God. I mentioned a couple weeks ago that someone had an EAV table approved to go to production
I had a look, and so far there's one entity and two attributes in there. Joy of joys

I thought answers would be "make EAV table(s)" but the answer by blasteralfred is just awesome:

Q: How to design database to store attributes of attributes into database

Happy SinghI am designing database for jewellery website in which a lot of products will store. While designing tables for attributes of products i stuck. My problem is how store product attributes and there sub attributes and so on in database. Up to now i have created 3 tables for product and attributes ...

@ypercube you can extend this approach with blobs so that you only need one table and one column - and I am working on a research paper which I believe will finally prove that I can simplify this even more: by reducing the number of rows to one as well! Finally you can be free from the constraints that databases impose on you and migration to other platforms will be easy too.
nice. And since BigTable is trademarked (I assume), you can call it BigOne (one table, one column, one row)
"One for all and all for one" would be a great hit in the ads
And there will never be a problem to use SELECT * FROM ... as a scalar expression.

Why do people get in the habit of prefacing comments with "upvote my answer if you found it helpful first." Like they need the upvote before they will talk to you about their answer?
He seems to be from India. Big country, a lot of competition, and SO may seem to him an opportunity to show his worth, and how otherwise if not by gaining lots of rep points.
I think the badgering sends a wrong message regardless of motivation.
He also complains to a lot of people to "improve your accept rate first"
(I've flagged and had several of those removed already.)
Generally he's a good member - 178 questions (!) and most seem to be up-voted and most seem to be accepted.
But I feel like he should be persuaded that a good answer should stand on its own without the "up-vote and accept" demands.
I spurred some good conversation about how to deal with these comments:

Q: How should we treat "don't forget to accept my answer" comments?

Aaron BertrandNew users already have a reminder to accept an answer on their question. So I don't see the need in general for this post-answer badgering, even if it is intended to be genuine constructive help (which it almost always isn't). To me it seems like little more than rep greed, especially on a site l...

But it's even worse in the case that I didn't bring up at the time - where the user makes it seem like having a conversation is conditional on getting an up-vote first. That is pretty rude IMHO.

@AaronBertrand Yes, that really stands out. I can only hope that something was lost in translation and what he really meant by "upvote my answer first" wasn't intended to sound that rude.
15:10
@AndriyM We've found that with a fair number of our indian users on photo
they don't realize that they're being rude

@ypercube Would one of the HPs set up in a DMZ with Linux and the express version of DB/2 (and whatever other platforms take your fancy) be of use to anyone?
(or too firewall-unfriendly with ssh only access?)
Maybe one could access it through gotossh.com or a similar service.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Thnx, I had forgotten about the Express edition. I could set it up in a machine.
I wanted to test how IBM has implemented (updatable) views. (see this question: stackoverflow.com/questions/11870810/…)

2 hours with the SQL-manual and I haven't decided yet, if my answer is correct.

How DARE they put the site into maintenance mode for an hour on a Saturday. Heathens!

Q: Site currently in read-only mode

LukeI receive this banner earlier today on August 11, 2012, starting at about 16:15 UTC on all sites. (the picture is from ELU) It read This site is currently in read only mode, we'll return with full functionality soon. What was this about? Was it scheduled in advance (I din't see anything)? Is ...

I'm so upset that they didn't tell me about it in advance. That was the only hour I scheduled all week to answer questions, and they took it from me!
> The main advantage is that we are now using the AlwaysOn availability feature of SQL 2012.
that strikes me as a little ironic :-)

Well if you want to put a bullet-proof windshield on your car, you need to take it into the shop first :-)
