shoes now.

Bitcoin transaction fee is around $1

8:14 PM
@UriPopov looking awesome

If cloudminer works, then it's basically the real world version of an idle game
You wait a bit to get enough money to upgrade, you upgrade
Rinse and repeat

8:32 PM
The cost for one of the tiers pays itself back in about 3 days
gotta be ponzi
or they just run off with it if you pay one of the higher tiers
UNLESS they make enough from unknown browser mining to pay everyone
but that seems unlikely to me

I presumably have 0.00028 bitcoins already
1.5 days until I can check if it works

9:00 PM
Does it make sense to have mithril depicted as a green metal?

nwp
9:47 PM
@TheMattbat999 Wiki says it is supposed to look like silver, so I guess not.

@TheMattbat999 not really

9:59 PM
@nwp I mainly just wanted that so that it looks different from Steel and Silver equipment. Plus, I had seen it depicted as a green metal before in Terreria.

nwp
Maybe make it white. Or just make it green like you want. People are more likely to complain that all the things look the same than that they are not consistent with Tolkien.

Aight. Next question: how large would an MMORPG / One Player RPG size be without it feeling to small/big.
Just in y'alls opinion.

really depends on the focus
Disgaea has zero travelling. you just pick battles from a menu
but it focuses on tactical combat
woa
one of my answers hit HNQ
+180 today

nwp
@TheMattbat999 What do you mean? The size of the world? The play time?

Kinda like Elder Scrolls. Do what you want. You can also form clans and fight other clans. Or simply be a dungeon exploring team. Or go solo. Or be a merchant instead.
@nwp size of the world.

nwp
10:07 PM
I don't think there is such a thing as too big for an Elder Scrolls game, unless you hit the limits of modern computers.
Ignoring content is easy.

Depends on the travel system

@nwp Ok. Just didn't want to make an overly sized world where it takes forever to explore it.

EVE-Online is pretty huge, but with warp drives it's no big deal

@Almo fast travel through special, set locations. Also may taje mounts instead.
Well, what I mean by "set locations" is quite literal wells that you hop into and either teleport to another well you discovered or a random one if you want somewhere new to go to.

nwp
That might lead to "well hopping" until you end up where you want to go or discovered all of them. Not sure if that is a good idea.

10:20 PM
@nwp As someone who played through the 3 new elder scrolls game + arena and got out of the dungeon in daggerfall on the 5th try, I think smaller maps are better, because you can simply just walk from A to B in a short time
You don't have a drive to explore the world in Arena and Daggerfall, because it's mostly repetitive, boring and simply too big to do anything productive

nwp
I'd say the problem here is that the world is boring, not that it is big.

Huge and detailed rarely go together

@Bálint well it isn't like that kinda scale, my estimated size is about 15 times the scale of Skyrim.

On one side or in area?
And is it procedural?

@Bálint no it will be hand made, and that will be about the whole game world

10:35 PM
Great

nwp
Will it come including the full 10TB hard drive?

You don't need to have a huge hard drive to store a relatively detailed terrain

@nwp Terrabyte?

nwp
No offense, but this sounds like a but can you make pong situation.

A heightmap of a size 15 times larger than skyrim with a data point at every 1 meter (~1.09 yard) would weigh about 2GB
Sure, you need to add the details onto it, but that can be copied

10:52 PM
@Bálint I actually thought about making a bunch of terrain chunks with a 3d modeling program instead of fooling with Unity's terrain system. Opinion?

11:04 PM
@nwp I understand where you are coming from. I really don't plan on finishing this any time soon and I sure don't plan on this being my first game I finish. I have been working on little side projects here and there to help myself learn more and more about developing games (funny you should use Pong as an example, that was my second side project I did!) I really did come into programming I was just gonna do it right off the bat, but I learned over time I need to learn some more first!

nwp
I would suggest not to focus on "15 times bigger than skyrim" and instead let the game slowly grow. And to take shortcuts for things you don't care deeply about.

@TheMattbat999 Yeah, Don't
You can leave Unity,'s system out, but definitely don't do it in a modelling program.
It's not optimized

nwp
That said it probably still is a worthwhile project. It probably gets abandoned, but you will have learned a ton. And there is a chance that it does against all odds become playable.

A model needs around 15-20 bytes per vertex
A heightmap only needs 4

nwp
I don't think this will make or break the game.
Go for the easy option, optimize later.

11:17 PM
@Bálint ok
On the heightmap thing, it isn't really about how easy it is, it is just because Unity's terrain causes sever lag when you detail it and add a Navmesh system to it. I actually attempted this project on a small scale, and it ran at 4 frames a second.

We were happy to get 0.5 FPS back in the days
there's even a meter showing how far along it is drawing each frame

Ah... glad tech has improved over the years!

:D
