@Secespitus nice story that other people here might want to read too. :-)
03:29
If anyone's interested, I came across a semi-relevant New York Times article on orbits and habitability: nytimes.com/2019/01/02/science/….
(No, we're not mentioned in this article. :-( )
@MonicaCellio Ooooh, nice!
@Secespitus I like the use of the present tense in Heaven's Fall. It adds to the action.

Q: Should we have science fiction?

Tim BI just noticed the science-fiction tag. https://worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/science-fiction This tag feels meaningless to me, it should possibly be a synonym to science-based but even that feels week. Should we delete it? Synonym it? Have I missed something that means it i...

14:28
@Green Congrats! Where are you teaching?
15:25
Happy Thursday, people!
16:24
Happy Thursday to you, HDE!

@AndyD273 @Green Wait...he's going to be a teacher? Gods help us all.
@HDE226868 So I understood all the words in that article you shared on twitter re: dark matter, but my voluminous vocabulary aside I have no idea what it means.
17:59
@James I think the quote was "glorified computer teacher", but that might not mean an actual teacher. Kinda like describing a boot camp sergeant as a glorified babysitter. A boot camp sergeant would probably do great as a babysitter, so long as you could teach the kids what words not to say in polite company later...
@James Let me maybe phrase it differently - and please interrupt me if I'm being unclear on anything.
So, dark matter interacts with regular matter only through gravity, right?
18:29
@James tremble!
@AndyD273 the title is Cloud Governance Architect. But, since I'm just helping other people do their implementations, not doing it for them... My position is that of teacher where I help them learn as quickly as possible how to use my company's product.
@AndyD273 corporate offices all over the US.
18:42
@Green Ah, so you'll still be US work based, and just travel down from Canada to do the training?
19:15
@HDE226868 If you say so.
holla
Can I briefly hijack for a word/phrasing question?
Sure, dot.
Can I use the phrase: "Industriousness lies in the air" ?
or is that truly an only German thing?
It makes sense in english
Even if it is a little strange in it's phrasing
It does make sense, but it sounds a little awkward to me.
19:19
the awkwardness is what has me coming here
Maybe "The air hummed with the sound of industry"?
hmm
maybe the adjective doesn't work as intended :/ > business, people scurrying around, preparing, being about <
for "lies" in german, is that similar to sound, or is it more anticipation?
...thrummed in the air?
If that make sense :)
"the air was full of the sound of work"
19:22
@AndyD273 the latter. E.g. Love lies in the air (to germanize)
so more of a feeling
yeah, though hearing is a feeling as well in some definitions ;)
YOu could say "A feeling of anticipation filled the air", so you could almost use "a feeling of industry filled the air", but industry is a weird word to use... production might be better...
"Love lies in the air" works in english too
Perhaps "A feeling of busyness lies in the air"?
fills the air <- THAT'S IT
@AndyD273 but it more usually is "Love is in the air", not?
19:28
Yeah, that too
Fills is a better word than lies. Except when talking about love... /feigned bitterness
sorry, dumb joke
I laughed, so it wasn't a bad joke.
I wonder if I should have used cake instead of love...
The one you went with was darker, but that's not necessarily a problem.
I guess it could have been worse. Could have gone really dark and used "potato" instead of "love'...
...I don't get it.
19:33
@AndyD273 don't go there
@Gryphon few years ago there was a Latvian joke phase that went through, of very dark humor, often dealing with potatoes, or the lack there of
Please excuse my ignorance of Lativan humor trends.
Two Latvian Look at Clouds
One see potato.
Other see impossible dream.
Is same cloud.
That's... depressing.
Latvian Girl Say, “I Want Go America One Day.”
Father say, “I send you America.”
Daughter is thank father. Make tears of happy. Father use to salt potato.
Father think moment, say, “Daughter, I no send you America.”
Potato needed more salt.

I think it's commonly referred to as black humor. One of the chief exports of soviet countries. They were too poor to export anything else.

Slow clap in appreciation of the dark humour in that explanation of dark humour
hehe
oh boy these are great
These are quite amusing, yes.
@AndyD273 Affirmative
20:14
GUYS
My literal shared-a-wall-with-him next door neighbor was picked up by the DOJ for attempting to take over $1,400,000,000 worth of data back to China. A data thief living next door to a cybersecurity guy.
That number has a lot of zeroes.
1.4 - 1.7 billion is the charge.
Do you know where the data was from?
The Phillips 66 research center here in Bartlesville, OK. Petroleum engineering.
20:32
@NexTerren Man, just think what that would have been like if you had been the one to catch him...
@AndyD273 Haha, they're the other big company in town, so I had no insight into their affairs. But yes! That would have been a feather in my cap!
@NexTerren This is why you need to hack all your neighbors. For <strike>science!</strike> security!
I think the DOJ would have picked up two guys if that had been the case.
probably. Unless they are leaving the one that didn't have access to the data in the wind so they can track him back to his handlers, and blow the whole ring open
Just hack the DOJ and erase your name from the list. Problem solved.
20:37
"Guys! I just heard I'm getting free new housing! It's bay-area! I think the men with guns mentioned something about guacamole? Guacamole Bay or something like that...?"
Congratulations, Nex!
I hope your new home is comfortable!
Yeah! They have awesome activities like waterboarding! Which I hear is something like surfing!
I love Cuban food!
Hopefully you get a nice roommate. Offer him your bacon as a show friendship
20:54
@NexTerren Jeez you need to improve your situational awareness. Didn't you cydie-sense tingle?!?
@James His mother cooked me food. My defenses were down. :(
@NexTerren It's always the nice ones...
