@ypercubeᵀᴹ Can I create noncluster columnstores to a table?
I mean more than one index

12:26 AM
@Dodi82 I think no but not sure.
Try it and see. Or check the documentation

@ypercubeᵀᴹ I made an index on sum of the columns that I believe to be on high querying demand by end users
CREATE NONCLUSTERED COLUMNSTORE INDEX [CL_IX_FactSales_DateKey] ON [dbo].[FactSales] (DateKey, CostValue, CostSales, Margin);

Q: Galera cluster into Google cloud platform

Vincent TeyssierWe have a galera cluster with 3 nodes, on 3 different physical machines but all located in the same datacenter. From what I understood, the reason they deployed this in the past was to increase availability and reliability, DC failures are not a concern. Each node is installed on a VM using 12 c...

Q: Time to take a stand

Joel SpolskyI am extremely upset by President Trump’s executive order on immigration. It is immoral, unconstitutional, and fundamentally un-American. The community on Stack Overflow is made up of users from all over the world. At least 100,000 posts on Stack Overflow were written by users from the seven cou...

Can't tell if this should be voted offtopic or ...
Also, thought some of you would appreciate seeing that

1:58 AM
@jcolebrand I don't see how this is on topic

It isn't

So?
I left my comments on there already as to why I think it's valid, at this point in time
I also flagged it for meta moderators to lock it, because it's gonna get some shitty answers haha

Why is it a question and not a blog post?

I asked that same question
I have no idea. Probably because it's Joel and this is how he thinks sometimes

2:06 AM
@jcolebrand I haven't followed he details of the order. Does it have anything to do with the Internet?
I thought it was only about immigration to USA.

2:22 AM
Valid question
Do you know what stepping stones are?
@Rad if you think this doesn't affect the Stack Overflow community (and really: every international community)...we have a very different view of the world. You cannot have a healthy community if people do not feel welcome. The happenings outside Stack Overflow are impacting the world and us right now in profound(ly negative) ways. This matters. — Nick Craver ♦ 18 secs ago

@jcolebrand yes
and I don't disagree that this matters
Problem is - as I see it - that a lot of many things matter. Who decides what and when SO "stand up" for something?

@ypercubeᵀᴹ The people who work at SO usually ;-)

2:39 AM
@jcolebrand Don't you think this may send some people away?

Do you mean me sharing it in the chatroom?
On a weekend night
When most of our regulars aren't even online?
Or do you mean Joel's posting it on meta?

Not you. Yes Joel's post,, I mean this kind of "stand up", making people feeling that SO is not welcoming to them.

You asked "don't you think this may send some people away?" so I'm going to respond in the way that I think you asked it
IF someone is offended that we as a community don't want to let people into the US with the appropriate approval process, then I don't want them here.
If someone is upset that meta is used to spark calls of outrage and to discuss them as a community, then they don't understand how meta is used
See for example SOPA
This site is a social media site regardless of what people think it may be. We encourage the open sharing of information (social) and it is a primary source for a ton of people, and is viewable just like any other resource of information (media)
Seriously tho, if anyone finds a post about (how treating people who are our brothers and sisters so disgracefully) annoying, they should probably re-evaluate what they do for a living.
Or just not go to meta

@jcolebrand Not the same ting though. If someone else (not Joel, say me) posted a question, for an X political matter, say about CIA's illegal actions all over the world, it would be closed in no time. So, while I agree on the immigration 100%, I may still feel being used. Because my contributions to the sites are being used to spark yes positive calls of outrage and discussions but not all users are free to do the same.

@ypercubeᵀᴹ True
very very true
here's the thing
Joel put up his own money to start the company, so he gets special privileges that we don't...
He also has the respect of many many people in the industry and in the business world in general
We don't get the same courtesy
I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying the post isn't wrong either

Was it closed and reopened?

At least once
I forget the revision url offhand or I would look and tell you
remembered :p

@jcolebrand thnx
Got to get some sleep. Thnx for the talk.
I'm sure the list of comments and answers will be tripled by tomorrow

Sure thing @ypercubeᵀᴹ

I don't think Stack Overflow should go that route personally @jcolebrand @ypercubeᵀᴹ
It's a slippery slope
Do you want to send people away that voted Trump? Putin? Le Pen in the future, where does it stop?
Anyway, thats part of a democracy as well as a community like this, it's OK to disagree and still not be offended

I flagged a comment suggesting that that comment and all the preceding ones be removed as obsolete. Some of our mods processed my flag by removing only the comment flagged, perhaps by mistake. But if not, if you, the mod who took the action, think I was being lazy refusing to flag each of the comments I considered obsolete, you just wait and see!

11:24 AM
@AndriyM Flag all the comments!

7 hours later…
6:52 PM
@PaulWhite what do you think, should we remove the above messages? Maybe send them to trash?
@AndriyM maybe it was me ... were you explicit in the flag about removing more?

@jcolebrand I was, but it might not be the clearest comment in the world.
"obsolete comments at least up to this point"

heh, and it might not have been me that responded, ya know?

However it was, I absolutely had no issues, in all seriousness.

7:08 PM
@jcolebrand I would take no offence in my messages about the political issues (and accordingly this one) moved to trash or removed alltogether
It may be the better solution, there is no point in discussing politics online
@ypercubeᵀᴹ How do you think I became a marshal

@TomV Well done Marshal-8!

@ypercubeᵀᴹ Thanks Marshal-1 :)

7:26 PM
Is @AndriyM going to be the 9th?

If he starts flagging all comments instead of just one...
But he's already the king of edits

@TomV How come?

@AndriyM You have a way of doing minor yet important edits improving readablilty

Oh, edits, not Suggested Edits reviewing...

i'm often impressed by your syntax/spelling edits even though you're not a native English speaker, you often write better than the naive spellers

7:38 PM
@TomV I used to think I didn't care about spelling errors in other people's posts. Time seems to have proven the opposite.
So you can attribute my editing activity to my OCD (largely).

@AndriyM We work a lot with a Belarus subcontractor, attention to detail seems to be a virtue in the region
And I mean that in a positive way

@TomV Thanks, that's how I understood it too, although I don't think East Slavs (or ex-USSR citizen, or whatever equivalent you had in mind) are any more or less careful than people of other ethnicities.
(on average)
What might play a role is those of us who are, for any reason, more exposed to the Western culture might be more mindful of how they are perceived by the West. Or, put slightly another way, it might be about how much they are willing to embrace the Western culture. That certainly shapes their efforts, their diligence.
My vocabulary isn't rich enough, but the dictionary suggests idioms like "put up a good show", "rise to the occasion" – to further illustrate what I mean.

8:39 PM
@jcolebrand I'm not sure Joel Spolsky ever does much actual research before posting his feelings on any particular subject — but hey, maybe I'm taking him literally when I should be taking him seriously.
