@Gryphon holy crap!
@Green Yeah, I'm low-key hoping it makes it to -1500 so I can change my avatar again.
@Gryphon best of luck. I wonder what it would take to get to - 2
-2000
@Green Doubt that's going to happen, and it's probably better if we just let it go at this point. They've given us a better apology, promised to talk with Monica, etc.
I mean, the post is getting close having 1000 points lower than the next most downvoted Meta.SE question, so we may have gone far enough.
Has anyone called made calls for people to be fired at SE?
... Based on the poor handling?
I mean, we don't know who was responsible, so not really? If the responsible party was disclosed, I'm sure there would be calls for their resignation.

Hey @Secespitus long time no read

@dot_Sp0T Hi, long time indeed
07:49
Also, regarding the new apology: the mods have apparently drafted an open letter in the Teacher's Lounge and some suspect that SE just tried to be faster than them... (it might get lost in the swarm of answers there, so I am placing the link here for anyone interested)
@dot_Sp0T How've you been?
in The h Bar, 9 mins ago, by Secret
Thus putting an absolute zero object in thermal contact with a nonzero temperature object, the absolute zero object first heats up with a jump in temperature corresponding to the first thermal excitation from the ground state, and then as it continues to heat up, it slowly follows the usual cooling curve pattern
in The h Bar, 4 mins ago, by Secret
This also means that fictional and game depiction of zero entropy behaviour makes no sense, because to reproduce the effects they suggest, is basically the same as having an absolute zero object of very high heat capacity, which is impossible because heat capacity tends to zero as temperature tends to absolute zero since it is correlated to the number of degrees of freedom the system can access
In other words, freeze rays obey a completely different kind of physics
08:35
in The h Bar, 7 mins ago, by Secret
In conclusion, a hypothetical "freeze ray system", is something akin to the heat death, having an energy diagram that looks something like this:
in The h Bar, 1 min ago, by Secret
Therefore, by integrating the density of states in the bottom half of this diagram, you end up with a divergent (or at least very large) value of energy, thus ensuring this thing has infinite specific heat capacity at absolute zero and infinite entropy
in The h Bar, 7 secs ago, by Secret
Thus, the freeze ray violates the third law of thermodynamics
I mean, you could have just asked me, and I could have told you "freeze rays don't work under current physics".
"freeze rays don't work under current physics" is not satisfying. Why it does not work is much more satisfying
It is the same as reading dystopian novels and getting afraid of dystopia is less satisfying than actually dive and feel the dystopia, and use that knowledge to prevent it from ever forming in the first place
Or more generally, understanding what actually happens at any idealised limit, and then use that to inform nonideal stuff. People have not done that enough for the impossible idealisations
@Secespitus lots of classwork at uni. doing a bachelor's while working is taking its toll and time...
> So the more powerful your ice-mage becomes the closer he can get to absolute zero, which is a mystically frightening state. Like other answers have stated, it means no movement of particles whatsoever. 0K is a state which no matter has ever reached
> in the real world and which breaks all kind of physics formulas. Approaching it is like approaching a black hole, so while an impossible godlike factor-10.000 firemage can reach 3 Million °C (almost as hot as the suns corona) - a factor-10.000 icemage can reach 0,029 K, which is a hundred times lower than the temperature of outer
> space. Some gases start to show crazy properties like super-fluidity, super-conductivity and more at these temperatures, as you create in principle a macroscopic coherent quantum wave.
That is all an excuse on not trying to figure out what will hypothetically happen at those impossibilities. "Physics" at impossibilities are actually more fun than most people feared
(comment to "0K is a state which no matter has ever reached in the real world and which breaks all kind of physics formulas")
Saying "it breaks" is not interesting, saying "how it breaks" is a lot a lot more interesting
Consequences of violating the 3rd law of thermodynamics:
1. Objects with infinite specific heat capacity at finite temperature (allow perpetual motion machines of the 3rd kind to become possible because now you have infinite heat baths)
2. Supercryogenicity: Objects that cools to some temperature T much faster than allowed by the third law due to absolute zero being the limit
3. Absolute zero become reachable (and contrary to what fiction told us, it is not interesting by itself and behave like any cold object)
4. Ground states of infinite degeneracy at very low energy levels (glasses do have nonzero degenerate ground states, but they are kind of hot, so they don't count)
In short: Cooling become a lot easier

ok sorry one more:
Extending (2): If something violates 3rd law, the object will reach absolute zero in an instantregardless of what its heat capacity is
otherwise, it has an unphysically high heat transfer coefficient close to infinite Wm-2K-1
But I think before it can does that it already heat up to nonzero temperature
13:20
More clarification:
If you have a substance which its heat transfer coefficient is around 800 Wm-2K-1 and yet you observe it cool things to 20 K in 5ms, then it violates the 3rd law of thermodynamics
Or better, if you have some air like substance which is such a poor heat conductor such that under convection, it transfers 20Wm-2K-1, and yet within 0.2s of contact, you already seeing liquid nitrogen droplets forming, then you are dealing with a supercryogen that violates the 3rd law of thermodynamics
for these kinds of substance, we can assume they have a "subnegative kelvin" temperature by extrapolating the cooling curve until the requested intersection in temperature and time lies on the curve

@dot_Sp0T Relatable, I am about to start my master thesis while working... looking forward to having this magical thing again in a half a year that people keep mentioning all the time - this so-called "spare time"...
16:08
Huh, so just noticed... Sara Chipps has a reputation score of 1 now, down from a high of 323... I assume that the mod diamond overrides the fact that under normal conditions she wouldn't be able to do much of anything on the site without it.
16:19
@Secespitus hahaha, you gotta take that time. Nobody's gonna give it to you
@AndyD273 pretty much
also hey @AndyD273 how's the life?
@dot_Sp0T pretty good for the most part
@Secret I'd suggest splitting it into sections so start with origins then do a section on realms with sub-chapters of Realms and Nowheres and the Unseen Realm. Next do a section on types of magic starting with the Classical and Non-classical Magic chapters then going through each type of magic in turn and finishing the section with Other Non-classical Magic. Finish the book with the Open questions then put the Undeciphered scripts as appendix.
I'm not sure what Kaifurs are and I don't know how Singularity Resentments, Belonging and Division and Nonexistence/Partial existence fit into your magic system so you'll have to work out what sections to put those in.
sounds like a plan
I am currently working on the realms part now
16:48
@Gryphon Some people noticed your avatar and are jumping up and down about you celebrating the animosity of the situation :)
Well, sort of.
More like a single jump, then move on.
17:34
Sup peeps
18:15
@Hosch250 Who even cares that much? Someone said something dumb, and other people showed their disappointment with the situation. One person decided to broadcast their disapproval slightly more... Welcome to the internet, it goes better if you act like an adult and don't let small things bother you.

Q: People Keep Asking Science Questions

overlordI've noticed that a lot of people are asking science questions without giving any kind of worldbuilding context. I have been guilty of this in the past. It can be tempting to post a question that you find interesting, but I think we should really start focusing on our worlds rather than posting ...

@Hosch250 Meh. People on the internet will get mad at me pretty much no matter what I do. If people I've never even chatted with got mad at me for this, I don't particularly care.
@Gryphon I find your avatar funny. Do you.
If we can't even laugh at the insanity of the situation, what's the point of being here.
3
@James Yes. It amuses me to consider the possibility that the entire thing is just an internal SE contest to see who's post can get the most downvotes.
Also, have you seen the new CoC yet, and if so, any general comments without the details you can't share?
@Gryphon Not yet no. I was gone all weekend, haven't even checked in to see if they have posted anything for the mods to look at.
Just general good/bad/ugly/short/long type stuff?
@James They did, right after the second apology post went up.
@Gryphon Maybe I will get a chance to look tonight, otherwise it'll be tomorrow. I'll share what I can.
Gotta run. Have a good night all.
21:52
Yup, ttyl.
