7:02 PM
You're just trying to seduce me away from P.SE and join your DBA stack exchange, I'm onto you!

huzzah! Also, yes, I want all good passionate DBAs to join us here. Even if they're just part-time DBAs like I am.

JNK
im not really even a dba at all
i just do a lot of tuning

I feel the same way... I end up getting forced to fix databases but I'm not a DBA

@JNK psssst, you're an administrator of databases ....
ok, bbiab. Time to go scrounge up a bowl of soup at my apartment so I can get back to work so I can leave in about 4 hours to go teach class.

@Rachel Well, wer're mostly grown-ups here with girlfriends and wives and shit. You'll probably get a lot less horny net geek bollocks here than you'd get in general.

7:14 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells If I wanted that I'd go hang out on gaming :)
I like your chat because it's active, and the people seem nice

@Rachel That's the point. We're grown-ups here.
Actually database folks tend to be fairly grown-up by I.T. professional standards.

I'm sorry... did I miss something?

I don't think so.
I had a gamer-grrl friend who used to habitually use a male nick because she was sick of getting hit on by 12-year olds.

JNK
this one looks interesting

Q: Window functions cause awful execution plan when called from a view with external parametrized 'where' clause

GSergI had this issue long time ago, I found a workaround which suited me and forgot about it. But now there's that question on SO so I'm willing to bring this problem up. There's a view that joins few tables in a very straightforward way (orders + order lines). When queried without a where clau...

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells I was just confused as to where that topic came from, that's all

JNK
7:18 PM
parameter sniffing?

@Rachel Just a reference to people being friendly.
But the locals are pretty good value here.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells oh ok, thought you were accusing me of being one of those girls pretending to have an interst in IT to hang out with all the cute geek boys (it's happened)

@Rachel No. Nothing like that. Just observing that a lot of the regulars here are 30-somethings and 40-somethings who have lives, significant others and a degree of maturity that tends to be lacking in the internet community at large.

JNK
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells your mom does

Actually I was sticking around in this chat because I wanted to know what made it so active

JNK
7:22 PM
d00d

@JNK lol :)

And that's often the case with people who work with databases - it's usually a discipline that people move into rather than start out in.

JNK
@Rachel - the quality of our reparte

@JNK N1gg3rf4g! I'l h4ck y4 acct with mi 1337 h4x0r sk1llz.
My Cl4n L4dr's a M0d. I'll g3t y4 acct k1ckd

JNK
my l33t name would be like KWEry 7UNeR

7:24 PM
5QL 5imi4n
2

The sad part is I can read that stuff nowadays....

JNK
lol

K stop talking, i need to go back to work

I think the best quote I ever heard about that was JWZ saying somewhere on usenet that he used to work for the guy who invented the smilie.
@Rachel Oh dear, this is just the beginning.
We all need to get back to work. It doesn't quite work that way.

That's one of the many advantages of dual monitors... chat window in one and code compiling in another :)

7:28 PM
Oh, yes. You can never have too much screen real estate.

JNK
i normally have chat in one and all my executing procs in another
we use term services a lot so i have like 10 sessions open on the big monitor

7:48 PM
There's a new neckbeard in town:
this is annoying, sorry. i.stack.imgur.com/eLcUi.jpg

@BenBrocka That is quite disconcerting

JNK
what is that I don't even

I have no idea

8:33 PM
@JNK I believe you mean triple monitors

JNK
i got 1 monitor and one laptop
and the "big monitor" is only like 20"

@JNK ewwww, that sucks.

JNK
its OK
we have to do laptops so i can work from home
b/c there are security implications due to the nature of our data

I need to get a real monitor for home...just a bleh looknig flatscreen 22" and a 44" monster, and my laptop's 14" screen

JNK
so i can only access the data with my machine and a card and an id associated with that card

8:37 PM
none are great for designing at home

gbn
Another reason for the traffic here could be a common interest. Less fragmented than others

JNK
true

@JNK they keep saying that about ours, but they're more worried I might go rogue with the apps, and yet, we keep our repos on kiln/fogbugz.
So I could just as easily log in from home and download everything.

JNK
yeah same here
not exactly the same but we have a lot of silly rules

nothing screams "I don't get it" louder, I believe.

JNK
8:41 PM
most of ours stem from dealing with govt agencies

gbn
Is @dtest still around?

JNK
they are basically checkboxes on a list a senator wrote
that we need to be able to check off regardless of if it makes sense or not
we have a whole separate infrastructure for govt data
including separate physical network, cabling, servers, etc

@dtest I summon thee with amazing summoning powers ...

JNK
but nothing is stopping me from just downloading the data from the separate network
but the box says "separate network" so we spend tens/hundreds of thousands doing it
to get the govt contract

gbn
No reason, but we need a MySQL Rep in here...
Anyway, I'm off. G'nite all

JNK
8:46 PM
night

9:04 PM
@jcolebrand fine! i cometh.. .or something

22 mins ago, by gbn
Is @dtest still around?

JNK
i think you were summoned as a token MySQL personage

hah, yeah. unfortunately, been focused on switching our small-company's developing process up. as much as I enjoy the havoc that ensues, it keeps me busy
@JNK there's always a token something guy, isn't there?

You mean "that guy"?

strange that @gbn's flag didn't show up to summon me. I thought it would add an alert if anyone did that (not just mods) if the u ser had been in chat before
or is there a time-limit...like has been in chat within Y days
@simon don't be that guy :(

9:11 PM
@DTest this

@DTest I try and avoid it, sometimes it just happens though

yeah, last time i was here, we still had the snowman notifications.

9:25 PM
I still miss the snowmen :(
We need little sun notifications for summer

JNK
i think it should be room specific
DBA should get disk platters
meta should get an image of a duplicate question about a question ban

little brains for cog sci

JNK
yes
precisely

I think the snowman might have been pure CSS though

I didn't check, but probably

9:32 PM
@BenBrocka Might be more appropriate to a Zombie SE.

@jcolebrand it looked like it at least. asked jin

mmm, brains

Braaaains
Braaaaaaains

Yep, it was pure CSS
such fun stuff

you guys are such tools

don't you mean 700lz

|-|0w d1d 1 m155 7h@7 c0n\/3r5@710n?

I thought 5QL 5imi4n was much better.

Jin RE the snowman:
@BenBrocka he is Joaquin and he has a real name and feelings, you know????

feelings go away if your brains are eaten.

I don't think snowmen have brains

9:53 PM
SELECT brain FROM magic_hat
3

maybe in your magic hat!

JNK
...CROSS APPLY udf_MagicHat(brain) returns NULL

Good news, Missingno is availible at CVS

10:31 PM
@jcolebrand - what's going on?

hell if I remember, hold please
4 hours ago, by gbn
@JNK You need to ping @Rory, He just lost 15% of his rep on SO
I believe there was a question migration from Stack Overflow
So I'm pretty sure the takeaway is "don't do a rep recalc anytime soon"

yeah - looks like I lost or was going to lose lots of rep
is there anything I should do?
I'm not too fussed about it really - if you guys need to reorganise things then you do.
no point spending too long worrying about rep loss

@Rory Look it at from the other angle... you just got a massive rep boost on dba.se instead! :)

sweet!
ok, well that's all from me. Good work making all this stuff work well.
actually, one question: does this mean that we should be asking all sql and database questions on dba.se instead of SO?

Pretty much anything but noddy SQL.

10:45 PM
@Rory I like to think of it as "ask expert level questions on dba.se, basic level syntax Q on SO, and for everything else, is it really that hard?"

10:56 PM
ok. I think the distinction becomes very blurred in the middle. but i'm sure you guys have discussed this lots so i'm not going to get into it now.
cheers, and goodnight!
