@James If say 500,000 low skill workers happened to all decide to come to your city to find work, how well would that go. I'm not talking about "managed" as in "you are a carpenter, so you have to go here." More like a jobs board. "you are a carpenter, here is a list of companies that are in need if your skills in these cities, which ones do you want to apply for?"
Thing is, though, a lot of businesses don't even advertise jobs.
They use the old-boy network and people going door-to-door old-fashioned style.
And the ones who do already use Monster, LinkedIn, etc.
13:52
@AndyD273 Bothers me less, but that's still a whole lot of extra, easily abused, bureaucracy in my mind.
14:22
@James There are probably existing free market services that could be used, like Monster, LinkedIn, etc. Just have to promote it to farmers and others that are looking for low skill stuff too. But really, this could go toward fixing the guest worker program, and maybe help with some of the illegal immigration stuff too. Have recruiting centers in Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, etc.
The workers get vetted, then bus them up for the summer, take them to the farms/businesses that need guest worker help, then send them home with some money, minus taxes.
The farmers would have to go through the system, which ensures that they pay a fair wage, and that the guest workers are treated well, and that they all make it back home when their term is up.
Dang. My mind is weird.
I was looking at buying a mustang from the BLM the other day. Part of the rules were reporting if anything bad happened to the horse.
That last post by @AndyD273 immediately made me think of those rules....
@23fc9a62-56de-47fb-97b4-737890 First question, where would you put a wild horse?
That was another part of the rules.
You have to provide a shelter, a minimum-sized corral, and have fences a certain height.
6 foot fences for untrained horses, 5 foot for pre-trained ones.
Electric doesn't count.
The guy who taught me how to ride is good with horses. I was thinking of buying one and hiring him to train it.
Minimum size for a corral is 20'x20'.

I've never been a migrant farm worker on a guest worker visa, so I don't know what it's like, or what kind of arrangements they make with the farmers RE: food and shelter. I bet it wouldn't be hard to take a shipping container and turn it into a comfortable bunk house, and probably not cost that much either
And you have to report if it dies, escapes, etc.
@AndyD273 Probably not too hard to set up military-style barracks, or a campground area.
Sure. The idea of the shipping container is that it would make it easy to move it to where it's needed.
FWIW, that might not be too bad of an idea to set up temporary barracks for homeless people in situations like 2008, when the banks foreclosed on a bunch of houses.
So they have at least somewhere to stay out of the elements while they try to get their life back on track.
Maybe. But the homeless problem in california is way worse right now.
Yeah. TBH, though, a lot of those people need to go through drug rehabilitation.
14:44
I know
And you can't force them to do it, really, either.
And how do you help someone you can't really help? It's a tough nut.
@AndyD273 Good morning, Solo. Good morning, everyone else.
@NexTerren Feeling any better?
@AndyD273 Much.

Also, thanks for getting the han solo song stuck in my head...
Great!

Thinking about going back to school for cyber security.
Getting a masters from Embry Riddle.
I'm already accepted into the program.
But I got a job and had to cancel my classes.
@23fc9a62-56de-47fb-97b4-737890 We have negative unemployment.
LOL.
Not sure if/how I'll adjust my working schedule if I need to.
My work offered to work with me as needed, or I could work part-time for a few years.
Or I could join the army reserves and then they'd probably cover it.
And then I'd have time to work part-time too.
Or I could do smoke-jumping.
I hear they pay really well, and I could do that during the summer and take a couple months off during the worst fire months.
I'd also learn a lot off really good outdoor skills in the training.
That's a really broad range... Cyber security or smoke jumping...
No, that would be cyber security AND smoke jumping.
15:20
@AndyD273 I dunno about that... both firefighters and cybersecurity professionals deal with firewalls.

@NexTerren Dadun-tsch
15:37
@NexTerren Well played

So I just had an idea for a recipe, the Benedict Cucumber patch. It's eggs benedict with a side of cucumber salad.

@AndyD273 This place is pun-tastic this morning.

1 hour later…
@NexTerren So, what is it?
"The gorgonorhynchus is a member of the proboscis worm species. It shoots out a white appendage to capture food."
@NexTerren huh, yup

2 hours later…
19:27
Ugh. I hate budget season.
@NexTerren So I am going to mess with my players tonight. I have a demon (Nycoloth), that can fly, teleport and cast darkness. I am going to have a warlock in the room that is rather squishy but the Nycoloth is going to cast darkness on him so he is more difficult to hit/target. Plus some random cultists that will all be able to cast dissonant whispers, which can make the players run away if they fail a wisdom save.
@Green Hey
Get in here slacker.
Work's not that important.

@James Nice, nice, nice.
Tell me how it goes!
21:06
@NexTerren I hope to knock at least one of them down to zero...makes battle more dramatic.
@NexTerren My brother said it's really disgusting.
@James Playing D&D 4e, which has (ridiculously so) the most bullet spongey PCs, my players complain before they even reach their first death saving throw. :(
@NexTerren lol
@James A couple of them will roll natural 20s and get boosts and sweep the fight without breaking a sweat.
@23fc9a62-56de-47fb-97b4-737890 That's what happened last time.
