@MikeWalsh i say that's false ... you crazy SQL MVP
@swasheck nah. MVP doesn't signify expertise :-) I've plenty to learn about plenty (in SQL and in the Bible.. Actually everywhere, come to think of it)
imma bout to punch oracle in the mouf
@swasheck sounds like it was fafter
@swasheck it doesn't help
if it did, i'd be out of a job long ago

Q: Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 1 Incorrect syntax near ')'

dcoughlerI'm trying to create a stored procedure that contains a dynamic query. My reason for using a dynamic query is that I need to pass between 0 and 3 parameters to the same query. Right now, when I run the procedure, I get the following error: Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 1 Incorrect synta...

20:07
@bluefeet are you going to sort through that?
@swasheck I looked at it but decided that I did not want to pull my hair out today
@bluefeet it's actually quite simple
@swasheck it is almost a TL;DR post
nvm ...
@bluefeet good gracious - that looks like the code we have! ;0
20:14
@rfusca it is pretty ugly
i like it when they take off and you dont hear from them again - it's awesome
@swasheck its like a digital ding dong ditch
@swasheck Yes, it's almost like the people answering the question are more interested in the post than the user facing the problem
@rfusca @Lamak well, it's actuall a fairly simple resolution if we get the correct information
@swasheck oh, for sure
20:17
if the proc compiled, then the dynamic sql is probably > 4000 char
if it didnt, homie needs to figure out his groupings
and many text editors (and the newer SSMS) will highlight parentheses for you
@swasheck yeap, that's very likely
i really want to punch the last dba who left this laptop with 8 different Oracle home installs
@rfusca given my current experience ... i can see why that happened
i cant find the deinstaller for 11g anywhere
since the error points to line 1, there's nothing wrong there on the procedure....so, most likely is his dynamic sql
even when i run the downloaded deinstaller it doesnt clean everything out
@Lamak exactly
@Lamak what's really sad is how many related questions there are
20:21
@swasheck hm, never really look at those....but, yes, there are a lot
Me: Why does everything have to be so complicated when just trying to do simple things in Oracle? Them: Oracle is that way because it can run on any OS and is portable. Me: So it's a worst common denominator database.

Q: select category list from t1, then select sum from t2 which has category list given to each data

MogliI have 2 tables I am working with. Table 1 has 10 categories, entries do not change. unless I change. Cat_NO | Cause 1 = Animal 2 = Bird 3 = Bear 4 = Dog 5 = Snake 6 = Human 7 = Cow 8 = Car 9 = Fire 10 = Rain Table 2 has data coming randomly wh...

So far I've written SELECT Cause from Table1

Q: Moderators should not be allowed to moderate questions they have participated in answering

StingyJackTitle says it all. I had a situation where a moderator answered a question and then marked another answer (that said the same thing, but more directly) for conversion to comment because they felt "its length was not up to community standards". While I think it is important to maintain some set ...

@Lamak i'm confused by the taxonomy. isn't a bear an animal?
20:26
I believe so, not sure though ;-). Dogs are definitely animals
@swasheck portable between wallets, too
@CadeRoux by the way, what is Oracle Wallet?
@Lamak despite all his rage
@swasheck fat
@rfusca or empty
@CadeRoux depends on if its their wallet or mine I suppose
20:28
@CadeRoux I think that parameters on the creation of a procedure can be (and I always do) enclosed them on parenthesis
not when executing them, though
JNK
JNK
@Lamak Agreed. I commented on that and got shouted at
since the entire premise of the Q is based on misunderstanding what happened
@Lamak yeah ... you can
@JNK I believe that those comments were deleted, I didn't see them. But, the poster didn't seem to acknowledge that CasperOne didn't deleted his answer
JNK
JNK
The only thing I posted that was deleted was aimed at Geochet
@Lamak Really? That mustn't work on some other dialect, because I always leave them off on procs and on on functions.
20:30
@CadeRoux Yeap, on SQL Server at least
@CadeRoux it's not documented, but you can create an SP with params in parens
@JNK well, he had some very acid comments. As I said, a lot of bitterness over there
MSDN has them not in parens, though
@swasheck Also he has his NOCOUNT in an odd place between the AS and BEGIN. That also could be it.
@swasheck I guess that can also be allowed, but I never do it that way.
@CadeRoux yeah ...
create procedure test
as
SET NOCOUNT ON
BEGIN
select * from sys.tables
GO
fails
my bad
missing the "end"
create procedure test
as
BEGIN
SET NOCOUNT ON
select * from sys.tables
END
GO
@CadeRoux i'm convinced he's got a rogue ' in the dynamic query ... OP is not using QUOTENAME ... and OP could just have a dynamic query that is > 4000 characters
@swasheck Yeah - probably a parenthesis in one of the lists which are concatenated into his query. The whole thing should probably be done to table-valued parameters and no need for dynamic SQL.
20:50
@JNK @Lamak i'm just going to wade in and drop a comment that says "your hate has made you powerful. Now fulfill your destiny and take casperOne's place at Shog9's side."

@swasheck To wich particular user?, it fits to many on that post
@swasheck I think that this is the comment that bugged me the most
"There is no problem, please move on." -- Nothing to see here peasant. Don't look behind the curtain. — GEOCHET 3 hours ago
done ...
@swasheck You are like my spokesperson
21:07
@Lamak i wanted to also toss in, "speaking as one of those peasants, of course"
21:18
@swasheck It seems very appropriate
21:40
I love this, its an ms-access question and they post an answer with the suggestion to move the data to mysql or sql-server to use a cursor
-2
A: Query to join tables, void duplicates

Drew Piercehopefully your data is in mysql or sql server. you need to use a cursor. here is the solution http://pastie.org/5364183

22:35
Cursors are always the solution
22:51
The whole comment-story has deteriorated to a help-desk.
23:03
i stand by my official stance
screw oracle
ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor
:) i keed i keed. i'm sure it's a great product, i'm just too incompetent to use it
