weird, looks like 2019 lost the ability to get procid for vanilla scalar UDFs that was present in 2019 🤔
2016 fiddle - https://dbfiddle.uk/?rdbms=sqlserver_2016&fiddle=3025185b1cb94f3560b6d47df6e945dc
2019 fiddle - https://dbfiddle.uk/?rdbms=sqlserver_2019&fiddle=3025185b1cb94f3560b6d47df6e945dc
or rather...
procid resolves everywhere (2016, 2019)
just the util name funcs are borked (2016, 2019)

11:44 AM
Might have something to do with scalar UDF inlining introduced in 2019

possibly 🤷‍♂️ - you remember offhand which dmv shows is_inlineable or whatever that attribute is called?
sql_modules
fwiw - looks like an inlineable scalar borks it dbfiddle.uk/…
so yea, i'm guess some weird "copy module" is happening behind the scenes for all inlineables where @@procid isn't the object_id of the defining module
🤷‍♂️if only there were a question posted somewhere to dump these musings
alas, can't fiddle it for perms, but if you wanna check while i get my VM started - dbfiddle.uk/…

12:09 PM
oh weird, i can't seem to make them not-inlineable?
ALTER DATABASE SCOPED CONFIGURATION SET TSQL_SCALAR_UDF_INLINING = OFF;
go
exec sp_recompile 'foo';
exec sp_recompile 'baz';
go
still showing as inlineable in sql_modules

12:28 PM
@PeterVandivier Maybe the attribute doesn't change once set. Can you try issuing the ALTER DATABASE before creating the UDF?
Looks like I'm not permitted to execute it on dbfiddle.uk

tried setting database offline/online on my local & rebooting the box
no joy
asking a proper question on TA now
oh weird, i wonder if is_lineable is calculated at the instance level rather than the DB level

12:44 PM
@PeterVandivier I would think the function is technically still "inlineable" but won't be actually inlined if you disallow it with the database scoped configuration

@TomV-trytopanswers.xyz That actually makes sense. There's still a question, though, whether changing the inlineability configuration setting affects the behaviour of functions like OBJECT_NAME, OBJECT_SCHEMA_NAME.

i imagine that's the case, but i've kicked the can over to the adult's table

Do you have permissions to perform that operation on the adult's table?

lol
@AndriyM yea, this is what i was trying to get at before the sparkly other behaviour distracted me

12:51 PM
GRANT CAN_KICKING ON AdultsTable TO PeterVandivier;

/giphy adult table

that's one of those high-variance giphy strings
might get you a call from HR if you're unlucky

Those are the best
I shuffled through them in slack and only one of them included nudity

* includity
wish i could @ Aaron in here since my rabbit hole is largely based on his article.
although i suppose if i wanted him to see it, i should've asked on SE rather than TA 🤷‍♂️
also i should really probably try and do some work i'm paid for now

1:01 PM
Well, when nothing else helps...

1:12 PM
@CadeRoux see topanswers.xyz/transcript?room=804&id=24737#c24737 - any chance you can try your build process on a CU2 box?

1:36 PM
also maybe just see it cause it's interesting, may not have anything to do with your specific issue
still though, if you want to ask a proper question either here or on TA, it might be a nice followup

2:00 PM
@PeterVandivier ping him on twitter with the TA question ;)

:p perhaps - it's not a huge thing. just happened to notice he was active in the queues right around when i posted it

1 hour later…
3:04 PM
@PeterVandivier I can but we only support our installations on 2012 and 2016 right now. So my development build starts on 2012.

Q: Azure elastic pool: Can I create as many databases as I want?

mslotI am sitting here trying to figure out what the elastic pool in Auzre gives me. I have a customer that wants a guess on pricing if the move to Azure. They have 3 databases, on a server. The server has 96 GBs of RAM and a 3.4 Ghz processor. That is all i know. The three databases is sharing these ...

Is this on-topic?

3:40 PM
I think so. Do you not?

It's a fine line between pricing for a service and pricing for a license.
IMHO
And potentially very short-lived in usefulness.
As soon as they change their pricing model

@Colin'tHart I suppose so, but that didn't even occur to me so I suppose it's the right side of the line? Nothing but up votes and no close votes is also a positive indicator.

And a useful answer or two
We'll leave it.

Borderline questions are so often rescued by good answers, it's true.

4:03 PM
Well you should have thought about that before doubling the rep then

@Marian I'll be pretty disappointed if they cancel the race due to the virus
