10:00 PM
@MikeFal he came in here once and told me that I couldn't talk about non-dba topics

This place is 50% DBA talk 50% awesome.

50% DBA talk, 110% awesome, really

@MikeFal Hmmm.. your math is fuzzy. Have you been talking to the marketing people again?

@mmarie DO NOT QUESTION ME

@MikeFal how's the Oracle upgrade? :)

10:03 PM
@MikeFal Simmer down, old man. No one is on your lawn ;-)

@Marian Running. The Sr. Oracle DBA here wrote a pretty good doc

@mmarie he just used mysql to do a GROUP BY when doing his calculation. The numbers are correct*

@Phil Wrong! I pulled them out of MongoDB. Eventually they'll be right.

@MikeFal what version are you going from/to?

@Phil 11.2.0.2 -> 11.2.0.4
Minor upgrade, no big deal

10:05 PM
Very sensible. I'd have slapped you if the first number was a 12

Hey man, I'm only doing what I'm told by our Oracle folks.

11.2.0.4 is rock solid. 11.2.0.1 is terribad. There's a user on here (Kupa? Maybe) that keeps on asking questions that are mostly fixed bugs :/

Yeah, we're rolling out 11.2.0.4 to fix a bug. Some parallelism mutex thing
What interested me most about hearing about this is that, apparently, in Oracle you have to tell it to parallelize a query, whereas SQL Server will just do it.

You just have to enable parallelism for the table
You can force it with a hint if needs be

@Phil Ah, ok. Well, still, SQL Server will always attempt to parallelize based on server settings

10:16 PM
That's why I always maxdop 1 all the things

Has anyone tried CBT Nuggets or Pluralsight? Is it any good?

@mission pluralsight has a demo period (I remember a few hours of training).
you should try it.
There are great trainings from Paul Randal and his SQL Skills people.

oh, ok! that's nice :D thanks!

@billinkc I swear to God I will stab you.

@MikeFal As long as those stabs are serialized, I'm ok with this
2

10:23 PM
@billinkc Oh, not only serialized, but in a row based cursor
A nested loop of stabs, if you will

Careful, the police will easily tie that back to you

@billinkc * the police NSA

@billinkc it's mandatory on Sharepoint :-).

This chat room probably already has 2 full time FBI operatives assigned to it. A good splattering of KGB people too

What, no Mossad? I'm insulted

10:28 PM
@Phil who's the other one?

Hides
I bet the regulars in here could do a great deal of damage to the world, given the machines they have access to.

And then there are the BI Devs.

@AaronBertrand did the OP comment on this and then delete the comments? dba.stackexchange.com/questions/59150/… I swear I got notifications for it a few hours ago
