Q: Auto Comment Fill

CatijaHey everyone (sorry this is so long), I've recently discovered the amazing auto comment add-on that prevents one from having to retype comments constantly. Could we please get a list of recommended (but not required) base Auto Fill that we could personalize a bit if we liked (or not)? The defau...

Q: Saw this scene as a child (has stuck in my mind ever since) - I need to know what film or TV show it is

HamishI saw a scene from a movie or TV show as a kid and it's always stuck in my mind and for years I've always wanted to know what movie or TV show it belonged to. I have no information about this movie/program aside from this one and only scene I watched until my grandmother turned it over and I neve...

I see I'm not the only one who decided to finally get around to seeing Birdman this weekend.

@MattD Who else?

@NapoleonWilson... maybe he was basing that assertion on your question?

Oh, I saw it over a week ago.
I was just reminded of it by Wolfgang Schmitt's recent ramblings about the Best Pciture nominations as well as the Academy's obsession with "authenticity". Should have asked that question earlier, now it won't make the necessary +3 to win the challenge (and outbeat those trivia/dialogue-explanation questions). ;-(

I haven't actually been paying attention to the questions... I'm so bad about upvoting. I was peeking at your chat room with Paulster and felt guilty but I never know what to upvote. I have an abysmal rate of voting for both questions and answers on all of the sites I frequent.

2:14 AM
@Catija Well, of course you can only vote if you yourself feel confident that the vote is deserved. But sure, with 12 votes in a month compared against activity and vote gain, feeling guilty might already be a good idea. ;-) But to each his own.

@NapoleonWilson I didn't even realize there was a limited number of votes per day in the first place. I don't know what deserves a vote... or if it's all subjective.

Yeah, based it on your question. I'm watching Boyhood now.

@MattD We're actually getting ready to watch Boyhood right now. Just have to go grab a pizza.

@Catija Well, judge about the quality of the information and its presentation as best as you can. But of course it's up to you, there's no problem with having a higher quality standard and not upvoting everything. I just have a feeling that many people are simply oblivious to voting. But if you say "I carefully considered it and didn't deem the post worth a vote", then that's fine of course.

@N Yeah, I'll try to be better about it

2:22 AM
I'd rather like Apocalypse Now than Boyhood.
I'd actually like to ask a question about Boyhood, but that would feel inappropiate if I haven't seen the movie at all yet.

@NapoleonWilson What's the question?

Yeah, been using some survey app to earn Google Play credit. Lots of snow where I am so I didn't go anywhere today so I decided to rent Birdman and Boyhood ahead of tomorrow.

@Catija I'd like to ask the (admittedly quite broad) question in which specific ways the 12-years in production-thing contributed to the actual movie, be that narration-wise, acting-wise or in any other aspect. Since it is a very interesting experiment from a film-making viewpoint, but it would be more interesting in which way it was used (or even necessary) for actual narrative/atmospheric effect.

Q: Martial arts movie where man shoots darts/arrows out of stringed instrument?

MattDMoI saw this movie in the last 20-25 years - for some reason I think it was released in the 90s in the US (possibly early 2000s), but I'm not certain. Anyway, it's a martial arts movie based in China that as I recall had a good bit of comedy in it as well. A bunch of people live in a large building...

@NapoleonWilson I'm not sure I understand... could you show an example (doesn't necessarily have to relate directly).

2:33 AM
@Catija What you mean example, I want examples! ;-)
I mean I'd like some points to be pointed out where the whole 12 year thing contributed directly to the final outcome of the movie. Something that would not have worked or would not have the same impact if the whole movie was filmed in half a year.
For example if it helped to incorporate the changing zeitgeist in a much more natural and inconspicuous way.

@NapoleonWilson I don't think that's a bad question to ask, even if you haven't seen the film.

2:52 AM
Anyway, good night!

Q: Looking for home invasion movie title

Dave PalichatThe movie is about a young couple that breaks into a man's house and holds him hostage. I believe it had a one word title. In the bit of it I saw, I did not recognize any actor/actress. Possibly 5 years old? Unfortunately, that's about all I have for info. Someone I'm not in touch with had told m...

Q: Please help name this movie about a young couple who moves in together and everything goes downhill

ReinaJOkay, so I have been trying to figure out the name of this movie for YEARS!!! It is about a young (late-20s/early-to-mid-30s), white non-married couple who I believe are long-distance (different states) for at least some of their relationship until one moves in with the other. I think they had o...

Q: cant identify movie about outcast, small town, abused kid and baseball

OutcastSaw a movie when I was younger, think it was from the USA, probably in the 90s though it could have been a re-run at that point, it's been driving me nuts lately trying to remember what it was, I only remember a sequence of scenes. Basically as far as I know an outcast, (possibly ex con though no...

1:12 PM
@Catija Hmm, maybe I'll get around to watching it today. I forgot that it was already out on DVD, makes acquisition by "inofficial" means a bit easier, too. But of course you can ask and answer that question yourself, too. Afterall it is a great question.

Q: Pierrot Le Fou - exact french quote

LouisI can't make out the quote in french in Pierrot Le Fou which is translated to "To want something you have to be alive." Q: Identify Chinese cartoon about a boy and a nest of rats

Alexandros LiarokapisI recall seeing a Chinese cartoon about a boy that smelt gasoline, shrank down and then got into a nest of gasoline-addicted rats. It was pretty violent for a cartoon with rats using other rats with big teeth for weapons etc. If someone could help me identify this cartoon, it would be much apprec...

Q: Identify this movie with a black blob-like creature breaks out of some sort of chamber

JeffI have this vague memory of a film… could be 50s – 60s, black and white as I recall, possibly British. The scene that I remember most, takes place in some sort of industrial facility, could be like a refinery, there is this large chamber of tar or asphalt-like goo that is undulating… workers are ...

Q: Are there any known cases were a person that has appeared in one reality TV show is portrayed as having a different career in another reality TV show?

"Cops" where the portrayed individuals in jobs and situations that are not easily staged. What this question is about are re...

6:16 PM
@NapoleonWilson I think it's odd to ask questions yourself and already know the answer (and post it).

6:42 PM
@Catija I think in some cases people genuinely don't remember the answer when they're posting the question, but then suddenly remember/find the answer themselves afterwards.

@TrishLing That's totally cool... like with identify questions... or if someone actually put in some research and figured it out later on. In this case, I'd be asking the question with the answer already in my head.

7:05 PM
@Catija I agree, I'm also not the biggest fan of that as it has some strange by-taste and I for myself would always wonder if the topic discussed is univerally interesting enough to warrant that. But the general SE stance is that this is indeed encouraged, afterall there's even that little "answer it right away" check mark when asking a question for exactly that purpose.

Q: Identify movie please

User345768From 1990-2000. Kind of low cost. Drama kind of. Not well known movie, because it's not good according to critics. Can belongs to film club or to trash movie category. Not well known actors as far as I remember. From USA production and was shot in there too. One of main or main character was youn...

And afterall questions and answers are first and formost for the site and the greater good anyway and not for the asker (well, disregard ID for this, as with any serious discussion about the site's scope ;-)). So self-answered questions definitely have value and deserve appreciation if the question and answers are good.

7:19 PM
@NapoleonWilson I completely understand that. I also think it comes off looking like a rep grab.

Just not those, please. ;-)

Q: Can't remember the title

AnthonyThis was a movie I watched years ago, in the 1980s or 1990s. It was about a faith healer or some kind of healer. If I remember it was set in a rural area. The healer tried to help a kid who died under his care and I believe he was arrested. I have been trying to find this movie for years wit...

His rep can't go down... mine can :P

@Catija Well, rep is for good stuff and when the stuff is good it's well-deserved.

8:11 PM
@NapoleonWilson Are you talking about Boyhood?

8:35 PM
@MattD Indeed, I nearly planned to watch it but those 165 have repelled me a bit.

9:01 PM
@MattD I liked it a lot, too. I thought it was a gimmick but it really gives everything this natural feeling that would seem a bit forced if it were shot all at one time. If it had been written and then shot all at one time, moving into the future already knowing what it was, it would have felt really staged but this way it all felt really natural.
I generally wanted to ask about my last Meta question... meta.movies.stackexchange.com/questions/1662/auto-comment-fill
Does anyone use this add-on? Would anyone else actually like to see this list? I know there aren't any upvotes, but I wanted to see what people thought. Most meta posts at least get some commentary but this has none.

9:35 PM
@NapoleonWilson I started it at around 9PM last night knowing how long it was, and that was only about an hour after I finished Birdman.

This is why you shouldn't look at running times until you're already an hour into the film :P

9:48 PM
@Catija Hmm, I didn't really care about this one so much. I usually hand-craft all my comments anyway.
Well, usually I don't care, rather on the contrary, I think a good movie can't be long enough and I hate it when people are eschewed from a movie just because of long running time. But this one I don't feel too compelled to watch in the first place (at least currently), so it was just off-putting enough to stop me from watching it.
And now I opted against Die Hard 4 and Silver Linings Playbook and settled for a good old 384th rewatch of Scent of a Woman. And as always it was amazing, I love this movie.

@NapoleonWilson ... you must be totally excited with all of these ID questions ... :D You are keeping your cool with this, right? No automatic deletions or anything? Just playing with you!

@NapoleonWilson What's I think is helpful is that it fills in the base info and you can then edit it to fit the exact instance more closely.

I'm watching The Fifth Element at the moment. Love this movie, especially the practical effects and costumes.
While simultaneously enjoying my new MacBook Pro. Love this machine, can't get over how thin and light it is.

Corbin... Corbin... I ain't got no fire

Smoke you, man!
So do we want to run the Oscar chat tonight in a specific manner?
I wish Netflix had a "Play Random Episode" option. I want to watch Bob's Burgers, but I don't want to pick an episode.

Would it be worth it for me to create a voting form for the top 6-8 prizes?
I can do one on Survey monkey and post it somewhere.

That could be fun, but what are these prizes you speak of?

Just the different categories, sorry.
Didn't mean to get your hopes up.

Eh, I was just curious. Could be fun, I'd be game.

Q: Couple pretend to be strangers, he is going to chase her and if he catches her, he is going to take her right then and there

farhangfarhangfarAbout 30 years ago, I saw a movie on TV or cable TV. It was either in New York or Chicago. All I can remember is one scene. So, should it be who you Think will win or who you want to win? Or maybe I could do both and we could see what people say... and also ask which of the films people have actually seen. It could be soo much data!!!

Q: Movies with crazy, colourful costume design

DressmakerI'm working on a project where I need to identify movies with really colourful costumes, which seems to be surprisingly difficult to google. I'm looking in particular for dresses with lots of colours, the crazier, Fluro, bold, multi coloured, patterned or intricate the better. Anything patchwork,...

11:02 PM
@Paulster2 Well, I will remember some of the 2-3 liners and if they show no improvement I won't shy away from closing single-handedly.
@Catija Of course which I want to win, so keep an extra place for Interstellar and Gyllenhaal! I don't care if the Academy suddenly decides to limit it to 8 Best Picture nominations, the 9th one is clear anyway.

@Catija I posted my picks to Facebook for who I want to win, because I like it better that way.

But since I haven't seen much of the candidates at all, my opinion is pretty irrelevant anyway (as long as Zimmer wins, otherwise this friggin chat root will burn!).

Well the Oscars are basically rich people congratulating themselves, so it shouldn't be taken seriously either. :P

Q: identity movie about revenge

caudenaeI saw this movie like 10 years ago when I was a kid. It's about a kid and I think he was rich. One day his whole family get killed and he was hiding I think under the table or something. He was a witness off the killing. When he gets older he takes revenge and he kills everyone who was involved w...

Hmmm... I only get 10 questions.
What categories are people most interested in?

11:14 PM
Anything but the foreign film and short film categories. Could also lose things like production and costume design.

I wish there was a way to have two columns where you have to pick one in each column.

@Catija Well, I guess movie, direction, screenplay (Nightcrawler, yeah!), 4x actor, maybe score and cinematography.

I think that getting what movies people actually saw is interesting data, too... so maybe 9 categories and what you saw?

Since The Dark Valley didn't get into the final 5 I don't really care about Foreign Language either.
@Catija Nice idea, makes for better statistics, I guess.

Alrighty, time to run and get some beer before the big event.

11:21 PM
Yeah, time to switch from wine to whisky.
