/*Starting place*/
SELECT TOP (1)
    @NextBatchMax  = SQ1.id
FROM
(
    SELECT TOP (1000) aia.id
    FROM dbo.as_i_am AS aia
    WHERE aia.id > @LargestKeyProcessed
    ORDER BY aia.id ASC
) AS SQ1
ORDER BY SQ1.id DESC;
Something like that.

You’re wild

and free
SELECT @NextBatchMax = aia.id
FROM dbo.as_i_am AS aia
WHERE aia.id > @LargestKeyProcessed
ORDER BY aia.id ASC
OFFSET 1000 ROWS
FETCH NEXT 1 ROW ONLY;
I guess that would work?
/*Starting place*/
SELECT @NextBatchMax = MAX(SQ1.id)
FROM
(
    SELECT TOP (1000) aia.id
    FROM dbo.as_i_am AS aia
    WHERE aia.id > @LargestKeyProcessed
    ORDER BY aia.id ASC
) AS SQ1;
Better
Anyway, you get the idea
...
Also:
DECLARE Batch CURSOR LOCAL DYNAMIC SCROLL FOR
SELECT AIA.id FROM dbo.as_i_am AS AIA ORDER BY AIA.id ASC;
OPEN Batch;
FETCH FIRST FROM Batch;
FETCH RELATIVE 1000 FROM Batch;
-- etc.

12:40 AM
oh the offset fetch one is interesting
i guess we can forget about sql server <2012

Embrace the power of cursors

i uh
i've tried
i think i'm bad at them

Almost everyone is
I don't really know why
It's sad they don't work on custard column store
Leaving that swipe typing error because I actually prefer it

12:56 AM
same
i think the problem with cursors is that everyone hears they're bad, so no one bothers with them
my problem is that i have no idea when they'd be better than what i'm doing
or what to do with them

1:45 AM
maybe we need a blog series on such a thing

No one reads any more, you know that

1 hour later…
3:02 AM
I only read what you write

2 hours later…
5:28 AM
morning
mhhhhm custard column store

3 hours later…
8:13 AM
@ypercubeᵀᴹ I've added another note, thanks

8:30 AM
Morning
I'd love to have some custard. Can't remember the last time I had some.
Bird's I think

morning

8:49 AM
That's the last custard I had.

now I'm Hungary

@PaulWhite all four of them? (I'm glad I am having a scone right now, otherwise I'd hate you)
@Zikato hm

@dezso Nah that's just a picture from the store my wife went to. We had half of one each
I was really trying to find a picture of several of them stacked so I could say I had been to the custard column store
The custard square looks more row store I have to say

muhaha
who would stack custard anyway

SQL Server, apparently

9:03 AM
@Zikato I had to czech your profile to see why you are so brave to make such a joke
2

to be fair, I only know two Hungarian words
rettenthetetlen and azonnal

not bad, not bad
I am trying to imagine the situation when someone is learning their first two Hungarian words, and one is rettenthetetlen
so far without much success

presumably, he learnt more than two words, but those stuck somehow

I've been told that it's the longest Hungarian word

https://www.newzealand.com/uk/feature/the-longest-place-name-in-new-zealand/

9:13 AM
does it mean anything?

yes, it's basically a short story in a word
> The summit where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, the slider, climber of mountains, the land-swallower who travelled about, played his kōauau (flute) to his loved one
Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu is a hill near Porangahau, south of Waipukurau in southern Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. The height of the hill is 305 metres (1,001 ft). The hill is notable primarily for its unusually long name, which is of Māori origin; it is often shortened to Taumata for brevity. It has gained a measure of fame as it is the longest place name found in any English-speaking country, and possibly the longest place name in the world, according to World Atlas. The name of the hill (with 85 characters) has also been...

Does this feel like a liberal democracy to you

Aug 10 at 6:06, by Zikato
@ErikDarling Democracy was a mistake

10:26 AM
@Zikato well, definitely not the longest, megszentségtelenítettétek pops to my mind first. There are rather artificial constructs adding a lot more to this, as well.

A chairde - Morning all!

@Zikato on the other hand, 'rettenthetetlen' is the most melgibsony Hungarian word

Interesting. My source was another Hungarian, so I won't argue there

@ypercubeᵀᴹ - fixed problems with that code. Liked your implemenation of range + GREATEST/LEAST - used it (with modification) in one of my solutions (with acknowledgement) - that part of the code was the reason for my earlier confusion - now cleared up! Am "translating" your solution for my data simulation - learning loads. One thing (and it's quite possible I missed something) is that I can't make a TSTZRANGE a primary key. I can do it with an INT4RANGE - so why not with a TSTZRANGE?
I believe that I'm ellenallhatatlan! :-)

one cannot kill a process without resetting all its tcp connections in any modern OS that has the notion of process — fraxinus 5 hours ago
I so love the HNQ effect. Everyone has an opinion and feels compelled to share it.
Thank goodness a modern OS would never crash.
There really should be two options under each post

1. Add a suggestion that aims to clarify or improve the post
2. Submit your hot take (will be redirected to NUL)

11:07 AM
silently
There should be downvotes for comments. One you get into negative numbers, the pressure will force the user to delete.

Downvotes for comments is the worst idea I've ever heard
Maybe nested comments comes close
If you want those things, go back to Reddit

@Vérace I'm obviously missing the start of this story, but: dbfiddle.uk/yOnbeZp2

Just deleted an 'answer' telling someone they were wrong 7 years ago in a side comment they left. It never ends.

11:56 AM
have you also deleted where they were wrong? not quite sure what that poor aaron did wrong

yes, it was irrelevant to begin with
a silly remark about MySQL
79,945 comments deleted so far

wow
all manually reviewed?

yes, though to be fair it includes comments moved to chat
I wonder if they send out a gold comment coffin at 100k
I'm sure I could find a spot for that

Do they send out other awards?

oh yes, I got a Tesla when I handled my 10,000th flag
up to 14,937 now so p excited to see what comes at 15k
(no, there aren't any awards)
but I find it charming you could believe they would

12:15 PM
well Youtube sends them for subscriber count, so why not
or Microsoft MVP awards

Because SO is SO

My parents had a Tesla, when I was young
2

very nice
battery-powered?

I don't recall

I'm going to imagine it could be run off a car battery

12:21 PM
TESLA (originally named after Nikola Tesla, later explained as abbreviation from TEchnika SLAboproudá, which means "low-current technology") was a large, state-owned electrotechnical conglomerate in the former Socialist Republic of Czechoslovakia. The company was established as Elektra on 18 January 1921 and renamed TESLA on 7 March 1946. TESLA had a state-sponsored monopoly on electronics production in Czechoslovakia, and produced nearly all electronic products in the country until 1989. Many subsidiaries were created from the original brand, including those at Liptovský Hrádok, Hradec Králové...
> TESLA (originally named after Nikola Tesla, later explained as abbreviation from TEchnika SLAboproudá, which means "low-current technology")
I heard they had to make up a backronym because the regime didn't like it being named after Nikola Tesla

Seems like they had a czechered history
My first TV was black & white with rotary tuning and a wire coat hanger as an aerial

@Zikato I still own a Tesla (turntable). Should repair it and re-listen all the LPs.

We had a colour TV downstairs tho

@PaulWhite this one?

ha ha, man I loved my Etch-a-Sketch
I also had a red tractor
(not battery powered)

12:33 PM
how about sheep?

well the grass does look short, but I don't remember any sheeps
perhaps they only came at night

That's good digital photo quality. My scanned photos look like crap

Yeah, I have thousands in need of preservation really
I'll get right onto that
Next time I'm up in the loft
that pram looks like it was manual too

Q: Is it possible to add some procedures and functions to a custom SQL Server docker file?

Ali EXEI have this Dockerfile to customize a SQL Server image for our developers: FROM mcr.microsoft.com/mssql/server:latest ENV PATH="${PATH}:/Company/Commands/DatabaseContainer" ENV ACCEPT_EULA=Y ENV MSSQL_SA_PASSWORD=************ ENV MSSQL_PID=Express USER root And it works well. However, we have so...

You can't even create an empty database in docker file
Anyway, I'm off to my farewell party. See you later

can't you? (pardon my ignorance, I'm a Postgres guy)

12:41 PM
what the hell is a docker
still no sheep
I'm second left top row btw

@dezso : Thanks for your input (and, since we're speaking Hungarian on the Heap today, köszi!). The beginning of the story is here - it's a really deadly question - I have three answers so far - and I'm thinking of using a multi range type as well - haven't used these before - so feel free to join in on the fun and games - I'm planning on benchmarking the solutions.
You can see that I've deleted a previous answer - since sorted - hope to repost this evening! There's also @ypercube's solution, so that makes 4 so far. I've learnt a lot - but obviously back to drawing-board on the PK! Basically, I'm treating this as a learning exercise - and boy, have I! Szia!

@PaulWhite what a proper little lad you were.

@ErikDarling Still am, really

@PW, I know you don't like being pinged - but sometimes it's difficult to follow who's replying to whom! Maybe a feature that allows a reply either with or without a ping - and where one could set a default might be an idea?

yeah with all the development chat gets

12:46 PM

It'd be awesome to be able to time travel back to the 70s for a week or two
Be that kid again
Simpler times
I could invent databases
Or something useful
I'd have to take my 80s & 90s music collection tho

even better
you could kill that codd fella and databases would never exist

Have you checked the docs? — AMtwo 3 mins ago
Comments like that piss me off a bit.
Many answers are to be found in the documentation. Would you have appreciated that sort of reply when you were learning? If you don't have time to write a proper answer, do something else.

there is a chance they haven't
and it could be clarified there
but a quote would be useful with the link
which makes it a comment answer
turns into a whole thing

It's almost no more effort to quote from the link in an answer
Meanwhile people writing a proper answer might be dissuaded from doing so because the comment's there
I feel fairly certain, had they read that documentation page, they wouldn't be asking
Whatever

i dunno
i'm reading the documentation page and i'm not sure what to think
but you know me

It's a short step away from posting a lmgtfy link imo
Perhaps I'm just grumpy because I hate people

it's rude to say you hate people
you're supposed to say you hate folks

4:25 PM
Them too

That's a pretty weird edit. Namely using a non breaking space to separate SQL from Server, and linking to the Wikipedia article on the task manager, like the audience for this Q&A wouldn't know what that is.
People spend their time on strange things.
Strange to me, anyway.
Of course, I spend my free time learning and playing 90s rock music on the piano. So.

@JoshDarnell it's normal for that user
Maybe they're heavily into SEO
Above our pay grade

@PaulWhite Scary thought.
Definitely above my pay grade.
I hesitate to say how far out of Erik's reach it is.
All the comments about cutting power, disabling NICs, blue screening PCs, and I’m just over here trying to answer the question asked (killing processes from the task manager).

Doing the Lord's work
Despite overwhelming odds
On ya Josh
Stupid comments are inevitable from HNQ I'm afraid. I'll delete the valueless ones once the HNQ frenzy ends. Meantime, enjoy the points I guess
Great tab management btw

7:20 PM
@PaulWhite LOL thanks.

@PaulWhite also: creeper!

You're not the only one with multiple tabs open

I thought you only had one-tab license.

Snitch
Now I have to deal with the tab licence police
Thanks a bunch
Typical behaviour for someone who obfuscates connection strings I guess

7:36 PM
I'm not sure that was totally necessary. Habit I guess haha.
The only thing of minor concern in there was a server name from work. Because I wanted to do the test across a remote connection to avoid named pipes.

It's completely fine
Hey @HannahVernon there's an exciting new version of sqlpackage.exe included in RC1 as well. How exciting is that

7:55 PM
Paul changed his picture... I don't know what to do with myself.

@SeanGallardy-MostlyRetired well you could consult the recent transcript for the reasons and additional professional photography from years gone by I even made a bookmark chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/179/conversation/old-photos
