Q: Help me identify anime - probably from the 80s~90s

Nyx StarsI don't have any images or clips unfortunately but a few things about this anime: There was a scene with a girl using a scooter-like vehicle on water after she and her grandfather(?) and brother had an argument and she went of to the sea. She then enters the water with this vehicle and drops it ...

@Walt I saw your comments. Why do you feel that you need to justify your community involvement? I just noticed that you mentioned that you were planning to cut down your involvement. You don't owe anyone an explanation about being around too much and you surely don't need to cut down your involvement to appease people. I rarely go on meta, but that statement made about your involvement irritated me a bit, I must say.
I think it's bullshit, tbh. Walt was once a new user, but still took it upon himself to be a valued contributor. If people don't want to post an answer because Walt has answered, it's their problem! I have an answer to the same question as Walt and while I didn't get my answer accepted, it's the highest voted answer that I have. If other users want to compete with Walt's answers, step the f**k up and post quality answers like his!!!!

Q: Movies about Nazis in Germany and France?

cdeMovies about Nazis are quite common in American cinema. Hollywood produces one a year on average. These movies tend to be block busters that are distributed for international markets. A few widely aired or syndicates TV shows also broach the topic of Nazis, even for just one episode. Germany an...

@steelerfan That's very nice of you to say. But I assure you I'm not offended, I just thought his reasoning was faulty on that one. And me trying to take a little break from SE has nothing to do with it; I barely answered anything since Wednesday. My workload has simply increased.
@steelerfan "I have an answer to the same question" Yeah, that's partly why I think the argument doesn't work. Most of my answers are ID anyway, and once the OP says it's correct, there's usually no point in answering further. And I'm pretty sure plenty of the non-ID Qs I answered had other answers, and good ones, sometimes ranking higher than mine. So I don't think I'm a very good example.

Q: What movie had a nazi soldier force a mother to chose between her two children?

EskimoPamSometime in the late 80's - early 90's I saw a WWII movie with an intense scene involving a mother with a son and younger daughter. @Walt Well, as long as your cool with it. I was just slightly irritated with you being singled out for being a valued contributor. I have always liked Richard, I just disagreed with him about this. Going skiing at Timberline (aka Overlook hotel) everytime we walk in there, we always have to say "Here's Johnny" hehehe :)
I"m sure they love that and never tire of hearing it.
Haha! It's tradition!!
@steelerfan Oh, you go skiing?
The Internship is quite nice. Nothing special or amazing, but a fun feelgood film.
@NapoleonWilson Yep. I go a lot this time of year. I didn't go last year, I miss it. We always ski Mt. Hood bc it's close :)
You're quite sporty.
17:07
@NapoleonWilson HA HA HA! Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson characters are like my sister and I trying to work at Google. I thought that movie was hilarious :)
@NapoleonWilson Yeah, so many people around here ski. I only ski, not snowboard. I tried to snowboard......chaos ensued ;)
@steelerfan Well, it's still far nearer than I ever got to winter sports (or any sports really), sliding down a hill on a sled as a child.
@NapoleonWilson Oh, skiing is the best! It's so much fun. I keep telling you, I live in the greatest place. I'm 1.5 hours away from the slopes, 1.5 hours away from the beach. It's frigging awesome! Do you guys have slopes near you?
Not that anyone in here will find this surprising, but apparently I don't have an iPad, it's a kindle fire. I just always called it an iPad. So that's why it doesn't have a camera!! Haha! I'm such a frigging idiot!
@steelerfan Some smaller ones in about 0.5-1 hour away, I guess.
@steelerfan Of course you do. It must be such a magical place. Don't forget that you go fishing, too.
17:21
@NapoleonWilson Well, you need to start skiing!
@steelerfan Wait a minute, I just got back into swimming and nearly died in the attempt. Leave me some time to catch up with you. :'(
@steelerfan I don't really know anyone I'd go skiing with, I guess. Neither did I ever have the drive to do so, I admit. :'(
@NapoleonWilson OMG! I don't want to kill you! You know me to go skiing with, silly :)
@steelerfan But you're on the other side of the world!
@NapoleonWilson So, I pulled out one of my art books to try and find this painting for your james bond question. The painting looks like it's a Grimshaw painting. Grrr, I can't find that particular one!
@NapoleonWilson Hey, you have an open invitation to come over here any time you want :)
@steelerfan Yeah, in fact I, um, have a question. What would you say if I, um, like, next season, would want to, um, go to a life NFL game with you?
17:36
@NapoleonWilson I'd say..... FRIGGING AWESOME!!!
A Steelers game, I presume?
@steelerfan I'd hope so. I'm not sure you can get the full steelerfan experience without one. ;-)
@NapoleonWilson HA HA! Cool! Well, I will have to plan my European vacation so that I can stop in Pittsburgh on my way there/back to go to a Steelers game with you!! Awesome!! Woot!!
@steelerfan Well, I'd leave the actual game/day to you, I'm rather free to plan as I please. So if that's most comfortable/appropriate for you, sure.
@NapoleonWilson Well, it just makes sense since I will be over there during football season anyways. Germany is my first stop on my Griswold-esque European vacation ;) Is "sex" really German for "six"? ;) I'll have to watch that movie before I leave. Haha!
@steelerfan Um wut? Well, it's spelled differently, but, yeah indeed. (The "s" is smoother, though, you can usually clearly hear the difference.)
17:50
@NapoleonWilson In European Vacation Clark Griswold is in Germany, looking for room#6. He knocks on a door and says "My family and I are looking for sex". Hilarity ensues :)
@steelerfan In this case I could just travel back with you afterall. (But warning, I'm not actually able to carry you, I think.)
@steelerfan Yeah, now that you say it I tend to remember. But I haven't seen that for ages.
So, naturally, my sister and I always say that when anything involving #6, we always have to say that ;)
Wasn't this where they accidentally land in house #9 and talk to complete strangers all the time, thinking they're relatives?
@NapoleonWilson OMG! That would be awesome! Haha, you won't have to carry me. You might have to babysit, though ;)
@NapoleonWilson HA HA! Yeah. I frigging LOVE that movie!! OMG! Temptation is going to get the better of me while I am over there to go and knock on a door and say that ;)
17:57
HA HA! It won't be near as fun without my sister there. She would be the only one who would appreciate it ;)
@steelerfan Depends on the person whose door you choose, though, I guess.
@NapoleonWilson Oh, Napoleon, you know that your door is the only door that I would choose :)
Haha!
Off to the slopes! After I say my ceremonial "Here's Johnny", I will be sure to say that @MikeEdenfield dared me to ;) hehehe :)
18:13
@steelerfan Have fun!

Simon DKIn The Force Awakens, there is a very powerful weapon used by the First Order to destroy the Hosnian system. Their next target is the planet D'Qar. How did the first order knew the base of the Resistance was located on this planet?

23:12
@AndrewMartin Wow, seems thorough. Have you seen Napoleon's stats on the issue, BTW?
<Revisiting Meta> Er, nevermind. ;)
@Walt: I hadn't actually, no. Napoleon directed me and I've added an answer there
I don't know what the solution is. I dislike the idea of outright banning the questions. They do help people, particularly with a master of answering them like you around. If they were far less numerous, and there were far more other questions, like on the Sci Fi stack, I wouldn't have an issue at all.
But they're becoming increasingly numerous, and the amount of quality other questions appears to be decreasing. It does concern me that it will make this site a home of all question and answers for unknown films.
even on SF/F, though, even when we get lots of id questions, they're not as downright bad as yours.
If that's what the community wants, so be it. It wouldn't be for me, but if the majority of users like it, brilliant. But I suspect it will lead to reduce participation and will hurt the site.
@MikeEdenfield: Agree totally. Do we just ban them totally? If so, we really would go down to Beta-levels of question asking again.
yes. that's the dilemma of coming out of beta.
on the one hand, you don't want your activity to plummet.
on the other hand, I don't imagine anyone's vision for this site was "the movie id people", but if that's all that people ask here it will evolve into that.
i mean, it's natural to expect a site to change over time... the original vision for SF&F was for critical analysis of sci-fi, I believe!
but you gotta guide it somehow.
I definitely dislike the current state of the Movies site, and it drove me away from active participation for nearly a year. I don't know about other core users, but the questions just kept coming and coming.
23:27
I think having concrete requirements for what has to be in a question before you'll take it is a good start; the stuff we always have to remind users to put in.
like, when did you see this? tv or movie? what country? etc.
but otherwise, I'm as stumped as everyone else.
I get torn with identify questions because many users ask terrible questions, with almost no identifiable information, yet somehow we still manage to get them the right answer.
So even when they don't include all that stuff, we as a community answer it for them.
Honestly, at this point, I'm not sure what we could do but ban them totally.
personally, I don't like them. to me they're a bad fit for the overall principle of SE sites.
but not every site has to line up exactly with those ideas. especially the 'softer' sites.
And I worry that when someone wants to ask a great, say, Star Wars question, they immediately go to the Sci Fi site, because the Movies site has a lesser reputation because of the volume of ident questions.
Agreed
23:29
so i have no persuasive argument to make against them, here or on sf/f, in principle. only on the grounds that that they're usually terrible quality. :\
As you say, they seem to be so much worse quality here though!
I know and I can't figure it out. The only thing I can come up with is that a significant chunk of our id questions are short-story/book questions.
with movies, you might see one on TV for 10 seconds, or a scene might stick in your head because of the hot actress.
with written stuff, you probably remember the whole work better. so you can give more details.
Exactly. I guess it's a visual memory quirk. When reflecting on movies or shows once seen, even a few seconds of footage can be vivid decades later.
I totally agree.
but we get TV anthology questions a lot, too.. twilight zone, amazing stories, etc.
I dunno.
I suppose my biggest gripe with them is that I'm not convinced they help future users. Even though they're bad quality, I'm glad we help someone. But we're meant to help someone and someone else down the line ideally, via a repository of questions and answers. I feel a lot of the former ident questions are answered, then forgotten.
No one upvotes the question, no one upvotes the answer.
Apart from the OP who may accept it.
They just get answered and forgotten.
23:36
holy cow it's even more lopsided than I thought.
we have just over 900 story-id questions.
768 of them are short-story (or short story-or-book) questions
0
Q: What is this movie?

colton cI just need the source of this picture! :) I think it came out in 2013

the other question I'd be interested in answering is, where are these people finding out about this site and deciding it's a good place to ask an id question?
2
23:50
@MikeEdenfield: That's a crucial question for me. I've absolutely no idea, but they're finding out somewhere.
