@James Hey!

4 hours later…
07:12
@HDE226868 I got that. We need statistics to know what we are dealing with. I don't know if we want to have a selected image, or just focus on kicking blatant cases of spam. But do spam ever make it to the HNQ?
On the other hand, I have seen questions that did not fit our scope make it there... and being closed later. IMHO, that could be avoided as it might mislead people not yet in the community.
07:36
@bilbo_pingouin Spam's deletable - this is for non-closable and non-deletable questions
Non-closable is debatable...
once closed, it gets out of the HNQ... but closing might be slower than hammering them out of the HNQ
this is what I meant, why would we use that option?
I mean, mods close questions only on extremely clear cases... aka spams. And those get deleted and thus out of HNQ.
Now they get a new hammer. For very clear cases, it is just redondant.
So we might consider discussing if/when that new shiny hammer should be used (by mods).
Note that that's also suggested in the Meta post
@bilbo_pingouin No, it's not - it's very explicit that the thing you're talking about shouldn't be used if the question should be closed and the question should just be closed instead
Please read the meta post :)
most questions get closed by users and not mods
@bilbo_pingouin Umm... Which part?
@bilbo_pingouin Sure - this is kind of the point
the part about kicking questions out of the HNQ
07:45
@bilbo_pingouin Yeah...
you're just ignoring the question... when should that option be used?
@bilbo_pingouin Very rarely
still not answering ;)
If the CMs knew beforehand when it would need to be used, then they'd hard code that use case into it beforehand
they specifically left it to each community to decide on its use
I'm asking, when do we, as WB's community, want it to be used
07:47
@bilbo_pingouin Then ask on meta
... which is precisely my point since yesterday.
But if it is clear for anyone here in chat, then why bother
@bilbo_pingouin Put it this way: if this were QC chat and not WB chat, my answer would be 'I'll use it when I see a question that shouldn't be on the HNQ but shouldn't be closed or deleted' and you'd just have to trust my judgement on that (as you do with all the other mod tools I have)
good, and my follow-up question then would be, please provide an example
In the one time I would have used it, it would have been for moderation reasons, so I wouldn't particularly have been allowed to discuss it with the community
if the question is not deleted, and gets kicked out of HNQ, it will be seen... so you would not discuss it before, but might afterwards
07:54
@bilbo_pingouin We discussed it afterwards anyway, for other reasons :P
Yes, because, it is not a clear case of spam (which is handled by other means), so the mods using that option might be acountable for it. In all fairness, at least to the OP. Since they get their questions out of a source of tasty internet points, for a question that was not deemed particularly bad to get closed.
It might seem unfair, unjust and particularly subjective.
For me, clear (as clear as it can get) rules set beforehand, prevent (or limit) that resentment.
@bilbo_pingouin If you want to ask on meta, there's absolutely nothing stopping you from asking on meta...
I know from experience, that I might be very picky on some details... and that sentiment isn't always shared. Thus I wanted to see in the chat, if some people were seeing it the same way...
So far seems I'm alone in there... so, discussing alone, I can do it off-line ;-)

5 hours later…
12:46
This question is a nice illustration... tex.stackexchange.com/questions/479232/…
It is clearly out of scope... is on the HNQ right now, but on-hold
it's possible that it gets out when the cache gets updated...
but for now it stays on HNQ
and has been for about 2 hours
ok, cache seems to have catched up
aren't closed question supposed to be out of HNQ?
it got out... but there is a 15 minutes caching time
And there isn't the same caching time for question banned from HNQ ?
13:25
There is. It says so in the main post.

1 hour later…
14:28
@AndyD273 @Mephistopheles @Green The cost per journal if we order 20 is 37.50, lets call it a hair over 40 since I will have to order them all and mail them off to people...
They could hypothetically be cheaper in the future but there are 250 bucks in setup fees for the first batch.
They will have "worldbuilding" stamped or printed on the front cover, and the poster art of the site design will be printed inside the front cover.
Does this need to be closed? It feels really broad at the moment.

Q: A weapon that only works against the powerful

wipA class of Tyrants has been abusing the Oppressed for decades, centuries ; taking everything they could from them. But the Oppressed cannot endure anymore, they have to fight back, before everything disappears. Luckily there are smart members in this oppressed group; and some that have acc...

15:00
@James which page style are you going for?
And can we pitch it at SE to see if they want to help subsidize it a bit to increase the initial order from 20 to 75 for swag purposes? That would lower the cost.
@AndyD273 I am leaning toward blank pages, but honestly I don't really care. Lined would be fine too.
@AndyD273 I can ask
Not sure if they will be interested.
Blank pages sounds good to me.
It was going to be my suggestion
@James Might not. I know there was something from @MonicaCellio a while back with a swag update, something along the lines of "yes, eventually, but our graphic designers are super swamped right now." But if someone has already done all the work and made all the plans maybe that would help things along.
@AndyD273 Definitely worth asking.
So do we have to get 20 interested people with $40 first?
15:15
@AndyD273 Hire a new one?
It's not like there's a shortage of them.
@Hosch250 Sure, but then you have to pay them, give them benefits, buy equipment, etc. You can't just hire people if there is no money in the budget for it. Companies don't work like the DSA, where you can apparently just print money to pay for things.
Maybe they grew too big then, and need to cut back?
@Hosch250 Like Buzzfeed and VICE?
I don't know what those are, LOL.
But really, if you grow too big to support your sites, you're going to cut back whether you like it or not.
@Hosch250 News sites that have had to lay off huge numbers of workers in the last few months.
15:22
Maybe we should nationalize the industry /s
It rather strikes me as peculiar that the very people so opposed to nationalism support nationalizing things.
Heh. Well, it's ok if they are the ones in charge, because at least they know they'll do it right.
@James Huh? I mean I was just joking (thought the human skin part made that obvious) besides, I keep my notes in my head.
@James I prefer blank, so sketching is easier. :-) Thanks for getting the quote! Which size is this for?
(And I definitely want at least one.)
@James FYI, no thanks. I don't use notebooks--I end up giving them away so they don't collect dust. Also, I don't participate seriously enough--I'm just along for the ride.
@AndyD273 it's worth asking. I think they've said they're not going to do site-specific swag any more, but since we have a site design, were going to get swag (we're the first designed site that doesn't), and have someone to do the legwork, maybe they'd help?
15:31
@MonicaCellio What I was hoping too. I asked that in your last post that got a reply from them, but never got a reply. If @James has done most of the work for them already pro bono, and all they have to do is cover production cost and put them into mailers for the top 75 (minus people who don't reply to the "what's your address" question)...
@MonicaCellio This is for the standard size like... 8x6 I think it is
@James great, thanks. The link came up on the pocket size, which is too small for such glorious art.
@MonicaCellio Its 4.5X6.9
Actually it may be the 5X8.25
let me double check
Looking at that one you linked, their price does seem to be a bit better? $22.95 each, and only $100 setup? And that's also for the 5"x8.5"
@AndyD273 That link is NOT safe for work..
15:36
So $27 instead of $37
@Hosch250 Yeah, I don't know why they chose that as their sample picture?
@AndyD273 Its 100 for the setup of the name stamped on the front and then 150 for the setup of the poster being printed inside the cover. So 250 for setup total.
Ah, ok
OK, I see that now
@AndyD273 I know a place you can spend that much on a single notebook.
Notebooks with laser-cut wooden covers. Got one for my brother's birthday.
@Hosch250 Hmm, I have a friend with a laser cutter... I wonder what it would take to get the insides for a full binding.
15:48
Cardtorial is the place.
There is the estimate for reference
Price doesn't change if we alter the notebook color and page format (lined vs blank)
I just forgot to mention the color and format when I first asked for the quote.
This probably warrants a meta post I suppose...
@James either of those sounds good.
@MonicaCellio Its the bigger one for reference :)
@James just saw, yes. That's a good size.
@James yup, getting a feel for how many people are interested would be good.
Ill jump on that this afternoon hopefully. It'd be good if we could just get SE to cover the setup fees...that would cut the price significantly per journal.
15:56
It'd be 25 per book, plus shipping...given that I have to mail stuff to people.
That would make a big difference!
16:50
@James Plus then you wouldn't have to have it be a firm 20 to get the price affordable. The first price break is 50, so unless you're doing a really big order there is no price per book difference between 5 and 40.
@AndyD273 good point

Q: Could a living creature produce graphene?

MephistophelesThe thing about organics is that they can very precisely build themselves up, from a molecular level. They can take various, otherwise useless stuff like goethite and chitin and, through the power of engineering, turn it into one of the strongest biogenic material to date. So, graphene is this w...

notice me
@Mephistopheles Why?
@James Because I'm an attention whor... I mean, I posted a question that's important to me and a topic I wanted to get over
@Mephistopheles Well ok then :D
k
So, Tang-Lau method
I don't like the 800 °C part
@Mephistopheles Is bacteria an option?
apparently that is something that they can do
17:16
@AndyD273 Yeah, that requires graphite oxide
which requires the method
If I'm correct
17:34
Wait, these are dragons? and you're worried about 800C? They find some high in carbon organic material, burn it really hot, collect the graphene oxide, feed it to the symbiotic bacteria, make graphene.
18:17
@AndyD273 That's... actually a pretty good idea
remids me of
@Mephistopheles I want to answer your question, but the question doesn't say they are dragons. I only (think I) know that because you bring it up in here. Can you mention that they are dragons, if that is a true statement. If not, you can just tell me that here
@AndyD273 I want to make dragons as op as biology allows, then later repurpose their traits for other creatures
18:34
@Mephistopheles Fire breathing sheep. I approve.
4
@AndyD273 NOOOOOOOOOOO! Bad AndyD273! That's such a terrible idea its problems have more layers than an onion.
@Mephistopheles Plus burning wool smells really bad.
@James Don't you see? That's just an added defense mechanism. Like skunks!
@James The flammability of the sheep is a bigger concern
Hmm, so the sheep eat grass. In their four part cybernetic stomachs the grass is first brought to 800C. Then in the second stomach it is mixed with bacteria that turn the graphene oxide into graphene. In the third and fourth stomachs the graphene is refined and processed. It is then used to grow the sheeps wool. Farmers sheer the sheep with diamond bladed sheers, and spin and weave it into ballistic armor.
The dragons also grab and eat the graphene sheep as they are an important source of natural graphene.
18:41
I have a feeling if these sheep could speak they would simply say: "Kill me"
@AndyD273 A graphene-wooled, fire-breathing sheep is terrifying. Something that eats those is something I would not like to meet.
I love the smell of napalm in the morning, goes well with CLF3... AAAAARGGGoopjuéca
@Gryphon Yes, they are called dragons
@AndyD273 I thought they eat fish
@Mephistopheles I get the feeling that CLF3 smells almost identical to melting flesh.
18:42
@Mephistopheles Not any sheep I've ever met
@AndyD273 I was talking about dragons
HTTYD, anyone?
the one with the fighter jet dragon with a literal plasma shaped-charge blast?
@Mephistopheles "literal plasma shaped-charge blast" I'm not sure all those words mean what you think they mean.
@AndyD273 I read it of the wiki, blame them
I dropped the concept of plasma weapons anyway
what shape does plasma have?
@AndyD273 On a second thought, it might have been acetylene instead of plasma
my RAM is fuzzy
18:46
@Mephistopheles Needs to defrag?
So, I dropped plasma weapons for automatic micro-fusion grenade launchers
@AndyD273 The RAM!?
@Mephistopheles Too random
@AndyD273 It's not a bug, it's a feature!
Hmm, that's my problem. I keep trying to sequentially read my random access memories.
Something good has happened to me, therefore, I must have made a mistake
19:02
@James I would be very interested... in four years when I'm out of university and have actual money.
19:33
@Gryphon Ah, Ramen and Pop-tarts.
@James I mean, I'm not even in uni yet, I just have no money because I'm saving it all for when I get there.
@Gryphon You're going to need a good notebook for college. Might as well buy a really nice one, instead of those overpriced cheap ones from the uni store.
@AndyD273 Does a free digital notebook count?
I used OneNote.
I have my notes to this day, zipped up and stored on the cloud somewhere.
Along with all my papers and stuff.
@AndyD273 Yeah, I've gotta agree with Hosch. My plan is to get a nice tablet/laptop combo of some kind in the near future, and just write/type my notes on that. Maybe after my first co-op term, I'll have a bit of money.
I like HPs.
Look at the Envy/Omen line.
19:42
One note is "fine", so long as the power holds out. But try leaving notes asking for help on your blood covered computer after the power goes out and the university descends into cannibalistic madness, then you'll wish you had a nice paper notebook.
@Hosch250 Oh god, it is an omen!
And be sure and get the student discount.
At least it's not a harbinger.
I made an answer for my question

A: Could a living creature produce graphene?

Mephistophelesit's future Mephisto here. You could try to create an "organic reaction chamber" that can produce the required conditions. Think of osteoderms, you could create a sphere of deposited minerals on the inside, with lots of air pockets in them (better insulation) and heavy vascularization on the out...

@AndyD273 To burn to keep you warm?
19:48
@AndyD273 Oh, you drew my true form, how cUtE
Without a good notebook, you have to resort to drawing on the walls with (other peoples) bodily fluids
2
And that stuff is hard to clean off
@AndyD273 "our precious bodily fluids"
20:39
What did I walk into here?
@NexTerren Normal worldbuilding stuff.
@Gryphon ...I can't argue with this
@NexTerren an ambush
@Mephistopheles I'm not trapped in here with you...
So, what do you think about my answer?

@Mephistopheles I think it's fine, but future me thinks it needs some improvement
22:37
hey there @Mithrandir24601
@Shalvenay Rytsas! Today I did some spinning on ice and discovered how ridiculously fun it is :D
@Mithrandir24601 heheh. doing alright here
