@MontyWild You mentioned that when the Keel is applied to the ether that it's hard to move off course. Effectively, that means there is a "polarization" to or about the relationship. I'm trying to determine if that "polarization" (the tendency to move in just one direction) is a characteristic of the ether, the keel, or the relationship between the two.
15:44
@MontyWild If I'm understanding you correctly you want to describe a mechanism by which things can move by interacting with the aether where movement is biased along the aetheric vector.
What's the vibe you're wanting, high fantasy, steampunk, dieselpunk, SciFi?
Hello.
So...
Can I ask for worldbuilding feedback here?
I have a very simple plot idea.
Yes you can.
one min.
It is kinda long.
It says "this message is too long"?
How do I fix that?
15:52
Write smaller messages.
Break your question into parts.
Ask a simpler more focused question.
Hmm.
I don't know how to split a plot idea into parts.
Who, What, Where, When, Why,
Remove extraneous details.
Remember you're not trying to tell your story to me, you only need to provide the details that are relevant to your specific plot question.
Well I don't have much of a specific plot question.
Just looking for advice on my plot idea.
Okay so one min.
Will turn my plot idea into Who, What, Where, When, Why.
What do you mean by "Why"?
What do you want advice about? Because here's my plot can you give me advice about X? is a specific plot question.
Why things happen is very critical to any plot.
Hi guys, is it a good idea to post a question and answer it yourself? I have not seen anyone do it yet so I'm not sure if i am are allowed to or not.
Well, I am just asking for general advice.
So like: "here's my plot can you give me advice about it"
@DialFrost There's nothing prohibiting self answering a question. Try to make the question as beneficial to others as much as possible.
@sphennings Also this.
I mean.
@The_AH Also this.
@The_AH What sort of advice are you looking for? The more specific the question the easier it is to only provide relevant information.
@DialFrost Important to remember when doing a self-Q&A is that the question should still be answerable for others. A frequent mistake is to write the question without enough details yet an answer "mysteriously" guesses and uses these. But otherwise, self-Q&As are welcome.
16:07
@sphennings Okay so I am looking for advice on is the plot okay for a story and can I work with it also potential improvements on it.
@The_AH That's a very vague and subjective question. But if you want it answered start with a high level summary of the key elements of the plot. If additional information is needed you can provide that when asked.
Okay a few mins.
You may also want to think about what you want from the plot. Without knowing what you're wanting your plot to be the scope of potential improvements is incredibly vast.
It's your story. You're the ultimate authority. You should be asking yourself what are my objectives with this plot, and do I think my plot meets my objectives for it.
Can you tell me what you mean by "Why"? when you said Who, What, Where, When, Why.
The 5 Ws are a series of questions that a good news article is expected to capture.
* Who's involved?
* What happened?
* Where did it happen?
* Why did it happen?
16:17
Okay.
As a writer you can choose what elements to expose to your readers, and the answers may be unknown. But it's a useful structure for organizing your thoughts around events.
If someone murders the King and the plot revolves around figuring out who is responsible then why the King was murdered will likely be a very relevant plot detail.
I am going to start with What then Who then Where then Why and finally When.
16:47
@MontyWild You say your aether doesn't have eddies. Perhaps it's resistant to them. If something induced a perturbation to the vector the aether resists or corrects it. If a keel interacts with a correcting perturbation that could induce a force upon the keel. It could be something similar to a magnetorquer where the resistance to perturbation directly generates a force.
17:46
@VLAZ ah ok thanks

@DialFrost Usually, the purpose of self-answering is that you have a good worldbuilding question and you already have appropriate advice for the larger worldbuilding user base and wish to share it. No problem there - but it's recommended that you ask yourself whether or not you're just showing off or if you really have something that a lot of other people would benefit knowing about. We've had a number of people self-answer who were just trying to show off, or who were trying to propagate...
... an ideology, etc. That's not useful and is outside the spirit of what Stack Exchange is trying to do. An example of an appropriate self-answered question is worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/q/143606/40609, an example of self-answering after the fact is worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/q/147641/40609.
@The_AH Sphennings is giving you some really good advice. You don't want us to read your story (for example) and give general advice about it. I can tell you from experience (both as critiquer and critiqued) that you'll not like what you read. It's much better if you have specific questions. The short message limits are meant to help us focus on that goal. If you can't fit your question in 2-4 message blocks, I assure you, you're asking the wrong question. ...
... If you seriously want a review of your whole story, the very best advice we can give you (and really is friendly advice!) is to take a creative writing class.
