Would a questions asking for suggestions for good online blogs or podcasts where movies are reviewed be on-topic?
There are some questions like this on Stackoverflow, e.g. 'single most influential book every programmer should read'

I just think that if, for instance, someone new comes to chat and sees even a vaguely interesting conversation in the log, they may stick around or try to come back.
For a view from a low-traffic site (Cryptography): I like to have the feed in the chat to get notified about new questions (with the "bing" I configured to occur on every chat message for me) without having to reload the main page. Of course I could have the same thing in a RSS feed reader.
We have an one-digit number of new questions each day, so this stays manageable. I don't know about your traffic, though.
