Q: How do you find the right Path?

Fabian 'Mumbles' WiesnerNow, I understand that this might be the wrong place to be posting, and i apologize if it is, but I am out of ideas and out of my depth in trying to understand the system/path of becoming a DBA. I have just started to teach myself SQL and I really enjoy it, so naturally the first question that c...

@JackDouglas Yeah, I noticed. Why my question at the Meta-Tavern is ignored?
in Tavern on the Meta on Meta Stack Overflow Chat, yesterday, by ypercube
I've searched the meta but can't find any related question. I see a user who systematically edits almost all questions that he answers, adding useless tags. Occasionally he edits the question in a useful way (formatting/spelling) but still, the tags are added, too. Is this accepted behaviour?

Nice joke with the "chat with an expert" thing on SO
@Lamak It is more fun than what happened last night. There were several users who decided to make their profiles exactly like Jon Skeet

Q: Jon Skeet impersonators running rampant?

Travis JAt first I thought it was amusing because it is April 1st and thought it was another one of stackoverflow's attempts to troll me. Ha ha. Does anyone know if there is a built-in stored procedure in SQL 2008 for scripting out any DB object. I know about "sp_helptext" for stored procedures, but what about tables, etc?
JNK
JNK
@gunr2171 Don't think so, you will need to either use the generate scripts gui in SSMS or the scripter class in SMO
@JNK problem is that I can't use SMO (can't do threading with SMO), and the end point is c#
JNK
JNK
@swasheck nice, didn't know
@gunr2171 you can use SMO in powershell
but it looks like I was wrong anyways!
@swasheck if i use the id of a stored procedure, it works (however, gives it to me in one line). using a table's id returns "null"
16:05
it's not for tables
@gunr2171 what @Marian said ... sorry i didnt read the second line of your post :S
@Marian and that's the point. is there a way to script tables without SMO. I know about the existance of powershell, but no idea how to use it
JNK
JNK
I don't think you can script out the table definition without SMO or the gui
smo is incredibly easy for this stuff in PS though
I could believe that, but this is a side project that i don't have the luxury of learning that system.
JNK
JNK
16:08
it's like a 10 line script to script out all the objects to their own file

@gunr2171 This is a script I did some years ago that will reverse engineer a fair amount of a database schema. You might be able to adapt the queries to do what you want, although it is by no means comprehensive.
If you want the text of stored procedures or user-defined functions you can get that from sys.sql_modules fairly trivially.

Quick question: does parameterizing a like guarantee a table scan?
For example:
DECLARE @Criteria VARCHAR(100)
SET @Criteria = '123%'

SELECT *
FROM dbo.Device d
WHERE
d.SerialNumber LIKE @Criteria
Replacing d.SerialNumber LIKE @Criteria with d.SerialNumber LIKE '123%' uses an index instead of scanning...
@MichaelFredrickson Doesn't look like it. I'm testing in AdventureWorks and getting index seeks.
@MikeFal Hmmm... interesting.. OK, thanks for checking..
17:06
here's the query I tried:
DECLARE @Criteria VARCHAR(100)
SET @Criteria = 'br%'

SELECT *
FROM [Person].[Person]
WHERE
LastName LIKE @Criteria
@MichaelFredrickson any implicit conversions done?
That column serialNumber is also varchar and not nvarchar?
@Marian Good question... yea, both are VARCHAR(100)
@MichaelFredrickson It won't because you don't have a wildcard on the left side.
a parameterized sp_executesql is also using the index...
@MichaelFredrickson what is your index def and how many rows do you have in the table and how many are between '1%' and 'A%'
17:09
@MichaelFredrickson Perhaps this will help.
I guess someone told my Sql Server that today is April Fools...
@PolishPrince I haven't actually mentioned my Stackoverflow account in a job interview yet.
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Don't think that would be a wise "strength" to mention
@swasheck CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX IX_Device_SerialNumber ON dbo.Device (SerialNumber)
@PolishPrince was looking at Rob's article now :-)
17:11
@PolishPrince I don't often get interviewed by people likely to read SO, I suspect. That may change in the future.
@MichaelFredrickson sp_helpstats 'dbo.Device';
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells I don't see it likely to change. Who knows how much longer stackoverflow will be around
@swasheck There are about 300k rows total... 70k of which start with a digit >= 1
@MichaelFredrickson stats?
My confusion comes from why when parameterized, it scans...
17:14
@PolishPrince Hard to say. Although its popularity has driven the signal/noise ratio down it still appears prominently in google search results.
@swasheck Stats are ugly... like 50 rows... a lot of other statistics in the table...
@swasheck but there are stats for the SerialNumber column...
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Feels to me like the quality of answers/questions is going down
@PolishPrince It is - now it's hit the mainstream it gets questions from everyone, right down to bozos. There are probably as many good questions on it as there always were, but they're drowned out in a sea of drivel.
@MichaelFredrickson guess what I found :-)
Anyone else here get accepted into Glass Explorers?
17:23
@MichaelFredrickson The "auto create stats" part of SQL Server will create them if that column is searched, so it's normal.
@MichaelFredrickson last update?

@swasheck drop database? better..

@Marian TRUNCATE CTO
@MikeFal hmm, never had that power. Some would deserve it, though :-).
17:50
We should gather all funny "drop database" stories somewhere.. Maybe on a blog post.
So... changing SELECT * to SELECT SerialNumber changes the table scan to an index seek...
@MichaelFredrickson Any changes in the estimate rows from changing this?
First thought would be that it would only get rid of the key lookups.

Hey DBA's. I was looking at Brent Ozar's recommended books and want to see if anyone had any recommendations for DBA books. The reason I'm asking is because I've already read SQL Server 2008 Query Performance Tuning Distilled (which Brent considers "advanced") so I feel like the actual levels aren't accurate.
@PolishPrince do you mean "advanced" doesn't really mean advanced?
You @prince.. you should change the name to PrinceOfDatabases :-)
@Marian I have 0.005% dba experience
@jcolebrand The book he put under advanced didn't seem "advanced" to me
