Love that clip
@billinkc me too
21:18
Thanks @Michael
@AaronBertrand how do you want feedback on Beta?
@swasheck you can e-mail me
@AaronBertrand also, does SQL Sentry only do direct sales?
New information for when you find someone with dupe accounts, have them try this: dba.stackexchange.com/help/user-merge
@swasheck hmm, not sure I follow, what other sales vectors?
21:23
beta?
@AaronBertrand CDW, SHI, etc. sorry. i'm all new and stuff to this
@swasheck do you mean does Amazon resell our software at a discount?
@AaronBertrand haha. no. our purchasing process is upside down and backward. they have vendor relationships and such and they prefer to go through them. i can make it happen out-of-proc but it takes more "doin'"
@swasheck yeah, no, we do not have any reseller avenues
@swasheck sorry
@Zane plan explorer Pro vNext
@AaronBertrand no worries. it is what it is - just wanted to make sure i dont look foolish when i submit this request
21:25
Gotcha. I just started playing with plan explorer free today.
@Zane if you play with it too much you'll go blind (from the awesomeness)
Waka Waka
@Zane always happy to hear your thoughts on it
I'm still watching some of the intro videos and it's not even installed on my DEV box yet. There are certainly some features that I'm pretty much already in love with though.
I'm a pretty huge fan of the cumulative cost feature.
@bluefeet It's snowing! Specifically... on the east side of town..

Been using plan explorer more recently
its noice
@MichaelFredrickson seriously?
@MichaelFredrickson Better bring in your roof rats!
@bluefeet It's not falling where I'm at... but I can see the snow on the superstition mountains east of here..
@MichaelFredrickson i am in a building with no windows so I will have to wait till I leave

@bluefeet You work in a bunker?

or a casino?
@JNK pretty much
from the outside it looks like a prison
Ugh I really need to start going through the microsoft certification process.
Buy the ... "clever name here" but basically it's a do-over. Costs a bit more than a straight exam but less than a full price retake. Review the high level points, maybe take a practice exam to get familiar with the process then walk in with no prep and see how you do
They also discount for multiple exams so 3 tests is cheaper than 3 singles

I'm doing SQL Server dev cert soonish
Abandoning the discussion, not sure what his point is. It's a silly scenario anyway which I wouldn't use but maybe once or twice in a lifetime:
My issue is that the score is so high that this looks like de facto answer to the question in the title. It took me 10 minutes to build a test app to determine that it wasn't (maybe that is my fault for not being so good at SQL Server). I wouldn't have down voted the answer if you had been clear that this answer does not actually have anything to do with transactions, but everything to do with sessions: context info is persisted between transactions in the same session. — The Mouth of a Cow 10 mins ago
I'll poke the bear
I've thought about registering ipokethebear.com and using that instead of my name for my domain stuff
22:15
@AaronBertrand I just don't understand how the transactions really come into it and what problem he was having. If he wanted to disable the trigger on a transaction, any connections participating in the transaction could use the same technique, ensuring that they set that context when they wanted the trigger to be disabled and not when they didn't want it to be disabled. There is no native way to attach it to a transaction, so the "scope" is user-determined.
@CadeRoux the guy who's mouthing off is just reading the question title (which is probably inaccurate and should probably be edited) and complaining that your answer doesn't answer the question title (which does not accurately reflect the actual question). If he doesn't get it, he doesn't get it, move on. :-)
@CadeRoux you got a +1 from me so it's a net win, right?
@AaronBertrand I have suggested an alternative title, which I hope will be acceptable to him. I guess when he posted the comment I thought there was some special caveat about how he was doing his transactions - but the answer would still be relevant as far as I can tell.
@swasheck Yes, apparently a few others piled on from here probably - +88 rep on a 4 year old answer...
@CadeRoux so like I said, move on. You're way ahead, nobody is going to be able to see that down-vote and it's only relevant to that person because he didn't read.
@MichaelFredrickson I literally just hit rain, hail, snow, thunder and lightening on my drive home
22:26
@bluefeet you're not still driving, right?
@AaronBertrand Done
@swasheck nope I am home
I know this one is already closed but seriously someone posted this as a question?

Gik25I want toad to format this text as follow AS IS AND flh_punto_erogazione IN ( '2607649056', '3201639162', '2607237274', '8000222270', '2602063519', '1400106868', '8000228653', '8000989667', '6108647931', '1109261592', '1110312178') TO BE AND flh_punto_erogazione IN ( '2607649056', '320163916...

amazing, you have just formatted the query in your desired result :DJW. 11 hours ago
hahahahahaha
22:41
@bluefeet I'm sure you could answer it with some PIVOT wizardry
is it me or are the dbareactions getting better?
@ypercube possibly but I am not trying
i'm having problems with a google search
or even a bingle search
i need to be able to justify why a virtual SQL server is a bad thing
nevamind ... change the keywords and off we go
@swasheck summon COTW
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells why wouldnt i want to virtualize SQL Server (in "business leader"-ese, please)?
22:48
@swasheck It isn't. A badly planned VM SQL server is.
@MarkStorey-Smith go on ...
@swasheck @COTW has been particularly badly burned by incompetent wonks dishing out ETL test beds and DW VMs... stinky.
my biggest issue has been clustering/ALUA on ESXi 4.5 and how the beasts handle RDM
@MarkStorey-Smith i'm sure i could be one of those incompetent wonks
@swasheck Adequately sizing a VM for a SQL Server, outside the nasty spikey resource consumption of OLAP work, is not much different to sizing a physical server. It's got to be big enough for the job in hand
@MarkStorey-Smith so you're saying that the "never virtualize SQL Server" is actually "it depends"
22:53
@swasheck Jonathan Kehayias is probably the best source for virtualising SQL
@MarkStorey-Smith good tip, thanks.
@swasheck I'm going to try do the SQLSkills IE3 this year (did 1 and 2 the past two years), primarily as it has a couple of days on virtualisation
@MarkStorey-Smith that would be nice. i couldnt even get the bossman to spring for Intersections or PASS. I didn't even bother with Bits ;)
