I'm pulling for Lin-Manuel Miranda to win for How Far I'll Go in the Best Original Song category, but he's possibly facing some stiff competition this year. I mean La La Land has two songs nominated, and while Justin Timberlake's song likely won't won, I wouldn't count him out either.
Oh, the nominations are out then? \o/
@MattD ("You're Welcome" is better though)
Also, ALL OF SING STREET'S SOUNDTRACK SHOULD HAVE BEEN NOMINATED, THIS IS AN OUTRAGE
@DrRDizzle It's catchier, but when you consider the category it's understandable why How Far I'll Go was selected. He'll have a better shot at winning with that one.
lol
hai @steelersquirrel
I just want him to win it because it'll give him his EGOT, and he'll be only the third person ever (and youngest) to PEGOT.
16:16
Woot! Marisa Tomei is went hot ;)
@MattD PEGOT?
@DForck42 Hello!!
@DForck42 EGOT while having also won the Pulitzer Prize.
@steelersquirrel :-D
Twelve people and five media franchises have won all four major annual American entertainment awards in a competitive, individual (non-group) category: the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. Respectively, these awards honor outstanding achievements in television, audio recording, film, and theater. Winning all four awards has been referred to as winning the "grand slam" of American show business. The acronym EGOT was coined by actor Philip Michael Thomas. == Winners of all four awards == To date, twelve individuals have won all four awards in competitive categories. 16:18
@MattD ahh ok
@DForck42 Yeah, I only just recently learned about it, like around the time Moana came out and I was looking into the whole EGOT thing again.
@MattD Very true.
@MattD neat
I also learned the several of my friends found the song Shiny to be terrible. I loved it.
I have zero clue about any of the nominated movies.
16:20
@MattD haven't heard it
@MattD It's grown on me since I saw it. Still don't love it.
@DrRDizzle I can admit it's a bit out of place, but as a song I think it's very well crafted.

Q: Use of capital letters in credits

busboyDoes anyone know why on TV show's credits a lot of times the actor's first name is lower case and their last name is done in all caps?

Q: Clearing the Shire of Orcs and Goblins

Pete B.In the books, after Saruman was defeated, the hobbits return to the Shire to discover orcs and goblins terrorizing their homeland. Peregrin and Merry play an important role having grown in size and strength from their time with the Ents. To me this is some of the most important points of the st...

@steelersquirrel I doubt some of them have even been released here.
And for anyone who hasn't seen Moana, this is the song that's nominated.
16:22
We tend to get many of the true Oscar-bait films shortly before or even after the Oscars.
@NapoleonWilson That happens with a few of them in the States as well.
I really recommend Manchester by the Sea if no one has seen it. Fantastic film, just come prepared for something emotionally heavy. Hoooooooo boy....
Mel Gibson is nominated?!?!?! 6 African Americans nominated? Hmmmm... didn't see that one coming ;)
<sarcastic squirrel>
Which is also why the oh-so awful January/February time isn't always that awful here. (Well, depending on one's attitude towards Oscar-bait films.)
@steelersquirrel Hehe!
I couldn't care less about the Oscars.
@NapoleonWilson That is also improving a bit in the States. Many directors and studios are realizing it's potential as they can perform well with little competition from "dumping ground" films.
Deadpool and The Lego Movie both released in February and did gangbusters at the box office.
16:26
@steelersquirrel Sure, but it's always a nice event to watch. And also a good chance for topic challenges and live chat events.
When I was answering that question last night and reading about the process to get nominated, it's an ass kissing process that the studios oversee. No wonder Heath Ledger wanted to boycott his nomination for Brokeback Mountain.
@NapoleonWilson Sure. I like Jimmy Kimmel. Isn't he the host?
@steelersquirrel yeah, it's very pretentious
@steelersquirrel Yeah, once you learn of that aspect it takes quite a bit of the luster out of the awards, but Hollywood's always been about ass kissing so it's par for the course.
@steelersquirrel I don't know.
Adam Ruins Everything did a nice bit on the Oscars.
16:29
@steelersquirrel Yeah, Jake Gyllenhaal isn't really appeciated either.
@steelersquirrel You know that we might actually watch that together, right? (Unless you have to work.)
@DForck42 I was a little shocked, actually. So, a studio sends these Academy voters what they want them to see and can basically bribe them...I wonder how much the actors have to do with this. I know that they have to go to these stupid luncheons and stuff and suck up. Matt's right. Hollywood is all about ass kissing.
@NapoleonWilson Cool! When is it? Don't you run a chat event?
Also, looking at the list of nominees for Best Picture, 2016 looks to be a banner year for films with a predominantly black main cast.
@steelersquirrel On February 26th apperently. And yes.
Oh, for god's sake, of course Mrs. Streep is nominated.
@NapoleonWilson Didn't you hear? She's a terrible, washed up actress who should just keep her mouth shut. :P
Also, if you haven't seen Borrowed Time, which is nominated for Best Animated Short, you should fix that right now. vid.me/tlOM
Oh, I've seen Arrival at least, but I had to scroll down to Cinematography for that. ;-)
@MattD Wut?
16:39
@NapoleonWilson it's a comment by trump
cause she spoke out against him
@NapoleonWilson She used her Golden Globes win to bash Trump so naturally he and most every Republican in the country derided her saying she's washed up and should just keep her mouth shut.
Well, I'm pleased to see Denis Villeneuve on there. It might not be his best film overall, but it was really well-executed.
@DForck42 Oh gheez.
They were literally saying celebrities shouldn't get involved in politics. I'm not even kidding.
(If you told me, a US president once said that about her, I'd have a hard time believing you, but when you put it that way...)
@MattD Says the party that ran on a "everyone should take back the country from the politicians" platform.
@NapoleonWilson yup
16:43
@NapoleonWilson Trust me, the irony is not wasted on me.
Anyway, that documentary titled O.J.: <Whatever>, is that about Mr. Simpson?
Oh, Toni Erdmann is nominated too, I haven't seen that. But well, I haven't even seen Victoria yet.
@NapoleonWilson Yes.
@MattD Er, don't all of the winners use their speech as a political platform?
Heh, and Suicide Squad is nominated, too.
Sorry... most of the winners.
16:47
@steelersquirrel Yeah, didn't Patricia Arquette make that women's wages thing last year?
@steelersquirrel I wouldn't say all of them, and those that do aren't always direct about it, or responding to one person in particular.
@AJ I don't think so
@MattD When you say "they" do you mean Rush Limbaugh? ;)
Oh, and I haven't seen Passengers yet. Hmpf, I wanted to see that.
@NapoleonWilson Yes. Hollywood actors are so oppressed. They have so much to complain about.
16:48
And a song from that drug movie is nominated, too. ;-)
I am going to watch Dark Knight today
@AnkitSharma I'm sorry :P
@steelersquirrel Did you notice the quote
16:50
@steelersquirrel Him, Trump, Fox News, several Republican family members of mine.
They have no problem with celebrities who speak well of them, but fuck the ones who don't. They need to just shut up.
I'm finding more and more in the last week that people don't seem to realize that in calling for certain actions against people they don't like, they're also screwing themselves over.
Like the White Nationalist guy who was decked in the head last Friday during the inauguration.
Or rather, people feeling that action is justified and should be encouraged.
@MattD The majority of my family is Republican as well. They all love Meryl Streep. Especially my father. I am not surprised that Trump would say that about her, but I am surprised about news outlets saying that...
@MattD Hahaha! Seriously? What celebrity speaks well of Republicans?
@steelersquirrel Country singers, Ted Neugent, Kelsey Grammer, James Woods.
@MattD Do you mean the protestors who were throwing rocks through windows and stuff?
@steelersquirrel Not that specifically, although those jerk bags can also go to jail.
@MattD Uhm...yeah. Because so many people will listen to those A-listers ;)
A J

16:55
@AnkitSharma Enjoy :P
@AnkitSharma Good idea.
A J
A J
@steelersquirrel Didn't you notice the room quote?
@steelersquirrel I'm referring to this incident.
Give me a Hollywood A-lister that is a Republican or would dare to say that they are...
Why's everyone so hung up on that quote? Where is it from?
16:56
@MattD Oh, sorry. I didn't see that.
A J
A J
@steelersquirrel knows
@AJ I didn't notice! Cool! Brokeback Mountain...?
I don't like White Nationalist/Neo Nazi/Alt-Right movements as much as the next Liberal, but that guy did not deserve to be clocked in the head with an elbow. He was exercising his right to free speech just as much as anyone else protesting was.
If he didn't get violent, the violence is not afforded him.
Yeah. I totally agree.
Yay, Arrival is nominated for Best Picture.
16:59
I'm a big, big supporter of free speech, and unfortunately this includes letting people say and believe some pretty deplorable things. The moment we say they're not allowed to, we draw a line that can then be used against anyone else deemed "inappropriate" or pushing "undesirable speech".
@NapoleonWilson I'm happy it is as well, but it won't win.
@MattD Sure.
@NapoleonWilson Brockback Mountain
Always good to see a good sci-fi movie nominated, though.
I was right!!!
Even applicable for ToW
17:00
I never got around to asking my question last night.
Wut, Hail Ceasar!? Wasn't that nominated last year already?
Oh, and the oil thing with Marky Mark is even nominated.
@NapoleonWilson No, because it was released in February 2016.
@MattD I thought I remembered some actual nominations for it.
@NapoleonWilson Yeah. Wahlberg will be taking Brady and Trump as his dates ;)
I guess I misremember, because all that Hollywood self-nostalgia has that Oscar-feel to it all the time.
17:04
@MattD Oh! I thought of an A lister who is a Republican! Tom Brady. Actually, I don't think that he has ever come out and said that he's a Republican, but he and Trump are bff's.
It looks like this year's cutoff date for a film being released that could be nominated was midnight of December 31.
Or wait, I guess they just played the trailer to Hail Caesar! to death in those millions of commercial breaks, since all the same trailers is pretty much all they bring as commercials around that time of the night when the Oscars are on.
Anyway, lunch time.
Yahan Ameena Bikti Hai is a 2016 Indian drama film directed by Kumar Raj. The Cameroon-based company MD4 Production had a small role to play in the film. Despite that, it was selected as the Cameroonian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 89th Academy Awards. However, the film was not included on the final list of submissions published by the Academy. == Cast == Rekha Rana == See also == List of submissions to the 89th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film List of Cameroonian submissions for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film == References == == Ext...
@NapoleonWilson I didn't even get to watch it last year. I had to work. And my boyfriend was even nominated last year :(
17:07
But it didn't make it into the foreign category
A J

@MattD Just had dinner.
@AnkitSharma ohh
@AJ still cooking here
Lunchtime! Dinner time! It's only 9am! ;)

@steelersquirrel You're having breakfast?
@steelersquirrel What was he nominated for?
I doubt it was Mad Max.
@NapoleonWilson No skiing today. I'm going to see that Split thing with April. She has the week off of work. Yes, she's a horrible and evil working mother ;)
@steelersquirrel Yay! Hehe! \o/
But why no skiing?
@NapoleonWilson The Revenant, silly bean!
@steelersquirrel wow
17:11
@NapoleonWilson Meh. I don't know. I changed my mind last night.
@steelersquirrel Oh, right!
@steelersquirrel Why? (I hope not because of me, since I was totally happy for you to go skiing.)
@NapoleonWilson Uhm, I don't know. I talked to my brother last night and I just decided not to go.
Oh, okay then.
I am just obsessed with Rockabye song now.
It even gave me new word in my dictionary
Awwww. Why would it be because of you? Don't worry :)
17:14
@steelersquirrel I don't know, just making sure. ;-)
@AnkitSharma which word?
Define: Rockabye
Sure that's an actual word?
@AnkitSharma I got 2 answers to my V for Vendetta question within minutes of eachother! They seem to tie back to the other question that I asked and the fact that after watching that movie, I was really obsessed with Natalie Portman's shaved head ;)
> Rockabye
1. When someone hits the nail on the head with a comment or comeback, the appropriate response by any participating spectator should be "rockabye".

2. When someone makes a suggestion that is simply outstanding, the appropriate response is "rockabye". Sort of similar to "amen" if you will.
Person 1: "Let's get wasted tonight!"
Person 2: "Rockabye!"
17:16
I have never heard of that before!
@steelersquirrel V for Vendetta is just awesome film
@AnkitSharma weird, must be a regional thing
Actually, I just watched Forgetting Sarah Marshall for the billionth time and had to Google what "Going from 6 to midnight" meant...
@AnkitSharma aka is probably trashy pop ;-) (I'm a slight music snob)
17:18
I heard it late
@DForck42 I like pop. @steelersquirrel is even a big fan of Taylor Swifts pop song ;)
#TeamTaytay
Yeah. I'm the President of the TSwift fan club :P

@NapoleonWilson Well, both of my questions seemed to tie together like that. I don't know.
@steelersquirrel Which is a good thing, no?
@NapoleonWilson I like that answer too
@NapoleonWilson I think so, even though it wasn't done intentionally.
That remind me I still have no direct V for Vendetta question yet
17:23
<shakes head>
How to get a topic of week for it O.o
@steelersquirrel k v
;-P
(But yeah, I'm joking, please don't!) ;-)
Did we done Alan Moore ToW already O.o
