00:00 - 19:0019:00 - 00:00

7:00 PM
does somebody have an opportunity to help me out with an 2D animation problem?

I think coding is funnier than lead, or not?

"funny" is "hahahah that's funny" you mean "more fun"
:)
anyway, I prefer being lead.

I think that if you code for a few years it becomes boring

not everybody does
depends
like I said Benoit has been a senior programmer for a decade or more, and wouldn't want to stop

and what about his salary?
does it as big as team lead has?

7:02 PM
I know one guy who's been a senior for a long time, and doesn't even need a job because he's got so much dough already. he just like programming, and likes the env at his place of work

oh!

I have a css question

it so unusual
there are different people

really just depends on the person
i gotta go to the store, need to get food before everything closes tomorrow

I know some people who work as programmers for more than five years and still are not able to buy a nice pair of shoes
@Almo have a good time
@UriPopov what is your question?

7:04 PM
How is working in a team? How do you work in your team?

@Almo oh snap, you're right!
@Curio Working in a team is great fun when the teammates what to work as a team! When they don't care it's much harder..

so I have this stlye class called .dialog-inner
now I want to define a button style for all button that are in a div with that class
how to

And how do you work in a team? I mean, for example do you use BitBucket?

@Yaroslav If you always code the same thing, yes, most likely...
@Curio We use our local SVN server :) And yes, I work in a small team.

@UriPopov it is a little bit different from what you are asking, but I am sure you will be able to tweak it as you need

7:08 PM
And how do you collaborate? I mean, for example you have to make an app or a game. How do you divide the work?

@Curio are you working yourself?
@Curio I mean for living
@Curio as a game dev

I'm still a student

@Curio what is your faculty and where are yu from?

I'm from Italy and I'm not an university student yet :P .
I'm going to do computer engineering

@Curio I develop heavy equipment simulators intended to train new operators; we have a software to build, we know what parts to be made, when they need to be made, and how they need to be made, most of the time. Each member of the team has some specialization, so the tasks are attributed on that basis. We kindof use scrum to manage the project and the work.

7:12 PM
so I wanted div.nameofcssclass tagname
it works

@Tyyppi_77 Hey does your game support the controllers from the PS4?

user92578
In theory it should support pretty much any controller

@AlexandreVaillancourt scrum? What do you mean?

@Curio Agile methodology.. scrum.org/resources/what-is-scrum
Scrum is an iterative and incremental agile software development framework for managing product development. It defines "a flexible, holistic product development strategy where a development team works as a unit to reach a common goal", challenges assumptions of the "traditional, sequential approach" to product development, and enables teams to self-organize by encouraging physical co-location or close online collaboration of all team members, as well as daily face-to-face communication among all team members and disciplines involved. A key principle of Scrum is the dual recognition that customers...
@Tyyppi_77 Ok, great!

Ok thanks
@AlexandreVaillancourt What faculty did you do?

7:21 PM
so any major things I should fix on the website while I'm still awake

@Curio I have a college diploma in computer science, I have a bachelor's degree in Computer science and software engineering and I have a bachelor's degree in games programming with a minor in computer science; I also have a non-completed master's degree in software engineering.

damn boy you like to study

Wow

Geez, yes, that was much fun! But you don't earn money while you study ;)

why is the backend the ez part of web dev
how do front end devs live ?

7:25 PM
How much time did you spend?

@UriPopov we've done enough that the front end is the easy part

I took me 30 mins to write my php receiver that puts the subscriptions data into a database

@UriPopov You need feedback: when the user submits the form, they need to know it went through correctly..

it took me 2 days of css fidling to make it look good
@AlexandreVaillancourt I know that I was hoping i can get away with it

@UriPopov IMHO it really feels like it's missing :)
But if you think you can live without it for now, go ahead!
The rest looks nice!

7:29 PM
I even have a animated toaster msg for the feedback but right now I cant be asked to put text in it from the php :D
during testing I used to echo out the whole page with a msg :D

Yeah, but a white page with "ok, it works" is not that great for visitors :P

nope thats why I removed it
or even worse a white page with sql connection errors :D

@UriPopov These are the best!

btw like my facebook page facebook.com/incinerationgames/?fref=ts
got to get them likes

7:44 PM
Sorry I don't like pages...

cold :(

I know :(
Maybe this will cheer you up
I think I could watch that all day...

hah :D

8:01 PM
How is the game loop time time budgeted, generally? Does someone decides that graphics have 6ms, physics have 6ms, AI has 2 ms and the rest has 2ms?
And each team manages to respect that budget?
And if so, (how) is it enforced?

@UriPopov why is there "My name is Curio" instead of "Subscribe" in your site!?
I'm speachless

8:25 PM
what should I know to get a Unity dev job? I mean as a coder.

@Yaroslav Release a game, you'll prove you can use Unity :)

hmm
@AlexandreVaillancourt what quality should the game have?

I don't know :(

@AlexandreVaillancourt I got it.
@AlexandreVaillancourt I hope it will be much easier for me to get job here in Ukraine than it is for everyone of you over there abroad. Since game dev is not a very popular job herem but still I saw some vacancies.
lol. I live and dormitory and right now we are going to peel potatoe (З

@Yaroslav It is popular here :)
Hmm, happy peeling :)

8:32 PM
do you guys often peel potatoabroad?
thanks

peeling potatoes?

@AlexandreVaillancourt and that is why it should be easier for me to get a job here. There is not much competition.
@Curio yep

why?

@Curio becuase it is not popular

and why are you going to do this? XD

8:33 PM
@Curio making games is not popular in my country

@Yaroslav are you meaning computer games are not popular in Ukraine?

@Yaroslav It's popular and there is demand :)
(for employees)

Like as in the market is not big?

@Curio peeling potato is popular (x
@AlexandreVaillancourt got it
my internet was disconnected
@DukeZhou I do not know about market, but very few people are intereted in game dev here in Ukraine

In the US, most people who would have to peel potatoes simply buy they powdered in a box

8:35 PM
@DukeZhou it can be that I am wrong
@DukeZhou lol

all I know is, Tetris, one of the most successful games of all time came out of the USSR, and the Academy of Science no less
and people will surely be playing Tetris long after most contemporary computer games have been long forgotten

Tetris is a very good design

@Almo and easy to produce! (They say that's one of the reasons combinatorial games and puzzles are so popular.)

I think they might be popular because they tend to have few rules and lots of complexity. easy to learn, hard to master.

8:51 PM
That too for sure.

I have a problem

Reversi rebranded as Othello was one of the most successful boardgames, partly based on the slogan "minutes to learn, a lifetime to master"

yeah, it's quite easy to learn, but is also complex
I wrote an AI for it
works pretty well

but there is also the element that, you can go out an buy a checker board, or you can just make one yourself

I should probably write it in Unity and stick it on my website

8:53 PM
In my game I have to set part of the layout based on aspect ratio...but there are a lot of these ones...how can I do it? Is there a simpler way?

I dodge that by forcing an aspect ratio
my mobile game just letterbox/pillarbox depending on the shape of the device

Othello is a tough market b/c it's public domain and so saturated. That said, if you do it, I'll link to it on deterministicgames.com!

I wouldn't be doing it for money
just something that people can play on my site
:)

(having trouble finding free, online combinatorial games from sites that don't "data rape" their visitors;)

@Almo I'm setting the layout for each screen

8:54 PM
iggamecenter.com
great site
tons of games
play with people, or some games can be played with a bot

very nice! I'm glad I brought it up

game designers hang out there in the chat, too
they even test new designs in the sandbox
so if you like combinatorials, definitely hang out there

awesome

want to play my game linkage there?
it's short

hell yes

8:57 PM
ok :)
i'll open a table, you can join

Actually, I have to wait to I leave the office to actually play

ok!
I'll be busy a while
but we can play another time! :)

It reminds me of domineering-type games, from the image

it's a vaguely territorial game about groups. rules are there on the site
asymmetric victory condition >:)

Domineering (also called Stop-Gate or Crosscram) is a mathematical game played on a sheet of graph paper, with any set of designs traced out. For example, it can be played on a 6×6 square, a checkerboard, an entirely irregular polygon, or any combination thereof. Two players have a collection of dominoes which they place on the grid in turn, covering up squares. One player, Left, plays tiles vertically, while the other, Right, plays horizontally. As in most games in combinatorial game theory, the first player who cannot move loses. Domineering is a partisan game, in that players use different pieces...

8:59 PM
oh right
i've heard of that one

Re: asymmetric victory condition, that sounds exceptionally cool

only after I designed linkage though :)

especially in a game so compact

honestly I'm kind of lucky it works as well as it does
anyway got pals comin soon, better get ready
cat puke to clean up :(

I hear you
good luck with the cat puke!

9:01 PM
D:

9:22 PM
@Curio I forgot to log on again lol sorry
I got home, went gym, cleaned my house, and I've been dancing in my bedroom all night :P

9:42 PM
@Tyyppi_77, how many commits do you have in your git repo?
@AlexandreVaillancourt thanks for the info

Q: Do we need the tag [middleware]?

Alexandre VaillancourtWe've recently decided to get rid of the engine tag, along with api, framework, libraries and sdk. I haven't noticed before but we also have a tag for middleware, where the description is appropriate, but that has no tag usage. Like the other tags, I feel this tag does not bring value to the ...

10:08 PM
interesting. why do I have the same rating in game meta as in game dev stackexchage?

10:27 PM
@Yaroslav you don't get rep in meta!

user92578
10:51 PM
@Yaroslav remind me to check tomorrow, bitbucket doesnt seem to give that stat to me directly

user4704
11:18 PM
@Yaroslav Your reputation is shared between any site and that site's meta subsite.

user4704
@AlexandreVaillancourt That's basically it.

user4704
You set out time buckets for major subsystems, you implement a system to track how much each system takes, and you report on it. Particularly when a system exceeds its budget instantaneously or over time.

@JoshPetrie Ok, thanks! Is there such a thing that physics has 2 graphics frame to update? For instance, you set your physics to run at 30FPS but have your graphics run at 60, allowing your physics to have 2 frames to update?
(With extrapolation for the 2nd graphics frame)

11:53 PM
stuff like that happens, yeah
in some games AI only updates once or twice a second
