Q: Movie (maybe show?) where clinic is held hostage for adult son who dies

Intrigued guestAt the latest, I saw this movie in 2008 on TV. I'll describe what I remember and see if it rings any bells. There were three adult men, including what I believe to be a father and a son. The adult son has been critically injured, so the two other men hold a clinic hostage. The third man in the g...

Jamela KachinaOf-course Batman is also a superhero like Superman etc, he should save the earth from dangerous enemies. So why is the Batman character restricted to Gotham City?

How to format hyperlinks in comments just like in the answers?
@MovieReel Unfortunately the Nolan movies would enable a great answer on this one and from the looks of its first responses on Comics.SE it might not go too well there. But alas, in this form it is not really a movie question.
@chaitanya89 Well, in exactly the same way you do it in the answers [visible text](link).

@NapoleonWilson I tried but it's appearing with syntax in the comments. e.g., I typed my message in the answer box and formatted hyperlink and copy pasted in the comment section but it did not work.

it's a stupid tag anyway
@Flyk Good that "stupidity" (or one person's assessment thereof) is not a sufficient reason, though.
you have too many brackets in that statement

at least I'm doing specific-scene and not violence
as for unanimous, I'm not the person who merged copyright and legal while it has a net score of 0

it's a nice touch
@NapoleonWilson yeah, whoever merged copyright and legal :p
@Flyk Yeah, realized too late, probably going to undelete the others.

@NapoleonWilson well I was worried, I had posted enough posts in a short enough time that if you deleted them to mark them all complete it might have banned me from posting new questions :p

not really something I want to change
@Flyk Of course you do, who wouldn't want to win that great challenge!
I'm not interested in any great challenge

preferably where the best answer has a tick mark against it
and all voted on accordingly
11:56
Ugh, and you picked one I wanted to answer myself. And then posted nothing but a non-explained TVTropes link. Meesa sad, you better not interested in challenge. ;-(
I explained it, it's a dissimile, there was no poison ivy
@Flyk So what's a dissimile and what's the purpose of this whole dialogue?
I don't know, I haven't seen the movie
I even provided the quote that proves it was a dissimile
@NapoleonWilson "what is a dissimile" is a question for EL&U, not here
@Flyk I still don't know what's that "dissimile" thing you're talking about.
you don't know the meaning of the word dissimile?
12:00
@Flyk No, I don't, especially not in the context of that question that would reveal any actual prupose of that dialogue to me.
there was no purpose to the dialogue, it was just some throwaway line that was supposed to be funny on account of the incorrect comparison
And my dictionary doesn't know it either.
@Flyk You don't say, but don't tell me. ;-)
it's a real word, that exists
@Flyk Thanks, that's part of a solution, I guess.
sorry for using the big words
even if they were the correct words to use in context
12:04
Well, don't apologize to me, but all the users who absolutely don't know what that means for the actual question (well, ok, I'm part of them so that apology does help, if it was in the answer ;-)).
I'm not going to explain what a dissimile is
this isn't english language & usage
You don't have to, it would be sufficient to explain what the friggin point of that dialogue was, i.e. writing an actual answer istead of saying "the exact dialogue was..., oh, and here's a related link that might interest you" - "uh, thanks mate, I guess".
ok but why would it be correct for me to write out a full sentence stating bla bla bla bla this is the meaning
@Flyk Because it tries to answer the question?
when dissimile means to make a statement that something is similar to something that isn't similar in any way to what you're describing?
the sentence you're asking for is the meaning of the word "dissimile"
that's what it means...
12:09
Well, maybe it was really just my insufficient knowledge of the English language that stops me from seeing this as anything else than a link-only answer. Nevermind, gonna move that to a proper comment in near time anyway.
hilarious - the link is a link to a page explaining the meaning of dissimile, the answer is in the post itself.
Bah, might work sufficiently enough in its current form.

14:44
@NapoleonWilson I'm still voting for Cinema.
cinema?
French-cinema
It's actually used to specifically describe the films from a country... so there's no ambiguity. "French-Cinema" means "the cinema of France"... it does not imply "French-language" the way that "French-Films" does.
Meh, not a big fan of it, but maybe rather than just french.
Sorry, French-movies.
@Catija Feel free to propose it.
14:55
I think language tags are a bad idea
just remove all of the tags
ALL OF THEM
including
The problem is that not all films in English are from an English speaking country... There are French films that are in English... Hell, all of the Spaghetti Westerns are technically Italian films but are in English.
am I understanding the purpose of these tags correctly?
for example
is intended to be used in a similar manner to ?
@Flyk Except, like Bollywood, I think that the Hollywood tag should go away because not all films are Hollywood films... and the line of definition there isn't nearly as clear as with Bollywood films... because they have many different languages while pretty much all of ours are in English, regardless of if they're from NYC or wherever.
looking at the tag - it's horrible
with that in mind, what would your justification be for keeping but not ?
and carrying on from that, what would be the purpose of keeping [tag:*movie] and ?
I hate you markdown
If these tags are only designed for ID questions, then the language may be more appropriate... if the questions are about film making in France (unlikely), then the french-cinema may be better.... I feel like there should be a way to tag the language of a film in an ID question.
But maybe it doesn't really matter.
15:04
I don't think we need a bunch of meta tags only for identification questions
it's a shame the tag system doesn't support sub tags, then you could make them specifically only for identification questions
but alas
Yeah, that would make tagging for IDs really great... they pick ID this ____ and then it gives the option of genre, language etc... because we rarely use the genre tags outside of ID questions, either.
what about this:

Q: Are there any "Hollywood-style" movies made in Iran?

puriI have watched a lot of Iranian movies and I love them but they are similar in style (realistic long shots and slow cuts) and content (e.g. struggle of the society reflecting in children or seemingly mundane events). I doubt if all Iranians solely love this kind of movies. Japan, Korea, China, In...

remove both tags?
Definitely not Hollywood.
Um... I would leave Iranian or iranian film/cinema whatever... and add film industry?
but then we're basically having loads of language tags
The question is specific to film making in Iran. It should be tagged as such.
We don't lose cred as a SE site for having a lot of tags that are largely unused.
15:09
no but having a lot of tags that are largely unused results in lots of tags that are largely abused
I don't think that anyone is going to inadvertently add country/language tags... and, if they do, we will remove them after the question is asked. That's just how it works. Most questions have to get their tags edited unless they're asked by knowledgeable users.
Short of not having tags, there's no way to prevent people from using the wrong ones.
and thus not having tags that aren't really needed and aren't going to be useful as filters is a good thing
yet I'm torn, because these can be used as filters, I'm sure there is a general consensus on language tags somewhere else on SE
You can't know what someone's going to look for as a filter.
I don't think they're going to filter for when looking for a single line of spanish spoken in a movie, though
I can appreciate the need for in the instance where you're looking for questions about french cinema
maybe in that last example it should be ?
If we're going to switch from -movies to -cinema, yes... right now the standard is -movies... but this is clearly about the film production of Iran, which would be appropriate for -cinema.
Oh, I see.
Use -cinema for movies about the film industry in another country?
So Hollywood would become american-cinema.
... though that's usually the default.
15:26
yes
and then remove all the language tags or only use them for identification
@Catija might as well have a consistent naming scheme, make hollywood a synonym
I like that idea. -cinema for questions about filmmaking in that country, which would likely be rare... and language specific tags for ID questions.... but only if they're actually used.
I don't personally believe we need language tags for identification questions
But honestly, if the language is just a factor of the ID question, I think that in-body info about the language is sufficient... particularly as most people don't remember what language a film was in.
yes
so we remove all language tags, and have country specific industry tags following the format -cinema
We just have to be really clear in the description that those tags are only for questions about filmmaking in that country.
But we'll always have to struggle with it a bit regardless.
Now we just have to get the big guys on board.

That -cinema idea is nice, but why does this have to come with the requirement of not using them for ID questions looking for french movies? Because people will definitely do that and I fail to see the problem in that.
@NapoleonWilson are you able to reliably determine by looking at a movie that you can't remember the name of, and only have vague memories of the details, that it was british-cinema and not a french movie with british dialogue?
@Flyk Well, I'd consider such distinction just marginal and rare enough to not care for deleting country tags from each an every identification question. If it wasn't a genuine French movie, then so be it, misleading tag, wouldn't be the first time in an ID question.
@NapoleonWilson so, remove the opportunity for misleading tags by limiting the usage scope
there are a number of questions that would benefit from a -cinema tag
in their current state, nobody would use these tags, because they're full of identification questions
so the "good" questions are hidden in a list of crap
that list of crap should be limited to tags
@Flyk I just don't see people limiting it that much. I agree that we don't need millions of ID-specific tags. But once we already have that tag for other things, like general questions about the science-fiction genre and the workings of the french-cinema, why not also enable them to be used for specifying ID question better?
15:42
@NapoleonWilson no... it adds no value to the question
@Flyk Well, that is also an interesting point, I admit.
there is no point of a tagging system if tagging is a free for all mess
identification questions don't need and and
they just need
@Flyk Why not, it specifies what the question is about. You are onto something with the prohibition of any other tags for ID questions, but that is an entirely different discussion that needs careful evaluation on its own.
everything else is text in the question
@Flyk Which I didn't propose, though.
15:44
however, a question about the use of music for subtle soundtracks in french cinema
@Flyk Fair enough.
that deserves a tag and a tag
you don't tag a question because it has a car in it!
@Flyk I know. So what?
so why do you want tag it if it has a few lines spoken in french?
@Flyk We don't tag it french if people speak a few lines of french, but if the movie was likely from France.
15:47
@NapoleonWilson how do you know that the movie is from france if you can't remember the movie?
@Flyk I don't, but I also don't know if it's from the 80s or a comedy. As I said, prohibiting any kind of additional tag is an interesting idea that you might want to propose on its own. But I can't yet imagine the retagging mess, since every ID question has a friggin genre tag nowadays. But it might pay.
But in the same way I don't know it if I just write it in the question body. Wiriting a question that's totally wrong is just a natural danger of ID questions.
Oh, and I wasn't speaking about retagging the old questions, that might be achievable quite easily, but about retagging all the new questions, since people will misuse genre and language stuff if it's there (ok, decades could be completely removed then anyway, I guess).

@NapoleonWilson fear of mess is such a weak reason for not wanting to clean up mess
@NapoleonWilson I'm not sure it would be an issue
it would need planning out
but I reckon if you were careful with existing synonyms that you could achieve most of the cleanup by merging tags, after they've been edited
I suspect the easiest method would be to check every question tagged with one of the target removal tags
edit all of the ones that aren't identification questions
and then merge all of the tags into identification questions
probably aim to merge into identify-this-movie
since it's the larger tag
so edit all the other identify-this-tv-show-sound-movie-track-reel off the questions
my meta post will be downvoted into oblivion anyway

16:25
@Flyk That's very cool. I'm inclined to upvote it. However, I would rather like that proposal to ban genre tags from identification questions rather than the whole site, as it is done for language tags. Because I think general genre discussion (like some of the existing science-fiction, comedy and western things) is still a proper use-case. But I could as well just make that an answer.
make it an answer
you don't have to agree with everything to upvote it :p
it's not a post stating "this is how we're now doing it", is it? :)
Yeah, indeed.
and yeah it's a lot of work
but once it's done, it's done
and if you don't ever do it, it will always be a lot of work
an ever growing amount of work, in fact
Though, I fear it's one of those huge meta discussions that are so awfully broad that they won't reach a reasonable conclusion. But well, asking can't hurt.
@NapoleonWilson what about if I add some Jeff Atwood quotes about how meta tags are bad and how language tags in their current form are meta tags and how year tags are meta tags and how genre tags are meta tags
> If the tag can’t work as the only tag on a question, it’s probably a meta-tag.
Jeff Atwood on August 06, 2010

There are a few tags on Stack Overflow that have bugged me for a long time. Namely:

subjective best-practices beginner

best-practices beginner

beginner

But I could never quite articulate what, exactly, was wrong with these tags. It’s been bothering me more and more as time goes on. So much so, that about two months ago, I was compelled to ask on meta: Should we permanently remove the [subjective] tag?

There are some weak arguments in favor of keeping [subjective], but that’s about the best its proponents can muster. The arguments against it are much stronger. I felt Shog9 made the best case: …

that post basically says that I'm allowed to start removing tags already
(I'm not about to)
16:36
@Flyk Ugh, I don't completely agree with all those ramblings. Better not destroy such a great question (and I also think it's already long enough for many people to not read it at all). But well, it's your question.
well, I just don't want to be sitting around for a consensus that never arrives because our meta activity is so low
if the opinion against it is so low that should also be taken into consideration at some point
let's see what sort of traction it gets
and no I'm not a patient person
I never ever understood what the hell a "meta tag" is at all.
I love me my plot-explanation, analysis and identify-this-movie (the tag, not the question category ;-)). If those count as meta tags, then screw that blog post!
Basically
the way I see tagging
tags say "this is a <question type> question about <topic>"
plot-explanation is a question type
technical-issues is a question type (not a M&TV tag)
etc
<topic> is obviously the media name
the "genre" tag problem is identical to the genre tag problem on gaming.stackexchange.com
you don't tag questions about Doom with First-Person-Shooter
but you can ask questions about first-person-shooter
you wouldn't tag a question about the plot in the movie Rush (for example) with cars
because cars is a meta tag
except for questions about the animated movie, Cars
I suppose drama would work with casting
and horror would work with film-techniques
but I suspect that the correct use would be with the intended final product having a genre of horror being mentioned in the body
"I am currently working on a horror movie like some movie name and I want to know what how is the following effect achieved?"
sort of thing
16:54
I would count genre as <topic> in most cases then, I guess. I have a film-techniques question about horror movies, no?
Just like a movie tag, only broader and not for a single movie but a class of them.
@Flyk You haven't removed genre from your question completely yet, by the way.
Listing genre there and striking it through is also quite confusing. Afterall ID questions are tagged with this, that strikethrough doesn't fit there semantically. Rather than that you should probably just add a little sentence that says you're currently not concerned about genre.

Q: Name of an english speaking sketch show with rabbi the rabbit

Abdul Al HazredAbout 10 years ago I watched on German television channel ARTE an English speaking sketch show with undertitles. The English that was used was definitely not American English, but I am not sure if it was British English either. The show had an overall look of the 90s or early 2000s. One sketch ab...

Wow, you guys did a lot of discussing while I was out.
19:26
I just heard that Terry Pratchett died. RIP, Pterry.
Yes... that was a horrid day for me. I usually don't get too upset but that one bugged me for some reason.
@Catija Yes. I haven't read any of his book for a good many years, but I'm still quite upset.
He's never been as popular in the US, I think. Some of the people I talked to didn't know who he was at all.
@Catija That's hard to believe.
Then again, I was even more upset when Diana Wynne Jones died, and I couldn't find anyone who had heard of her. :-(
@FaheemMitha I've read her Chrestomanci and Derkholm series
19:35
@TrishLing That's nice. I've read most of her stuff. As a child, she was my favorite writer.
I mean, I know she has fans, it's just that I don't know any of them. It's a big world out there.
I think her visibility had improved in recent years. Thanks to the Potter Effect.
Still not used to this Lurid Red. Keep thinking I've died and gone to hell.
Pratchett is certainly more popular in the UK. I get the impression that everyone in the UK has read his books at some point. That may be inaccurate.
20:13
What the hell happened here?
@MattD You mean the Color of Red? It's a bit startling.
20:32
@FaheemMitha No, I mean the long discussion above all that.
@MattD Oh, all that stuff about tags? I haven't read it.
@MattD We're rocking the boat and making tags more useful.
@FaheemMitha I love how obsessed you are with the red site theme. I feel like you mention it every time I see you.
@Catija I don't think you love it, really.
@FaheemMitha I actually think that the red is very suitable for a film site. Red is a very common color for the movie industry... not sure why.
@Catija very common in what context?
20:47
@FaheemMitha I just see it used in film a lot... and in things that relate to films like theaters.
@Catija Hmm. I hadn't noticed that.
My favorite local theater has almost the same color red for their logo: drafthouse.com/austin and the interiors of their buildings use a lot of red tones, though often more wine-y reds.
@Catija Oh, you're the Austinian. I remember you.
That's an image of the interior of one of their locations.
@FaheemMitha Yes. :D Film is big here.
@Catija University town?
I mean, because it is a University town?
20:51
@FaheemMitha Yes and no. Austin is the State capital, so it's huge for that, too... the University of Texas has about 50K students with one of the top 10 film programs in the state.
@Catija Oh.
And Austin is considered the "third coast" city for film production. We just do a lot of it here... for example, Linklater lives here, so does Robert Rodriguez... both of them film a lot of stuff in town.
Well, I'll probably continue to exclaim inwardly at the Lurid Red, even if I don't say anything.
Linklater's upcoming feature That's What I'm Talking About and Rodriguez's From Dusk 'til Dawn series both shot/are shooting here.
@Catija I see. You mean (1) NY (2) LA (3) Austin?
20:53
@FaheemMitha Yep. Exactly.
Let's not forget "The Red Carpet"!!
^_^
I thought NC was popular. Dawson's Creek, One Tree Hill, all that jazz.
Good note, @TrishLing
Though Dawson's Creek was a piece of crap. Never watched One Tree Hill.
I only ever really watched One Tree Hill b/c I had a suitemate obsessed with it in college and the shared TV was in my (and my roommate's) room.
20:58
Shooting choices are often decided by what state/city is willing to offer the biggest incentives (tax rebates, discounts... etc)
For example, they shot a pilot for a show that was set in Niagara Falls, NY... here in Austin.
@Catija True. Certainly the case with NC. I heard they give great tax breaks.

Q: Are Americans the bad guys in Russian movies?

LernkurveContext In US movies, time and again, the bad guys end up being Russians. Examples: Scarecrow and Mrs. King 1980s US TV show Bad guys: Russian KGB The Last Ship 2010s US TV show Bad guys: Russian military That's at least a time span of over 30 years. Question How is it in Russian movie...

22:05
@Flyk No, not necessarily, I just said your meta question is confusing, since at some point ignore genre tags and at the end you mention them again. It's not consistent and I wasn't sure if that was intentional or not.
@Flyk Are you yet again single-handledly acting? Honestly, try to get a little more patient, please! That country thing's featured for a few hours and currently at +3. Please try to hold your horses a bit. We will tackle those things once the consensus is apparent but there's no need to act after just a few hours. Try to give the community a little time to see and discuss those things, otherwise I have serious doubts if your actions are in the best interest of the community.
