12:00 AM
And the primary voting: Mod elections - vote here
5

12:28 AM
@ypercube would you like me to change that wording? :)

@bluefeet No, I was just kidding. Didn't want to comment in there, as I guess it may be misinterpreted.
You are doing quite well with the votes so far, I see.
The Prince, not so good.

@ypercube I'm actually surprised by Bohemian.
I guess people like wombats

12:45 AM
wait, you have drinkies in here?
first time in here - was referred by bluefeet's mod q&a post
I'm a DB programmer, so I write applications that are heavy DB use, and design the DB for best organization, usage, optimization of data, those sorts of things. MySQL and MS SQL both in pretty equal parts - 15 years professional experience.
I can't really speak very well to DBA sort of things, like where and how to store files, performance options, DB internals, things like that are not my expertise. I can speak very well to query optimizations, table and index design, things from more of a programming and application design perspective.

1:08 AM
Hi @ErickRobertson

Welcome @Erick

1:46 AM
@ErickRobertson That's our coping strategy, yeah

8 hours later…
9:57 AM
@billinkc OVER(ORDER BY ... RANGE BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND UNBOUNDED FOLLOWING ) can be written more shortly as OVER (): sqlfiddle.com/#!6/d41d8/14980 (might come in handy in the future)

@AndriyM You are right but I think the default is not always RANGE BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND UNBOUNDED FOLLOWING, depends on the window function.
And Aaron has blogged about ROWS BETWEEN ... being more efficient (in general) than RANGE BETWEEN ... in SQL-Server.

@ypercube Yes, I also remember reading on ROWS being better than RANGE when calculating running totals. But in this case there already was RANGE, not ROWS, and using the default range specification instead would seem to me unlikely to be a performance hit.
Besides, we are also removing ORDER BY.

@AndriyM Yes, that matters.

I must admit, though, that I was suggesting OVER () merely as equivalent in terms of results returned but not necessarily equivalent in terms of performance, although it did occur to me that avoiding ORDER BY might be beneficial too.

10:13 AM
It's very tricky, that when there is an ORDER BY, the default window is not all rows.

Would definitely seem tricky for me as a maintainer of such functionality, but, strangely enough, it seems only logical to me as a user.

12:12 PM
anyone see anything I'm missing in this?

A: Unpivot from existing query

bluefeetThis process to convert columns into rows is actually called an UNPIVOT. You can do this a few different ways. UNPIVOT: function: ;with cte as ( select'Amount' as Amount, ('£'+ CAST(SUM(rc.[Fee Charge] +rc.[Fee Charge VAT] +rc.ExtraCharges+rc.ExtraChargesVAT+rc.OtherCharges+rc.OtherCharg...

Do we have any Extended Events gurus here? blocked_process_report event is giving me complete junk for IndID and ObjectID (neither of them match up to anything in sys.sysindexes or sys.sysobjects)

@bluefeet there is a missing comma in the values clause in the second query but it could hardly be because of that you received a downvote.

@SimonRigharts @swasheck is the one

12:33 PM
@SimonRigharts have you seen this?
Jonathan is the man that almost wrote the book on XE :)

@MikaelEriksson thanks for checking and the edit. :)

1:00 PM
@bluefeet you're missing heap love

Q: Setting ownership in a transaction SQL

popoyjinThis has been troubling me for days, I have a table with auto-increment, what I want is that the value of the increment value will be inserted in the same row. The problem is that when concurrent users are accessing the query, it will not copy the correct value. Below is my query: Table: Crea...

I need to set up chat alerts for "vtc"

That would be amusing. Everyone opt in to an auto vtc based on chat requests. We truly would get kicked out of the SE network...

Non-native speakers, do the random abbreviations native speakers use hinder your ability to read questions?

not really, as I don't really read questions if they're on SO :-)
(not really, I guess the comments section usually helps to clear things out)

JNK
is anyone in here familiar with perfmon counters?

1:41 PM
@billinkc As a native speaker, the random abbreviations inhibit reading many questions

@Avarkx That's actually what I was thinking. If I'm having to lookup stupid abbreviations, I can only imagine what measures a non-native would have to go through

@JNK familiar at what level? I can read the Quest Perfmon Counters poster, and pretend to use 10% of the counters there

JNK
lol
I can't find an exhaustive list
One of my managers is looking for a counter I don't believe exists, which is DROPPED connections
I don't think SQL Server logs the method/reason for disconnect

@JNK I think you get resets, but dropped is a subset. I'm not ultra familiar with perfmon myself though

JNK
yeah I can't find a list anywhere besides the quest poster

2:03 PM
For reference: DBA.SE drinkies now confirmed for 7:30 on Thursday 20 Feb. @MarkStorey-Smith, @JamesLupolt, @MartinSmith, @JackDouglas, @ypercube, @MartinC, @Phil. New venue, pigs-ears.co.uk located in Richmond next door to the old Wagamama venue. It's a gastropub type outfit with many ales on tap.

Q: Method or Counter to track dropped connections in SQL Server?

JNKOur production server is running SQL Server 2008 (non r2). 3:07 PM
dead
Are they just looking for a type 2 dimension or something else?

3:24 PM
@billinkc Either that or they're being really unclear. Maybe using 3 columns for the scd is throwing them off?

Q: Forward engineer a Workbench model but with my own name for the scheme

VladHow can I forward engineer a Workbench model with my given name of the database scheme? Yes I can edit it in the editor window shown on the image, but what if I have 30 tables to export as SQL code? Yes I can use find/replace tool before executing the exported SQL, but you can forget to use it...

@FreshPrinceOfSO I just learned it was a thing at all

4:02 PM
it's the reverse of reverse-engineering :)

@ypercube seems like a silly tag

@ypercube it sounds like a job on a boat

Well TitanFall is the best thing ever.

@Zane nerd!

Q: Does the Sql Server Agent account need sysadmin permission?

MansfieldI ran Brent Ozar's sp_blitz script, and one of the things it's complaining about is that my SQL Server Agent account has sysadmin permission. I removed the sysadmin permission, but then the agent wouldn't start. (See image below). There's nothing of note in the event log. When I restore the sysad...

@billinkc I figure you know exactly what permissions that account needs due to current client.
Nevermind. Someone answered it. Apparently 7 minutes ago, but it just showed up for me.

Mommy and Daddy are fighting

I want to optimize a query but I won't show it to you: Is there self join optimization in PostgreSQL?

Now kids, when you have 7 different holiday tables across your server, you're not going to have a good time
4/7 were missing President's Day...

@Zane Titanfall only allows 6v6. No thanks.

Maybe those systems don't observe president's day as a formal holiday

@MikeFal It's kind of 6v6
There are NPC's as well.

@billinkc i think they were just drunk

4:42 PM
@Zane Whatevs. Planetside 2 has spoiled me.

The poles love them some vodka

It's brilliant man. Best Multiplayer game I've played since Quake 3

Q: Connecting mysql on server A/ to webapp on server B/

Mel I am connecting mysql on server A/ to a webapp located on server B/. Both servers are Ubuntu servers. For security purposes, is there any way on server B to avoid showing the full path / IP address of server A/ to connect to as this is where the mysql database is? Thanks!

Oh, what to do

@Zane i stopped after Q2

@FreshPrinceOfSO Trespasser!

4:44 PM
Nothing beats WoW. Been playing since release

@Zane i couldn't adjust to the space maps
@Phil wow. (not the game)

@Phil Lots of things beat WoW. I got bored after Burning Crusade.

@Phil Shhh don't say the name. I still get twitches

@FreshPrinceOfSO Jump pads?
@Phil I got out of that post Litch King. Too much time required.

@Zane all that crap confused me

4:46 PM
@FreshPrinceOfSO You would probably not like TitanFall then your character can hop all over the environment. Everyone's either flying around like crazy or piloting giant robots. It's soooo much fun.

I properly raided until a few years ago. Don't take it as seriously now, but still play ~15 hours a week. Probably got at least 1.5 years /played :s

ugh

@Phil I would quit and get back into it constantly.

we're heading down the path of too many indexes

MoP is real good - best expansion for a while. The next expansion is going to be amazing

4:48 PM
@Phil WoW lost me when they took away what made hunters cool, which was our ability to pull. I know why they did it (because most hunters couldn't), but it made the game boring for me.

They still have misdirect

AND SO DOES EVERYONE ELSE
Grrr
Beware, you might get me on my soapbox about a game I stopped playing 2 years ago

They completely changed the class too. They don't have mana or a minimum range and can cast while moving

Doesn't matter. When they gave all tanks the ability to pull, it killed what made the game enjoyable for me. I was a master chain puller.

I was a resto druid. Giving out the HoTs!

4:50 PM
Haha. I've been a resto Druid for 8-9 years

@MikeFal Group tanking was too easy as well.

@Zane Yeah. Honestly, Black Temple was the best raiding experience they ever had in the game. I'm not going to bitch about catering to casuals, but they dumbed down the game way to much.

I remember back in Vanilla Tanking multiple packs as a Warrior was super Challenging.

Black Temple was AMAZING

Yes, yes it was

4:52 PM
Christ, I nearly had a heart attack when we downed some of the bosses for the first time. There was one that was a ridiculous healer test, and that took us months of wiping. The final phase was brutal

@MikeFal In a way yes but they totally beefed up the high end difficulty to compensate. You still had to be good to Tank and Heal the High End stuff. Unless you were a Death Knight.

Reliquary Of Souls

@Phil Oh yes, most of those fights were a thrill because they were so hard. I still remember when we finally got Illidan.

@Phil All of our Midwest guildies got together to Celebrate knocking that bastard down.

Karazhan was ace too. I loved that when I was in a smaller guild
You can solo Kara now. Great fun :)

4:55 PM
Oh yes. I really enjoyed Karazhan. We had a time once where we were "racing" it against another raiding group in our guild. We won because I rocked the chain pulls.

Ragnarok y'all

@Phil Huh, I figured you for a Hordie
@billinkc Ragnaros, you mean.

Lovely, lovely core hounds and I can't skin them because finkle's skinner has never dropped
It was only Rag

IN THE MOUNTAINS. Oh, the memories of that one

4:57 PM
@Phil They don't have that for my old characters...
Scratch that BlackWing Lair was the one we had a party for.

You would have had to have logged in since it was invented

I realized, though, that I need a more "real time" experience for my online gaming. Push button, get loot is old hat.

Hmm Windows forgot how to use Explorer I'll be back.

Archimonde was the other one that took us forever to kill. It'd always be a Mage that'd wipe us, even though they had slow fall

@MikeFal TitanFall...

5:00 PM
@Zane Planetside 2

WoW hard mode raids are actually the hardest raids have ever been. Heroic Garrosh is insane
People still stand in fire :/

@Phil People always stand in the fire.

@MikeFal Ps3 or PC?
I noticed it was SOE.

@Zane PC. I'm not a filthy console gamer.

@MikeFal I have become one. It's just too convenient.

5:09 PM
Last console I owned was a PS1

I gave up sometime after CoD United Offensive.
@FreshPrinceOfSO You should probably still own an NES and at least a Mega-Man game.

@Zane i came to the country post mega-man

@FreshPrinceOfSO They had Mega-Man in Europe.

@Zane They didn't have it in Poland.

@FreshPrinceOfSO Bummer.

5:11 PM
I started on Sonic when I arrived

when did this room become the arcade? :)

when database stuff became boring

@AaronBertrand isn't here finding the worlds worst SQL questions.

Bohemian is pulling away from the pack in the primary

@bluefeet i should probably check that more often

5:15 PM
Says the woman with 4500+ votes.

Heh, tried to log in to my battle.net account but that was determined to be suspicious activity resulting in a lockout. I have to reset my pwd but servers are down for patching.

@Zane yeah he has 1300+ than I do

Now I need to see my character dancing whilst in queue and all will be right with the world

@bluefeet Well their are 3 spots open and you are leading your next opponent by almost 2k

WOW. I have net +87...

5:16 PM
@FreshPrinceOfSO I'm one of those :)

@Zane well this is just the primary - election starts friday

Thanks. I'm impressed with myself

@bluefeet It's still looking good.
You're not in last.
One dude has 7

@Zane they withdrew yesterday

@bluefeet Still finished last.
:)
@FreshPrinceOfSO how many of the comments we post in here are going to be immidietly deleted by @bluefeet?

5:21 PM
@Zane hopefully not a lot, otherwise i would see that as an abuse of power
@bluefeet see this?

@FreshPrinceOfSO yeah I did

Anyone else see what these two clowns are seeing?

@AaronBertrand that alt text for the buttons are not appropriate for the election page

@bluefeet you don't have to run faster than the bear. Just faster than the next slowest meal.

@AaronBertrand Nope.

5:25 PM
@FreshPrinceOfSO right but is that actually the alt text you are seeing?

@AaronBertrand nope

When you go to the page, not based on their screen shot. I suspect they have some SO plug-in / userscript or something.

@AaronBertrand Yeah, you're right

@AaronBertrand yeah I know that.

Nice @bluefeet

@bluefeet but the question still says "This behavior only occurs when hovering over the vote buttons for candidates you haven't currently voted for", and this doesn't happens to me unless I voted and then undo the vote

@JNK they evaluate you?, how?

@Lamak traffic, flag volume, time to resolve flags

6:29 PM
really?, they should survey us then....like, users satisfaction or something
"yeah, we love our mods.....the ones we know"

Hello!

Well, assuming you are satisfied, that would only help to prevent more moderators. :-)

@AaronBertrand I'm fine with that

I think someone prominent (maybe Paul Randal) recently posted something on the web stating that trace flag 3226 (suppress log backups in error log) is very stable and fine to run in production, but for some reason I can't find the post I'm thinking of
Does anyone else remember seeing a blog post about this recently?

@James Do you need some sort of evidence for someone?
I've had that trace flag enabled in my environments for about 2 years now, no problems from it.

6:32 PM
@MikeFal It would be helpful. Personally I know the TF is fine, but I'd like to be able to cite something more authoritative

@James you can show a screenshot of this conversation

@Lamak Excellent idea

@MikeFal Yep, that was what I could find as well. I could have sworn Paul wrote something about it again in 2013/2014, but don't see it anywhere now.
Thanks though

Just telling some folks about this: TF 3226 turns off backup success messages - no more error log flooding
Don't know that you really need any stronger endorsement, like explicitly saying it's stable. These seem to be pretty implicit endorsements that it is.

6:35 PM
@AaronBertrand Yep that's probably good enough for the audience I need to convince. Thanks

@AaronBertrand "Only one expression can be specified in the select list when the subquery is not introduced with EXISTS."

There are people in my house right now installing Google Fiber :-)

@mmarie oh my.

@mmarie i hate you

I bet @billinkc is not happy about this.

@Zane He threatened to come work from my house once Google Fiber gets turned on

^^^ this is a true statement
I have been told my section of the city is going to be eligible for signups next month. No clue what the timeframe is from there to installation but the cable hangers have run the fiber in my area. I whispered precious as I watched them work

8:13 PM
Hopefully you won't have to wait as long as I did. I signed up summer 2012.
but that was before they had the fiber run in my hood

do they come in autonomous google cars to do your install?

@bluefeet man I was preparing a good answer for him before he deleted his question

@AaronBertrand darn it, I would have loved to read your answer

@FreshPrinceOfSO can't, he deleted the question

@AaronBertrand nice

Anyway hope a lot of potential voters got a taste of him before he deleted it

@AaronBertrand I gave a -1
Before he deleted he said something about not caring and just wondering what should he do if/when he's a mood.
mod.

@AaronBertrand I kinda of doubt it, his vote count has exploded today

8:19 PM
I really feel that this election is based on how well you sweet talked in your nomination summary

@Zane back-pedaling. If that was his intent (what should he do when he sees this happening to other users) then he should have not introduced it as a problem he himself was having.
@Zane if he meant what should he do when this happens to him when he's a mod, the answer is the same thing you do when you're not a mod.

If I run again next year, I'll sound extremely pretentious

@FreshPrinceOfSO are you saying I did that?

@bluefeet I doubt that's what he was saying. I think you are getting votes on full merit. Bohemian may be for other reasons.

@bluefeet I think I'm the only one that didn't.

8:22 PM
@bluefeet I'm pretty sure what's pushing you is your astonishing helpful flag count. Not to mention all the mods who said they supported your nod.

I think this is a natural occurrence though, regardless of the cost of down-voting questions. Why? Because there are way more crap questions than crap answers. Even crap answers are usually helpful. — Aaron Bertrand 13 secs ago
@FreshPrinceOfSO Well, that wasn't what I expected you to say.

@AaronBertrand ditto.

The only part of bluefeet's nomination I would consider coming even close to sweet-talking is "I love this community." Of course that statement is quite strongly supported by the amount of time she devotes to flagging.

@AaronBertrand She is, in fact, notable for her unflagging devotion to flags.

@AaronBertrand I know that sounds cheesy but it is really true.

8:26 PM
@AaronBertrand I wonder what % are crap answers that were accepted then downvoted into oblivion and the user who Answered can't delete as it's accepted..

Just feels like I completely missed the format to how long I've been around, performance stats, achievements and bold headers

@FreshPrinceOfSO I didn't do that either. I could have said I have 800+ consecutive days but nope

@bluefeet damn.
If I didn't that where would I find the time to slump into a drunken stupor.

I'm not saying that my nomination summary is better than any one else

@Zane I'm half tempted to edit my nomination and put in some of that stuff

8:29 PM
The voters deserve to know.

Tried to be funny here with a one-liner, then thought I'd better add some supporting info

Aaron BertrandBecause even though it has a question mark, it is an attempt to answer, right? Seriously, if they are making a suggestion, it's an answer, even in the form of a question. If you don't think it's a good answer, down-vote it. If you don't feel strongly enough to give up 1 rep point to do so, move ...

@AaronBertrand very similar to this answer that I gave the other day

A: Why was this flag disputed?

bluefeetI saw this "Not An Answer" flag in the review queue yesterday and I marked it as an "Invalid Flag" which lead to it being disputed. While I agree that the quality of the answer is not the best (since it is phrased as a question) it is still an answer because it directs the OP to a possible solu...

Thanks, updated. There are also at least 10 "why was this not an answer flag declined" in the related section on the right.

@AaronBertrand it is a common question
if you ever go through the 10k flag queue you will see so many things that are incorrectly flagged
people flag wrong answers as Not An answer, um nope

I'll bet. I can barely look at SO anymore in any case.
I comment on a few of the SQL questions when I'm bored or when a specific question gets my attention from meta, or make an edit to an answer of mine when it gets a vote or comment, but otherwise, blecch

@AaronBertrand in case you watch the winter olympics, I guess you saw this:
impressive moment

I didn't see it told that way, but yes, quite impressive. At the same time, not altogether surprising. I might not always seem like a good ambassador, but Canadians really are good sports. :-)

didn't doubt that a moment :)

There are 3 Google Fiber people in my house right now and they all look like hipsters

A: Revisiting free downvotes on questions

Aaron BertrandI don't think "the numbers" can accurately answer this question, because the cost of down-voting a question has not been the only thing to change on this site in the years that has been in existence. The sheer number of users, and hence questions in general, has skyrocketed. The number of low-q...

I won't have anything more than 8Mb for the foreseeable future. Rural area & all. Not worth their while doing FTTC given the population using the exchange.

Q: Need to load huge dataset (32 Million) into table using SSIS

user3277506I have a huge dataset to return in SQL Server( about 32 million rows) This is implemented in view and source code is as follows : select ISNULL(mle.MIdeer, mle.Ider)+ em.MemberId as Idenitifier ,ISNULL( em.EffectiveDate ,( SELECT TOP 1 EffectiveDate FROM c WH...

Given the error they're reporting, that's coming from SSMS and therefore, they're just dumb [tm]. Can I close this as such?

@billinkc ugh, how do people read their own code???

9:27 PM
I was torn between my first edit which was just getting everything into a code block versus running it through a formatter

9:37 PM
Can't he just do a CTAS? Given I've no idea about SSIS :P

lol, prince charming is back
Hugh? Oh my, 321 million is small. This is 2013. I run 9 billion rows on 5 year old hardware. Obviously I do not try to load them all into a SSMS result at once. — TomTom 1 min ago

It should be noted of course that @AaronBertrand 's dog is named "Mr. Peabody". :-) — RBarryYoung 1 min ago

Mr. Peabody is a cartoon dog who appeared in the late 1950s and early 1960s television animated series Rocky and His Friends and The Bullwinkle Show produced by Jay Ward, collectively referred to as Rocky and Bullwinkle. Peabody appeared in the Peabody's Improbable History segments created by Ted Key, and was voiced by Bill Scott, while Sherman was voiced by Walter Tetley. Plot The cartoons are about Peabody, a beagle who is the smartest being in existence. Peabody has accomplished many things in his life as a business magnate, inventor, scientist, Nobel laureate, gourmand, and two-time ...
