What can a scientist in in the Star Wars galaxy be working on in the canon New Republic?

05:44
howdy everyone
@bilbo_pingouin What's up?
06:02
not much... starting work :)
@JDługosz and you?
06:16
@bilbo_pingouin same, mostly.
07:12
@JDługosz Btw, have you relocated, or are you working during the night now...? IIRC, you are US-based (or were), aren't you?
@bilbo_pingouin Yes, I've been up nights (mostly). got some seasonal sinus misery that's worse at night so I can't sleep. But, I think I’m nocturnal by nature anyway. In the summer time, 2AM is the perfect time for a walk because it's not an oven.
Right now, I’m reading the tutorial on Blender.
@JDługosz I'm pretty sure that's someone's last words...
To keep it interesting, I'm using 2.80 beta with UI/UX changes (three years’ worth) so the correlation between the tutorials and the program can vary.
@JDługosz I get you there... the problem is that every now and then, one needs to rest...
@bilbo_pingouin Years ago, I used POV and got good at it. That’s all text input, like programming. No UI to worry about!
My next video is on the appearance of the horizon and whether or not it appears curved (and different things people mean by that).
07:20
I'm also not a big fan of GUIs... much less developing them!
LaTeX 4eva ;-)
@JDługosz looking forward to it! That reminds me that I still did not subscribe... sorry about that. Must be done at home.
Hmm, it would be a cruel easter egg if programs switched their UI to Pie Menus today.
that would definitevely stress a lot of people!
07:38
@bilbo_pingouin Guess you also browse the web with lynx.
@Mephistopheles every now and then yes...
also using mutt
Good aftermorning all.
Happy time zone
@Mephistopheles actually I use elinks... lynx is a bit outdated
08:17
@bilbo_pingouin I'm using Waterfox.
never heard of it...
yet another firefox clone?

@Mephistopheles It appears your question game has improved substantially since you've been going more abstract and less memes. Lots of upvotes, no close votes.
Huh, so here's a much more interesting Great Filter option for the Fermi Paradox, which is hinted at in today's Schlock Mercenary; What if there have been other advanced civilizations, but there is a certain threshold that once you cross it you discover something so amazing that it causes your entire civilization to "go somewhere else", basically removing you from the galaxy.

3 hours later…
15:54
@AndyD273 That's more optimistic than most great filter theories, so I kinda like it.
Now that I'm thinking about it, there is a scene very much like this in the Void series by Peter F Hamilton, where an alien species figured out a way to transcend, and 95% of the population does, leaving behind a remnant that decided they'd rather be pastoral. Turns out that pastoral living kind of sucks, but they couldn't figure out how to turn the machine back on to join the ones that moved on.
A couple of the main characters show up and figure it out, hoping to use it themselves, but it doesn't work on them. However the remnant is finally able to move on.
@Gryphon I know, right?

Q: The network's official Twitter account is up and running again. What content do we want to share?

HDE 226868As of late yesterday, Stack Exchange has revived its official Twitter account, @StackExchange. It had been used intermittently/actually-not-at-all for several years, but now it's being resuscitated for the express purpose of promoting awesome content around the network. As a Community Manager put...

If anyone has questions about ^^, I can probably answer them (or pass them on up, TBH). . .
@HDE226868 Looks interesting. I wonder how often posts will be tweeted, and although I doubt that they have official numbers like "once every hour" or anything yet, it'd be nice to know if the official SE people have ranges/estimates.
@Gryphon AFAIK, that's still being worked on while they see how many submissions they get, and from which sites.
@HDE226868 That's what I thought it would probably be, just asking in case they had an estimate.
@Gryphon I haven't heard anything yet; I can let you know when I do.
17:47
Thanks!
No problem!
I'm actually super excited about this, because it's going to be a way to do community promotion of high-quality stuff - not just HNQ list material.
18:10
@HDE226868 "Please be careful about the posts you suggest for tweeting." It's a lost cause. Some over sensitive want-to-be-victim will decide that some post by some network has something that can be twisted and mutilated beyond recognition, and so the whole thing must be purged with virtue signaling fire. The only solution is to just post good stuff and completely ignore any and all hate.
"Good" in this case is what we decide is good, not what they decide is good.
@AndyD273 We definitely can't avoid people completely overreacting to things, yeah. But there are still probably some things that shouldn't be tweeted, even by most people's reasonable standards. I'm trying to come up with a good example - worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/q/130384/627 might be one, but I'm sure I can find something better.

Q: A method to cause maximum pain to a human

MedwedianPresidentI am currently searching for a new execution method to be used in my fictional psychotic dictatorship. After introducing methods such as decompression, boiling, surgical torture (being dissected alive without anesthesia) or slow dissolution in acid, the dictator is still not satisfied, saying tha...

I think >95% of the people on the site - and almost certainly everyone here - are more than capable of figuring out that some things shouldn't be suggested. The note's for the 5% who aren't.
@Secespitus Very good example.
@HDE226868 Sure. I agree that we can/should put our best foot forward, and thankfully it'll be a curated list, not some automated thing. I just hope we can avoid self censorship based on what some random person on the dumpster fire that is twitter may or may not get offended about.
@AndyD273 I think I agree.
18:21
@AndyD273 Please don't insult perfectly good dumpster fires by comparing them to Twitter. What did dumpster fires ever do to you?
6
@Gryphon Thankfully nothing. Mostly because I stay far far away from them. Just like Twitter
At least a dumpster fire can keep you warm.
@AndyD273 This is true. It also smells better than Twitter does.
Careful guys! If someone with a Twitter account walked by and took a screenshot - imagine the outcry!!
18:40
@Secespitus I think hating on twitter is fashionable enough at the moment that we'd probably be ok.
Fortune magazine put out the top 50 most trusted companies in the world, and twitter isn't even on the list. Facebook comes in at 44, so at least they did better than twitter.

I'm doing stuff in the magic theory, feel free to come over and take a gander
20:19
@Mephistopheles Are these ganders that magically turn into geese?
@Hosch250 Wh... Wha?
I'm not going to take a magical gander without a warranty. Who knows what it could do.
No, just homing curses that lock onto your DNA
And severe eye damage
@Hosch250 Are ye there
?
Yeah.
Need me?

If anyone has a moment, the first of our new sandbox questions appears ready for prime time. Could we get a few more eyes to look at it? Thanks! worldbuilding.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/7183/…

Q: The Elementary Evil vs You /Animatronics 2: Judgement Day/ We need a weakness!

MephistophelesSo, Anon has had enough of the DM abusing his poor creations (the chromatic dragons). Wanting a better fate for them, he wraps the DM in unbreakable chains, forged in the heart of a neutron star, and throws him into the Duna. He has also prepared a special surprise for the adventurers, as "repla...

"Mad Foxy misses nightguard and slides for 5 meters after punching through a brick wall"
I'm sure I'll spend the next 24 hours editing
So I personally think that sandbox question looks ok, but I'm also not sure if some people might think it is too broad or something, since it's looking for a possible explanation, instead of getting people to poke holes in an existing idea

Tobias F.Gravity magic - How does it work? Tags: magic-system science-based gravity In my world everyone is capable of casting magic. It is possible for a single person to cast as many different types of magic as he/she wishes, assuming they know the spells. Every person also has an affinity to a spec...

I think it's OK on the too broad side. I could see someone going with unclear, but if someone makes that case simply editing in a bolded sentence with a question mark should fix the issue.
@TheMattbat999 Hi
I have to leave in a couple minutes, but what's up?
How are ya, Andy?
I am doig good. Playing Minecraft

MephistophelesSo, I'm not sure why but this one was put on hold: How can The Temple of Elementary Evil reliably protect itself against kinetic bombardment? So, why was it put on hold?
