Wait...
Did he sign off?
02:03
No
Oh good, that's why I'm here
@HannahVernon That's returned from an nvarchar(32) field? Have you tried it on a Windows instance or just 🤢nix?
I'm not a puppet!

So uninstalling SSMS 18 broke SQL Prompt
I had to manually re-register textmgrp.dll to get it to work
Of course, I tried a repair on SSMS 19 first (and a reboot), which did not help at all
Still finding a few things that SSMS 19 didn't copy across
Always some drama with these things
The dll was in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 19\Common7\IDE\Automation by the way
I've seen it referenced somewhere. I guess it's a known issue
so when you're switching over to the ADS?
09:51
SQL Assistant has an interface for re-registering the tool with whatever editor you are using
@Zikato Did you notice the last contribution there at all
@Zikato Next beach day in Hell
My obviously unrealistic expectation was that installing SSMS 19 side-by-side with SSMS 18 would go smoothly, and eventual uninstallation of 18 would not cause problems.
@PaulWhite yeah. but I didn't read it since it has 2 stars out of 5
I hope you flagged it

10:35
i've run into that a couple times, but only with the most recent 19 builds
the first 2-3 were fine
Yes, it seems specific to 19.0.2 (and older versions in history but not 19.x)
sort of a weird thing to suddenly stop working
but what do i know about computer science
I do understand their desire to get away from the special VS shell and complicated mess that SSMS became over the years. Incrementally releasing a worse replacement is probably the best option they had. I still won't use it until it's a direct replacement of everything I use SSMS for.
In the same way I understand why Extended Events exist and Profiler is only begrudgingly kept on life support.
I do try ADS from time to time, but it always disappoints. I try it less often as time goes by.
i've stopped trying with it entirely
It's weird because current Visual Studio is a lovely place to work with a very nice upgrade experience. It feels polished in the exact same way ADS isn't.
10:47
whenever i check the change notes nothing had been added that makes it more attractive
They get very excited about very slowly releasing things that SSMS already does better.
mom get the camera
I was asked for my input on adding execution plans to ADS. I found no way to frame a polite response.
I mean SSMS literally does it quite well already. Just do that.
nice that they asked you
Not really
10:49
i like when people still try to sell me on the plan explorer plugin for ads
like have you used it lately
It's like the emails I get from people v excited for me to contribute to their project that has no design and (more importantly) no budget.
@ErikDarling I succeeded in installing it a couple of times after much trial and error. It was not worth it.
@PaulWhite yeah, i get asked to review a lot of software for free
"we'll give you a complimentary license"
Yeah, well this is genuine consultancy-level work with a budget sufficient for a cup of coffee and maybe a plain biscuit
One gets kinda good at saying "no", but I still don't enjoy it
likely by people who have never done a day of consulting in their life

They'll happily pay 100K a month for cloud services tho
Anyway, yeah ADS continues to suck

yeah
it's a good idea
@PaulWhite Steam & Stream
> Each contained availability group has its own master and msdb system databases, named after the name of the availability group. For example, in contained availability group MyContainedAG, you will have databases named MyContainedAG_master and MyContainedAG_msdb.
how can i shrink my aoag

be sure to wait at low priority
11:16
all this chatter about shrinking tempdb
wait until they find out what happens when you restart sql server
> Currently, the following SQL Server features are not supported with a contained availability group:
* SQL Server Replication of any type (transactional, merge, snapshot, etc.).
Another win
slam dunk
No log shipping as a target either, though
couldn't take the competition
It's a bit of a hack though really isn't it
11:28
how so
The whole master-or-msdb--but-not-really thing
Doesn't feel like a natural solution blending easily into an extensible architecture
I think I first saw checks for contained (master/msdb) in 2019 debugging
There's heaps of special case code all over the show
I wonder what was missed
Early days to hear about things using the 'wrong' master/msdb perhaps
Link only answers are frowned upon because the links could disappear. It would make your answer better if you posted the essentials or good features here and refer to the links as references. — Rohit Gupta 19 mins ago

could be worse, could still be a fucking comment but ok
@ErikDarling Like external tables, Java, and whatnot
11:34
I just found it amusing
Live look at SQL Server 2023 preview
wait until they decide to rename the master database
or memory-optimize it
but yes I'm surprised it hasn't been renamed in the current times
I suppose they'll've found some of the name dependencies just recently
I bet they don't name it primary
oh just ctrl + f for master and replace it with main in the code
it'll go fine i'm sure
11:46
yep, main is famously unused in code

Q: Dynamically Pruning a Table

EchilonI have a table which is undergoing regular schema changes. It has around 80 columns currently. To refresh our dev environment, we copy the prod DB, prune it and anonymize it. I have a procuedure which is run after the prod DB is copied to zap anything older than 6 months. It does this using this:...

does anyone know of a way to generate sql dynamically
what would you call that
if you had to give sql generated dynamically a name
tough one
Sounds like a case for *.
i'm sure jd will have a comment for them
@JoshDarnell i hear that's bad for performance because sql has to look up metadata
12:45
@JoshDarnell heh was thinking the same thing.
@ErikDarling it went very smoothly and completed in about 2 hours. One of the 12 or so databases refused to cooperate, so the secondary copies needed to be removed from both AGs, then I restored the log backups that were being dutifully taken during the upgrade, and simply added it back in to the AG. I did the DAG secondary AGs secondary instance first, of course, then the primary of the secondary DAG, then the secondary of the primary DAG AG, and finally the primary.
But too tired to comment, no worries Erik. 🙃
@HannahVernon does automatic/direct seeding work with a dag, or do you have to do all that manually still?
@ErikDarling Easy, add more cores for metadata lookups.
spoken like a true licensing rep
12:52
@ErikDarling automatic seeding worked like a dream for the most part
I have a query I use in sqlcmd mode that shows the status of the seeding restores, it cool to see it work
what's your deal with sqlcmd

adapters?

i feel like there's a affect/effect difference here
fewer/less
Nobody really knows
but i'm lazy
Noun: adapter (plural adapters)
  1. One who is capable of adapting to differing situations.
  2. He was an able adapter, and could easily adjust to the differences when the company changed ownership.
  3. One who adapts a thing, e.g. a play.
  4. The critic gave rave reviews to the adapter of the ancient play, who worked to give the text more relevance to the modern day.
  5. A device or application used to achieve operative compatibility between devices that otherwise are incompatible.
(5 more not shown…)
carry on
13:36
Noun: adaptor (plural adaptors)
  1. Alternative form of adapter
  2. adaptor n (plural adaptoare)
  3. adapter
Verb: adaptor
  1. first-person singular present passive indicative of adaptō
early adapter
That's a great def
> operative compatibility

A: Does SQL Service need restart after NW adapter teaming?

Sean Gallardy My question is - Do we need to restart SQL services or server itself for these changes to take effect from SQL perspective (like in AG sync)? You shouldn't, no, since they aren't presented as two different interfaces. This should be taken care of by the driver for the adaptors - do whatever its...

Sean missed an opportunity there
@PaulWhite LOL nice one on that edit to my reply to your reply to me
@ErikDarling but sqlcmd mode is just so easy
if you say so
I was about to share my script with you, but it has capitalized data types, and I don't want to look more silly than I already do.
does ads support sqlcmd mode?
Who could know the answer to that without actually using ADS
and who would do that

maybe one of the professional developers in here would know
but it might be a selling point if it doesn't
actually it does make a rather nice runbook

@SeanGallardy yah I'm probably stupid like that in many ways
