Huh, an October answer just was accepted. That took quite some time to test

wow, can't believe ssrs is broken in IE but works in chrome

^^ Not sure how to make the movie work, but that's where I live. Army and tanks in a residential area, sorry for the dutch sentence

Correct

A coworker lives in that street

Scary

9:45 AM
Yes, that's like 4 streets away from where I'm sitting, and there is a fair going on in our city right now

which city

So, "Kortrijk"

how would someone pronounce it
kor tri jk

10:58 AM
@dezso Thanks. Yeah Auckland is expensive and traffic is a problem.
...is back.

@PaulWhite where was he before ?

@PaulWhite Three answers already. He must have missed this community :)

11:24 AM
Seems.

do you have habit of ignoring me ?

Don't know about others but I'm not exactly ignoring anyone, although I may ignore messages that I have nothing to say in reply to, and then it doesn't matter whose messages they are
@Mathematics And I'm sure Tom didn't ignore your question a couple of hours ago.

11:39 AM
It's Paul, I think he put me on ignore

@Mathematics Then you'd be wrong.

12:04 PM
@A_V that applies basically to every language but English (Hungarian more than German, however)

@PaulWhite you didn't tell me where was TomTom then

Right.

12:38 PM
@TomV hopefully everything goes well
@PaulWhite time flies

@Lamak Doesn't it just.

12:51 PM
Oooh, proper Unix binaries on Windows. That I do like

someone gonna tell me who is TomTom ?

1:06 PM
keep ignoring

Watched an episode of Would I Lie to You? with him on YouTube, I think it was shot a couple of years ago, so he was already at least 80 apparently. He certainly looked old but not that old to me.
Thought he was like 65

@Mathematics Dude, I don't know that user either, but if you click the profile link you'll see he posted until early 2014, didn't post any more and now posts again. So I suppose that's what Paul meant when he said "he's back".
My life is so much better know that I know!
@Lamak I suppose the raid is done, Army convoy just passed our offices towards the highway
Bizarre sight

1:21 PM
@TomV at least the picture is not from inside one of those vans

@Lamak The ideas in your head!

I'm being insensitive, I know, I know

@Lamak Nah, the joke was good enough

Can't imagine myself in that situation. The conflict zone in my country is rather far from where I live but we had block posts around the city and further and that already felt so surreal to observe.

krhm

1:35 PM
:28649133 please, don't post your sensitive information so recklessly

did you note it?

@Lamak You know I wasn't actually angry, right?

this is the downside of trying to do something useful while trying to set up another machine

@dezso of course, I memorized it and sent it to every person I know

@Lamak very good

1:37 PM
@AndriyM I'm just messing around, if I thought you were angry I would've said sorry sincerely

now I have to stick your picture somewhere here, so that when you arrive, the coworkers know what to watch for

@Lamak Very well. We are on the same page, that's all I care about :)

and, of course, everyone else (as I don't know who has access to the deleted posts here)
OMG, Joel Spolsky is here tomorrow, so I have to lock my laptops until he leaves

@dezso ah, well, sorry to say, but almost every regular here ;-)
@dezso they'll never see me coming
(because I won't be)

@Lamak it's a pity, we are hiring
(all that was a very sophisticated way to make you asking for unsolicited job offers)

1:41 PM
nice one
@dezso don't use the same password

On a completely unrelated note, my current rep spells "seet" in Leet
Isn't that seet

and Microsoft is down again

2:00 PM
@dezso thnx. I solved th eissue anyway. It was weird, unrelated to pgbench.
Some text editors were adding a BOM thing in the start of my sql files, breaking pgbench as a result.

@dezso Room owners (italic names) and above.
@Mathematics Works for me.
@Mathematics If only chat had some sort of search feature you could use!

2:20 PM
@PaulWhite Ha, you had me verify you weren't talking crap about me before I joined the room :)

Never.

Apparently

@TomV This is where I used to live. There were frequent bomb threats at the time, but always fake as I recall, and from communists instead of jihadists.
I understand some of the people who committed or were arrested for the recent attacks lived nearby in Charleroi

@JamesLupolt Ah yes the good old Cellule Communiste Combattante
Did you actually live in that castle?

2:36 PM
@TomV Yes, the owner split it up to rent it to people who worked on the US Air Force base nearby

Cool

Do you think the area has changed much? I haven't been back since around 89

That area, yes a lot.
But I think the economic decline in the industrial sectors prevalent there was already ongoing when you were there then
It's gotten a lot poorer, but that goes for most of the French speaking part of Belgium

@TomV You mean to say, it wasn't affected by James's departure.

But don't take that last comment as a judgement, when mines and related industry was booming they were the richer part of Belgium and the Flemish population benefited from that boom.

2:59 PM
Charleroi looks pretty rusty on Google Earth. I don't remember it being that way.

3:12 PM
@JamesLupolt Shut down factories without any maintenance whatsoever
Charleroi (French pronunciation: [ʃaʁləʁwa], Walloon: Tchålerwè) is a city and a municipality of Wallonia, located in the province of Hainaut, Belgium. By January 1, 2008, the total population of Charleroi was 201,593. The metropolitan area, including the outer commuter zone, covers an area of 1,462 square kilometres (564 sq mi) with a total population of 522,522 by January 1, 2008, ranking it as the 5th most populous in Belgium after Brussels, Antwerp, Liège and Ghent. The inhabitants are called Carolorégiens or simply Carolos. == Geography == The municipality of Charleroi straddles both banks...
> . Charleroi is in the center of a coal basin. Even so, due to the widespread loss in industrial power in the area since the 1970s, the area has suffered some of the highest unemployment and poverty rates in Europe for most of the 1980s and 1990s. However, from the early 2000s, the overall economy of the area has diversified to include health care, transportation and telecommunications. Nevertheless, the poverty rates are still significant.

@MaxVernon gotchaback
@dazedays he isnt trolling, he's trying to get an actual assessment of what you're actually asking. just because someone is asking questions to clarify what you're asking, and that they may disagree with you, does NOT mean that they're trolling. having said that, I was clearly trolling you so point your crappy attitude toward me. also, max is a nice guy, he asked questions. i just voted to close this. — swasheck 13 secs ago

Off-topic question: I'm lost when it comes to SQL Server licensing (I just build/trim stuff, someone else order the servers and pays the bills) - I'm guessing that a site like sqlfiddle couldn't run on a Developer edition of SQL Server. Any thoughts?

good edit, @ypercubeᵀᴹ
@DanielHutmacher licensing questions are off-topic here ;-)

5:42 PM
@MaxVernon I know, that's why I didn't ask on the site proper. :D

seriously though, you could just ask @jakefeasel

@DanielHutmacher i'd assume not

So MSDBLog.ldf can autogrow by 256 KB to a maximum of 2 terabytes. How many VLFs is that? A lot!

@MaxVernon or I could ask sqlfiddle. :) Express Edition (64-bit)
Figures. :)

@DanielHutmacher lol excellent point!

5:55 PM
@MaxVernon I tried asking him about SQLFiddle weeks ago, still no reply

Haha, yes noticed that earlier, was tempted to flag as NAA but a recent one was declined

@TomV pretty hard to get NAA flags past @PaulWhite

@MaxVernon Can a 10K+ user post the answer in question here. dba.stackexchange.com/questions/133900/…
I cannot verify any more since it's deleted, but I think I would still stand by the flag

@TomV sorry, I don't understand.
what do you want me to do? I don't see anything deleted from that question/answer

6:03 PM
Ah no the answer is still visible
it was just reformatting the OP's query so I still don't see how it's an answer (cc @PaulWhite)

@TomV oooohhhh I see. I agree, that's a pretty terrible answer.
flagged as NAA
and down-voted, as well

I f'ing hate Oracle with the fiery passion of a thousand suns.

One might suggest that naming a table "Movie" is misplaced. Is it a table, or a movie? — Max Vernon 31 secs ago

@TomV Self answer.

@PaulWhite No that's the other one
unless you mean "@flybys answer was perfect" referring to the flagged answer but I don't see how he came to that conclusion
The only thing substantial in the flagged answer was "Question is what you want to achieve, how are the two tables linked? Maybe a LEFT JOIN + USING(RaagID) or something like that is better?" but I believe that's comment material

6:08 PM
@TomV agreed

Not that I care enough about a rejected flag enough to get into a lengthy discussion but I am willing to learn :)

@TomV Oh yes I was going from memory (on mobile). The self answer was flagged NAA by someone else. I declined.
I'll check the other one.
@TomV OK marginal. The "Maybe a LEFT JOIN + USING(RaagID) or something like that is better?" seems like an attempt to answer the vague question plus comments seemed to be going somewhere at the time.
The self-answer appeared to find it helpful.

@MaxVernon Table - and it is a table in the question. I don't see how naming a table "movie" with movie data is misplaced. — Paparazzi 29 secs ago
:) I like your recent trolls @MaxVernon (aka trollmeister)

@TomV So, given the quality of the question, "I would appreaciate if someone could help me optimize this query." ... it seems like a reasonable attempt to answer with the information given. I'm not going to delete someone's answer simply because they could have (incorrectly) left the only useful part as a comment. Make sense?

@PaulWhite Knowing your point of view I see how it makes sense yes

6:18 PM
@TomV It's not just my point of view, it's right there in the FAQ. There are other things that could/should have been done to the question by the community, but they didn't.

To me, at the time, it seemed like a request for clarification along with a reformatted query (while the reformatting could/should have been done in the question)

Does the table contain details about "movie" or "movies"? I find it helpful to use the plural form of the noun since it makes talking about the data more understandable. For instance, Movies can have multiple Characters. We don't say (at least I don't) "Movie can have multiple Character" — Max Vernon 2 mins ago

And I didn't see the self answer at the time, probably because that didn't show up in the review queue and I didn't click through to the question to see all replys

I do realize that this is a holy war, and is actually unwinnable. But sometimes it's fun to try.

@TomV Much of it is, which is why I said it was borderline. The point is that the post contains an valid attempt to answer, even if you strip all the other stuff away. NAA means actually not an answer. No sort of answer at all. None. Not a bit. Zero.

6:24 PM
@PaulWhite I've lowered my threshold over time but I'll need to lower it further then :)

@TomV It's not a great example, because it's so marginal, but for mine a downvote/comment as you feel inclined would have been the correct action. There's nothing for a mod to do. Deleting would be harsh and orphan the self-answer. Converting to a comment would be wrong too.

@PaulWhite perhaps a well-made edit by a non-moderator would rectify the situation nicely?
or are you of the opinion nothing needs to be done?

But even a downvote might be harsh: the guy was clearly looking to help as much as possible, and contributed the root of the right answer. I'm pretty sure we shouldn't punish answerers for the quality of the question.

@MaxVernon You mean remove the reformatting after I did it in the question itself? I thought about that but didn't as it would remove 3/4 of the answer
Anyway, the thread isn't worthy of much effort I believe

@TomV Agreed.

6:28 PM
So, sorry to raise it, it started as a joking "yes I would flag but a recent one got rejected" in reply to max's link

@MaxVernon An edit to the question or answer by "flyby"? Any edit that improves a post is always welcome of course.

@TomV I was thinking removing the regurgitated SELECT statement from the answer, and reformatting the sentence to be simply: Maybe a LEFT JOIN + USING(RaagID) or something like that is better? Could help to know what Shabad and Raag mean in english.

@TomV No it's good that we discuss these things. I can be persuaded I was wrong on occasion.

@PaulWhite I was just thinking about the answer
@PaulWhite She's a witch! Drown 'er!

@MaxVernon Ok, but what would you change? Anything useful from the comments could go there I guess. Difficult from my mobile to be sure, too hard to keep switching screens.

6:30 PM
@MaxVernon That's what I was thinking of, It's somewhat confusing since it looks like the query is part of the answer

let me give it a try. we can easily roll back if necessary

@MaxVernon Fine you like to use plurals for table names. I don't and stated so in the first line. The stated question is not about table naming conventions. — Paparazzi 10 mins ago

@TomV excellent

On another note, nothing says "I'm a SSAS noob" like referring to dimension members as "records"

@TomV you mean dimension "attributes"?

@TomV I prefer to call 'em forty-fives.

@Lamak No members, members are rows, attributes are fields

@TomV now I'm confused

6:52 PM
@MaxVernon I removed the obsolete comments on Blam/Frisbee/Paparazzi's answer as well. Flagged 'em myself :)

@PaulWhite just noticed that. thanks

@Lamak See this edit

@PaulWhite ah. carry on, then

that question about a+b+c+d=0 really helped.
@PaulWhite 200 points in a day

> The square academic cap, graduate cap, cap, mortarboard (because of its similarity in appearance to the hawk used by bricklayers to hold mortar) or Oxford cap, is an item of academic dress consisting of a horizontal square board fixed upon a skull-cap, with a tassel attached to the centre.

@MaxVernon Beggar :)

@TomV I'm not above anything, I tell ya!

@TomV aha, I see

@MaxVernon Oh I thought that was Epic or Legendary.

@PaulWhite Mortarboard is the bronze version of both of those.
I'm 14% of the way to Epic.

which I think means I'm not very epic.

@PaulWhite yes, the esteemed Aaron.

@MaxVernon I did, felt like I needed to compensate yesterday's downvote for lack of effort with an upvote for lack of effort

@Lamak Ooops!

7:07 PM
@PaulWhite ... how would you go about indexing a column that's > 900 bytes? i found a HASHBYTES() solution but i'm not sure i love it

@PaulWhite hate to say it but apparently you were right

@Lamak because none of us could be 0..n

@Lamak I prefer the singular none of us is.

@PaulWhite yup, I think I understood that

7:09 PM
@Lamak I edited out my original mistake.

@PaulWhite are you from texas?

@PaulWhite I did too, that's why I search for it

7:10 PM
@swasheck Could be improved by explaining it at length.

DO THEY SPEAK ENGLISH IN WHAT???
@PaulWhite probably. but i'm more interesting in indexing large columns

As you were then.

right. so do you have any other tricks other than a HASHBYTES on hashable types?

@swasheck If you were in Microsoft's AX dev team you would throw 3 of those columns in the clustered index

Fun fact, I talked to their program manager and asked the question "So it's not really working yet", he replied "Oh yes the product is working, the tools not so much"
duh

interesting distinction

@TomV maybe the tools are the devs?

they are here, that's for sure
ooh. found my next book to read

The printing isn't an issue at all, since the thing runs on azure, it stores pdf's of printed doc's on an azure blob storage and you need to install an agent on a local LAN machine. The agent isn't a real service but an application. I tried to configure it but chose the wrong tenant url (yes you need to type it out by hand) and when reconfiguring it it kept saying "access denied". I asked one of the dudes "ah yes we know, once you failed authentication you need to restart the application"
the product is working! (barely)

8:04 PM
@TomV lack of CUPS drivers?

They keep referring to the one project they got live, Lotus F1 team, that surely compares to a 1000 user ERP system
@Lamak I think the tools are the managers

This revision to an answer was suggested by the OP, and a reviewer approved it single-handedly (because he used Improve Edit), but I'd say it should have been rejected as too radical (or "conflicting blah blah").
Of course, if the answerer doesn't mind, fine...
@MaxVernon Did you omit the +2 for accepting an answer and the bonuses on purpose or because you forgot about them?

9:33 PM
@AndriyM because I'm a dummy and forgot.
also, I don't know where to find the actual bonus rep awarded.
@AndriyM seems to me like that edit should have been made to the question, not the answer.

@MaxVernon Or it should have been a self-answer. But not an edit to someone's answer definitely

Did my best:
To me the edit by OP doesn't seem to belong in this answer, but if you don't mind, so be it. If you do, though, feel free to roll it back. — Andriy M 3 mins ago

@PaulWhite lol the "fun" is just about to start here.
Like did you hear the one about where OPENXML goes faster than XML datatype?

@wBob Woo hoo (not)

lol me neither. I mean some people say, but I've hardly ever seen it.

That was a great read, Paul. Thanks again.

@wBob It does sometimes, doesn't it? Been a long time since I consciously used xml
