@mmarie Installing Oracle is harder work than installing SQL Server (including client installs). I think that is 'by design' :) Which Oracle client are you using and can you connect to the target Oracle database using SQL*Plus?

Interesting Oracle question:

Q: Why does dropping a MVIEW trigger a full refresh?

a_horse_with_no_nameI just created a materialized view in Oracle but realized I used the wrong script, so I wanted to drop the MVIEW again. The MVIEW was created with a statement like this: create materialized view foobar refresh start with trunc(sysdate) + 1/8 next sysdate + interval '8' hour as select ... fr...

BUT TERADATA ROXORS MY SOXORS
A clever alternative to the CTEs - I'll keep that in mind. Unfortunately, Teradata supports neither stacked CTEs (I believe it might support one, so that's on my list to investigate) nor the APPLY operator. — Cade Roux Mar 17 '10 at 2:43
@CadeRoux ha, I see you received the ping :-). Great seeing you back.
14:59
@Marian Thanks for missing me!
@CadeRoux well you're the only one I know with a Google Glass.. so yeah, I was wondering where you're at now :).
@CadeRoux i just caught up with you on G+
It's been a long couple years. Separation, divorce, Ingress. Mostly unrelated. But spend a lot of time on Ingress when I'm not at work.
Finally hit level 9 last night
Woot!
Level 14
And closing in on 15/16
But really what is taking my time is leadership duties.
We were a connected cell for Kansas City Interitus AND San Diego Helios
And iOS release AND new agent nights AND new web site AND on and on...
15:06
I'm a lone wolf player
Sounds like fun though
Noooooooooooooooooooo!
You can't do that!
i'm on iOS so i dont play at all
No, it's not fun? Pity
@swasheck iOS version now
It is a lot of fun, actually. Watching the sun come up here two days in a row
@CadeRoux nice view from the balcony
A bit too raw for my taste, but it's very nice.
I'd probably need to disconnect from my PCs and get outside for a bit during my next vacation :/
15:19
@Marian raw?
@swasheck only nature in the pic, no signs of civilization (buildings, cars, streets..etc).
wimp
@Marian There is only camps out there
buildings on stilts 20-30 feet in the air
fishing boats
@swasheck yeah, I should reconnect with mother nature.
You just drive to the end where the road runs out
15:22
@CadeRoux was joking with the balcony.
There are decks on most of those camps.
That's a memorial to Katrina victims of St. Bernard Parish.
I was there at 6am and 7am on successive days for some important operations to maintain control of our cell. Which reminds me that I really need to compile the album and video for that morning...
not familiar with Ingress, so can't appreciate what you're saying there. But sounds important :).
but I can say you have a great looking car
Ingress was fun for a couple of months, but I lost my interest in it.
I do not
The thing with Ingress for me, at least, is the team building and social aspect. But it has a lot of facets to the game.
@Lamak ok, figured I'd ask :)
@CadeRoux Team building and social make or break any MMO. We've got an active group around here, I just don't usually have the time to meet with them.
@bluefeet wait, wait....I'm just now understanding the question
it does export to xlsx
or am I confused?
mmm....apparently I'm confused
16:11
@MikeFal Yeah. The thing we do is have a constant conversation in Hangouts and the G+ and try to meet up whenever. You can never get all the people all the time, so building around a core group of players and having constant activity keeps the local faction going. It's nice to be able to meet up and have dinner and drinks and not even play the game.
And the road trips are fun. I've been to anomalies in Mobile, Birmingham, and Jacksonville. I'm going to Galveston next weekend. Also, I play on the bike, so it's great for fitness.
I've thought about getting a phone mount for the bike just for this reason
RAM Mounts.
The upper is a Zerolemon belt holster with clip removed bolted to the RAM mount. The lower one is the X-Grip
#throughglass obviously
Way fancier than the duct tape I envisioned
I have crashed with the upper one and it came out.
I hit a poorly painted speedbump at the battlefield at fullspeed in the lower one and it came out, but generally been pretty happy with either. Also RAM mounts in the car for phone and tablet.
Note, crash was not directly caused by Ingressing and cycling at same time, but sand and metal plates in construction area.
16:28
Man, a bike mount for my phone would make me nervous.
5/6 years later, I still have a bald (freckle) patch on my elbow from a crash and the resulting strawberry.
No more Ingress from me here, though - you guys will be spared...

@CadeRoux but mostly he just hates us
Nothing's changed on that front.
I may have just invited everyone on SSC to check out The Heap, so everyone be nice :)
@PaulWhite thanks for the warning.
@PaulWhite who's "everyone?"
18:05
But nobody likes SSC. Every time I visit, there's Steve, staring at me. It's like he's daring me to log in and read his content

Steve's cool.
@billinkc I knew I could rely on you :)
Moden may get a chilly reception if he wanders over here
@PaulWhite They'll need 10 rep to get in, they aware of this?
@billinkc Yes. Several already have accounts. They may not come. I just thought we could be friends.
They all hate SO, which is a start.
@swasheck Regulars on their equivalent to The Heap.

@billinkc no. they're not an ally. they're just a weaker pawn in the struggle
Must have been the vodka lunch
@swasheck That would be disappointing if so. We can disagree without being dicks about it.
@PaulWhite they have one of those? i thought they just had forums
@PaulWhite yeah. i just think he's rude but i am not smart enough to disagree with him
18:09
@swasheck They have a forum thread that has an epic number of replies.
@PaulWhite true. very true.
@swasheck People often come across unintentionally 'rude' on the internet. He's actually very personable, just with unconventional views on some topics.
He and Aaron will likely never be best friends, I accept that.
@billinkc I dare you to log into @SQLServerCentrl

Huh, never heard of your employer but that's way out in KS (for me)
It doesn't say you are the only one, it just says you are one. ;)
Kansas City or K.C. is a city of 464,310 people, making it the largest municipality in the U.S. state of Missouri. It is the central city of the Kansas City metropolitan area, a region spanning the Kansas–Missouri border. Founded in the 1830s as a port on the Missouri River and originally called Kansas, this became confusing upon the establishment of Kansas Territory in 1854, creating the name Kansas City to distinguish the two. Sitting on the western border of Missouri, with downtown near the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers, the modern city encompasses 316 square miles (820 km2) in...

A: SQL Server: Log Shipping in "restoring" state: Can I temporarily take it out of restoring to check it?

SQLRNNR Can I take it to a read only, non-restoring state, temporarily, to check the data, and then put it back to restoring, without breaking the whole restore chain? The key to that question is "breaking the restore chain." If you want to query and verify numbers, then standby mode in logshipping...

> because our devs aren't terrible enough, WE'RE OUTSOURCING FOR MORE HORRIBLE
Ah, Brimhall
@PaulWhite I saw that username and was wondering if that was him. He is active on SSC forums.
@PaulWhite i can't, in good conscience, endorse running
19:18
@swasheck Fair point.
@ShawnMelton Yes, see his profile.
@ShawnMelton @PaulWhite invited them. then @billinkc trolled them. then i trolled them. they're coming. they can't resist the honeypot
@PaulWhite but he got a +1 from me. i played baseball so that i wouldnt have to run a lot
I, what? Trolling is anathema to my core
@billinkc Oh? What do you call it then?
@MikeFal uncrossing his legs
And then I went afk for 20 minutes and the Heap goes nuts!!! I will paraphrase slightly, yes I am the same Sean Lange from SSC. No KFC is not from KC (it is barely even food). Denver is only > KC in the Fall. Anybody who says the only good thing from KC is bbq has sadly missed some awesome music that typically accompanys said bbq.

Q: Conditional data flow task in SSIS

CodeTodyBrief Architecture: I am creating a SSIS package to generate Excel reports. There are different types of reports, So I have created a table to track each user request for report generation and tracking the status of request. A Sql job picks each request and generates the excel file on FTP server...

@swasheck I scout boys now
Wait, that came out wrong
oh dang
are you saying you just came out wrong??
19:35
@billinkc = Mr. Double Entendre
snort you said Entendre
preserved, in case there are edits
My older boy crossed over from cubs to boy scouts 2 years ago
@swasheck As if it wasn't intentional
pshah. as if.
@ShawnMelton Seems like he's asking how to select a data source based on the content of a variable? A reasonable-enough ask?
19:36
My oldest is a Webelos 1 this year. My youngest is starting kindergarten this year. Seems I have a few years left with the cub scouts.
My youngest starts K this year as well so yes, hopefully many years of Scouting ahead of me. Which complements the many years I had as a youth
@PaulWhite Well the variable driving what query and database to execute seems like it be a back and forth type thing if OP doesn't understand it.
@ShawnMelton It might be. It's hard to say until someone attempts an answer?
Speaking of which:

A: Conditional data flow task in SSIS

SQLRNNRYou can create 3-4 different data flow tasks within your control flow (inside the Foreach loop container). Place a sql script before the DF containers. You can have the script actually do something or not. The idea is to create a conditional from this task that leads to the 3-4 data flow tasks...

And:
I choose to get reports about cats so my data flow is going to send down cat attributes (fur color, name, tail length). Jason prefers iguanas so does he gets an entirely different set of attributes in his data flow (eye ball size, weight, tail length)? Or, is the data all mashed into the same buckets which then get fed to reports? — billinkc 27 secs ago
Exactly. I bet they're going to have entirely different data models based on the reports which means an SSIS data flow is a bad choice.
Feeding cats and iguanas to SSIS ought to be illegal.
I will resist pointing out that an SSIS data flow is always a bad choice :)
19:50
I'll probably be too lazy to write it up, but write the reports in SSRS and then use SSIS (script task) to render the reports directly as Excel and then save the bytestream for them
Whoa. That sounds straightforward :-/
i can finally post in chat
To me it is. ?rsRender=XLS and then whatever file save call is
@user2942939 Congrats!
watching your comments about ssis conditional data flow. it would normally be a back and forth but should be fairly straightforward
and yet my userid here is still not updated....hmmm
19:53
It might take a few minutes to flow through the caching etc
makes sense
Ah it's Jason
yes it is ;)
@SQLRNNR Does your answer currently assume the cats and iguana issue is absent?
And what do you think of Bill's SSRS/SSIS idea?
JNK
JNK
it updated
you just need to refresh
19:56
yeah no cats and iguana in it yet. But they can have four distinct data sources with completely separate queries. So cats and iguanas are safe for ssis consumption and disembowlment
yay - I'm me now
not some random number
I think I'm missing something here. What is he asking for that can't be done with a data-driven SSRS subscription?
We can start confusing you with SQLRnR now
@mmarie I do hope you're not asking me ;)
the ssrs subscription would handle it fine. But everybody wants to use a jackhammer now and then
@PaulWhite on the info tab?
Does data driven subscription come standard or is that an EE feature?
19:58
@jcolebrand Clearly I need new glasses :( Happy Birthday.

I'll probably be too lazy to write it up, but write the reports in SSRS and then use SSIS (script task) to render the reports directly as Excel and then save the bytestream for them
