MySQL has made some pretty nice changes in the source from Maria.

@TomV I switched to 70VG/30PG a little while back, seems to work fine with non-box.
@sp_BlitzErik That would have been creepy if you'd said it felt different
@JoeObbish I guess. But failing to download it at all seems more efficient.

Q: What is PostGIS doing with ST_DistanceSphere?

Evan CarrollSo I'm looking into this answer, specifically SELECT ST_DistanceSphere( ST_MakePoint(0,0), ST_MakePoint(0,1) ); st_distancesphere ------------------- 111195.07973463 (1 row) Currently that returns 111195.07973463, disturbingly it should return SELECT ((6370986 * 1 * pi()) / 180) AS dista...

Digging through the source is fun for everyone!

@EvanCarroll Hi Evan, please to see you

Morning all
Monday morning, only had one coffee, 2nd conf call of the day. I didn't sign up for this shit. More meetings today then the last month

10:42 AM
@ypercubeᵀᴹ Is FF better now? v57 really does feel a lot quicker, I don't think I've ever noticed a jump in speed like this before — haven't tried 100 tabs open though :p

11:40 AM
@JackDouglas Just updated mine after seeing your comment. The increase in speed is noticeable at the very least.

> It’s fast. Really fast. Firefox Quantum is over twice as fast as Firefox from 6 months ago, ...

@hot2use I usually take that kind of claim with a big pinch of salt, don't you :)

:-) Yes, I know, but they are doing a fantastic job nowadays.

I remember it was praised for its speed at the beginning too. And then later when it became faster after becoming slower (I think more than once).

that sounds right

11:43 AM
They say in the introductory page, "Fast for good." Well, we'll see :)

it's also "lots of extensions broken for good", but now I've discovered uMatrix because NoScript wasn't working, I'm a happy bunny

gbn
So, should I stick with Chrome or go FireFox?
I stuck with Opera for years after Netscape died on me. I wish they'd stop messing with my browsers

Chrome is the safe choice but I'm for FF and DuckDuckGo — the latter being the more difficult choice

I started using Mozilla in my last workplace, then switched to Firefox soon after it appeared on the scene. Never really stopped using it, although at times was using other browsers in parallel (mostly Opera; these days it's Edge, mainly because it's there and it works, but FF still remains the principal browser for me).

gbn
I've no allegiance to Chrome. I do find it CPU heavy at times though

11:58 AM
@gbn Well they might be mining bitcoins in the background

gbn
I did wonder something like that...

@TomV thanks! It was weird to think about it.

12:13 PM
@JackDouglas It's definitely faster but the new greasemonkey version broke the "top bar in chat" script

12:32 PM
Chrome and Tampermonkey

@bluefeet freaking awesome! well done!
now let's talk about a group for the heap :P securityadmin would do..

1:21 PM
@Marian thx!

@bluefeet wowser. bravo!

does anyone use a pw mgr other than 1password?
i'm getting annoyed with them

notepad.exe?

that's already my html editor

@bluefeet Congratulations.
@sp_BlitzErik lastpass
... and Keepass
...and for some personal stuff securesafe

1:31 PM
do you have an article I can use to set postgres admin when using a windows active directory administration, by any chance?

@hot2use so, you use all of them

Yes. Keepass on a thumbdrive with the PortableApps version and a key file.
Lastpass grabs all the basic new logins you create for the various online registrations
SecureSafe will notifiy my next of kin should I die and let them then have all the passwords and documents.

@hot2use Never really given that much thought
I mean what happens to all my accounts when I die

@hot2use how does it know you're dead?

it kills you
on a prearranged date

1:37 PM
Lol

(from their FAQ)

@sp_BlitzErik I use them

gbn
@sp_BlitzErik LastPass at home, Keepass at work. I prefer LastPass.

@bluefeet GO ON

@sp_BlitzErik no issues with them. Maybe it doesn't like you

1:50 PM
do you have a subscription?
my gripe is that i paid for the app up front, they switched models, and now i can't edit anything on my phone

weird. I paid upfront and haven't had problems...yet. Now you've probably doomed me

@TomV Exactly

so have you dropped a production database yet?
dear lord
@sp_BlitzErik if the query is accessing the table only once it is optimal query and you can start indexing your table. — Artashes Khachatryan 1 min ago

@sp_BlitzErik me?
No

Lastpass has the same, but your next of kin require a subscription too.

1:54 PM
@bluefeet yes you, new dba. we all do it.

@sp_BlitzErik thankfully, no. Not yet. Let me be on the job more than a week before I do that

it's best to get it out of the way early
first month

I'd like to keep my job. :P

hah
try to aim for a low-traffic site

DBA.SE check!

1:56 PM
the irony~

@sp_BlitzErik Nice Blog Post

uch people are reading these things

2:17 PM
@sp_BlitzErik lastpass

i don't have any production data :D

@gbn me too, use it on the phone and web, client is solid on all platforms

@sp_BlitzErik Your client's production data?
The effect should be even better, I think

@AndriyM way better

@AndriyM i don't type words that can do those things on client systems

2:20 PM
@sp_BlitzErik how'd you know? (not a joke)
do you differentiate connections in any way?

the only time i'm touching a live client system is during a critical care
and we don't do the kind of stuff that can destroy data during those
it's as read-only as possible (aside from some temp tables)

Does that always happen after a morning coffee?

yes
fun fact: tempdb doesn't begin with a # sign.
@_@

2:37 PM
What's more, you can create a database with a name starting with a # and it won't be temporary. So confusing.

3:01 PM
if anyone of you know the answer

Q: Where is the pg_hba.conf file amendment on pg_admin 4?

Andy KOn pg_admin3, you have an option to change / amend the pga_hba.conf file as you can see here I tried to find a similar option in pg_admin 4 but to no avail. Has the option disappeared?

3:19 PM
Anyone is using VMWare Workstation 14.x?
I'm having some mouse issues

is it plugged in?

Has someone nicked your mouse ball?

remember having to clean lint out of those things?

I saved all mine in a jar.

@sp_BlitzErik yes, even though I don't have a baby...

well, babies are easier to fight

This is my current middle finger: i.imgur.com/RUDtx96.jpg

@McNets is it broken?

did you spill rogaine on your hand?

The tendon. (tendon is correct?)
It is made with titanium with one of our 3d printers

gbn
3:28 PM
@McNets yes, correct

Nope, when the vmware loose focus I need to open another windows and then return to virtual machine just to use the mouse.

4:18 PM

@sp_BlitzErik That should be a Super Star comment. Super Star as in Patrick Star.

Q: Directly access PostgreSQL's Multi-Version Concurrency Control

Bartosz BilickiIs it possible to directly access Multi-Version Concurrency Control as client of PostgreSQL database? I would like manually browse/add/delete/restore old versions. My use case requires keeping multiple previous versions of the data (I have a lot of data and a lot of versions). In the official d...

sort of weird

very weird
seems like a better fit for temporal tables, no?

6:46 PM
sorry! will remember about (not to) crosspost. What to do with this question? there is no option to close as duplicate of stackoverflow question. Also I find comment from @dezso is valuable. — Bartosz Bilicki 1 min ago
@dezso should add an answer to the so question

So here is an awesome piece of code-archaeology on a MySQL oddity.

A: Where does the default Earth radius in ST_Distance_Sphere come from?

Evan CarrollOk, this is hilarriuusss. I tracked this down. In an old copy of lwgeom/lwgeom_spheroid.c in PostGIS 1.3 you can see this, /* * This algorithm was taken from the geo_distance function of the * earthdistance package contributed by Bruno Wolff III. * It was altered to accept GEOMETRY objects a...

How EarthDistance an obscure PostgreSQL module is a responsible for a totally wacko default in MySQL.

Hello
I often would like to post questions on dba.stackexchange but the table names and where clause strings are often truly related to my customer's data which I don't want to make public
Is there a trick to anonymizing queries easily ? Do you just make an example of the offending code ?

@A_V plan explorer does that

Q: Anonymize SQL Code

MagierOnce a user of DatabaseAdministrators told me a webservice or something similar that can help to make SQL Code obfuscated so that meaningful/distinctive fields / column names / variables are anonymized and won't allow any conclusions to companies or products. I need this to post code into questio...
