I am also now on every watchlist in the world. I mean, I was before too, but I probably just moved up a few priority levels on some of them.
I've gotta agree with ponytail here. I hate you so much.
00:34
@JasonClyde this is only a problem if space can vary independent of time. Yes, if you have a huge football field that dumps in a fraction of a second, you're gonna have a bad day. But, if the space dumps out at 1m^3/day....that won't matter.
Define hammerspace as a function of matter transfer rates across the portal boundaries. As mass increases, speed must decrease. So, if a user wants really fast access, they can only have a small space. If they want tons of space, it's just gonna take a long time to load or u load.
We see this in real life. On-die CPU cache is bonkers fast (nanoseconds) but small.
Hard drives are huge by comparison but many orders of magnitude slower.
A general approach is to design in trade-offs when building a system. They're are everywhere in nature.

Also inefficiencies. We've yet to produce a 100% efficient system, if it's an engine, a project management methodology, or a way to queue people. Everything has lag, delay, loss of time, loss of energy.

And what @NexTerren said.
01:02
Actually, luckily, I can give the football field sized one a long time to empty out
Largely by coincidence.
But I chose a rune type for that one that takes an hour to recuperate once the summoned hammerspace is destroyed.
@Green constant momentum hammerspace portals
here's something I've been thinking about -- if some Elven master craftsperson showed up in our world, what would you challenge them to make?
In general or with a specific elven lore in mind?
@Shalvenay
01:25
@JasonClyde more or less in general :)
Probably something it would be cool to combine with modern technology depending on what sorts of cool shit they can make.
Like if they can forge magical properties into a piece of metal, I'd like to see them make a magical machine part that would make the machine itself do something magic
ehehe, I was thinking more like something that is already made today
(that way, we have a standard to grade them by ;)
Hmmm
If I were a total asshole?
Fidget spinner.
Space elevator.
Seriously, either he knows what it is and he'd be completely indignant, or he'd be hilariously naive about what he's making
01:31
I mean, all he'd need to make is an outrageously long, outrageously strong cable.
@Gryphon eheheheh
one of my ideas, actually, was space-themed as well
albeit a lot more makeable by human hands than a space-elevator-cable
@JasonClyde that actually would be an interesting exercise -- go go ball bearing manufacturing XD
@Shalvenay I mean, the guy's an elven mastercraft person. One would assume he knows how to magically make things stronger. That's kinda one of the most common "magic item" things in fantasy.
@Gryphon that is true
But what was your space-themed idea?
@Gryphon the turbopump turbine wheel from a RD-180
01:35
The thing is, if we have him make something we can already make, there's not much of a point, since we could have made it. You've gotta find something that would be extremely useful, that we only need one (or a few) of, but that we can't make.
Actually, I've got a better idea. Get him to make a crucible for a fusion reactor. Something that can withstand the required temperatures and pressures while remaining solid.
@Gryphon eheh
I mean, if you have access to a magical smith, take full advantage.
@Gryphon I mean, my line of thinking was to see how he'd approach a problem that he's probably never faced before (dragon-breath-hot? sure. dragon-breath-in-pure-oxygen-your-steel-is-on-fire? don't think they've seen that before) but that we have, and see how their work stacks up to the existing part
Fair point. If we have permanent access to the guy, getting some test items first would be a good idea.
@Gryphon yeah, and the RD-180 turbopump turbine wheel I think would be a good challenge in that regard
01:48
Yep, a very high-stress part that has to operate perfectly at very high temperatures. That'd be an excellent test item.
02:01
@Gryphon yeah, the oxygen-rich atmosphere just adds to the difficulty XD
02:53
Oh, I just saw we're now down a second moderator. This is going to be really hard for the whole network to recover from.
I can't say I knew a CVN well, but from what I saw he was a good moderator.
03:39
@Gryphon and James had declared himself inactive.
@Green quite simply - if things get better
we can pull things back together
HDE has also declared himself inactive.
It'd be great if we, the great unwashed masses of the diamondless, could get some more, and clearer, information about what happened. We could make up our own opinions of who was in the right, who was in the wrong, what we should do about it, it would be so much easier to deal with if we just knew what we were talking about. Unfortunately, our corporate overlords don't seem to have a great deal of interest in transparency.
Oh, Monica herself just posted a very informative comment under James' answer to the "Thoughts from Worldbuilding Mods" post on meta a few hours ago.
That certainly gives us more information, although I'm going to wait until SE has a chance to explain their side of the story before making any judgements.
03:59
@Gryphon So . . . my thinking (and I know I've said this on meta, and I apologize for being repetitive) is that SO, Inc., is likely going to make a statement soon. I've heard . . . rumors . . . and with Monica back from Rosh Hashanah, I assume she will be more vocal. It would then behoove the company to respond - especially with all of the pressure they've been getting. I think that part of what's held them back so far has been a lack of personpower.
I am not sure why but I don't feel like living.
There should be a easy way to quit
Not sure why people procreate. Life is no fun at all.
Hi mike - It feels really unusual to have someone come in and say it out of the blue
though our moderators don't typically deal with folks who don't want to live any more - I really urge you to talk to someone about this.
I don't know where you are, and what's local to you, but there's probably great resouces that can help
We have a post of resources somewhere. If you'd like I can dig it up
It's just that I don't feel confident about myself and don't know what I am doing with my life
We have those days

9 hours later…
12:48
@PrisonMike I don't know you, but this might be for you.

1 hour later…
14:10
Morning all
14:39
@James sup!
@Green Trying to wake up. You?
I may have been up too late playing DnD
@James Trying to cope with an unexpected dose of corporate disillisionment. It's a lovely morning.
@Green You just described my day job.
@James Our jobs suck then.
@Green Ding ding ding. Give the man a bagel. And a glass of whiskey.
14:49
@James glass? Bottle please.
@Green Well you have to be classy and pour it into a glass at least.
@James Fiiiiinnneee.
@Green I've decided that classy just means that something is inefficient or uncomfortable...
@James or inordinately expensive.
Fair point.
14:52
...but everyone wants it because it's "Classy". Rich people and their status symbols.
Also. OCD makes it REALLY difficult to be an inactive moderator...flags keep popping up and I hate notifications that are unread/handled.
@James heh. I'd imagine :)
15:42
@Green Aw, that's too bad to hear. I thought you loved your new job...
16:07
Honeymoon is over. :D
16:50
@James it sure is.
@NexTerren I still like the work that I do and the people I work with. There's just some brittleness and fragility and I'd prefer wasn't there.

2 hours later…
18:28
@Green @NexTerren @AndyD273 Anyone a master of sorting content in xcel?
I have a column with content in this format: xxxxx-12345 and I want to sort on the second half...I'd prefer not to have to edit all the content to do so though...
@James Are either of the two sides of the - a fixed length?
like, 5 characters-5 characters
@AndyD273 let me double check
18:44
You could do this: in a blank column enter this formula: =RIGHT(A1,SEARCH("-",A1)-1) and replace A1 with the cell that has that value you want to sort. Then sort that new column.
first section is always four letters second section varies from 5 - 7
@AndyD273 Just looking for an alphabetical sort
Hmm, there is a flaw in that formula anyway...
19:24
@James I'm just looking at how I'd handle it, without knowing any of the details. Basically you need to remove everything before the -, and then sort by what comes after it. There is probably a way to write a script to do that for you, but if you want an easier way then you can just use formulas.
=RIGHT(A1, LEN(A1)-FIND("-",A1))
That one will work:
