@gbn Thanks! Good to at least see the term used in official docs.

gbn
@BenBrocka it^s mixed and inconsistent
and you're welcome.

Yeah, as for my error message it seems like "distributed query" would be the more logical term to use
Querying linked servers definitely says "distributed" to me, "heterogeneous" is certainly a less common term and requires a bit more thinking to tease out the connection

gbn
homogeneous is the opposite of course
Oracle docs use heterogeneous too in places
and distributed
the error message is correct: a non SQL Server linked server

@JackDouglas Certainly appears to be how they're used. "tuning" is too vague for a tag imo.

gbn
for SS to SS, it is less important. For SS to non-SS then SSL expects ANSI compliance
Dunno why though

7:20 PM
@gbn Those servers should all be linked actually, that error means the query was hitting a non-linked server?
I didn't think you could even query a different server with that syntax unless it was linked
Oh, wait, do you mean a linked server that isn't SS?

gbn
@BenBrocka yes

Ah. All our servers are SS too (...I think, old system used pervasive, I don't think we left any of them). Does it just enforce ANSI compliance when reaching any linked server regardless then?

gbn
@BenBrocka to be honest, I've forgotten.

Not a big deal, doesn't break anything here anyway

Q: killing zombie children in parent processes

Pota OnasysSo I want to do the following: Set up a daemon that forks a bunch of processes. So the Daemon forks a bunch of processes then forks another bunch of processes the problem is the child processes might take a long time to exit. How do I prevent zombie children if the parent process has other work...

Is it wrong to giggle at this?

@jcolebrand does a downvote count?
@benbrocka absolutely not wrong. I laughed and shared :)

@DTest I wish I could kill zombie children at my job

@DTest sure why not?

@jcolebrand you're only saying that because you know you haven't gotten any downvotes..

Is there some way I can do a "WHERE EXISTS" style query when comparing more than one column? I need to copy records from a table but the PK is three columns
