I didn't know it was a she, other than that I hope she does well in the election. I see bohemian is giving her a tough time. Sorry it not heap related

12:30 AM
And I think there are 3 spots, it doesn't matter if it's the 1st or 2nd or 3rd place.
@Vader It is related :)

Q: Secure database design for web-based medical data application

user34479Background: I am in the process of creating a database which contains medical information (patient-specific, likely identifiable). The treating doctors shall have access to the database via a user-friendly web frontend. I am currently thinking of Perl + the Dancer framework for the front-end part...

Do all PHP modules read like a D&D adventure kit?

2:10 AM
I don't know why there's a reject button in the review process

2:23 AM
@AaronBertrand Really, I just love you.
Physically.
@Lamak There are lots of mods here already. And y'all have Jack "The Beast" Douglas. I don't really see you needing more mods for a little while yet.
But hey, if the current crop are ever feeling inadequate, they need only ask.

2:37 AM
@FreshPrinceOfSO Your answer only half sucks. Kudos.
(if that's not what you were pinging me about, sorry)

@Shog9 does my answer 1/4 suck?

2:59 AM
@bluefeet You wrote "edit" in the first paragraph. Twice! Granted, one of those was a noun, but still...
I stopped reading there and up-voted.
Even though up-votes on those answers are utterly pointless.
For reference: if someone hands me a link to someone's post that they want deleted and suggests I fix it somehow, I decline the flag and laugh. If you post proprietary data on SO and don't know how to edit it out, you're screwed anyway. So the folks thinking "hand it to SE" is a valid answer to that question are delusional.

@Shog9 edit, edit, edit... Well that's good to know that SE has that point of view about proprietary data

@Shog9 nah I don't remember any more. Probably wanted to bother you to delete something somewhere.
@Vader that bohemian character had an interesting question on meta. And by Interesting I mean they should rethink their nomination for moderator.

@bluefeet I'll happily go out of my way to help someone who honestly wants their private data off the 'net. But using it as an excuse to destroy other peoples' work is beyond the pale and I treat it as such.
And sadly, it's usually the latter.

@Shog9 (in hard accent) in my country half is great thing

Half a beer is better than no beer at all.

We're mostly vodka drinkers.

Y'all are boring

Well @AaronBertrand is usually the life of the party

FWIW, @swa - I took the time to enjoy Stranahan's recently - worth it.
Muuuuch better than Breck.
A Colorado Bourbon worthy of the name.

Don't know how you can drink that stuff
I'll bother you tomorrow.

@Shog9 People just don't use their brains when they post stuff online and it can bite them in the butt.

3:23 AM
@FreshPrinceOfSO it's just like vodka, only with flavor.
@bluefeet yes, this is true of most everything in life. Either you're willing to take responsibility and help clean up the mess, or...

What do you think of my Microsoft Connect submission to request EXCEPT ALL and INTERSECT ALL to work in SQL Server?

3 hours later…
9:01 AM
@ErikE EXCEPT ALL would seem handy, INTERSECT ALL probably less so. For instance, if set A has 3 (X,Y) rows and set B has 2, the INTERSECT ALL result would contain 2 but I can't yet see how that would be more useful than 1, since I can't distinguish the two instances anyway.
Presently it would make more sense to me to ROW_NUMBER duplicates in both sets then either EXCEPT ALL or INTERSECT ALL them to have meaningful results.
EXCEPT ALL can be useful to determine if one set has more duplicates than the other, too.

@Marian The mods (Aaron or JNK, can't remember) have advised on not to edit spam content. it's easier that way for others to recognize it's spam. And when it's deleted, it's not visible anyway, except to 10k users: dba.stackexchange.com/questions/50594/…

@ypercube what question?

@bluefeet How to write a union without UNION: Alternative to UNION clause in Mysql

12:45 PM
@ypercube +1 from me - hopefully that will lessen your shame

or increase it :)

@bluefeet you have my love

@FreshPrinceOfSO thanks, that warms me :)

@Lamak :)
I guess I meant non-practical problem.

@FreshPrinceOfSO I'm curious if the Bohemian is going to answer the mod questionnaire (meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/221594/…) nothing yet

I love puzzles - and that's probably why I answered - but they don't really fit at SO.

@bluefeet doesn't seem like he needs to. after that stunt he pulled on meta, he's not fit for mod IMO

@ypercube do you take part in the code golf site?

@bluefeet No.
I had an answer some weeks ago but then the question was locked

2:30 PM
@FreshPrinceOfSO someone commented on his meta question today that this popularity is probably due to the regex answers

and I couldn't add it - as my rep is low.

@ypercube I ran into that same problem. I haven't been able to find a question to answer to gain any rep

@FreshPrinceOfSO What stunt?

@bluefeet didn't the meta question got deleted?
@ypercube he asked a meta question trying to identify a user that was downvoting him.....like 4 downvotes

@Lamak he asked another one

@AaronBertrand ^^ yes I did that for a very long time
you actually were the first person I corrected

When you say my name it could be either (well depending on where you're from), but it always amazes me when Starbucks etc. write "Erin" on my cup. I mean, did you see me standing in front of you when I ordered my coffee?

A: Does the SO community view itself as gender neutral?

FreshPrinceOfSODefinitely not. The community's sexism is inherited from the rest of society. The best analogy I have for this is the following: A young boy and his father are in a car accident. The father dies at the scene. The boy is transported to the hospital, taken immediately into surgery... but the s...

argh, this comment still gets on my nerves
So, basically it's laziness. Let the bulk of the filtering work be done by people who care a bit to make the final choice simpler, then when the votes really count let the community at large piggy back off the work already done. People are people I guess :/ — Bohemian 4 hours ago
so, if you don't understand the reason for the primary phase of the election, then it's laziness?

@Lamak Your comment there could be an answer.

@Bohemian Please answer the questionaire or withdraw your nomination. I've really been taken back by your recent meta question and comments. I really wish these could be visible under your nomination. — FreshPrinceOfSO 10 secs ago

@ypercube I added it as a comment there because it was a reply to his comment, not directly focused on the question. But you are right, I could've added it as an answer instead....for some reason I try not to post answers on meta though

3:45 PM
I really wish down-votes cost more rep. It's silly that +8/-8 = +24 rep. Like the other one, he'll leave that there until it starts getting him negative rep.

aaaand, now that I read my comment again I realize that I'm a broken english user.....why did I write "this whole process is incredibly value" instead of "this whole process is incredibly valuable"?, sigh

@AaronBertrand it's way worse than that on answers too

@Lamak because you're human?

@Lamak I do this too and I'm fairly native

@AaronBertrand well....yeah, but when I see those kinds of mistakes from my writing I still want to kick myself

3:47 PM
@Lamak that's better than what i'd type in any other language (except maybe german ... which is my best second language but you're better at english than i am at german)

Meh, I try not to get too hung up on grammar / spelling etc. Did people get your point? That's what's important.

hopefully they did

Little things do bug me (like "there's things" or "their" vs. "there" etc), but they happen

the meta spam is crazy today

3:49 PM
@swasheck Well, my second language would be chilean sign language, so that would make english the 3rd one?

I haven't read meta in a while, it made me nuts

@swasheck and your writing is great
@AaronBertrand yup, they bug me too
@FreshPrinceOfSO lol. I can't even see the post, but the title made me laugh

@Lamak you'd be surprised at how many first-language english speakers would have said, "and you're writing is great"

@swasheck yup, I've seen it a lot actually.

Is anyone available to answer a general MySQL question?

@user2708395 feel free to ask, but that's not generally what we do here, and most of us only know how to spell MySQL.

it depends™

4:16 PM
@AaronBertrand lol :) ok

@mmarie So, how is google fiber going?

FiOS pretty good for me, this is pretty consistent

So I was about to execute a SELECT ... INTO OUTFILE to generate a CSV, but the lead programmer won't let me run that and wants me to pipe the results to Java and have Java generate the CSV. He won't give me a reason, so I was wondering if there is some kind of performance issue with running SELECT ... INTO OUTFILE or some other reason that might justify this..

@Lamak It's not hooked up yet. They (independent contractors) just came to do the wiring yesterday throughout my complex (I live in a rowhouse). They apparently didn't finish so they are coming back today. I think Google will actually come by next week to officially hook me up.
I didn't know all of this yesterday because my landlord is horrible at communicating

4:19 PM
@user2708395 sounds like a good question for the main site

@swasheck ok thanks!

@AaronBertrand jeezus....I envy you

@user2708395 I'd try to press this guy for a reason though, don't assume it's performance.

@mmarie aw, that sucks

@mmarie sucks living under the auspices of the earl of grantham

4:20 PM
@AaronBertrand I have a really bad lead programmer, he doesn't communicate with any of us and just tells us not to do stuff, but I want to improve as a developer.

@user2708395 again, i'd ask why the lead programmer says no. then you can target a question for a specific response to the lead's specific issue.

@user2708395 You should ask for an explanation. You need to know for your own knowledge development

Well asking "what are the pros and cons of x" or "why is x better than y" are unlikely to be highly welcomed.

@AaronBertrand any issues with streaming netflix? ;)

@AaronBertrand your upload speeds are much better than mine ... this is the result from home

4:23 PM
Fair enough. Thanks guys!

@swasheck I've watched a grand total of two episodes of Breaking Bad since resuming my service in January (I was off of Netflix for several years, pre-dating streaming in fact). And I think my usage pre-dated the recent hubbub about it. Didn't notice any problems, but that series is not hi-def, so doubt I would anyway.

@AaronBertrand ah. we're in a comcast zone so we're stuck with either comcast or centurylink

@FreshPrinceOfSO Verizon keeps begging me to pay $10 more a month for 50mb down. Wife's work pays, so I don't care, and would, but I just don't think I would notice a difference between 42 and ~50. I'm not downloading a whole lot of stuff, ever.

@AaronBertrand I download movies heavily. I notice the difference.
In your case, it makes no sense to upgrade

@FreshPrinceOfSO Ain't nobody here got time for movies. Seriously.

@AaronBertrand that'll probably change for me too come May

@MichaelJSwart get out

We'll go to the Lux once in a while, it's a premium theater with seat service, and catch a current flick. The movies I tend to watch at home are either the occasional on-demand (which Nicole's work also pays for) or whatever's on that I can sort of half-watch while doing other things.

Hooray for work

@FreshPrinceOfSO

@swasheck
just started tuning a query with 7 nested subqueries.

@FreshPrinceOfSO just burn it.

@AaronBertrand the inner 3 use window functions

People make things way more complicated than they usually need to be. I'd say start over only looking at the results of that query.

@AaronBertrand can't get the results. query takes 275.9 minutes to complete

6:45 PM
@FreshPrinceOfSO well, you can....

@FreshPrinceOfSO ok, do you have an idea what results the query is supposed to return? Or has nobody ever waited for the query to finish? Surely the person who wrote the query knows what it was supposed to return...

@AaronBertrand i just want a cupcake

Ok. I can't help with that one.
I mean, I could point you to cupcake recipes, but that would probably take you at least 275.9 minutes - unless you have all the ingredients handy and your oven is pre-heated.

I'll need to go back to the individual who wrote it
And cupcake their face

Would you like to borrow my ruler?

Thinking of printing out the query on giant poster paper, crumpling it up and throwing it their face

I have the SQL Server Service Manager running everytime I startup Windows XP, the reason I want to fix BDE Administrator is because I have a Business Software th — Doomineer 23 mins ago
th... that question reads like such a trainwreck. I'm torn between knowing more about it vs backing away softly

@FreshPrinceOfSO This doesn't sound so much like tuning as "demolishing and rebuilding"

I wish I could show you guys this query. Any tools to anonymize a query (it's not a SQL Server query)

@FreshPrinceOfSO what is "secret"? Table names? Find/replace

@FreshPrinceOfSO unless it's very very explictly named then just put it up on a private gist
The only reason I wouldn't want to be super explicit with the product at my job is because we're financial and could be compromised for funds transfers to external accounts.
But you would have to know a lot about the app in the first place to do that, and we're pretty security conscious
